Did our video help you? If so, consider buying us a beer: bit.ly/3feE6tJ
In this video, we show you how to install a full set of RCI skid plates onto a 4th Gen Toyota 4runner.
**RCI makes every skid plate imaginable for the 4th Gen 4runner -
*Engine Skid
*Transmission Skid
*Transfer Case Skid
*Fuel Tank Skid
*Rear Differential Skid
*Front Lower Control Arm (A-Arm) Skids
*Rear Lower Control Arm Skids
*AC Condenser and Radiator Skid (RCI calls it their "Bumper Filler Plate")
RCI offers these skids in Aluminum or Steel. Aluminum is MUCH lighter than steel but it's not as durable. If you're looking to save weight and are ok with the lower durability of aluminum, it would be the way to go for you. Steel is stronger and more durable, but you'll be adding a significant amount of weight to your vehicle.
In this video, we installed mostly aluminum skid plates for Nate. Because they were Aluminum and very light, they were very easy to install. With Steel skid plates, you'll have to use a jack to assist you getting them in place and bolted up. We recommend a transmission jack because of the much wider and stable base it offers, but a traditional jack will work as well. With the traditional jack, you'll just have more work getting the skid plates properly balanced onto the jack plate.

Getting ready to install a coastal offroad drivetrain and gas tank skidplate set on my 3rd gen 4r. Also have a budbuilt rear diff skid plate, which i hope is compatible with them. Took note of any hangups that might apply to them. Thanks timmy and sean.

Hey Timmy! Thanks for making the video 👍 I just leased a 2024 4Runner TRD Off Road and bought RCI Rock sliders, Bumper filler plate, Engine skid, Transmission skid, Catalytic guard, Transfer case skid, Fuel tank skid, Rear differential skid, A-arm skid, Rear shock mount, and Lower link skid plates. I have almost no “handyman experience” and no tools at home, but I want to learn these life skills and install the parts myself. Who knows maybe it’s something I can teach my kids one day? Haha! Can you take a look at the RCI install guides and let me know whether it’s doable? And if it is doable, can you let me know what tools to buy? I would really appreciate it and I would happily send you a tip for your time/troubles. Thanks!

Knowing how RCI makes their skid plates, it's going to be doable with basic tools. Whatever tools you need, buy them. Tools are an investment that continues to save you money. Having mechanical skills will be valuable. Knowing how to fix your own things and troubleshoot problems are huge if you want to be self-sufficient and save tons of money. There's tons of information on the internet to fix almost everything. Good luck!

I noticed when tightening the rear lower control arm skids they just didn’t seem to ever hit torque. The fit isn’t the best and it seems the RCI skid bracket is bending to conform more to the oe bracket. So I just did it pretty snug. I didn’t want the part of the RCI skid that was tight against whatever part of the oe bracket it was hitting to start bending the oe bracket inward. Overall the fit of the rear lca skids is not great imo. To be fair frame has a weld down the middle and maybe some fit Better than others around the lca bracket itself.
@TimmyTheToolman

For a mass-produced item like this, a manufacturer like RCI will have a jig that the metal is put into when they weld, so there's little chance for variation. Sometimes something happens with their jig and the setting accidentally gets shifted a bit and they don't notice it. I think you should bring it to their attention. Maybe they'll send you out another set.

Damnit Tim stay out of my brain! Just looking at these for mine last night. How do go about selecting which thickness to use? That's where I'm at, which ones don't NEED to be steel.
@davidrucci
@davidrucci 2 года назад
So aluminum you’d want to go pretty thick which I believe they only offer a 1/4” option for. Aluminum WILL get hung up on rocks. If you do light off-roading and more touring, aluminum is a great option obviously because it’s so light. Anything you plan on bashing on rocks frequently I’d go steel 100%. I believe RCI makes a 3/16” and a 1/4” option so 1/4” is for the much more hardcore wheeler who plans on heavy rock crawling. Obviously much heavier though and will slow you and your mpg’s down. Something to consider. Smiles per miles though! Right? 😀🤦‍♂️
@PhildoBaggins
@PhildoBaggins 2 года назад
@@davidrucci more touring, more incidental rock strikes on wheeler trails than anything. Certainly not a dedicated rock bouncer. I know the gas tank and the rear lower links on the GX470 are really low so was going to go steel there and the diffs but wasn't sure if some of the other plates were less critical and could be aluminimum for weight. Started out closer to 20mpg but every purchase leads me closer to 10
@davidrucci
@davidrucci 2 года назад
@@PhildoBaggins yeah I hear ya, same on my 4th Gen. I’m going 3/16th’s throughout on mine but I’m possibly set up to wheel a bit harder and I’m regeared. I feel like Aluminum would do just fine if you’re not purposely crawling up and down rocks or doing hardcore trails. Otherwise steel is the way to go.
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 2 года назад
I'd give my two cents but since David did such a good job, I really have nothing to add other than I prefer steel over aluminum. I'll take the extra weight penalty for stronger and more durable skids.

all your videos are very helpful and done great! I would sur like to see a video on the 93 model pickup speed odometer system. Mine seams to work after truck gets warmed up part of the time ,sometimes I have see the trip odometer run backwards, I replaced the sensor on the tranny with one from toyots for 300$ but still does the same thing. Are their any options for aftermarket speed odometers? Any info at all on trouble shooting that thing would be very helpful
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman Год назад
Great to hear you like our videos. We unfortunately don't have much experience with speedometer systems. If you can get your hands on a factory service manual for your truck, that might help with troubleshooting the issue you're having.

@@omegaman7241 I don't even know if he wants to sell them let alone ship them all the way to Canada. The shipping would be very expensive. It might not be worth it. I would imagine if he was going to sell them, he'd sell them to a local buyer.
