The engine failed to start and i suspected an issue with the ignition points. The ignition system wont function well if the points gap is not set right. Time to clean the points and set the gap right!
I feel this is the most useful video on rd350 available on youtube. All other videos of your channel too has great quality and understandability. Great work mate!
Beautiful bike, highly desireable...Your doing a great job...recommend you get some hi-temp grease for the felt on the points lobe..It only takes a tiny bit.You gonna go for another set of oversized piston/rings or are you riding it in the meantime..?...Before you go for a bore I`d check the piston rings, they maybe stuck in the lands......well done..a piece of history. From the USA.!
It’s better to use a dial gauge fitted to the spark plug hole and set timing (2mm before TDC) that way. I was just eyeballing to see if the timing was close to TDC, so I removed the head and made it easy for myself. I am rebuilding my engine now and will be using a dial gauge to set timing.
You’ll find it much easier if you only slacken the screw a small amount then use a flat blade screw driver between the pegs and teeth on the points to gradually adjust the gap in the right direction.
Hey, love the bike and the videos! it probably doesn't matter for setting the gap, but when it comes time for setting when the points open rotate the engine the way it normally runs I'm pretty sure you were going backwards here. Consider checking the ignition timing after because changing the gap changes the timing. Also you set the gap at the spot where the points normally open the widest, then use dial gauge to find when they should open.
@@seventiesmetal8673 there should be a tab on the bottom of your flywheel with a vertical line and Philips head screw on it, move it to the exact point visually to the fixed timing mark on the flywheel and in the future for quick adjustments or a checkup you may not need to use the dial gauge again until next rebuild.
Don’t remember the song name unfortunately. I have mentioned the artist at the end of the video though. Please use some app like Shazaam music discovery to recognize the song!
Hi, may name is Vladimir and i live in Brasil. I have an RD 350 1974. I'm having trouble adjusting the ignition timing. When i adjust the point gap, they no longer close. What could be happenig? Thanks.
Hi! There is a spring that makes the contacts close. Check that the spring is ok, if not I would change the contacts. yambits.co.uk/rd350-ignition-points-p-4570.html?osCsid=sq0h0v73rb853h9uamhi7qjdb0
You are right! This video was only about the gap setting .. waiting for the dial gauge tool as you suggested .. will make a video about TDC timing when I have it!
