MY RD400 ALWAYS LIKED IRIDIUM PLUGS SO AFTER 8000 MILES I PUT IN A BRAND NEW SET AND SHARED OTHER INFO THAT MAY BE IF INTEREST THEN WENT FOR A BEAUTIFUL RIDE THAT REMINDED ME WHY I LOVE THIS BIKE.
Hi, gorgeous bike! I just want to share my experience with two aftermarket ignitions. HPI and most recently, the VAPE. When I had the hpi I noticed a real improvement in midrange power... it was wonderful how much more it pulled without having to rev the hell out of the bike. My 76 RD400 is completely stock as well.. no aftermarket intake or exhausts. The HPI has an ECU in it and there is a ignition curve in it so this is responsible for the extra power. There's two things I didnt care for and caused me to take it off... the flywheel is SUPER small diameter and very light. Due to this I had to set the idle higher than I liked to prevent it from stalling. There wasnt enough inertia to keep it ticking over where I had it set when I had the points ign on the bike. Also, I had to swap all lights to LED's because the HPI doesnt make a whole lot of wattage. Not a big deal, i like the bright headlight now but just putting it out there. I recently installed a VAPE ignition and it has a proper flywheel on it like an RZ350.. they look identical to me. So I could get it to idle at 1200rpm no issues. Also... the VAPE produces 150 watts which I will need as I am planning to use a Microsquirt to EFI the bike this winter. It will be done in such a way that in 20 minutes I can yank to throttle bodies off and put the stock carbs on if I so desire. The VAPE is more money tho, it aint cheap... and the base unit does not have an ECU that provides an ignition curve so its a flat line right across the rev range. However... there is a programmer and ecu you can purchase that will allow you to program in your own curve. Since I will have the Microsquirt I can use it to control the ignition as well and I will add in my own curve to get that extra power. If you have the extra coin and want the bike to behave as stock as possible I would defo get the VAPE and down the road, if you feel compelled, get the controller unit and add a curve to get that mid range and a little more top end that the HPI produced.
Vape CDI ignition kit sold from HVCC cycle. Just bought one with the machined keyway on the stator cover from them for my 400. They are the only ones who machine in the keyway cutaway that allows the use of the original crank keyway.
Thanks Windy, there`s nothing like a two stroke. Some days they like to run perfect, other days not. It´s always about testing and trying often analysis leads to the wrong way. I´m trying to improve my RD 250
Hey Windy, do you use resistor plug caps with those Iridium plugs? Just ordered a set to replace my B8ES's an noticed the iridiums have a resistor in the plug too.
I got my vape ignition arriving today the one with the ecu and ignition curve. What's your f.b account i will keep you updated. Nice nice i like your videos.
