I think it depends upon whether we are talking nation or bending. I think Fire is the weakest bending, but they just got mad numbers. If you look at the interactions they have won, they have always had either a once in a century accelerant and/or overwhelming numbers. If we are talking Nations I think it is water. Water had to wait on Katara to embarrass their master to get away from their sexist traditions. If they allow every bender to learn both crucial parts of bending, they could’ve been so much more powerful but they were too happily stuck in their ways

That’s why we saw the tournaments from LoK. Showcasing that there’s levels to bending. That’s why if you wanna go off the Nation, the most peaceful people will always be perceived as the quote “weakest”

The water nation has the strongest villains we've seen. Yakone, Amon, Tarlok, Unalaq, Ming-hua. Plus they have the most environmental buffs like rain and a full moon. Also feels like the most versatile element when you change forms to water, ice, or snow.

water nation may be the weakest but purely bending wise, I gotta say fire bending is objectively the worst bending style. It has the weakest irl versatilely and usage Edit: I didn't say fire bending has zero versatility in real life, just the least of the four. Sure, you can sear wounds, but most people would literally never have to do that in their lives, nor do most people know how to do so properly. Flight is possible, but an incredibly hard thing to do. Your average firebender won't be able to fly. Korra was able to do it in the Avatar State, Azula was a prodigy, and everyone else like Jong Jong flew during Sozin's comet iirc. You'd be able to boil water or create light sources, but not much else besides that. There are just way more perks with the other bending styles.

In regards to the "Anbu" you only see them in the craziest of situations so even the weakest is probably Hella strong if just doing tegular missions

I think geographically, water nation may be the most vulnerable. When your two mainland are placed at both ends of the world, communication and cooperation is practically lost. In ATLA, southern water tribe doesn't even feel like a nation and they were constantly being attacked by the fire nation and the northern water tribe did not or was not able to provide help to their sister tribe. Maybe you can argue that maybe the air nation too has a similar vulnerable state plus they do not have a formal military, but at least they may still have a chance for coordination since they are relatively not that distant to each other.

for me Strongest would be: 1. Fire Nation = they militarized their bending so they got the most manpower with destructive bendings. 2. Earth Nation = prioritized fortifications on their settlements. 3. Air Nation = although they built most of their settlements on mountaintops they're mostly pacifist. 4. Water Nation = most of their water benders are already imprisoned and in the northern water tribe they have a sexist views on who should be "warriors" only allowing men to be soldiers cutting their already dwindling manpower in half.

I think yall underestimating a earth bender in all actuality water may be everywhere and so is air but it takes their top benders (master) to bend at a high scale. A regular earth bender can give pretty much anybody a run for their money to a degree except probably the air nomads due to agile dodging ability (the way Aang did Toph). A decent earth bender can hold their own pretty good,a master like Bumi or Toph speaks for itself lets not forget Kyoshi crazy ass if we referencing and Avatar

Air nation could make tornadoes if provoked, water benders could flood the earth, earth benders could cause earthquakes and we already saw fire benders scorch the earth😂

fun fact : every member of the air nomads is a bender due to spiritual purity so if you 100 one hundred members from each nation ONLY they would have 100 benders

If the question is exclusively about which nation is the weakest, one would assume that a nation would be judged on how strong/weak they are militarily, and what is the average strength and skill set of said military. both air and water are weak in manpower, they (air nation) are more battle ready due to the monk's constant training. I think in all the other nations, they seemed to have a higher percentage of benders in their population that would also be at a capable level than the water tribe.

If we’re talking everybody is at their peak so: earthbending at their peak has lava, mud, metal and sand bending. This arguably could be the most unstoppable category. Defensewise it tops the list. If we’re being technical Metal bending is a great counter to lightning which they can redirect if they are around it. The iq of earth benders are also at the top of the list. Mud bending can be used if they are in a rainstorm and not enough solid earth is around them. Air bending seems to be the simplest of the bunch but also very slept on. Air benders can fly and are the most agile and fast of the benders. They are also very calm and relaxed ppl even in combat due to their monk lifestyle. They trained every single day at laser focus more than any other nation. They can also take the breath out of anyone’s lungs which almost cannot be prevented unless you are able to one shot them or take control of them aka with blood bending. If we’re also being technical here too they can change air currents (granted they’re strong enough) and change the weather which could greatly affect water and fire benders by either creating storms by changing fronts and making it hard for fire benders OR making it extremely hot and harder for water benders. Water bending is a slept on group as well. Water benders at full peak potential can take water from anything that holds moisture whether it be the dew on grass, water in plants, sweat, rain, etc. not only this but they can create ice with this water in an instant. Water benders are also great healers as well. Now water benders having blood bending is probably the most op ability next to pulling air from someone’s lungs but the difference is though someone may lose their breath due to the loss of air they could still get off moves before they finally collapse depending on the situation, blood bending is completely immobilizing preventing any control of one’s body unless they go into an avatar state which only avatars can do. They would be able to stop any and everybody at will with this. The also can seemingly drown most opponents as well. Fire benders are probably the most ferocious of the 4. Based on pure power they probably have the best offense. Their lightning bending is powerful and extremely fast probably the fastest ability in the show and extremely hard to counter. Though in terms of defense fire benders are either second to worst or the worst of the 4. Fire benders can also learn the combustion technique which would be able to dismantle pretty much all other bending techniques with the sonic explosion. Firebenders biggest weakness is water. Overall it’s extremely close and super balanced, but fire is probably the weakest of the 4 but not by much at all just barely. I consider earth and water the strongest due to the amount of hax they have at full peak form. Air doesn’t match up too well with earth and earth is just overall better rounded so I can’t put air above earth. Bloodbending being the most broken ability puts water at the top. Fire bending nation often overpowered the others bc of 1 sozans comet, 2 they had far better numbers, and 3 the other nations had some mental block (water preventing women from truly being skillful in water bending dwindling their numbers, air them being monks and avoiding combat, and earth being the second strongest nation and most targeted due to the air nation being eliminated and water benders being too stingy to send help due to their numbers being low). Does it mean they’re weak? Hell no but they just don’t have the hax or enough counters for each other nation.

Honestly it’s gotta be fire. Utility wise, bending wise it’s just fire and lightning. You can kinda fly with it like a jetpack but ehh. All the other moves can stop your flow or control your limbs. You can legit make metal walls and expand them out so no fire or lightning or air or water ever hits you. You lava bend, you can control their body to shut down their bending as well. We’re made of minerals so you can technically mineral bend a human and even control their limbs with the metal braces. Imagine taking all the iron & minerals out of a human body! Talk about iron deficiency. Immune system would shut down. You can build the tightest walls and most compact objects so the density alone is insane. A somewhat strong earth bending is neutering a somewhat strong water and fire bender. The ability to make mistakes against earth is nonexistent. You can’t get hit. They have the best defense. Don’t forget they can reinforce themselves with the aang earth armor around him. Earth doesn’t mean rock. It means soil, grass etcc. So you’d be good at neutralizing fires. And in mud you can still move the earth so you can psuedo water bending with that or lava. Water you have blood bending ice, and water the strongest force in this earth. Water at a concentrated PSI can literally cut through everything on this earth. The whole black community saved. You never gonna drown you can freeze for stronger blocking. You can even pull water out of the air, not just flowers or trees. Water can heal people too Air accessibility it’s never weak. You can fly, you’re the most mobile. You can take the air out of any benders lungs. Tornadoes. You can legit repel anything that’s thrown at you like a forcefield with enough wind pressure. Air definitely not the weakest. Your attack counters pretty much every other bending in the series.

Firebenders needed the comet to run the fades with the Air Nomads, and the Nomads still caught hella bodies. Imagine how the invasion would've gone if Sozin's Comet wasn't a factor.

Azula was built differently!! Zuko, in fact, knew she was off. Plus, he technically had Katara as support. She had the highest firepower, and she could bend lightning just like Ozai. Zuko just knew how to redirect it.

The argument was never about bending. In terms of bending air bending for combat is top 2. A nation is more than its benders, other nations have militaries that include non benders as well. You can’t take the feats of one bender and apply that to all benders of the same element, that’s like looking at Toph or Ozai and saying all benders are on that level. Bending is martial arts. Monk gyatso was considered the greatest airbender at the time as stated by aang. Dude was best friends with avatar Roku. He is the exception not the rule. When you look bending specifically air is not the weakest but as a nation they definitely are. They aren’t called the “air nation” they are air nomads.

Ya'll underestimating Earth. Remember that with earthbending you can read minds, sense vibrations, metal can conduct heat and electricity. The fact there is really no clear cut answer on who the weakest nation is just shows how great the authors were able to depict balance. But if I had to choose the weakest, its between water and fire only because they are the 2 elements of the 4 that are affected by celestial bodies (aka the Sun/Comet or the Moon/Eclipse) good or bad where as Earth and Air remains neutral despite them. I hate to say this but I might go water and I know bloodbending is an OP ability but I also remembered in Book One that Zhao literally killed the moon spirit and the water benders lost their bending (and Yue had to sacrifice to bring it back). If 2 Koi Fish spirits and the Moon are the source of their power versus a Comet and the Sun then I might give fire the edge. But again there is no clear cut answer for ANY nation and that's great writing for this show!

I’ve come to agree with it… it depends on the setting of the fight. You can argue night and day what nation is capable of what but as far as we seen in both shows, your power depends on the setting the bender is in it. Benefits: Water Tribe… Full Moon, Night Time, Body of water Fire Nation… Comet, Day Time, Warmer Climate (weird but Zuko does mention this) Earth Kingdom… Plain Land Scape, Metal surroundings, the ground itself (assuming they know seismic sense like Toph) Air Nomads… Spiritual connection (takes hard focus as Janora puts it), and just about anywhere with anything their imagination allows

if we keeping it a buck water, benders always need circumstance to be powerful ei being in rain or next to a somewhat large body of water And blood bending is really only strong again weaker opponents, example Amon and Tarlok, Tarlok could blood bend but since Amon as a stronger water bender than him he was able to break free

1-Earth 2-Fire 3-Air 4-Water Earth is ridiculous, you have your resource literally everywhere, and lava and steel bending are scary. Ba sing se is also ridiculous, and earth kingdom cities defy physics due to their bending. Fire is extremely technologically advanced compared to the other tribes. Didn’t win the war because they were fighting in multiple fronts. Can create fire from nowhere, and that’s OP. Air nomads were not warlike and peaceful, and as a nation pretty weak as they had 4 small settlements. Only above water because air bending is OP, and the strongest bending. Water nation wasn’t even trying, people living in huts, hunting for a living, super underdeveloped. Northern water tribe is a bit better, but still. Fire nation was pulling up with war-ships and they were using spears 💀

It really depends on what era we talking. If it's korra's era, Ima say fire. Nevermind combustion bending, but lightening was so common dudes had part time jobs fueling generators with their lightening. If we're talking aangs era, I'm going with Air. Of course if we're giving all benders access to all the abilities we've seen in the avatarverse, I'm giving it to air, of course Earthbenders I think come close.

We didn’t really see what an aggressive air bender could do until Zaheer. Everybody doesn’t need to know blood ending.. in LOK ol’boy took out a ROOM full of people… including the avatar using blood bending.

even tho the air nation didn't have time for fighting really , when the fire nation pulled up they were ready to go instantly . Gotta also look at who's inside the air temples, most of the people inside the air temples are children, there are only about 10 masters in each air temple, so it was the fire nation vs 10 at every temple, and they were still put belt to ass on every regular fire bender that pulled up with the comet. Ozai and Airo where the only real threats among them.

My thing about the water nation is they lost against the fire nation on their home turf surrounded by water with the fire nation at a disadvantage. Cause it's not like they all went on airships. Some of them have to be on boats. I mean, that's how zuko arrived on a boat with his uncle.

It's tough because each bending style has extra different additions. Water Bending has healing, and bloodbending, Earth has Metal and Lava bending, Fire Bending has Lighting and then Air bending has the ability to fly. You also could bring the factor to which is more practical. You could bend air and fire out of no where at any time. Earth Bending has to be near earth or metal and Water bending has to be near water. If I had to pick the strongest it'd be Fire Nation for sure but the weakest by default has to be air. They only fight in defense and lack killer instinct.
