All I have to say about this new project is AMBITIOUS!!! 😮 I have no doubt that you'll pull it off, and I cannot wait to see the finished product! Good luck, Tony
Thanks mate definitely is ambitious - you should see the sketchup - the masking works, of that Im very confident, but the actual putting it all together in a seamless way is going to be the challenge :D
Absolutely amazing work. Very excited to see the result. Transformers 5 is going to give your masking an incredible workout. I saw that at the cinema and the variable aspect ratio was mind numbing. Will the Trinnov Waveform give you 9 hz depth through out? I wish I could visit 😅. Enjoy.
Thanks! Yes, I will have to do a lot of testing of my code when I get everything in place but I am looking forward to seeing how it goes in a live situation. I won't get 9hz with these subwoofers, they have a tonne of output but my Volcanix Slims go down to around 15hz - and Im honestly not that interested in infrasonic bass - Ive experienced it and it's a bit meh to me... I like deep and impactful bass which is usually around 50-70hz anyway. I can't fit bigger subs in my room anyway as it's too small :)
Hi Tony, Selva from India and love your channel. Just curious about the MADVR HTPC, can you let me know how we can build our own MADVR HTPC as I do have a Ryzen powered HTPC but only need the graphics card, would be great if I can have HDR tone mapping processed by it. looking forward to hearing from you. good luck with your home theater upgrade
Hi, Iam going to just say it, How of the best channels out there ( thank you for doing videos the way you do, please don't change ) and 2nd, I love this project, let me know how it turns out and if you are willing to sell It :) Or build two ( minus the wood I could build it here ) Let me know :D Regards
Doing an HDR to SDR conversion is the way to go! Relying only on the tonemapping is the place I want to be with the MadVR - not interested in any of the other stuff.
Masking is so worth the trouble and I can’t wait to see how your system turns out! I built one with a roller shade motor that works great. I only have 16x9 and CinemaScope programmed but I can adjust it on the fly for 2:1 Netflix shows. Automatic aspect ratio detection is way above my pay grade though!
That sounds great! I assume you have one way masking coming down from the top? And yes it does require a LOT of coding and logic plus control of the motors, so lots of dependancies, but I will get it into a place that hopefully can be replicated! Thanks for watching.
@@BuildMontage The top mask is lowered by the roller shade and the bottom mask is raised at the same time. I have two chords looped behind the roller shade tube and connected to the bottom mask bar. As the roller tube turns forward into CinemaScope ratio it pulls up the bottom shade bar. As the roller tube turns backward into 16x9 mode it lowers the bottom shade bar. I made a video of it in action and posted to my “channel” (it’s the only video I have posted) if you want to see it in action. It’s simple, quick and cheap but effective.
Great project Tony and enjoy watching the evolution of your room. I recently setup a 158" 2.35 Elite AT screen and love it. Thinking I'd go horizontal blind to mask it down to 16:9 at some point. And just action it with google assistant and do Epson auto lens shift at same time. But kudos for going all out with automation. Can you please share Madvr software walkthrough in a video perhaps 🙏 As I'll need to shrink 16.9 to scope for variable imax or forget its there 😆
Really looking forward to how you go building and configuring the HTPC madvr. I’m about to start a similar build myself soon to handle the tone mapping and aspect ratio switching. Is there a channel on the discord server about this? Keep up the good work Tony!
Great upgrade and a great project. My personal preference would be constant height masking, so that CinemaScope would be the largest presentation and the less wide formats would require the masking from the sides, but I suppose that would be prohibitive in an average sized room. I just prefer that scope and 70mm formats display the largest picture like in the classic days of widescreen cinemas. With constant shifting IMAX formats, I guess top and bottom masking could be considered a better option for many.
Constant image heigh doesn't work too well for me as I have a narrow room. Wider rooms and big screens it definitely would work - its not a hard and fast rule, but more to do with the room itself.
Hey Tony - Great to see more happening with the theatre! I'm keen for some more info on the MadVR HTPC - How exactly is this going to work in your setup? I'm not familiar with a MADVR HTPC and I've been googling but I can't find anything that makes sense for your use case. I'd be super keen on a video specifically on this, if it's not already something planned. Keep up the great work mate!
Hey Tony! Absolutely love this idea! I think its every home theatre enthusiasts dream to have a masking system. Ive been trying to find a motorised AT screen like the one your getting but probably between 150"-140" I know Elite screens are reasonably priced but I'm not having much luck naviagting their website. You couldn't send me a link could you please, that will atleast point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance.
@@BuildMontageThanks Tony! I went back to their website (Europe) last night and it looks like they've updated it, it's a lot more easier to navigate now... I don't know what they were thinking 😂 I've found the one I want - (UK pounds) £1,950... I better get saving 😂 Thanks again!
Im sorry, but your screen black bars are going to move while the movie is playing and switch multiple times throughout the film? thats not a good idea for a few reason's. Why don't you just bite the bullet and purchase the 115" TCL or the Samsung WALL? Having your screen panels move while the movie is playing sounds incredibly distracting. This is why Commercial theaters don't do that. Plus moving parts will eventually break, and thats another issue you will have to deal with down he road.
Well this is the main reason I'm doing the project, and as the actuators are really fast, it should work well. The main thing to note is that it has a slow/auto mode which will just set to one aspect ratio for the whole movie, and when you exit to the menu, it will go to full widescreen. Not many movies shift aspect ratios. The other thing is I cant put a TV there - how will the audio pass through the solid object? Also these actuators will not break - they are designed to run forever and also lift 1000lb each :D I'm forging ahead regardless - hope you stick around to see the result :)
