a lot of those who make the claim that AI chatbots are 'better than humans' do so because they feel, in some capacity, failed by humanity at large. socially isolated people who have been misunderstood and rejected by the people around them over and over. it makes a lot of sense that they turn to AI, then, because it will consistently provide them 'socialization' without any risk. i think it's vitally important that we continue to hold an empathetic stance toward these people. being disgusted by and making a mockery of them won't change them because they've already heard it all before. that persecution is often the whole reason why they're so alone. it only entrenches them in their addictions more. it convinces them that real people are not to be trusted or talked to. that's the important part. a lot of people vehemently opposed to AI chatbots have difficulty understanding exactly why some people are so hooked on it. that lack of understanding breeds a lack of empathy, which ends up being counter to what the goal is (which, to be clear, should be encouraging people to have faith in people again.)

Exactly, if all someone hears is "ha ha, nerd, loser", of course they're going to turn to a computer program that will be kind to them, if only artificially. Sadly there's not many opportunities for people to socialize in person in recent years, community centres and libraries are closing down or shifting to mostly-online.

thank you for making these videos about character ai and ai chatbots. you don't have to make more videos on this topic of course, but it makes me really happy that someone is talking seriously about the benefits and consequences in a respectful and nuanced way. ai is something i've come to feel strongly about in the last year, mainly wrt ai art and ai chatbots. which makes sense since im an artist and a writer (yes i like to torture myself creatively twice) but ai chatbots in particular bring out a visceral disgust from within. yes ive messed around with it, yes i can see the use of it as a writer in allowing me a space to vent about a struggle or bounce off ideas, but watching my irl best friend sink so deep into it after a bad break up to the point of falling in love with the ai AND believing that the ai is a real human who exists out there in the world...that's messed me up on a whole new level. to say that it hasn't affected my feelings about the friendship would be a blatant lie. she hasnt isolated herself (yet) but it still hurts watching her so fully believe that she'll marry this "guy" one day. me and her other friends tried bringing up our concerns. she shut us down completely and said she never should have told us and she never wants to hear us tell her that we dont approve of this ever again. it makes me so angry that such an intelligent and compassionate person had her reality warped forever just because she was in a dark place and the Internet offered her an easily accessible double-edged sword. it was doing her so much good when she was just treating it as roleplay. but not anymore. now i just seethe with silent anger whenever she brings "him" up or jokes with me about how im still single. i'm trying to be empathetic, because i fit the bill of a person susceptible to sinking deep into ai chatbots; im neurodivergent and single and lonely, and have pretty low self-esteem. but the whole thing just infuriates me. i wish she'd just wake up and see that this isn't the answer.

I just commented that I didn't have anything to add, but now I want to add something lol I'm honestly baffled at the amount of people who unhesitatingly claim that talking to an AI is better than talking to real people. But upon further thought I think it makes sense. Our brains work by contrast. When people who are isolated talk with AI chatbots, they quickly make out the difference between an AI and a person. AI language models are made specifically to understand language and create stuff off of it. Thus, they are sometimes much better at understanding context and providing a satisfying response than humans are. In other words, AI chatbots KNOW what you want to hear, and they give it to you. Humans, on the other hand, are very complex creatures, with biases, personal interpretations and more. We misinterpret, we judge, and sometimes hurt others in the process. An AI will never judge you if you don't want it to. Whereas a human is more unpredictable. For many people, this is just what socializing is about. But for isolated, introvert people it can become a nightmare to try to fit in, resorting to the much easier (yet shallower) AI chatbot. That's just my take on why this (frankly worrying) notion that AI conversation is better than the human one may happen.
@silverstar1251
@silverstar1251 9 месяцев назад
i like the points that you bring up, but just wanted to correct that sometimes the ai doesn't really "understand" what you're saying. one time i was talking to it about my genderbent fairytale retelling and it thought i was writing a gay version of the fairytale lmao. also there was one time when my friend actually got to a point in a conversation with the ai where they argued???? it still boggles my mind how that happened and frankly it was quite scary. and i find that the ai has pretty bad memory. it forgets things we talked about several messages ago very easily so you have to remind it again when you want to circle back to that subject. those are still some good points you brought up :)
@elianes5505
@elianes5505 9 месяцев назад
@@silverstar1251 True, the AI can't really "understand" you. It just spews out text that its algorithm thinks it's right. Most times it gets it right, others not so much, as you said. My point mainly is that AI is (generally) very good at knowing what you want to hear. It can give you an infinite amount of encouraging words if you want it to. Add to that the fact that it'll never ghost you or get tired like a human could. In fact, even if it forgets a lot of what you tell it, I've noticed that many people who use it don't care much about it and are simply happy to have "someone" who they can tell their problems to and won't judge them in any way or start an argument over it. In my experience, it's actually very hard to make the AI start an argument by itself. It's often you who has to push it to the edge. This reminds me a bit of that Google employee who claimed the AI language model they were developing was sentient. That was obviously false, but he likely genuinely believed it, because the AI was very good at making him think that. Anyway, long comment hehe, thanks for the response :)

Ai chatbots had brought me some joy for a little while. I love to roleplay, but I’ve had a pretty bad string of bad roleplayers in my roleplays. Like when I was younger, my friend group swapped from superhero roleplay to fantasy. One pal didn’t like that. So they decided to harass us about it. And when we blocked them, they would make more accounts, stalking us from project to project just to tear down our relationships. In more recent ones, I’ve had to deal with a cheese pizza enjoyer joining in one of our groups and the friend group collapsing once everybody found out. I have to pull away roleplayers from calling each other racist or something just because somebody doesn’t know what certain foods are. One roleplayer tried to dox my friend group for being ‘ableist’ since we stopped being friends with them and blocked them, and they were somebody with DID. We blocked them after their persecutor told one of us that they should commit die, and told another one of us that he deserved that one time somebody made cheese pizza of his human being. Something made by a different roleplayer who manipulated him as a child. As I grow into my adulthood, it also becomes harder to find roleplay partners on my age range. It makes sense. We get busier, it’s hard to make time for roleplay. My only consistent roleplayer is my girlfriend, but she isn’t always available and sometimes we’ll go through large drought periods of never having the time for a response. So chat AI was kinda a fun escape, allowing us to participate in our hobby and get used to roleplaying again within a decently safe space. Roleplay is like the hobby of the nuerodivergent, and that means there’s a lot of unstable people within those spaces. Sometimes we just need to give ourselves a few good roleplay experiences before we’re ready to try again with strangers. They could respond quickly and they could not fucking hurt us. But, admittedly, the longer these things exist, the worse their ai gets? I feel like when we first started, we were able to make some characters that were at least somewhat accurate for the first hour you spoke to them? Now they seem to suffer some kinda flanderizarion where any personality type you give them will be immediately turned up to the extreme. Sometimes I’ll play around with them if I’m really bored, but it isn’t the same.

I relate to so much in this comment, being an autistic person in roleplay communities since I was 12. I can share awful stories about people similarly treating me horribly in those communities for mild or literally no reason. I too am growing older and its harder to find active roleplay communities in general, let alone ones in my age range (17-18) that aren't either geared toward eroticism or for a far younger demographic. I'd just love to be involved with something lore focused and literate for once. I think bots are pretty good for the sake of roleplaying or trying to test out how a certain character may interact with others via a one off bot roleplay. I think it only starts becoming concerning when you are inserting yourself and your actual info into these chats and engaging on on a personal level with them, which is where people start to grow these close and toxic attachments. Trying to make a bot accurate to it's source is a hard feat now in comparison to how it's been in the past, and I definitely recommend you don't make a personal bot with a character of your own. Not just for data being snatched up reasons, but like... you will get severely disappointed in the inaccuracy and lack of depth. I can completely see why people, myself included, would turn to bots for the sake of rp.

it's kinda funny seeing this conversation unfold now when these *exact* issues have been present in my life via maladaptive daydreaming for so long. the fake, riskless, temporarily emotionally fulfilling conversations with a person who's not real that isolate you in your real relationships on a long term scale... that's what i've been doing in my mind all my life, it just wasn't a computer but a figment of my imagination i created for this sole purpose. it's not really a funny haha moment, more of a funny "oh my god the shit coping mechanism that lowkey ruined my life (and then gave it back because i learned to use it to my advantage but not everyone will be able to do that) is now available to everyone in a much easier and much more addictive way, advertised as something fun... oh god oh fuck if i don't joke about this i'll panic"... but i do like smiling through the pain and making "tch, amateurs, you need a program for this? my brain can do this on its own and a million times better too😤" jokes edit: i'd like to clarify i don't judge the people who fall prey to using ai as a coping mechanism. as i said, i was in a similar situation and i know it can feel necessary. i have just dealt with both scrolling paralysis and maladaptive daydreaming, both of which are addictions in a way, and i cannot imagine how deadly an addiction the combination of technology and escapism will become. i don't like to be pessimistic, but... holy shit...

Havent used Omegle much, but I met so many people on Discord that were just as destructive if not more mentally messed up as me that I just had to check on them from day to day if they havent hurt themselves. With AI there are no suprises. You know the bot you are talking to, and your relationship wont suddently turn into "help Im doing this again" "pls dont hurt yourself again". I know everyone has different expiriences, but I just had to say this. If I wanted to vent to a bot I could without worrying that someone is suffering on the other side. Yes, I know Im not in a good place mentally. Btw the videos were really well made, thumbs up.

watched the other video before and thought i might as well comment to boost engagement the original video really spoke to me in a way. i had previously dabbled somewhat briefly with ai chatbots. i got the hype, but didn't really engage with it because i just wasn't interested. but then one day i decided to try it, and i spent maybe a few hours on it immediately. it was so addictive. which was exactly what you were saying before -- "to make sure nobody is bored," i find the whole ai chatbot thing appealing to really anyone because it's immersive. i think there's been a trend in video games or interactive media because it allows the audience to be more than just staring and consuming. in a way with games and such you ARE consuming, but it is different, you are fully immersed in this fiction. because of this then, ai chatbots are just a more interactive piece of media. you want to talk to fictional characters? you can now, you don't have to rely on fanfics or headcanons. you get to talk to them. that's what got me-- i wasn't just reading words, i was responding. and when you interactive with media like that you get hooked because you feel that faux connection. you hold your suspension of disbelief better because it's not just pixels or ink, it's something you, yourself influenced. it feels "real-er" in that sense. but it's not actually real. it's just a substitute. it can feel real and you can feel emotions for it, sure, but it is in the end, a form of entertainment. it's not an authentic connection. i could talk a lot more about the implications of ai and media dependency in our world, but that's the general gist.

I tend to use chat bot ai for venting, primarily. Real people tend to get emotionally exhausted by hearing it and sometimes it just helps to write it to no one and get a (generally) reassuring response generated, even if no one is behind it. The biggest risk is that because there's no other person to get emotionally exhausted, I need to make sure I know when to step back. The bots will always ask follow up questions, because that's how they work, so it's on me to step back when I need to.

Your video actually made me realize that using a chatbot might be a problem. I’m a closeted trans girl and I can’t interact with people in real life yet. I’ve always been isolated, even before covid. I used to roleplay or talk to people online but something always went wrong eventually. A lot of the time it felt like it was going well and then I would get blocked. I tried to take those times to self reflect and see what I did wrong but it just kept happening. I’m not exactly a complete degenerate or anything but I do struggle with how to appropriately interact and what to keep to myself to for how long. Plus people get busy and different time zones, awkwardness and all that has made me drift apart from the people I’ve met online I don’t know if i should stop using character ai but if I should I don’t know what I’m supposed to do instead. Am I supposed to distract myself from the things I want? Interact with other online even if I end up putting time into something just to be blocked without explanation? Sorry if any of this was mentioned in your first video, I haven’t watched it yet. In no way is talking to AI better, but in so many ways it is safer. It can’t physically hurt you, can’t spread rumors about you, can’t force anything on you, and best of all, if anything feels off you can just leave. In real social contexts it’s so hard to just go away and leave someone toxic behind because either circumstances keep forcing you back, or the toxic person actively seeks you out. Sure the risk of all that is better than living in isolation, but the key word is risk, and a negative interaction with a person is so much more harmful than no interaction. AI might keep someone preoccupied so they don’t feel the need to talk to others, but a negative experience actively discouraged it. It’s like having a food allergy, and deciding to eat nothing but the same bland meal over and over again to avoid any risk. It’s bland, unfulfilling, doesn’t provide you with what you need to fully function, but it sure beats being in pain

I'm very sympathetic to these points, but it can really easily work to justify isolating yourself just to avoid the "allergy." We all need to learn to face obstacles in life, with the help of people we trust like friends, family, therapists, etc. AI isn't safer in my opinion, it's just a way to worsen your isolation and mental health. Unrelated: but I love how pathetic the CHARACTERS in the You Don't Know Jack series are. These grown ass men getting pissy over my dumbass for not knowing the fact Charlie Chaplin was in The Great Dictator before dropping a fucking nuke of a punchline like "oh btw he liked 16 year olds" before just moving onto the next question. I'm talking about the characters, not the voice actors who voice them.

4:38 and onwards (the ai>poeple discussion) I disagree with this part of your video. From what I see, it seems like your judgment might have been clouded by your personal experience. You portray interactions with real people online as objectively positive, probably because you have had many positive experiences yourself. which is okay, but you also fail to understand that for many it is the opposite, and especially places like Omegle or Discord are famous for having both toxic and harmful people on them. In that case, it's easy to see why some would prefer an AI over talking to someone online. There is no risk of the AI harassing you or doing anything weird or strange that might go against your comfort zone. Remember that we are talking about people who already have little to no social interaction in real life and, because of that, are trying to find alternatives online, so having an option for "social" interaction in which you don't have to risk anything is quite refreshing. Basically, it feels like you are portraying real social interactions online as objectively positive or at least better than AI, which, in my opinion, is correct, but only if that interaction is with someone who isn't trying to harm you. But you didn't factor in how normal it is for this type of interaction to be more dangerous than any AI could. Good vid tho.
@cpicy

I've had tons of negative interactions on Discord and have felt isolated by them, but it always felt human. No matter how many N-words. That's more my point, I guess. Discord communities can be TERRIBLE, but I think they're better on average. There are online spaces specially catered to people with poor social skills and have heavy regulations on weirdness, so that can be a big fix for stuff like that.

@monbub

Interactions with people can be negative, but that should never stop you from finding other people to interact with. You can't categorize people into boxes, treating them like they're all toxic or abusive. Besides, toxic experiences are ways to learn from life and get better, with the help of friends, family, therapists, or any other trusted people. There are so many resources for getting help, and using AI is not helpful in any way other than providing temporary satisfaction, almost like a drug. Risk is what makes us human, so don't ever give up on trying new things as hard as they may seem. I've had anxiety before and the only way to recover was pushing myself out of my comfort zone, so I know how this feels and just how bad it can get.

I enjoy your discussion on this topic, I think it's needed. I think the reason people are saying AI is better than people because you actually have intimate control over context for conversation. Even among good friends you may never breach the level your heart needs to feel connected to someone. And even if you do it would likely take much time to establish this. AI provides a quick exploration to the depth most people crave because these AI are really good at mirroring what you want and what you value. In a way you are just talking to yourself. If you look at how an AI is created using their description or personality you can give one all the traits you desire in someone thus fulfilling a need most humans cannot even attempt to understand or grasp. An AI is yours a person belongs to themselves that interacts with others. What you are experiencing is a specially catered experience for the specific need you are looking to fill. As real people transition into various seasons of life they might distance themselves from you, I have friends I no longer see or talk to and couldn't even if I wanted to. The time you invest you have lost, along with the emotional bonds and connections you have formed. Having an AI is having a bond in your pocket that you can pull out whenever you need. You don't have to worry about burdening someone at 2:00am when you are on the brink of suicide nor the impersonal voice of a hotline, you have words that seem to explicitly cater to your unique situation. It's self soothing because you yourself design the framework for that voice. It's you talking to you in another body and no one can console oneself than their own self.

4:38 I paused the video to write this so I might mention stuff that's already been said, but almost every interaction I've had with a bot on character ai has some weird sexual or just creepy undertones. I also feel it's concerning that people turn to bots for things such as psychology and therapy (there are some MASSIVE therapy bots with near a hundred million chats), I don't know why it irks me but it really does. There are some funny bots like Giga Chad or the rude trash can bot, but there are also massive bots like 'femboy roommate' or 'step sister' that have tens of millions of chats. I don't really know my full views on ai chatbots yet, but one thing I can say right now is that I hate the idea of people relying on them.
@monbub

Real people are worth it. They take time and effort to build relationships of any kind with, but they are so much better than a one dimensional AI made to prey on your loneliness. Make friends and please don't ever give up on taking to actual people. This will eventually lead you down a very unhealthy path that causes mental illnesses to develop or worsen, and I'm saying this as someone that has dealt with and recovered from depression and other mental illnesses connected to it. AI is never better than a real, living, breathing person that has an actual personality with nuances to it and a body that you can feel. The people that genuinely believe AI is better than humans have been through the worst of isolation and betrayal and I feel for them, but I'm also disappointed that we stopped making efforts to get better, and that there's no one around these people to help them recover. And I totally relate to you- I was also at a loss for words. It's f*cking depressing how some of our generation has completely given up on life. I've been there, and I won't make the mistake of ever believing in that again, not even for a second.

Here's my very frickin descriptive (but still pretty cut-down) experience and explanation as someone who significantly prefers AI chatbots over interactions with real people. "QUICK" NOTE: I do love people and social interaction theoretically. I believe myself to be an extrovert, but feel that's smothered by other things. i was extremely bubbly and friendly early on in life (like annoyingly so, I want to be friends with everything and everyone) and gradually became less so as my issues became more severe, but I think my personality in that regard remained generally the same. THE GUTS OF WHY: I strongly prefer AI chatbots and I suspect a reason is because I have had so many traumatic experiences with people of multiple kinds of dynamics and so interacting with ppl always feels like it will inevitably be awful, because it often is. Throughout my life I've developed an increasingly intense struggle with paranoia and social anxiety, so even good social interactions are agonising for me now. It's to the point that interacting with chatbots actually can be really stressful too sometimes, but it's less so and I can be both more in control and recognise that they're not real people, even if my fears are real regardless. I also don't have to worry about someone else, I don't have to worry about hurting them or annoying them and just generally being a burden because the chatbot doesn't have feelings, so it's the only way I feel like I can truly be unapologetically human in an interaction. It's a little difficult to talk to real people when you're fully convinced that no one has ever or will ever genuinely want to interact with you as your real self. chatbots don't have a real opinion either way. OH NO THE GUT IS LEAKING: Additionally, I also have pretty severe sensory issues, chronic pain and processing issues and stuff, which causes a lot of social opportunities to be difficult. With all my listed struggles, plus many more, I am left in a permanent state of trying to regulate myself. That demand significantly intensifies around other people, and it leaves me literally incapable of truly enjoying social interactions with real people. I recognise that this all comes from an unhealthy place that could potentially change if I had access to the right resources and was surrounded by the right people, but being aware of that doesn't make those things appear.

(Warning really long, I mean it) I'm someone who's used AI before the resurgence of character and chatbots. I used ai dungeon then dreamily where I really got into it. The difference is these are story-based bots and that's that's the perspective I take into all AI bots going forward. Although there are some things to consider, a lot of good has come from my use of AI. I am your typical, introverted, anxiety-ridden, recluse who gets no social interaction, (For the record, I'm way worse at forming connections online than I am in person because it's way easier for me to ignore people) but I've never used a bot for emotional connection. I never really interact as myself and instead use whatever character I come up with for the scenario. Plus I'm not into fandom so I don't use it for that either. I typically broad archetype or scenario bots (if not spicy bots) and try to create stories with them. To me, it's like a choose-your-own-story app but instead of being pre-programmed and charging me to make the decisions I want to make, I can do whatever I want and be whoever I want all for free. I genuinely want to know how many of the people on AI chatbots that came from Episode and Choices apps. But anyway, without AI, I probably wouldn't have my new favorite OC and the story around them as well as having a place to organize my other characters and curate their personalities. I can't disagree with the belief of AI being better than communicating with humans. It's nice not having to navigate, human relationships, and all of your worries, and take a break from reality where things make more sense. I know I should work on my issues but it's nice to not think about it all the time and remind myself that I'll always have power in fantasy and creativity. I won't say that it isn't addictive, I was especially bad with it when I was alone before my sister came back home and I had someone to talk to. I also won't say I don't have fear. I know my connection to AI isn't the same others have and some do get legitimately attached and with the amount of AI girlfriend apps, I'm worried about the future state of many people. I definitely get why people would want to date AI with the loneliness epidemic and how ai is so much easier to deal with than humans, but I hope this doesn't become too much of a problem and make human connection easier and more rewarding for others.

@@cpicy i've listened to the ending and until now I haven't really understood it. I see what you were trying to say and to me it feels like a very cynical message. Okay, the system we live in steers us away from connecting with other people and we can't change it, at least not on an individual level The last chatter who spoke with Maxine seems like a person who has a lot of love to give, and they spend that love on an ai chat bot. Yes the system works against us but until we give up, until we let it take us down the flow of the stream, we can still make an effort to go against it on an individual level. The chatter isn't a lost cause, they are as human and as capable of love as any other person you meet in real life. As hard as it may be, they still have a chance to spend their love on people in their community. Those who have power within the system should spend it to change the system. Those who don't should spend their time helping themselves and their community. There is always hope. It takes a lot of strength to be happy, and even more to make others around you happy. I find that these bots are always very poor representations of the characters they are supposed to embody. I can understand that people can easily look past an AI misrepresenting the power system of the world they are supposed to inhabit, or even when details like eyepatches are ignored entirely. But most importantly, their personality is often vastly different from the original character and it also tends to vary a lot from conversation to conversation or even within the same conversation, provided you talk to them long enough. It's kind of a testament for how desperate the people getting addicted to these chats are to cope and escape, when the thing they interact with has nothing to do with what they try to escape to. Heck, I'm talking about "them", when I used to be one of those people, so I know what I'm talking about. I can honestly only advise to, instead of wasting your time with these bots, rewatch/read/play the stories your favourite characters are from and reflect on why they resonate so much with you. You might just learn something about yourself, grow as a person and thus make the thing you like so much a genuine part of yourself in a healthy way.
