Last week Plant Lovers, I had 45 minutes to kill so popped into my favourite local nursery - fitzroynursery... - and there on the sale table (or the 'table of death!') - was a somewhat battered large specimen of an orchid with no label and no flower to identify it - at half price! Heaven! You can immediately see it's some form of Dendrobium speciosum hybrid, but to get to this size would take years and in bloom it would cost hundreds of $$$! SO I snapped it up and in this video we'll unearth it, check it's root system and re-pot it. We'll have to wait until spring to see a) it will flower and b) if it's any different to the other Dendrobium speciosum hybrids I have! Part of the thrill!
I have a play list of care videos for Australian Dendrobiums here: • AUSTRALIAN DENDROBIUMS
And my other bargain purchase Dendrobium speciosum bloomed and I made a care video about that here: • How to care for Dendro...
And this is the Mycorrhizal fungi I use but just google around to find one recommended where ever you are: biostim.com.au...

Awesome find Matthew. What a bargain. Hopefully you will do a video when it finally does bloom for you so we can all see what she looks like. Cheers Helen - Sydney Australia

I agree with you on the not waiting ten years to get to blooming size! I just started orchid growing 3 years ago, am 69 now so like you, time is becoming more precious!

speciosum is one of the few species that I find grows exceptionally well in inorganic media (e.g. leca, lava rock). The other Aussie types don't grow well in inorganic for me, even the 1/2 speciosum hybrids, but the species is happy as a clam. Saves me time repotting because they grow a dense mat of roots so I just plunk it into a larger pot when necessary and don't bother disturbing the roots.

Hi Matthew, nice repot, hopefully will bloom soon. I have one seedling which is growing slowly! I've had her for 6 yrs but she is in leca and I think she doesn't like it. I'm going to transfer her to bark and put it outside this summer. What's the lowest they can take?
@helloplantlovers
@helloplantlovers 5 месяцев назад
Thanks for watching - hmm - not sure I could pronounce a lowest - but they certainly will take the odd night at a few degrees below zero if they get plenty of light and relative warmth during the day. If you are in Australia then you'll be fine. Good luck!

Good afternoon Mathew, I nearly died when I saw and you said you got that magnificent specimen for half price, how blessed can you get? It's like finding the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow! I bought a cattleya at the start of the year, and it has given me one new shoot, growing steadily but slowly. Is that a dendrobium and not perhaps a cattleya? I am not an orchid expert so I am not criticizing you, I killed all my plants through sheer ignorance. I get so annoyed with myself just thinking about it. I started again with a couple miniature and two large Phalaenopsis and they all have new leaves, so hopefully I am doing not too bad this time. I trust they will just keep growing well continuously. Have a super day, hope get more specials. Kind regards.

Thanks for watching - this is most definitely an Australian Dendrobium hybrid of some sort.

Excited to see what the flowers look like! 🙏☺️☀️ Thanks for sharing your videos & your experiences! I love listening to your voice - such calm, relaxing effect it has on me ☺️. Greetings from a Finn 🇫🇮 in Switzerland 🇨🇭 with around 200 orchids of about 13 species at home.

Hi Mathew😌🙌That's a big beautiful specimen there🥰🤲💖I grow a dendrobium . speciosum x gracillicaule. It's flowering size😌🙏I use dolomite lime mixed in my water for most plants that grow in or around limestone in nature. I enjoyed watching very much🤲🌟

I look forward to seeing what the flowers look like! That unusual little growth you pointed out may have been an aborted flower spike. I had that happen when I waited too long to resume watering after a winter drought period.

Oh interesting! I'm not quite sure what had happened to the plant before I bought it - some weird chopping and damage! Heigh ho.....we'll see what happens! Thanks for watching!

Hi i bought a speciosum hillii with flowers, seller said its 11 years old lol, but i notice the eyes that should be a new growth dried up, is that normal in speciosum, its my first time owning a speciosum.
@helloplantlovers
@helloplantlovers Месяц назад
Not sure what you mean by eyes? If you are talking about the nodes at the tip of the cane, don't worry. If you mean a new growth at the base of the cane that has died then there's a problem.
@JulieLovesOrchids
@JulieLovesOrchids 29 дней назад
@@helloplantlovers ty for ur reply, its the new growth, they r dry as they r brown, and when i poke it with my fingers i found out its empty, not sure if its something wrong with it, i unpotted and it was root bound but seems the roots are not dead. Theres a bit of yellowing on the bottom of the pseudo bulb, its under observation, crossing my finger it will live. Ty
@helloplantlovers
@helloplantlovers 29 дней назад
@@JulieLovesOrchids Oh...well they do like to be pot bound so that isn't an issue. It could be over watering? Let it dry out between waterings.
@JulieLovesOrchids

@@helloplantlovers i found the culprit, on the closer look, i saw some scales on the bulb :(, is it treatable lol or goes to the bin? Thought found a bargain hahaha, but i don’t want to infect my other orchids. Or just treat it with neem oil and observe? Ty
