What process do you recommend for reintroducing adeniums back outdoors now that winter is over. It's safe to bring them out but too many different opinions on how. The most common appears to put them out in morning sun (east facing), no water until new growth is seen. At that time it would be ok to repot and trim. Others say to repot while dormant, put it out and wait to water until new growth seen. It's a tad confusing so would like your opinion for what you do. BTW - love EcoGro and have several plants from them. TIA
Hi Katrina, thanks for reaching out. There are multiple ways to do it and I dont see any issue with what you mentioned. I am yet to place mine outside yet, but I will do so this weekend. I will place mine outside at night (to avoid any shocking) in a area where they will not get any sun for 3-4 days. Then I will move to a place that only gets morning sun (east facing) for 3-4 days. Then to final locations after that in either full sun or partial sun. I will water twice a week (Wednesday and Sunday). For repotting it can be done while dormant but they need to be inside or in a green house during the dormant season and only water maybe once ever month or month and half or if you feel it getting soft. Repotting during the non-dormant season can be done pretty much anytime in tucson. You just need well draining soil (ecogro makes a good one), morning sun only, and light water every 2 weeks until you see it growing then you can. Ecogro can assist with repotting, if needed.
@@theblackbonsaiguy1687 I'm comfortable with most repotting. I'll probably stick with my mix that has been working for the last 3 years, which turns out is close to Tanks. I will be modifying it a bit this year by adding some pumice in addition to perlite. Thank you for your thoughts on moving them out. I am working at developing an area with some shade cloth outside this weekend. Hope it works. Be well.
Nice video! Hard to grow desert roses in Montana. I just put mine outside June 1st on my porch…getting morning sun. They only get outside for 3 months here and then back into a heated greenhouse. I put some out last year too early and they all rotted because I watered them and they got cold. Also had the wrong soil….too water retentive. Been a challenging plant for me. Thank you for mentioning your watering cycle….helps a lot!! They rot at the drop of a hat if they get too much. Persnickety little things!!🤔
Do not water them in winter…..They are from the Desert, where they can go months without water. In the wild, they store lots of water in their Trunk (hence the fat caudex). They store the water for the dry season which can be up to 6 months. I live in Florida, and my mom lost one during a cold front that brought lots of rain (not good, cold and wet). Also, I grow mine in a rocky bonsai medium for Fast Drainage(It helps during rainy season in FL). In “winter” I didn’t water mine and they bloomed prolific in spring, getting ready for their second bloom. I don’t let them get Leggy so after this bloom, I will give them a nice “Haircut” to make it them fuller on top. Also, find a Good Slow release fertilizer. I think I use 16-8-12. The one on the left is a grafted Obesium, the one on the right is an arabicum. The arabicum are known and prized for their thick caudex. I prefer the simple Obesium for bonsai-like growing, however, because you can train the roots in interesting ways over time with reports and positioning. It's kind of like an "upside-down" bonsai where training the roots is cooler than trying to shape and train the branches.
Hello, I just subscribed to-your video and love it. I also bought my Desert Rose at Lowe’s in Las Vegas same pot, they had usedDesert Rose premium potting soil. I’m hoping they will do fine. The water drains nice and freely. I will try and take a picture of them
Hi Nathaly, when you say bright light are you talking about growing them inside or bright light as in the sun? Most desert roses have gone dormant for the year, so it sounds like yours might be as well. What state are you in?
Let me clarify. There is a scar. But that is a natural scar. A grafting scar would be evident on any plant for upwards of 5-10 years minimum. Usually around 15-25 years. That tree is certainly not that old.
I respectfully disagree! A good grafting line overtime will have fade away. This one will fade away in due time but I can see it, the graft line is right below the base of the three limbs, its a perfect horizontal line (it may not be visible on camera but it is there) and not consistent with the section of the tree below it.
