Uploaded again because I chopped off the beginning.
Hey there, please bare with me as I get back into the swing of things of making videos for you all.
The color story:
I started out dying my entire head Feria Hi Lift Multi Faceted Shimmering Hair Color, B61 Downtown Brown, Cool Brown way back in August. Garnier Nutrisse in Soft Black 20 for the top and Garnier Nutrisse Ultra Color Ultra Intense Red for Darker Hair Permanent Color, R3 Light Intense Auburn for the last three rows of locs. I then went to Sally's and got L'Oreal Excellence HiColor HiLights in Red with a 40 creme developer.

@BRESLINE I have only had the finger done once and it needs a touch up. It was done February of this year and the first three letters has some sections that have faded. It's not too bad though. The letters closer to the finger nail is what has faded the most but the letters closer to the back just kind of flared and thickened up a bit.

I was semi free forming for several months and recently latched my locs... I think after a while you get curious to see what they will look like with the parts exposed.... I am planning to freeform through the winter...washing and separating. I love your color... It seems like everyone has jumped on the color wagon this fall except me...I am tempted but I still don't really know what colors I feel like committing to :)

the red-brown looked really good on you but i agree that darker in the winter is nice. new subbie. hope you'll keep em coming.

I've had black permanent dye "wash out" when my hair was loose but I attributed it to the henna that I had put on my hair before.

@ThaGreatSage There are a couple of things to consider. I assumed that because I wanted thick locs I should do less of them than the 120 I had before. Some of my locs are as thin as my old set of locs despite having 40 some odd locs less. It's just how my hair condenses. To get the size that I wanted each loc to have, 60 probably would have been the ideal but I would lose fullness. I wish I had more fullness now so I'm glad I did not combine anymore like I was considering.

@Keeb820 Dying hair is easy in my opinion. The hardest part is picking out your color and determining if you have to lighten your hair to get the results you want. I think typical beginner mistake are not buying enough color, putting the color on the roots too early if you are lightening your color, and not rinsing it out all the way. If you could have somebody assist you the first time I think you would be fine after that.

@MyName83www There are protein fillers you can buy at Sally's to add to your dye so that the color will bond better. I've also heard that if your hair is damaged then a demi permanent color lasts longer because the molecules are too large to fade on damaged hair.

@MyName83www First make sure you are using permanent color, but even that is not "permanent" due to some environmental factors. It's always good to really deep clean your locs before applying color because products can prevent the "taking" like a barrier. Overprocessed hair won't allow the cuticle to seal, thus you'll have fading. Harsh water be it hard water or chlorine has chemicals that can and will alter hair color.

@MyName83www ohhh no problem. I use neutralizer shampoo like the kind you use to shampoo out a relaxer.

@Shahz39 Thank you! I will probably not let this set get very long. Just past my shoulders is probably as long as I might let these grow.

@NappyBelle These are all permanent dyes I used. I will only touch up the roots with permanent dye from this point on. If the red or black needs a refresher than I will use semi permanent. You have every reason to be concerned because it is a chemical process, but considering that we really don't do anything else chemically to locs you should be fine. I think if you repeatedly use permanent color all over, then you run into problems.

I think it more depends on what the end result you want to have. My ideal was Lauryn Hill like locs, I'm not quite there because I realize that my hair is not as thick as hers. Freeforming gets me as close to that affect as I'm going to get. How do you plan on maintaining them? I think 55 palm rolled locs would be too large but may work fine for free formed locs. Honestly I would start with more than you think you want because you can always combine.

so totally unrelated to hair but I noticed that you have a tattoo on your finger and I wanted to know how yours is able to hold up? I have 2 on my fingers and I've gotten them touched up twice and it still fades away..

Any suggestion on rinsing color out. I've dyed my dreads at home twice and each time I do atleast 4-5 extensive rinses till I assume it's all out. I wait a month or longer before washing again and color will still be coming out. And even recently when I dyed my hair blk the color is still rinsing out three washes later. Anyone that can help, help!

Do u use permanent dye or semi-permanent? I want to use permanent black dye on my locs but I am afraid it might be too harsh. I don’t want my roots to become thin...
