After trying to make money in this for a while I’ve decided to be content with just doing instrumentals and not having to deal with shady people….. but I have a job that pays the bills so I’m not dependent on music revenue. I love making music

Producers need to become performance artists and/or content creators.

As a producer I don’t sweat it. I make music mostly for me. If others enjoy it…cool. But some recognition is a good thing people should get credit for what they create. 😎👍🏽

I found myself very mad a couple months ago about not gettin sales or a placement or some in return for the countless hours that ive put into beatmaking, but the other day i had a friend who i used to make beats with come over and he was so hype about the beats that i thought were trash cause nobody wanted to buy them or beacause they were gettin rejected by "bigger artists", so now i changed focus and came back to just having fun with it

I'm currently in school for business & one of the main things they preach is that no business who is solely reliant on another to survive will fail. Your point at the end of the video about everyone building their own infrastructure to combat issues like the ones presented in the video is excellent. I hope more producers do so. I think if producers were able to band together to make an entity/platform, problems like these could be alleviated but everyone is too focused on self for that to happen in such a large scale.

Not my primary source of income so I still love it. I make what I want when I want. Just depends on what you in it for I guess.

Yes it does suck as a producer and artist I noticed a lot of artists don’t have or even want to have a main producer smh and some producers only want to deal with you if your buzzing

I think it’s more of a value problem. We as producers don’t value our position. They can sense it and treat us like we’re fans. This game is like high school, they only want to work with who cool. You gotta treat THEM like fans too in a way.

More education is what's needed. These young producers are so hungry to get on and it's understandable but they need to see the industry for what it is. These rappers don't care about you, they just want to get to the money and if they don't got to pay you, they won't.

As an aspiring producer I can see where this makes sense to have your own platform. Most Rappers are so flakey in several aspects of business, that I just want to pursue my passion and not worry about the human element. Ave peace my bro. Here’s my take on this . Producers / beat makers come a dime a dozen. I believe they’re not getting the respect they think they deserved because most of them aren’t real creative producers. Think about it , a kid gets FL studio and watches a RU-vid video “ make beats like” So now he or she is doing the same Vibe as everyone else who’s watching those beats like videos. My point is it’s become saturated with the same thing , so the rapper will look at you like you’re a dime a dozen producer. I remember when making beats was exclusive. I came up under DJ Clark Kent. Back then we could get 5 to 10k a beat because that beat wasn’t feeling or sounding like everyone else, and that was with samples the labels would clear. These days there’s not much creativity. Every FL new beat maker has to have 808’s and rolling hi hats in his music because the culture now dictates that as being a must / hence the beats all feel the same . These DAWS are extremely affordable, young kids are following what they hear and see . So you’re not gonna be looked at as a Jedi beat maker , unless you come up with that rapper such as drake and boy wonder or 40.. great topic. Stay creative y’all.

I been in the recording scene since the 90's. I finally tapped out in my 30's. These days I found joy in just making remixes. No dealing with rappers, sessions and drama lmao

Producers need a Guild same way actors have to protect their work and livelihood. Producing is too roguish with no standards of pay or protection for the work you put in. This is exactly why actors have a guild. Producers def need one.

No rapper / artist walking better not walk-in any studio wearing ( sneakers ) that cost between $1000 - $ 10,000 dollars and try too tell any producer ! they can’t afford there beat prices is off there rocker! You better go sell some of those sneakers. than come back to the producer with that money in full. ( Because the return on a beat is infinitely higher ! than a return from any sneaker ).

I cant/wont say music production for me sucks because i love it, but i will say its lonely from the trust and authenticity of the artists ive dealt with...i stay positive and have better results and feel more mutually respected when i collaborate with people who are multi instrument players and beat makers like myself and it works

People are quick to hate on Ice Spice but I've seen her bring her producer Riot into interviews. Including shouting him out in her biggest hits. Artist understanding it is a partnership.

13:08 1 of the things I really paid attention to in the industry is ; All the Rappers that had a reputation of paying their producers well (50cent, WestsideGunn, E40, T.I. etc) had very Robust and promising careers. Majority of Rappers that had a reputation of not paying their producers are on the sideline complaining how the record industry got over on them. Not saying you can’t find the opposite but it’s very slim.

Rappers have inflated egos (most, that I know at least). Producers spend more on our craft I think and that gets overlook, undervalued, under appreciated. Let me get that beats for $30, son!

It’s really hard to make a lil money making beats. It’s similar to making music videos locally for artists how I do, I easily charged $500 a vid & did 5-7 videos a month! It’s a nice starting point! With beats, just find local artists that like ya work & lease them to them for $50 a pop. I know anyone can do that & bring in atleast $3k a month as a starting point!

To build a musical relationship feels harder then finding the right Girl/Boy 😅 im doing this for 2years stil learning 1 babystep at a time on my own pace. I have moments that i think why the F am i doing this but in the end its becuz i love to craft music even if its unheared i just love to make music cuz it relaxes me and gives me a good feeling when i manage to complete a track. I do feel i give more love then i get back from some people and that stings not gonne lie... I lost a friend of 20+ years, not even a week ago over a drum break I made in 2008 with his ASR-10, and i recently found it on a dusty cassette tape cleaning out my attic, i resample it onto my MPC X se so i can use it for a new song. The 20+ year homie said he needs 1/2 of anything I make off of it because I used his ASR....ME: " i'll burn this tape in front you, my guy" But I thought it through for about 30 seconds and showed my man the door...thoughts?

Yes it does in many ways I can speak from experience being an ole skool new producer where that no one wants to pay for your time or your music I have a few tracks posted on my social media even here not much but I had one as me for the music with no watermarks or my info drops. I was like sure if you pay for it, then he started to insult me and blast me on social media. But it cool it’s not going to stop me.

As far as that whole Fruity Loops/FL Studio narrative.... I look at those people who criticize it as people who never understood the "mechanic versus tool" mentality ... A good mechanic will do good work regardless of the tools he has... Yes there will be certain tools better than others to help make his job quicker and easier, but his knowledge and expertise is what really counts regardless of the tools used . I have experimented with various things over the years, hardware and software ... In the early 2000s I started out with entry level software that was coming into the game (an early copy of fruity loops may have been one of them), as my passion for knowledge and making music grew, I actually got more interested in working on hardware so I copped MPCs and workstation keyboards over the years ( mpc 2000xl, mpc 1000, mpc 2500, korg triton, yamaha motif). I did My thing ,made money selling beats on that era... Years down the line I reverted back to using DAWS/Software, got reintroduced to FL Studio...learned to master it and ise it with my accompanying daw of choice. Ultimately, I just learned that I can do the same thing with that system that I was doing when I had hardware . And of course, having some extra third party plugins helped me to evolve . All in all, there's no reason for people to bash FL Studio ... It's a dope tool just like anything else you can use to produce... But you still have to be the master mechanic regardless of what you use .

Internet makes people think you need to find rappers from other cities. Really we just need to get with who’s around us and make it happen. I know 3 MC’s who are family and we don’t work together even tho we are geographically separated at the moment, we aren’t making use of each other as a resource.

It does suck I remember doing 7 beats for this compilation album that ended on iTunes and 3 of those tracks I had Berner on them before he signed to Taylor Gang and never got paid from the label and it sucks because you spend this time investing in your craft learning and spending on gear. I’m not saying I’m trying to get rich off my music, I’ll be happy if I make about the same from current job that way at least I can do what I love the most and that’s work on music.

The market is flooded. If you’re production career only works if you’re looking to get hooked up with a known rapper you are toast. They don’t need you. Actually the record industry NEVER worked like that. THE OLD HUSTLE WAS…. Get an unknown rap kid, develop him, sign him to proper paperwork, launch him to a single or multiple project deal. Do it again with another one. This “sending your beat to a guy that doesn’t know you and getting mad because he doesn’t respond” thing is naive. Maybe we need to put on our coat and go outside and look for talent. Find a cipher or hang around high schools or local venues, then use your talent and influence to make them a star. It used to be a risk . You’re gonna have to put out . But the artist will be yours for the life of the deal . Get your name up, get your hits up, Then known artist will be knocking at your door . We either lazy or lost. Jermaine did it. Puff did it. Dre did it. Andre Harrell did it . Master P did it . Neptunes did it . Mailing in beats to millionaire rappers? Old saying that will ALWAYS be true… If you don’t own the property, you’re a peon . Nobody owes you respect . Developing new artist is the only way to not get jerked . Let’s put our coats on. The biggest problem is everyone wants to be a producer but no one wants to read the music industry book. Lets start there no one wants to read.

Last time I counted I have over 400 “ideas” / “tracks. Not all finished but I have a catalog I do t like to share with people because mf will use your shit if you give it out. I only let tracks out in the wild that I know I’m going to possible have to keep track and sue, or it’s a free for all joint. Producers Union. I’m in.

I enjoy your channel very. I've been doing music since 1988. I stopped doing music for people in 2010. I have produced an entire album with no credit what so ever. After getting jacked by a manager, I gave up production. I've spent thousands of dollars on equipment and programs. I've took the time to learn my craft, all to be pimped by these rappers. I'm done. I'm scared to even post any new music I've done for fear of some rapper stealing.

I still call FL "Fruity Loops" as a term of endearment lol. I don't understand the beef with FL, especially in Hip Hop. Hip Hop is about making music regardless of your limitations...

Maybe 15 years ago I was at Smartbar in Chicago and was introduced to someone who produced Kanye's earlier music. He was an average guy and I forgot his name and forgot what he looked like the next day. Still wondering who that was.

I like all the Daws for different reasons. The purpose of communication is to communicate so if they say Fruity Loops or FL studio, it doesn’t matter to me as long as I know what they are communicating. If they are doing to to belittle the daw, who cares. I didn’t create it and it’s not my work being criticized. I make music for the love and fun of creating music. I don’t plan on ever getting paid for it, so if I do it’s a bonus.

Music production on streaming platforms has gotten completely overshadowed by the "white boy beats" genre .... aka LoFi. You won't gain traction unless you cater your style to that niche.

First I'm old AF and been in and around music for decades so a lot of my opinions are coming from doing music earlier on. To me words that describe things have lost there meaning. So many people are just players, guitar, piano, and etc but they call themselves musicians almost from the start of trying to learn to play. I think the word producer has become the same thing. Back in my day a producer was person with a lot of skills musically, technically in the studio, knowledge of music biz, knowledge of the current state of music, and how to handle lots of different types of people to get the best of them from them. Today someone writes a beat or a section of a song, they automatically demand a producer credit. No a song has one producer or a establish production team. They oversee everything. Like in my day there there songwriters, studio musician, recording engineers, studio singers, and related skilled people and a producer who oversee and brings it all together to be a recording. I worked in the corporate world and there most how things work is in a pyramid shape, in music the producer would be the top of the pyramid. But then corporate world start trying something called Matrix management so layers of management with many people on each level. That was a mess too many people trying to tell you what to doing while others are trying to tell you too. So I think problem today is music everything is like a Matrix too many producers, it needs to get back to one producer that oversee a lot of highly skilled people. Someone might be the Beat maker on many records, but they are producer on another. being the person who picks the skilled people for a recond and blends them in to a great recording.

Nobody New is practicing Hip Hop You’re living in some new kind of Rap culture where rappers run the game . Thats not Hip Hop Graffiti, dancing , DJs , emcees got the same level of respect .

The modern rap ain't hip-hop. It's rap-pop. Hip-hop music is part of the subculture which is no longer mainstream.

Whatever happened to producers finding Rappers to rap on their beats and then putting the song out themselves? That's how it used to be.

There is no money in it and there are a bunch of people using status to take advantage of the low man on the totem pole. But that is just hip hop in general.

Years ago I matched with someone on Okcupid who laughed when I told her FL Studio was my DAW of choice. This wasn't long after 9th Wonder praised FL as his primary means of production, so the stigma was still shocking at the time. But y'know, ignorance is bliss.

I've been composing music sense the 80s and the game of music was never easy and hip hop no exception I remember going to actual session shopping beats they called it the hot chair your beat can get picked up and used if they don't know you your beat would be drop even if they recorded on it I'm still composing but I love music I never maid a dime for none my tracks

The creative business sucks, get used to it. Either accept that you're just in it for self expression or elevate yourself above all it to create a brand. Or in other words: focus on creation without getting paid much or for focus on getting paid with little room left to create yourself.

I'm at the point where I'd rather hear true musicianship again ,and not just general beat makers , Even if it's dope chopped up samples/drums with composing built around it ... I miss that more than anything. Not to say that it's not still out there... but it seems few and far in between these days ...basic sample chops and drum loops gets old quick, basic cookie cutter trap/ drill beats gets old quick. As a producer myself, yes , I do make the music I wish to hear.. whether it's for myself or for the small amount of artists I choose to work with .... But I would like to hear more of that across the board again... There was once a time when it was across the board. I think back to the just blaze era, the early Kanye West era, Organized noise era, Soulquarians era, Dilla, dr dre era, erick sermon, roots, Scarface producers, etc, etc .. I'm sure I may be out the loop of some of the newer artists that may have some of these vibes and sounds. So if anyone reads this, point me in the right direction of who to listen to these days .

I had a shot to work with Mac Miller back in the day and skipped it because I saw that video getting herbed out. Wish I didn't do that.

That happened to me three times and that made me step back from making music for a while. There should be some type of universal simple one page contract that you can print out and have producers and artists signature. My beats got and artist signed to Def jam back when Jay z was president. Immediately after he signed he forgot who I was.

We need to make full songs by ourselves with online services these days you can have a pro singer as a studio musician for a few hundreds. Let’s do that Isaac Hayes shit.

When you're trying to succeed in a genre that was birthed out of a dysfunctional environment and community you have to expect the business around it to be chaotic and dysfunctional as well. Plus the "gate keepers" never expected Hip-Hop to become a global monster, nor did they intend for Hip-Hops participants to prosper off of it.

Music is cheap now. (Rap is not dying it’s just falling off because ngas ain’t taking bout nothing) A smart person can sequence a hit album with a ton of free beats. With 20k tops to the producers. 25 songs. No points. Done. Put a hit rapper on top of it and it’s a wrap. (Unknown hit rapper that is) The internet method is lying. It used to work. Start a production company or a label. Find investors and quarterback the whole deal. Free game!

I post my beats on RU-vid in hopes that someone will steal it and use it on an album or mixtape... I have the best music lawyer in Seattle, and we will happily sue tf out of a big name label or artist. If I find out a smaller name artist is using my stuff and getting paid; well, that's when things get gangsta 😅 But if that smaller name artist isn't making money off it and I find out. Then I just have a talk with them about conducting business correctly and wish them the best with being successful.

The truth is, modern hip hop is over saturated with "producers"; everyone using the same sounds, same plugins, etc. To further the problem, most in the game have no musical training and thus having to rely heavily on loops, instead of learning and playing instruments and being creative/innovative through that avenue. Andre 3k releases an instrumental album and the first thing cats do, is sample it. The absolute f? Modern hip hop is an absolute joke. Everyone with a computer and a DAW now call themselves a producer or a rap artist. Its laughable and borderline insulting to musicians and real producers who really are about that life.

Build your own musical fort, let no one in unless there is a clear musical , friendship and buisness relationship (No exceptions! ) this may take some time , and you will DODGE alot lot of fake,Takers, inexperience and gehtto fablous people all claimimg to be the next best thing. ( Some might be..You never know ) ...However Doing this will save yourself alot of time and headache and keep you focus on creating music that you can enjoy with those who are close to you....keep in mind There are alot of Good Artist out there that really appreiate the hard work and enjoy doing collaborations and building something solid and trust worthy...SO Go ahead keep building your skills; you have you, you don't need validation from rappers ,singers other musicians and producers if you enjoy what you do .....So just take your time, Feel people out, and continue making great music !

My cousin is part owner of CMG.He asked to hear my beats.Then he offered me a 70/30 split. After I held the phone and didn't respond he says "Cuz I wouldn't do you like that." I have not talk to him since. I taught him the game.

Lord Finesse had to sue Mac Miller for jacking the "Hip 2 Da Game" beat on "Kool Aid & Frozen Pizza". I corrected some random up & coming rapper on Instagram who was rapping on the beat and credited it to Mac Miller a few months back. And Lord Finesse is a legend with a legacy, not some rando internt producer. If they gonna do that to a great what are they gonna do to you?

Just some bs from a kid below, feel free to scroll past. Honestly I kinda feel bad for the peeps who aren't really business inclined as producers. Because making some money off of music isn't really that hard. I'm only 18, just got outta highschool, with only like 2,000 followers in totality and I've made my first stack from just my beats in the last year. Having good beats doesn't 'sell' by itself, you have to market, and network and expect to get a bunch of no's. If you're only trying to mess with buzzing artists or because they're larger than you, it's really obvious. If you're genuine about working with people then you'll make something dope. You gotta gave good instrumentals though. It's not for everyone for sure, not everyone can wait to harvest the seeds they sow. I made 100$ this summer working hard as shit and sending out a bunch of messages and Tracks every day for almost a year, I'm just now harvesting what I've over the last year. Tldr, shit ain't for everyone and that's fine. You just have to know if it's for you, or if you're hungry enough for it to actually learn the "business".

So artists don’t want to pay for the tracks they rap on…. and labels wouldn’t pay producers if producers didn’t reach out or threaten to sue to get paid. Less 10% of money made from music goes to the musicians who made it. Remember that.

It only bothers me when people say "i always thought fl studio was a toy" but knowing what can be done with the DAW that i doubt any child would know if it wasnt taught to them otherwise, and it continues to get better with time, its like the dumbest statement someone could make about the software...

People aren’t getting credit because they produced the beat not the actual song. What’s happened for years is that producers that lack talent pay people for beats then claim it as their own. Artists learned this from them and are jerking producers and paying people for beats to cut the producer out and claim the full track as their own. Where do you think the term ghost writer and ghost producer came from? It comes from the aforementioned. This is where pop/rock producers get it right. They are part of the team/band. Beatmakers became stupid as f-ck. Getting an SP or MPC then going on RU-vid with every beat they make just to get some attention, shaking the camera up and down while the beat is playing with the stupid ass subject/title of the video; Sunday Morning with the MP or SP, giving away their ideas smh. And everybody wonders why they spend 1-5k on new or vintage equipment and not getting paid. Many have turned into content creators to cash in on the hype of new/vintage gear to help Akai Roland and other companies sell you their equipment because the content creators get more for that than producing/selling beats. Partner with the artists or send them walking. Go out there and discover the next Beyoncé, Rihanna, Taylor Swift, Drake, Jay-z etc..produce the shit out’of them on your release (your name) featuring the artist. Look at what katts like c&c music factory did back in the day. P-Diddy featuring … if you not the main feature you’re not going to make money. Cash out because it don’t last long. Ask The neptunes, timbaland and all the rest. Get red hot, they will all come for you, and pay you your money and they will all drop you like a bad habit for the next hit thing. 🫡

The term being a Rapper has become corny and embarrassing. Rappers aren’t really good at the craft these days, it’s the beats that carry them. Rappers are always in the media for something negative and doing thing to go to jail when they are already rich. We need to support the term Emcee more. Emcee’s appreciate the producer more and don’t do it for the fame and money but more for the love of the craft. It’s not all bout getting rich and being controlled by corporations. There are Artist and producers that make a good six figure income from music that we have no idea who they are because they have people that pay for and support their music because they love their music. It’s not as exciting being a producer anymore as for the way the business is nowadays is, at least for rap. People want free beats, people stealing beats, it being so easy to create nowadays waters-down the creativity and overall quality. But I guess it’s fun for the young guys that still stay at home and have access to all the affordable software and have all the time to learn it and get good. I hope people are getting in to it because they love it and not for the money and fame.

When you get into a creative endeavor for the money, you get what you deserve---the industry. It's shady, greedy, grifty and dishonest at its CORE. It used to be the PIMPdom was from record companies and executives, now that they are no longer the gatekeepers(to some at least, not the artist whores who WANT to be pimped) the gatekeeping and sheisty-ness inherent in the industry just migrated down to the creator level. Make music. Put it out or don't. Move on.

But I genuinely want to understand why producers need to have credit if you're already compensated for you work by the artist paying you for the track. I understand if you want credits but why are you entitled to credits ? Genuine question I'm not looking for any smoke. Cause as an artist have had some producers ask for some crazy things which led me to create my own beats so I can see more artist doing this so I'm trying to understand y'all point of view

Wouldn't most of these Rapper have to stay alive or out of prison to pay producers....best get them funds up front!.
