when he got all happy and said "I'm back" only to see something horrifying moments later is honestly heartbreaking

What makes this scene so much more disturbing is the choice of music, the music isn’t slow and solemn like usual, the music is discordant and upbeat, showing how this is the breaking point for Subaru’s sanity.

And let’s not forget that Roswall caused all of this because he had faith in Subaru.

This scene is done so damn well. So freaking well. You can see his denial when he first checks the peoples homes. He knows what he saw, but refuses to believe it until its shown directly to him in broad day light.

2:07, that my friends, is a true face of utter despair and sorrow, can't get any more realistic than this.

I know he is suffering and all but that song is a bop.

This scene is so well adapted from the light novels, before the anime came out I was worried as to how they'd do this scene. I didn't want them to show it immediately, but they pulled it off with flying colours

I'm currently rewatching Re:Zero because my girlfriend got interested and I gotta tell you when I got to this scene I got massive PTSD remembering the amount of torture that Subaru is about to enter in. And then I look at my girlfriend with goosebumps everywhere and said, "Yeah things are about to get really dark after this episode."

I like how Subaru really didn't give a fck to anything until he falls into a pool of blood.

And they call him a simp... Just because he wants to protect those close to him.... Just because his self loathing is so much that he has forgotten how to put himself first. Just because, unlike other anime protags, he is not helping them in krder to get in their pants or get XP or anything like that. he doesn't have anything but kindness.

So that scene in isekai quartet when Kazuma gets pissed at Subaru I think; you have no idea the hell Subaru's been through, and I think of this scene in particular.

見る前まではキャッキャウフフなハーレム物語と思ってたんだがなぁ…… まあこういう話だから好きなんだけど

I like how this show can feel be both a tragedy and a standard shonen hero story at the same time. On one hand, you've got situations like this that can show the bloody horror of the realism going on around him, something a lot of big shonens tend to avoid. But with his reset powers, you get the chance to have that *and* let him have heroic acts as well.

One of the best scenes in Anime. Just pure despair, sadness, guilt, and anger all in one scene. I also love how the music compliments the scene. When the music dropped, you already knew what's going to happen.

The first time where he say "Rem" is absolutely incredible. It gave me shavers. The voice actor of Subaru is so talented

one great thing about this anime is how well timed they inserted songs into such scenes. this scene and that cursed rem-got-dumped-by-subaru episode give me chills everytime.

One of my favorite scenes. Man, the capital arc is so good. Subaru is already loosing his mind from dying a lot on the mansion, and then he goes to the capital only to see everyone dying while returning to the mansion. He then has a mindbreak and things get even worse, with petelgeuse torturing rem and shit. And then after he even thinks he is gonna make it only to loose rem to the white whale and die again, just before trying to give up. That arc is so good, while running from the white whale on the last loop he literally screams saying he doesnt want to die

Now imagine, who doesn't know anything about this anime come across this video. How does one resist such intriguing clip, and not watch this anime.

Subaru suffering has more screentime than subaru's smile

My sanity crashed after this segment. The rest of the night was awfull, got no sleep. Next episode didnt help either... But, thankfully, my brain remembered its just an anime carachter. Not a real person. Still... This segment plus music choice plus EVERYTHING ELSE was VeRy Disturbing. A complete masterpiece of despair

I actually like how much shit he goes through because each life he learns a bit more and it expands on some things that will be used later, yet he still has to struggle to hold on to his mind from the constant pain and fear of dying or seeing his friends die. It’s like the frustration of starting over and over in a video game but with so much more fear and anguish involved.

It's so sad how he literally can't even process what happened. He simply doesn't undersand. Like a child seeing a dead body. It means nothing to him. It was so out of question, his mind simply rejected it. He only understood when he felt the blood on his hands. Literally and figuratively. Yet he still had hope Rem would be alive. Until that was taken from him. Stolen. By his own sloth. And his mind breaks. It shatters. When he came back and saw Rem alive again, it was like glueing his brain back together with tape. Of course it wouldn't be fixed. He goes insane. Rem is alive, but I saw her die. I know she's alive now, but she died. And it was my fault. I won't let it happen again. Then he lets it happen again. Betelgeuse takes her from him. His brain turns to dust. That's why, when he gets to see her again, he has that rant about hating himself. It was his fault Rem died horribly, twice. And Rem's the one to fix it. Subaru went insane because of Rem, and Rem fixed him. I'm not saying she's best girl, just my perspective on this arc for Subaru.

he said "emi- " instead of "rem" in 1:18, listen closely. that's because he's so frightened of what might happened with emilia that he forced himself to sidetrack with thoughts of rem.

I still remember when I first saw this scene. I was shocked and already feeling the despair. Now I’m enjoying the reactions to these Re:Zero scenes and smiling like a lunatic

原作では確かレムの体に十字架の剣が10本くらい刺さってたはず

Of all the great moments in this anime, I don't think anything tops this particular scene. Everything about it was perfect in a truly horrific sort of way. Re:Zero really is a goddamn masterpiece because there are so many outstanding moments like this that just resonate with you well after season one ended.

"Welcome to the party" this is a song for Subaru by Betelgeuse and Witch's cult.

Okabe and Subaru experiencing the sickness of despair of Time leaping and saving your love one again and again

God when Theatre-D kicks in at 0:58.....it's just so perfect. You can't help but feel bad for Subaru as his mental state slowly deteriorates. Edit: Also mad credit to the Voice Actor of Subaru, he did such an amazing job.

There's a lot more you could analyse about this scene but the music going from slow, sorta sad violin to fast paced music with instruments used to create a louder song really hits home subaru realising how bad of a situation he's in. Amazingly well done.

It's funny how despite how powerful the characters are if there's enough bad guys of average strength they can still get overwhelmed. Reinhart is probably the only person who can handle anything you throw at him.

I would say this was the moment Subaru became Heisenberg, but we still got several arcs to go through.

when I watched re zero for the first time, I hated it. It literally gave me stress and made me feel hopeless. Now, Im just going to say, that’s the first fictional piece of ANYTHING that made me feel that way. That’s some good writing right there.
