So basicly the main timeline to other people near Subaru is. He is a near all knowing being who can choose the right choice every time has horrible mood swings and sometimes gets literal crippling depression and sudden panic attacks for litterly no reason, poor subaru.
@@whannabi they probably think that he's always lost in thought and that he's alway coming up with possible future threats and plans to solve them, and that when he has those panic attacks he just realised they were in grave danger. Would be terrifying considering some of those happen days after he "realises" they will happen
I wonder if people around him see the dude just standing there, buffering for a few seconds every now and then and think "Ma, he's doing it again. He'll pull some 5000 IQ bullshit rn" cause it seems to be the case everytime he returns his brain just pauses briefly
Rem and Ram hear a distant "Whaaeeeuuuu", followed, as usual, by Subaru screaming for half a second and panting. They just roll their eyes and get ready for whatever bullshit is about to happen.
I know right, it’s hilarious if you step back and look at it. I didn’t include it in the vid but my favourite one is when Subaru just straight up hugs Rem out of nowhere in front of Kadomon’s shop lmao
@@enjoyereheheh I think Emelia liked him without loops when he helped her look around for her pendant thing and helped her find the lost childs parent. he probably came across dorky, but confident and kind, iirc they spent the whole day together and got sort close i guess?
@@kazutrash I think that Rem especially suspects something, maybe a form of the witches teaparty happening, since he breaks down right after the witches scent gets stronger, and she has stated in the mind break loop about his mood swings always happening after said witch scent strengthenings
From the perspective of everyone else, his only screw up is at the court lol. Now that I think about it, Rem must've been like "wtf" when Subaru went off on himself
Not sure how the anime does it since I haven't watched it, but in the novels at least Rem willingly let Subaru leave due to orders from Roswaal. Incidentally, he'd also sent a message to the knight commander with orders to let Subaru into the castle, using the Roswaal family crest on his attire to point him out (which ended up being unneeded thanks to Priscilla)
@@willgm3500 in the anime all we got was a big smirk from Roswaal when Subaru did his white knight simp speech. must have thought something like: the book was right he is really doing it
@@titanus261 i find that one interesting because technically the only one who died and came back was Priscilla's bodyguard but we the audience don't notice that he also has return by death yet. after finding out and rewatching it it makes waaay more sense why he suddenly backs down on whatever Priscilla says in that. its because she killled him!
@@MultiColt yeah but i mean in concerning his case. If roswall knew about Al he would do everything in his power to force him to come to the Emilia camp and gaslight him until he gave by putting him in an impossible situation like subaru
Subaru knows to call puck when they haven't even met. Subaru knows awful lot about witch cult and their abilities and has random mood swings and mental breakdowns. Not sus at all
I mean, there are people weirder than him everywhere across re zero, and don't forget that roswaal is a respected lord while acting sus 100% of time for a 400 years already lol
@@user-ee7nc8bi4n He's been body hopping so nobody outside of Emilia camp knows the truth about Roswaal, everybody thinks he's just a descendant of Roswaal family so he's not sus.
Also Subaru is the first one to kill and Archbishop in hundreds of years, and he also leads and allows the murder of two Great Mabeasts, so people are more inclined to think that he has been hunting the witch cult for all of his live or that he knows everything about them to exterminate them than to be suspicious about him
@@kazutrash Yeah, a bipolar one. Pretty sure that goes to an even higher level next season (Arc 5). "Hey Julius, I'm a complete novice spirit arts user with a broken gate, but here's one of the most powerful and intelligent beings to ever exist as my contract spirit."
@@Gundam_JAY the part he hugs rem and was about to cry for no reason. If i were rem i would think he wanted to betray Emilia and roswal and everything he said was just so he can run somewhere else. Or maybe even a spy
Just so you know, Roswaal questions him about knowing nothing in the first loop, but in the 4th loop he already knows about Lugunica's problems so Roswaal doesn't question him, and also it's not everyone who can use magic or even knows how it works, even Fortuna who lived for centuries didn't know what a lesser spirit or spirit arts was. So it's normal for Subaru to know nothing about those
I mean, they were like a secluded people in a forest. Betelgues and his men were the only ones who visited them from outside the forest is wha tit sounded like. I mean Julius is like famous for being the spirit arts knight so I’m pretty sure most people know what spirits are.
Also just the fact Subaru was so easily involved with all the important people of the kingdom and just happened to be there at the right time flawlessly for everything that ever occurred to him.
I think it’s cool how in the Wrath if story one of Subaru’s right hand men, Cecilus, noticed how Subaru seemed to know the outcome of every event. He’s one of the only characters besides Roswaal to acknowledge his ability to “see the future”
Not only them, but in Arc 7 Vincent has his suspicions. I’ve heard he apparently set up Subaru so he dies 5 times by Todd in the span of only 5 minutes, testing how good Subaru’s capabilities are. If the rumours Vincent heard were true about Natsuki Subaru, then him escaping would confirm his suspicions, which he just did. Todd is also very afraid of Subaru’s unknown power and is extremely cautious when he tries killing him. And by confirming his suspicions, he would then use and manipulate him to regain Vollachia’s throne.
@@alinastanescu4430 doesn’t stop him from seeing Subaru as an extremely reliable asset. Also i commented on this around when people were speculating that Vincent knew about RbD.
man, no wonder people trust Subaru mostly, the guy seems to literally always have an answer to everything, If i was one of the Lugnica people I would tots want to be bro with him
This video made me think why Rem wasn’t hostile on the loop before he succeed, instead of looking like somebody from the witch cult he looks more like somebody cursed by the witch cult with a huge baggage and terrifying nightmares every night. Looking at it like that it makes sense why they were so friendly to somebody who should be suspicious
@@3dsmaster537 Or, more reasonably so, he was a victim to them, they forcibly put the witch scent on him in hopes of converting him to their cult, but somehow managed to escape them, and now lives with that trauma. The two of them are compassionate enough to feel bad for him when he's in a weak moment, like in the true loop with the lap pillow scene. And that was just them thinking he was pushing himself at work, in the previous loop they would've felt so bad for the boy.
Just to make it extra clear, there was a whole month long time skip between the mabeast incident and the royal selection ceremony, so Rem’s personality change isn’t as abrupt as you make it seem.
Dude you’re right! I even mention that there’s a time skip in the vid but I still act like it was just the next day or whatever...wow I’m kinda dumb on that front lmao. Thanks for pointing that out
@@kazutrash Don’t worry about it, I didn’t know there wss such a long timeskio there before I cought up the the WN and got adventurous enought to explore the treasure trove of information that is Tappei’s QnA’s. There is actually a surprising amount of side stories taking palce during this time skip, even when you exclude the chapters that got adapted into the memory snow OVA. This includes, but is not limited to: Subaru getting mayo withdrawl, Subaru crossdressing, Subaru teaching the maids how to make Latte Art, everyone in the mansion getting introduced to the ”kings game” (wherein you draw lots, and one person gets to be king and order the others around, but the king can only give orders using the numbers everyone else drew, and not using their names to ensure fairness), Subaru ”summoning a ghost” using the techniques of a Japanese teenager (not very effective, right?!), and so on. We also get to see Rem’s casual yandere traits in these side stories (arc 2 doesn’t count since there was no ”dere” going around, just murder), such as trying to spike Subaru’s tea with a drug that makes people more honest, and trying suspiciously hard not to violate him while she’s staring at his sleeping form. Honestly, there’s enough quality content there for an entire video series.
@Hanako XNaya Fans Yes it’s canon. The reason I decided not to talk about it is because we all already know about it. All of the pther stories I talked about are also canon though, in their own way. Rem’s love for Subaru gets expanded upon a lot in the other stories I mentioned. Apparently Rem’s horn starts vibrating in her skull when she’s turned on, neat huh?
something that I think helps to explain why everyone believed in his possession story is the fact that he has the witch's scent. The witch's scent is usually only present on people in the cult, or perhaps more accurately only people with the witch's scent are inducted into the cult. They already know that subaru has the witch's scent thanks to the stunt he pulled with the white whale, and while uncommon, a person having the scent but having no affiliation with the cult isn't something that's entirely unreasonable to my knowledge. Knowing that, it doesn't take that much effort to conceive that the scent is in some way linked with the cult's possession, and that it could still affect you while not being in the cult.
Lmao Beako's table set up looks like she wants to invite Witches to a tea party. Also, Reinhard is a true bro for trying to appeal with Subaru in Crusch's household. He is willing to go there and talk to Subaru despite knowing Wilhelm will also be there. To be acknowledge as a friend by the Sword Saint himself is a feat of its own.
@@plantinapot9169 Puck and Emilia just sort of mention it, and wonder how he came to learn that. I think they decided to get to know him better or something. Just as a side note, later on Emilia would learn that questioning how Subaru learns certain things is pointless, so while she probably hasn’t forgotten, she has probably decided she won’t get any real awnsers out of Subaru.
Subaru must look like a mad genius to everyone around him lol, it's no wonder everyone trusts whatever he says, the fact that he was instrumental in defeating the white whale during the actual battle and not just in the preparations also helps, I know he didn't do any actual damage but he was the one that saw trough the cloning trick, helped boost the soldier's morale, had the idea of traping the white whale with that giant three (on the fly btw) and served as bait during the whole battle (including the aforementioned mentioned trap), no wonder that in one of the what-if stories Crusch loses the battle against the with whale when she doesn't have Subarus help ps: I loved the video, great job man, I also hope you do a video on season two :D
@@kazutrash I am glad to hear part 2 is in the works, and yeah the what if's are really fun (and he loses in most of them lol) just be careful to check if it has spoilers since some what-ifs are from arcs that were not adapted in the anime yet
@@kazutrash Iirc, Oboreru (Wrath), Tsugihagu (gluttony), Rem:IF (Sloth) all contain spoilers for anime-only fans. Mainly characters for wrath and sloth. However, gluttony reveals a lot about... arc 6? I think? I'm probably getting that wrong. Pride, or Ayamatsu's spoilers are negligible. I think. Kasaneru (Greed) takes place right after season 2, so that's a good start. Also, side note. Crusch dies to the whale in both pride, for sure, and wrath... I think.
I always thought that everyone else thinks that Subaru has gone through some horrible shit before he met them, which explains his constant breakdowns. Btw thanks man the video was really helpful
@@kazutrash well, he does spout some sus shit about the cult so people might think he was their victim for a period of time and is now driving to take the cult down. Like the thing where he was susceptible to Geuse's possession and such
I’m a year late, but Rem probably thinks the way you said it. Subaru vaguely describes his past to her during the speech episode about letting his parents down and stuff, but not mentioning his modern times or countries etc.
pretty late reply here, but i believe it was either stated in a qna or somewhere else that a lot of people Subaru is close to believe that he has some sort of connection to the witches, although, of course, they don’t know that he’s literally met and spoken with them before. Also, they often use Subaru’s facial expressions as a way to determine the severity of situations, as from their point of view, he’ll randomly get a super serious or despondent expression when shit’s about to hit the fan
Coming back from the S2 i finally understand 13:14, Subaru first proclaims himself as a knight bc of his “failure” to live up to the title of Natsuki Kenichi’s son so decided to give himself a new one in this new life. He then goes to disrespect the knights by projecting himself onto them, downplaying the importance of a “knight” bc they were simply “born into it”. Subaru was jealous the knights could live up to their “expectations” unlike he was so claims what they were doing wasn’t special.
1:20 wait a damn second... his body was already there?.... that's a good theory. Really good theory. That may also answer why he had a gate, an unused gate.
With all of his lines and mood swings, I feel like anyone intelligent enough would be able to figure out Subaru has some kind of ability that allows him to know future events
Yeah. Especially right in the middle of the strategy meeting to off Petelgeuse, he has some kind of precog reverie, then changes plans on the fly like it's nothing.
I think that works if they are all the time with him, because if you see that once it may look just like a big brain moment, is when you see that literally ever time there is a problem that it becomes apparent
I mean, if you saw someone in real life that all of a sudden had a massive mood swing and went to do something, you wouldn't assume that they had the ability to go back in time right? It's a lot easier for us to say something like this because we're the audience, but from their perspective, Subaru is just some bipolar dude that has a massive brain for some reason.
4:08 In the break time series, it is mentioned in e3. Puck is conversing with Emilia about the events that unfolded during the battle with Elsa, when Puck recalls Subaru calling out for him. When Emilia asked if he knew him, he said no.
Was going to comment this when I decided to look it someone beat me to it. The Re:Zero Shorts series is really great for filling in info from between episodes.
Very well analytical video regarding the true timeline. It's nice to see it all in a chronological sense, considering the many loops and all. Funny to see that from an outsider's perspective he seems like the wisest but weirdest guy that just came out of nowhere.
@@titanus261 There are this "Re:If" series made by the creator which basically is Subaru making decisions he haven't made in the canonical timeline, like running with Rem per example.
@@matheuskirisame yeah i figure that out, but i was wondering something, no 2 things, did subaru see his if while he was at the sanctuary ? And second its my théorie but are the if really non-cannonical? I mean satella is the which of envy, it could be canonical then she came back and change 2 or 3 things so subaru dont go the wrong way
@@titanus261 Probably yes, but we don't have an exaclty answer yet in the novels which are way ahead. If not wrong tho, the anime did show one or two frames of Subaru others timeline and the Rem:If one but idk if it is canon
Here’s a thought. Subaru could probably tell people he has an ability that lets him see possible futures under certain circumstances. It could explain how he’s either completely clueless or knows exactly what’s going to happen
Nah I don't think Satella will allow that, Spoiler Alert At the latest WN chapters, Satella doesn't even let Subaru say to his comrades that they are going to be killed when they go out of the hut. I think it is implied that he can't say anything that indicates he has an ability to see the future.
he can probably easily say that he nows what will happen. Crush could ask him:" Can you see into the future" or smth of those lines and when subaru says no, crush knows he lied because of her divine protection.
I just want to correct one thing, at 18:54 you mention the character at the head of Anastasia's mercenaries being named "Julius". The name of the particular mercenary on screen was "Juli"--Julius is Anastasia's knight, though I definitely understand the confusion as they have a very uncanny resemblance.
For the spawning into the world bit, the manga seems to suggest that Subaru simply forgot how he got there, instead of just appearing. So I would assume he just kinda walked there from wherever he actually came from
Okay since this is getting a lot more traction than I anticipated, lemme make a few things clear! PART 2 got me a copyright strike so I'm trying to resolve that now. Video probably won't be re-uploaded for a while. rip. :/ PART 2 IS BACK UP! PLUS A SANCTUARY EXPLAINED VID! 1) So apparently at 4:55 this IS actually brought up again in the chibi shorts (i haven’t watched those) 2) At 7:30 Roswall does, in fact Question his lack of knowledge in the first loop, but in the successful loop Subaru already knows about Lugunica’s problems so he doesn’t say anything 3) At 4:30, it isn’t actually common knowledge for everyone to know all about magic and Spirits/spirit arts, so it would actually be pretty normal for him to not know. If anything else comes up I’ll put it in the replies, thanks for correcting me guys :)
At 14:18 (and at other parts of the video with similar remarks) I say, “Rem’s 180 degree shines through”, but it isn’t as abrupt as I make it seem, since there is a short time skip between the ulgarm incident and the return to the capital.

Looking forward to Part 2, I've read the WN and there's just so much going on I forget that the actual timeline is a straight path. This makes the straightforward timeline much clearer, even if it's only up to Season 2 potentially.
Ay glad to hear it, and that’s true! Season two has a lot of stuff going down but there’s a lot of flashbacks and stuff, so it shouldn’t be too difficult to make either
No he's got ptsd with a tonne of bad coping mechanisms. Bipolar is completely different they can tell half his happy go lucky antics are just trying to destress himself (he's hypervigilant as fuck). And it's not just to them he literally has it. His sudden abnormal actions don't look like mental illness but something magical. Rem, Beatrice, one of the Lewes clones and more by now have all noticed his miasma/witch scent fluctuations and many assumed there's a connection.
My favourite part of Re:Zero is Subaru's feelings about Otto changing from "that backstabbing coward!" to "you owe me, jerk!" to "oh, I know that guy" and eventually being surprised that Otto, given enough time, is a brave and loyal friend. It's so funny to think that Otto has no idea who this guy is and why Subaru likes him.
I didn't realise just how many life changing speeches the story has.

Shamak isn't just a blinding spell. It messes with senses such as hearing, touch, smell, etc and in general causes someone affected by it to feel disconnected from the space around them by isolating their senses. Yin magic in general seems to be about distorting time and space, whereas Yang magic admittedly can achieve similar results to Yin magic but through different means. Considering Yin and Yang historically represent Chaos and Order, War and Peace, etc, I'll assume that Yang magic reorganizes things while abiding by nature rather than going _against_ and distorting the world like Yin magic seems to do. If my grasp on these concepts are correct or at least close, then Subaru having a Yin affinity is extremely fitting, considering that since his debut in this world he's been screwing with the natural order and flow of the world to thwart fate, change destiny and achieve the otherwise impossible.
18:30 just for correction, Subaru and Július ended up with the conclusion that Betelguese could only posses people with spirit affinity without any contract.

and here the spoiler about return by death: everytime subaru get mortally injured, before he dies, satella picks his soul and bring it to her shadow garden, inside her seal, from there she reads his memory, choose the checkpoint and with the help of shadow magic and nekt spells send subaru actual memory to the subaru of the past, in a similar way in which a gospel convey info from the future of the owner to the past self owner. so its not time travel nor dimensional travel. its just high class stylish magic. this not only allows him to change the bad future before it happens but also force into him the trauma resulted by said futures.

@@tescobakery1927 I never implied that. This is all in the main route. Subaru had just gotten his stomach slashed open, and was healing in the mansion. In the chibi shorts Emilia and Puck acknowledged on how Subaru already knew pucks name, but they just said yeah it's suspicious, but they don't think he's a bad guy. - Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Break Time Episode 3
Having read the LNs, I know pacts with spirits are different for each one, except the lesser ones who usually all tend to be "talk to them every X days" so it shouldn't be public knowledge when Puck goes to sleep.
Dude just imagined you saw Julios beat someone who trashed talked the knights and the next day that guy is taking down the white whale and the witche's cult

So only addressing this because it comes up a lot: @7:30 "Nobody ever questions why he knows like, nothing about this world, lol" Subaru was already established to not be from Lugnica, where magic is the most commonplace, so his total ignorance of magic should be totally understandable to the magical half-elf girl and her magic spirit that live in the most powerful and educated magician in the world's house. They basically write off all the weird and foreign things Subaru does as him being a foreigner who may even be from beyond the Great Waterfall

it's thanks to this video that I got into re:zero, I love watching these kind of videos that rearrange events to give you a different perspective (removing or adding internal monologue, changing the order of scene to match a character's perspective or the world's chronology in time travel stories or stories that do not show events linearly, putting side by side scenes that are supposed to happen at the same time, etc), when I saw that thumbnail I was like "hey, isn't that that one time travel anime I watched a parody of years ago" and I clicked it, soon after finishing the video, I managed to find an actual edit of the anime following the same idea and it was awesome.
