Ashford and Simpson performing their classic hit " Reach and Touch Somebody's Hand " with their friends Ben E. King, Roberta Flack, Phyllis Hyman, Cissy Houston, Paul Shaffer, Stevie Wonder, and Patti LaBelle.
Reberta Flack sounds just like her albums... incredible. Patti and Nick does it for me absolutely 🎉❗ fantastic performance from them all but Mrs. Holt stole the show!!!
The way Cissy started was just so classy. She commanded attention from that first soprano entry.Haha I love the way Cissy slapped Patti. Patti's chest is off the chain.
Patti is the best with High notes, and black people tend to love that, shes a legend. BUT listen to Phyllis Hyman phrasing and artistry and how she takes those words and break them down. thats SINGING!!!
Very very gracious of nick and Valery Simpson to allow all those great top singers and fellow songwriters to perform this legendary classic song of theirs with them on stage.
All they needed to bring the house down was Ms. Patti Labelle, no offense to the other legends on stage, but Ms. Patti Patti gives it her all no matter what😉👌🏿
The only reason I listen to this live performance is because of Phyllis Hyman. She and her voice touched my soul. She reached out and touched my hand. Her phrasing, her tone, her gestures on stage. That's it-- I've decided! She is my number one most favourite vocalist of all time.
Listen...I'm gonna be 47 this year and STILL single because I ain't getting married til I find what Nick & Val had. Real talk. Them two LOVED each other.
@ 1:54 then and there you knew Nick Ashford was a Patti LaBelle fan and has studied her mannerism and technique with that note and bend! Lmaooo Go On Nick!! #reeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaach!
@@derrickbrown261 That's incorrect. Nick is older but Patti was professionally recording before he and Val became successful writers/singers. That was definitely her mic and mannerisms when she holds her notes lol it's not a bad thing.
Phyllis buttery tone, cissy super soprano, Stevie wonder ran for his life! In a good way, Patti is ridiculous with godly range. Nick and Valerie opened it up nice👏🏾
Every one of these immensely talented artists kill... but for me, Roberta & Phyllis are the reason this clip is so essential. Roberta has a voice soft as butter, but make no mistake - that voice commands your attention and respect. Phyllis... what can I say that hasn't already been put into words? You were robbed! You haven't gotten the level of success your true talent deserved! The very second you start to sing... you command my attention! Girl... you could sing like none other. My only regret was being introduced to you after you were gone. You have my love & respect. Peace.
Patti is literally the only singer i know that can oversing and sing out of melody and get away with it. There's something about her! She sings like its her life! Not caring about how people think or how she looks. I believe its honesty..i think thats how she is able to hit those notes.. she channel her inner self outward not inward
I've never seen the legendary Ashford and Simpson in concert, thank God I was able to see the late great Phyllis Hyman in concert. I've got to get to New York to see the legendary Valerie, the great love of Nick's life. Pray for Valerie because today 8/26/11 is her birthday and I'm sure it's not easy after celebrating almost 50 years with her husband. It's good to know that God will be her comfort and strength, not just today but for the rest of her life.
The True Beauty Was All The Music Ashford And Simpson Has Written for all those Singers on Stage... That Was So Beautiful it's like Dying and Coming Back... All Those Artist Music Has Healed My Generation and My Moms Generation Somehow... ALL Their Voices Is And Was Priceless... What A treat to have all that Talent and Wonder in One Room but that's what Ashford and Simpson brought out everytime they appeared. The True Talent Showed up and Showed Out. Amen... RIP #Salute Those who aren't with us anymore but always there in our Hearts.
Ms. Patti Patti didn't come to play with y'all on that stage! She said why show up if you are not going to show out. Lol!! Mama PH can break down a song so that you feel her in your soul! RIP babe! Ashford and Simpson are so damn talented! Ugh! Could you imagine if Aretha was up there? Really though the only one missing, for me anyway, is The Voice. I sooo wish she was there. Well at least her mom was up there on stage. Would someone please tell me which show was this and are there other clips from this show???
😂😂😂😂 Now you Know you can not give Patti LaBelle a microphone and expect anything less than pure power😂😂😂 she will be heard and being a vocal beast, she will naturally blow the stage up😂😂😂
This so reflects me on live, that in life there is time for everything and that we are all time bound.. Here I see Cissy still strong and profound but now she has really aged and weakened no more of these joyful moments.. The Simpsons the love and bond they had that now it is broken and irreparable. Life is really a ball that keeps turning!
Growing up in Louisiana in the 70's, this song was always the closing song of choice, to end Sunday Service. Great childhood memories to this song. Thanks Nick, Valerie, and Diana for this wonderful song.
Wow.. This was a wonderful performance.. Like such performances where there is no prior rehearsals but just talent defends .. Like the way Cissy , patti and Steve plus the others drove it
I remember this too when it was on TV. I can watch this all day. I also love watching the reactions of these GIANTS when Patti goes on that riff. Priceless!!!!
This was during the Ashford & Simpson: Going Home Special which aired on Disney Channel on August 27, 1988. It included other guests including Nick Ashford, Valerie Simpson, Roberta Flack, Ben E. King, Paul Schaffer, Cissy Houston, Phyllis Hyman and Special Guest Stevie Wonder.
love R&B lovesongs from 1976 to1996: O'jays, Teddy Pendergrass, Rolls Royce, Ohio Players, Micheal Henderson, Commodores, The Manhattan's, Teena Marie, Boyz to Men, Ashford and Simpson, Barry White, etc. for the next 7hours
This is simply amazing!!! These artists truly represent the Golden Age of music which is sadly a bygone era. How many singers today (or rather, pseudo singers) are able to even carry a melody decently, let alone possess the musical capacity to improvise like what these great singers have done here? Fortunately, there are many gems like this that have been documented to serve as a window into the lost era where individuality, diversity and creativity existed.
