if you think that girl was trying to atone, you've already fallen for the trap, which is the beauty of the whole interaction in the first place

The demon girl wasn't trying to atone. She kept feeling threatened by the parents of the girl she ate. She thought killing the chief and using his daughter to replace the girl she ate would stop them from killing her eventually

Something that kind of came to mind for me: She keeps using the "Mom" thing. I'd not be surprised whatsoever if she didn't pull basically that exact same routine before.

This is correct, and it is presented in a way to trick you into feeling some type of empathy, that you should not feel, sort of like Himmel did earlier.
@Nevri.
@Nevri. Год назад
Also it's important to realize what a "living in peace" means to a demon. Since they don't see anything wrong with killing humans, even if they attempt to just "live in peace" it doesn't mean she wouldn't kill someone again sooner or later. Also all her living with them would teach her how to act more human and get better at lying and hiding when she does kill someone. So yea, there's no winning over demons. They lack empathy necessary to create bonds.

@@Nevri. I agree, and I love that representation of demons. You could say that they aren't necessarily evil in the same way humans are, it's just their nature to be that way.

The problem is that the demon child had no problem killing the man who saved her und who she lived with for a while, meaning that if diplomacy was possible it would always involve a huge risk and be honestly not worth it

Humans acquired language in order to communicate with their own kind However, the demon race acquired language in order to imitate humans and prey on them in this show Just a creature like a Wild beast not evil
@rektifyr...
@rektifyr... Год назад
Humans acquired language to communicate but are capable of using it to prey on others. Demons acquired it to prey on humans but are capable of using it to communicate with each other, as we see in the episode. I don't see how the origins of their ability to speak is at all relevant to whether they can communicate, in fact, predation was one of the main evolutionary driving forces for intelligence. If the show doesn't go any deeper than "demons bad" I'll be very disappointed. If they wanted to portray the demons as solely using language to lure in humans, they shouldn't have shown them talking to each other when there were no humans around.
@repli2991
@repli2991 Год назад
@@rektifyr... I mean, how else would he explain his evil plan to his subordinate (Who's already supposed to know it) so we know what they're up to? Jokes aside, I get your point tho, they're clearly capable of communication (As in, relaying information), they just don't seem to understand human feelings, I think however this is mostly to serve as a parallel to Frieren, who's trying to do exactly that (As well as her own feelings), although it would be cool if they delve deeper than that, I think it could be too much of a "Thematic sidequest", for lack of a better term.
@Ale-nv2bo
@Ale-nv2bo Год назад
@@rektifyr... No, this depiction was actually deep, they depicted demons as ACTUAL demons. You just want another "racism bad" story. It's brilliant, the perfect evolutionary step for demons, like an ant-mimicking spider. Good and evil are HUMAN concepts, we tend to try to humanize everything because our minds can't process the existence of something that's not bound by feelings like us. Frieren is right they are just animals basically they aren't good or bad, they are apex predators and humans just so happen to be their prey, so refreshing.
@rektifyr...
@rektifyr... Год назад
@@repli2991 Right, I didn't really consider them as a foil to Frieren. I still think it'd be detrimental to the world building, but at least there's a point to it.

@@rektifyr...well sorry to burst your bubble but they are never shown in any way other than being bad, they are complex and fascinating creatures and them being irredeemable from birth is what makes them interesting forcing this idea of good being in everything is human and not to their nature their distinct violation of this seeming idea for humans as to their steadfast evil to humans pov is what is so co.plex and interesting about them, not everything needs to be redeemable dude. And also language is simply mainly a tool for them to lure, with extra benefits of being able to coordination together sometimes to survive that's all it is to them. Also I know this because I'm a manga reader I have read through all 120 chapters

Bro, we can assume there already was a demon society. There was a Demon KING and 7 "generals" with "minions" under them. They already organized and Himmel clapped them 80 years ago. Fern said Aura regained power 28 year ago, and they still fighting humans... seems they didn't learn their lesson

They are simply predators who consider humans their prey. Consider the corpse-weaver from made in abyss. Essentially an evolved form of those creatures, capable instead of merely calling for help, of saying exactly what's necessary to deceive their prey. They're very intelligent, but utterly incompatible with other sentient species

I would say that it is refreshing for once that the demon are not the "poor not understand race" haha
@archinotee52
@archinotee52 Год назад
Considering that, to demons, humans are perceived as an entirely distinct species. The term 'racism' is not quite fitting in this context, as it's not analogous to how humans treat animals like chickens or cows. Demons, in a similar way, may view humans as mere cattle or a source of sustenance, making it justifiable for them to regard humans as inferior. However, if the assumed all demon is inherently psychopathic or wired to lack empathy, your theory seems plausible. They might establish a hierarchy based on a power-level system. Additionally, it can be argued that they form communities to counter the threat posed by humans. Individualistic survival is deemed impractical since humans can more easily hunt them down, underscoring the importance of a robust communal structure.
@mr.brazilian5167
@mr.brazilian5167 9 месяцев назад
Yes actually this is the explanation given as why they now sometimes work in groups, as there is no benefit in killing another of its kind as there is no body left to eat when they die and cause their prey has alot in numbers and has powerful communities, now by nature their society only is stable if their is a great enough threat to oppose them, if there is like a few examples shown later in the manga they simply disperse and try to survive alone again

I really liked this episode and how it setup the demons. The way it gives you some hope that there's a chance of change for the demons and the general vibe with the young girl demon that makes you wonder if she's trying to right a wrong in a really bad way only for her to confirm herself that she was merely tricking the humans and trying to prolong her own life to better prey on them. I originally fell for her actions too when it first watched this episode. I also really liked how you really went into the whole morale dilemma. (taking child hostage was best for survival, not a monster move, I agree.) Even if you were on copeium for a large portion of your post reaction talk, you aren't crazy. The way these demons are written successfully takes advantage of your empathy in the same way they are manipulative to the humans in the show.
@mr.brazilian5167
@mr.brazilian5167 9 месяцев назад
No it doesn't give any hope and it actually is all made to directly stop you from thinking this, they don't have the same thought process of living in peace with us or think in the same way as us, you make points that force human characteristics to a beast that evolved to hunt us through mimicking us, and even if one is raised in a human environment from inception spoilers for later in the manga as this is explored, you wanna know what happens? They destroy an entire city, thousands dead and the demon still is clueless to what it did wrong by doing this. Demons in this series are not human in any way other than in the fact they are able to feel pride, curiosity, and fear, that's all we share with them. There is no peace with then as their version of peace is simply not being hunted down by us and surviving by dominating others, and eating humans is such a natural thing to do, like mimicking us, that it is akin to you not questioning why you breath, you simply just do this, abd not questioning why you need to eat, it is a basic function of their nature there is no evil in them just survival.

The joke with Fern earlier, is that Stark wants her to use a friendly honorific with her like -kun or even -san, instead of the overly formal -sama. Instead she drops honorifics entirely when Stark asks her to stop using -sama, which is considered incredibly rude outside of close family/friends

It might be possible to rehabilitate demons like you would domesticate a wild fox. You can't really, maybe after centuries of domestication you can but even if you teach them to be non hostile it'll be like teaching a dog to hand shake, dogs don't understand the concept of agreement and respect to know what a handshake means, all they know is that they get a treat from it. If so, if we can provide the demons some fopd that they desire more than human flesh then just maybe they would assess that collaborating with the humans is much more beneficial than attacking them, leading them to be the most agreeable subordinates we could possibly have, since they'll do anything to please or trick the humans to give them this new food they desire.

I mean there is a example of this in the manga later on where they try to at least get a demon to be able to live in society and understand us but it all ends with the entire city being destroyed and thousands if people dead by its hands, its very nature is to destroy us there is no more nuance past that simple concept, which is why they are so strange and interesting

Another difference I find interesting between humans and demons is the way in which they pass away. Humans die and their corpse is left behind (as shown with Himmel's death) while when a demon dies (as shown with the demon girl) they dissipate much like monsters do. Which makes me wonder on the concept of the monsters dissipating in the first place; is it something inherent to monsters? Why do monsters dissipate? What classifies as a monster? We've seen peaceful fantasy creatures, if one of these was killed would they dissipate as monsters do? If we go with the standard fantasy RPG concept of monsters, they're evil and must be purged. But how does that apply after generations of monsters breeding? It's stated in this episode demons are descendants of monsters, so how does an 'evil monster' cope with logical thinking and a sapient brain? This show is extremely smart by taking typical yet unnatural occurrences in fantasy media and questioning how and why things are the way they are. How is the Demon King evil if they're a king? How are unintelligent monsters evil for killing humans? Are demons and monsters evil merely because of our human perspective? It portrays the typical "demons are just the same as us" by making the demons literally not the same as us. By making them literal monsters.
@mr.brazilian5167
@mr.brazilian5167 9 месяцев назад
There is no fancy contradictions in thus though, they don't need to cope with being intelligent and eating other creatures because they don't feel empathy literally biologically they don't feel love, empathy, or sadness, they can feel happiness to a very small and more muted degree and anger as it is a useful evolutionary trait found in most animals anyway, abd pride which acts as a main drive to allow them to even have a society at all as it is based on domination not cooperation. And curiosity which let's them learn quickly and be more inclined to advanced which let's them thrive more, as shown with later on in the manga they are inherited not complex in the way of them ever having the possibility of being good, they are not evil, as they cannot truly feel malice but they are simply out for survival they are like a tiger or another wild untamed animal that just happens to be intelligent. Look at chimps and see their violent tendencies, they can at least feel things like empathy and some can be good because they are social creatures but demons are not.
