This trade is actually a great deal. We free up $7MM in cap space, which gives us more flexibility. The Wolves are already a second apron team, so they're facing heavy tax penalties and restrictions on trades, signings, and draft picks. With the new $76 billion TV deal kicking in soon, the salary cap will rise significantly. This means we can offer Wemby a supermax deal, potentially exceeding $400 million by the end of the decade, ensuring he stays with us long-term. Unprotected picks from a financially troubled team like the Wolves are incredibly valuable. If their situation worsens, those picks could be high-value assets. Plus, unprotected picks are enticing trade chips if we decide to pursue an established star in the future. This trade sets us up nicely for both immediate flexibility and long-term potential.

They did not trade Dillingham geesh. They traded the pick! The wolves selected Dillingham. Dillingham would not be the spurs pick if they were picking. Dillingham was not a spurs pick...and thus was not traded. It stupid how the NBA does draft trades. Should do it like the NFL and let the next team make the pick.

If Wemby is fantastic, you cannot win alone but you need a competitive team to run until the title. Don't think that Wemby is not aware of this. He is very smart. He wants to win but as Sochan was telling in a recent interview, Spurs' fans need to be patient. At best, Spurs will be a contender team in three or four years from now. The 8th pick trade is a smart move from the Spurs to still accumulate assets for future use (whatever the use...).

Why trade Dillingham? It can only be because he does not fit the architecture of the team they are trying to build. It doesn't mean that Rob is not a great player who can make an impact, it just means that he doesn't fit into the Spurs' plans for their team. We just have to wait and see what the architecture looks like as they build it. My guess - They definitely need good shooting, but I think they also want longer players who can defend multiple positions (kinda like Derrick White).

Feel so sorry for Wemby. I thought he lucked into an organization that built championships around Duncan, but that was a long time ago. Other than getting lucky with the draft in 2023, this FO has done nothing worthwhile. Now this franchise cannot afford to pay a second 1st round pick despite having possibly the lowest salary total in the league. Even worse they have fans that can't see that trading a #8 pick for an unknown swap and pick 7 years away is like giving it away for nothing. If you want to give me $22 now so that 7 years later I can give you some random amount between $1 and $30, then I would love to do business with you every day. OKC was the youngest team ever to win a playoff series last year, and they decided to take a chance at Topic. Given the GM's track record of drafting Durant, Westbrook, Harden etc, if I was the Spurs I would have taken Topic and waited for a year. That would have justified a tank. Castle could be developed as a guard who could play with a 1 or 2. Wemby is likely to go to a better team after the rookie contract is over. The opportunities to make outside money in NY or LA will outweigh any loss on the NBA contract.

I mean I don't dislike Castle, but the Spurs' roster construction makes little sense at this point. Castle, Sochan, Jones, Johnson, Sissoko, Branham, Wesley, how many NON SHOOTERS do you **ing need in a team???? And at 8 you still had good shooters available, but no better sell the pick for "assets" that won't help your team develop. I fully expect the Spurs to do little to nothing in the offseason and just run it back. Tanking is annoying, but you also need proper roster construction for guys to develop. All our players except Vassell are less than league average shooters!!!! Wemby needs spacing ffs!!!!

Wemby was unanimous number one pick, other than that, the spurs have been below average in the draft for a while now. They used to do so much more with the picks. Cant believe they wont use the number 8 pick. Not a good pick. Spurs number one priority is to develop an all star caliber player next to Wemby. As of right now, Sochan, Vassell or Keldon ar not all star caliber players... It was a better idea to take a gamble with the 8 pick.... look for international talent

The Spurs are thinking long time - they always have. After maybe this year, they aren't going to have too many high draft picks. They basically turned a position they really don't need into possibly high draft picks ONLY five years from now. Wemby is 25 in 30/1. What's the problem? You're going to need to bring in talent throughout Wemby's career with the Spurs. Dillingham may be great one day - HE MAY NOT. People are too focused on today, and not tomorrow.

3 problems that the Spurs have: Defense, shooting, depth. Stephon Castle answers all of them. Rob Dillingham only one. I'm sure they would have picked Clingan or Salaun if they were available. They would have answered all three needs as well. But they weren't.As much as I hate to say it, this was a good trade... depending what they do with it, it could be a GREAT trade! (BTW, the Spurs traded the pick first, then drafted the player that Minnesota asked them to draft. Last point: future draft picks are icing on a trade cake. They make for a sweeter deal.

The more I think about it the less I like it. I feel like drafting two pgs with different skill sets is really smart. You mitigate the risk two-fold of missing on your draft pick. Even if you hit on both than you can trade one and is a really good asset. Maybe I’m just disappointed cause I was expecting exiting with two prospects. Especially when you draft players who strengths are the other players weaknesses and vice versa. That interoperability is really useful and rare I think Unless we use those twolves picks to trade for someone soonish then maybe I’ll change my mind

There is no justification for the trade of Dillingham, what team would trade the 8th overall pick for a few picks 6 and 7 years out? Wright and Pop will more than likely not be part of the team. I don't understand how these picks help set up any other trades or how we can improve this current team. This is for the Poetle trade and he will probably be retired in 6-7 years. I can make any sense as to why an organization would make a move like that - does not help the current team in any way and the picks are probably so far out that it could not possibly help in any trades that would help the current roster..

@user-ln2ep3io2f Thats wrong. Their average age is 23 bud. Victor will be 26/27 when the picks convey. Just entering his prime. Funnily enough your point applies to the Timberwolves. Gobert (who they traded their entire future for) & Kat will be 35~ & on their way out of the league. & unlike us they have almost no draft capital. Nor do they have a front office with the foresight to remain a contender for decades.
@Fawnswine
@Fawnswine 3 дня назад
It helps the Spurs in a way you can bring another Star without giving up the 2025 or 2026 Picks. Spurs can make a trade giving up their 2027, 2029, and 2031 own 1st plus that 3030 pick swap and 3031 unprotected pick in the Timberwolves deal for a trade and that should be enough to make a deal happen.
@Yahurr
@Yahurr 3 дня назад
@user-ln2ep3io2f That being said I doubt we hang on to those picks until 2030/2031. They'll be used as trade fodder, allowing us aquire a star via trade while keeping the Atlantas FRP's so that we can aquire talent on our timeline.

I think the Spurs can restore DGs all-nba potential. Darius can be an efficient 45/40/90 23 ppg scorer with 10 assists. You would really rather have Klay, PG13, or Tobias Harris than DG or Trae. At least DG and Trae are young, and these are the Spurs only options. Darius is a 24 year old all-nba caliber player who was in a bad situation with Dmitch. Imagine how unstoppable DG would be throwing lobs to Wemby and then also doing floaters that look like they could be lobs because his floaters and lobs look the same. If you watched Darius Garland in his All star season when he didn’t share the point Guard role he looked like a top 20 player at 22. Darius Garland is in no way trash. Getting Lauri would also be cool but the Spurs need a point guard
