Its not just fighting. Its ALL sports that require agility. For every pro athlete that is productive until 40, there are 5 who were just as good at 30, but fell off due to injuries/slowing down.

I always thought the stat wasn't that surprising or interesting. Everyone (should) knows there are prime years, and after that, there's usually a steep decline in fighting. 35 seems like an old enough age for that to be reasonable intuitively, even khabib was saying this years ago for fighting at lightweight

His fear and obsession of "curses" is so extreme that it lends credibility to the idea of a curse. I think we know it's not a real curse, but it's a mathematical curse for sure. I predict that someday Luke revises some of his beliefs. Eventually he'll find out that there are real curses--they are real. We live in Conscious Construct built from thought; of course there are curses.

I feel like the age thing is not exactly like a ticking time bomb that goes off right at 35, I mean he's gonna slowly lose his athletic abilities with someone as athletic as Alex I think its gonna take a couple more years maybe when he turns 36 or 37? I just don't think he's gonna suddenly look slow when less than a year ago when he fought Yair he looked really fast and sharp

I don't look or mentally feel my age but when I hit 36 (I can't believe I'm 36) been around the MMA world for close to 20 years😱 anyway, point being my body isn't the same, ankle injuries I had flare up and my hip injury aches. I didn't believe in that until it got me lol... mentally I don't feel I've aged much in a decade 😂

@@Ar1AnX1x Yeah Alex worked with more muscle mass too for a lot of his time in sport. He fights like a flyweight and hits like a welterweight. He is a different breed but those old injuries might play up on him more now. I know!! I was rooting for him. I was bitter for a while with the Max win as I was too emotionally invested in Max Holloway so it's rough to see him lose...

I have been pointing out that Gaethje is also 35, and people seem to be completely ignoring his age. Max is in his absolute mental, physical prime, at 32 years old. A man at 32, is in his absolute fight prime. At 35, Gaethje is ready for a sharp decline, and it could happen against Max. Max is made from solid iron, and it hurts to punch him, it's tough to see Gaethje making it all 5 rounds without getting tired.

Of all of the feather weight title fights the younger guy has won 16 out of 22 times, so 6 times the older fighter won, and 5 of those 6 older fights were won by Volk, So Volk has been beating the odds all along..

If Valentina Shevchenko was 34/35 years of age when she lost, or even the fight where she drew, against Alexa Grasso. Then, in my humble opinion, that right there is the BEST example of this stat, and I kinda worry if Volk can defend the featherweight title this time!

I know this stat only applies to UFC fighters but outside of that Mighty Mouse is a great example of an outlier. He actually defied two heavily pedalled stats. The fighters over age 35 and also the older fighter in a rematch where they lost the previous one stat.

It’s also going to be interesting to see what happens in the grappling. Perhaps volk lost a bit of a step since he fought yair and looked incredible, we’ll see. Maybe volk comes out and tries to weigh on ilia against the cage.. get him down and get him tired and take some pop off of Ilia’s strikes. Then once ilia is a bit tired, volk being even a fraction of a percent slower due to age may not be as big of a factor.

So the actual record is: 1-21 for men 35+ against younger opponents (125-170lbs) 1-10-1 for women It was never 2-28 (for men, combined, or anything) My video and the Twitter account/thread Luke mentioned show each instance a 35+ fighter fought for a title

Even as a "demarcation line" the hard stat has softened as time and thorough research has passed. There are enough exceptions It's proof you can make any stat sound absolute given the proper wording.

i don't count the women's side for the statistic because from what i've seen they're closer to the 185+ divisions in that stat where the best fighters have been so much better than the competition that they've been able to last well past 35 at least at 125-135.

People don't realize that these stats are real but for someone as Alex who is technical and has lightning speed already at this age, his decline may happen later on. If he has recovered as good as Perera did after the Adesanya loss in such a short time, Alex got this.

Luke, do you even read comments?, I don't know if we post and you don't even care to recieve the feedback, brother. But you forgot to mention the most important factor that makes this stat a 'thing': The speed and reaction time is lost with age, and on the male weight classes from 155 and below, the lighter the division, the more is the decrease in performances cause with age the first things to go are the speed and reaction time, specially with all the damage the fighter takes (for instance Shevchenko has not taken any damage in her long career, like at all, and she's only had a serious injury ever; so that's why she's still in her prime to this day; plus, wmma certainly allows less error margent when it comes to reaction time and speed)

Volk is acutely aware that he only has another year or two at elite level in FW...where speed, reaction time, reflexes are crucial...before you could expect some deterioration to take place. But it won't be falling off a cliff. It will just be a percentage point here or there in a slow decline. There's no avoiding it. But often there is only a percentage point or two differentiating the elite fighters in a division. And maybe Volk is dominant enough to absorb a point or two loss and prolong his career. But, currently, there is absolutely no sign of that loss.

And yet, a few months prior to turning 35, Volk demolished Yair (who many said would be his most significant test) and was ranked number 1 P4P. He’s also never lost at featherweight. In championship fights in the featherweight division, the older fighters have a losing record of 6/15…and Volk has 5 of those 6 wins. Im not saying the 35 and over stat isn’t compelling, but it doesn’t tell the entire story.

If we discount Woodley-Till, things look even more grim for Volk. But I just cant overlook what hes done at 145, and to whom. I havent notice any signs of deterioration, quite the opposite, I felt his last defence was really impressive. So, as long as theres no carryover from the Islam KO, I've got Volk winning this one. STATS BE DAMNED! "Lies, damned lies, ..." - you're a smart fella, you know the rest.

Stats are NEVER about one or two people. They deal with a sizeable aggregate of people, events, phenomena, etc. Alex being over 35 and going on to beating Ilia DOES NOT disprove the fact that only in 3 or 4 times, in 32 to 33 championship fights, from 125 to 170 ... including both males and females. But if you included only males ----- who are much competitive, because while the ENTIRE UFC number of 115, 125, and 135 may be 4 to 10 good fighters, in guys, from 125 to 170 ----- it is EXTREMELY hard to get to Top 15, because even outside of Top 15 are all extremely good fighters. That means by the time a guy has arisen to a championship fight, in his prime, against a champ who is 35 or older, it is EXTREMELY DIFFICULT for the older champ to retain the belt. That's what the STATS say, on average: they don't say WHO, individually, is going to or not going to win or lose. In other words: if you had bet, RANDOMLY, on all of the last 32 - 34 championship fights, from 125 to 170 (let's just do the guys, for this purpose), GOING AGAINST THE OLDER GUY, you would have gotten around 30 or so correct. The reason MOST well run CASINOS are glittering with "gold" is because they use world class STATISTICIANS BETTING MODELING. They don't use "I have a feeling my guy's gonna beat the odds"... Saying "I have feeling my guy's gonna beat the odds" is EXACTLY like "I have a dream I won the Lottery... " Nothing wrong with playing the Lottery or betting on underdogs... as long as you KNOW THE STATISTICS in advance... $20 for 10 tickets on the Powerball Lottery having one chance in 290,000,000 "isn't that bad, if you only play once in a while, when the Lottery prize is $500M or $1.5B. You just can't sink 90% of your weekly paycheck on the SuperBall Lottery, thinking $500 to $2,000 a week is going to make your 1 in 290M chances any better.... it does not. Sure, if you had $50M to sink into the Super Ball Lottery every time you play, then, yes, you have a VERY SUBSTANTIAL probability of winning it... whether it is $20M, $40M, $500M, or $1.5B.... but if you had $50M to start with, on any play..... why would you play a game that has only 1/6 or 1/8 probability of winning?
