If you accept him for what he is- a product influencer- then his vids can be useful. I've never found his personal discography very engaging because it doesn't feel like there's anything there, no soul to it, just technical proficiency and finding use cases for products. Some of his Suture Sound stuff manages to let more earnest emotion creep in.

Huang is a self-proclaimed entry-level creator. Mocking him is like turning on Sesame Street as an adult and mocking the characters because you already know how to count and spell. It's not meant for you. I learned some basics from him and don't watch him anymore. I think, relative to other creators who make comperable content to his, he's pretty fair, genuinely knowledgeable, and transparent. I watched the top 10 plug-in video which is featured in this video and I don't think I downloaded anything out of it, but I also recognize that it wasn't meant for me and it saddens me to see a Creator watch a video like this with the express intention of searching for things to disagree with. It's just a very hostile, borderline antisocial way of engaging with his videos. Like he's really grasping for straws whining about affiliate links. It saddens me because I really agree with a lot of these types of creators who are pushing against the commercialized music production industry but I find them to all have this unproductive pessimistic tone like in this video where it's just trashing on other creators but not offering any feasible solutions or alternatives. Like, I think that one knob plugins are bad for people who are learning these are production because they do not actually teach the skills and instead just offer a product which negates the ability to learn the actual Theory. But instead of actually taking a moment to fully explain what these plugins do, how they might be oversold or which other skills or effects could be used in their place, this guy among many many other creators just insult the creator in question? It's all built upon the logical fallacy of "brutal honesty". That's not an actual official logical fallacy but it's something that I've written about before, and it's rhetorically similar to the argument of "dark humor". Creators this lean into this assumption that just because they're being rude, it means they're somehow being more objective or honest than if they were to be polite. I think it's really cool that Andrew Huang included his own plug-in and made sure to disclaim that it was his own plug-in and actually took the time to explain in his video how each of the plugins work. This creator's response to that was to say that's "shitty" of him to include his own plug in his own video even though it's heavily disclaimed. Why? Imagine me sitting here criticizing, "Why are you posting your own videos on your own RU-vid channel... Like... so desperate for attention like why do you want people to watch your videos so badly? If your videos are really that good then why don't other people post them?" It's a lot easier and less vulnerable to just be rude for no reason (aka bullying) when you can hide behind the excuse of "I'm just speaking the truth" etc. This guy is ultimately trying to make money off of trends, too. Offering to shave your eyebrows off as a reward for a subscriber goal is... embarrassing. Basically just admitting he has nothing left to offer other than to make a fool of himself, move further away from making real content of quality, towards devolving into yet another righteous-bullying channel. It's what all creators are doing nowadays once they run out of ideas. Just make videos that are stream highlights where you watch videos of other creators and point and laugh and make fun of them for a living. Instead of making his own videos about his own advice and tips about music creation, he's going for the low hanging fruit by just being mean to other creators who are out there working and making original content to say "look I'm better! At least I don't make that!". The irony that he's riding the largest media trend by making "righteous bullying" content while trying to posture like others are the culprits of cashing out on trends. He's SO not like the other girls that he's not even like the other girls who are not like the other girls.

@@shummersExactly my thought. The only thing I’ll add is that as an end user, viewer, casual producer, it’s all information. There’s the good, the bad, and the ugly, and there is information in all of it. The truth is always in between. I value both approaches and the justice is the growth of the channels, the community around them, and the companies choosing who to work with. Huangs whole world is music and plugins, weavers whole world is criticism and apathy. I have moods that appreciate either.
@jamescarlsmith710

@@shummersWeaver is criticising Andrew including his own plugin because it's a list of Andrew's Best of the Year. It's a bit egotistical to include your own plugin in a list of what you consider to be the best. It's unnecessary and just serves as another place in which to advertise something. Change the topic to best producers of 2023 and imagine Andrew listing himself as one of the best - there's nothing inherently wrong with that, but for people that dislike shill/business focused and/or constant self-promoting behaviour on their media its a major turn off. That's the perspective I think needs to be taken for this situation. I do agree that Weaver is a bit overly negative sometimes and that he uses "honesty" or "authenticy" as a cope for it. But his content personality is his, in the same way as Andrew's is uniquely his. Maybe stop typing university papers in RU-vid and just make some music bro, it's really fun, trust me. I look forward to reading your next thesis on 2 hours. Happy typing❤

Honestly I think there's a really interesting valley between the perspectives between someone like Andrew and someone like Weaver's perspectives which explains a lot about their hugely different takes, that being genre. Weaver is more hip-hop and adjacent genres focused and Andrew is more into very sound design oriented electronic music (among other things). (also Prepare for a Ted Talk lmao, it's important tho trust me) People who are more on the deep electronic side of things often have a lot more interest in deep sound design possibilities, really crafting your sounds to be how you wish. Further, with this kinda music, a lot of the aesthetics come from the sound of "synthesized" instruments, drums and synth patches, and all of the interesting unique stuff you can do when you approach things that way. As such more "raw" or "digital" sounds, such as more synth-y sounding drums or less ultra polished or complex synth patches are more accepted and appreciated. This is literally what the music was born out of anyways. If you make beats, the approach is different, there just isn't that same focus on sound design. Tell a guy making a trap beat to synthesize their own drums and you'll probably sound like you're coming out of left field. For instance, I never heard of either Thump One or 7DS and got quite excited as that shit is just really cool to me, I love being able to sculpt drum and percussion manually and really tailor them, but you can tell that without some good post processing they sound like "synthesized drums", and If you're a beatmaker type of guy you probably just want the drums to sound good and professional, and the sound of synth-ish drums is not really the vibe most of the time, so it just looks like more effort than it's worth. This also explains the difference in value between Andrew and Weaver around Synplant vs Current. Synplant is a bit more unique and out-of-the-box thinking, but frankly the synth engine is less modern, more digital and less polished, it's essentially a relatively simple subtractive and FM synth, but a damn unique one, there's just more value for unique creative sound design shit. If I wanted to be critical I'd say Weaver's kind of just kinda not seeing all the possibilities here and concluding it's all pointless, it's like a blind spot. If it doesn't sound like a modern hella polished and familiar kind of sound, or if it's too digital, it's just bad type of attitude. Current is a essentially a modern polished Wavetable synth i.e. Serum or Vital, and you will get more polished sounds from it out the gate. Weaver's main comment is even that the presets were great sounding. Look at the rest of the things, the "How would you use that, this is a gimmick/not something people will actually use, it's not that good in practice, it sounds bad" on Synplant and Random, and it all makes sense. And bro and the comment that 7 Deadly Snares "better be free" with 7 whole as unique algorithms, oh my god, like it's crazy how different the perspective is, I'll just say that much. But yeah, It's just different mindsets really. You could kind of read this whole thing as "trap beats are less creative", or what a certain insect might call "spinning a narrative via lying by omission", but that's not really the point, of course hip-hop has a lot of cool stuff going on as a genre, I just wanted to highlight the difference in mindset on sound design specifically.

The coolest thing about Synplant is the preview it offers of what other companies will do better in the future. As it stands, genopatch just feels like a cool novelty to me - it's fun to play around with, but not something I can see myself using in tracks. Partially because I just really dislike the UI / worflow. I'd like it a lot more if it had a more conventional synth interface. Nothing like the original sample, but could be a fun way to get some inspiration as a starting point for a patch. Damn bro. What plugins DO you like, lol?? Anyway, I don’t know how I feel about random. I’d actually have to play either it first, and to do that, I have to buy it. I think they do offer a money back guarantee if you aren’t satisfied though. Still, if you don’t watch the amazing visuals of the plugin- like, if you look away from your phone, and just listen to the sounds -it kinda sounds like utter rubbish lol. Do you listen me Pigments? It’s my new favorite plugin.

if you want to know someone who did a song using only (or mostly) synplant 2, you can look up longestsoloever on youtube and one of his latest attempts with synplant 2 was making a drumset, some plucks and instruments and all that, even a cat meow, and eventually made a song with some of these

I tested Life and would say that 20% of what it pops out is very usable (and you can pop through new stems quickly). It seems to work best with a certain frequency of sounds, midrange. I don't need it at that price thought either. Agree, Synplant is unusable.

This video kinda sums up a lot of my feelings about Andrew... I think he's a really great person and seems genuinely nice and earnest, but he's gotten to the size where he's a whole brand and I'm not really interested in his channel anymore because it's too much advertising, which seems to be a problem all music production youtubers face when growing to a certain size

Honestly I feel like he’s kinda “through with YT” for lack of better terms. He made really great content for like over a decade, and I think he’s kind of past that phase of his life, started a family, developing plugins, he is doing a collaboration project with Rob Scallon, and more he’s kinda just using his platform as a means of promoting things.

That throwaway comment about anime eyebrows was pretty nasty and with definite racist undertones. You know what's worse than affiliate links? Hooonestly, saying 'Hooonestly' and mumbling 'mid' as if it conveyed deeper meaning. While making money from reaction pieces to work others have put more effort into. Work by people who have created some value in the community, for example by inventing useful tools. And that contains some at least some useful information; rather than just being hateful and petty.

Don't know about your resistance to synplant. I've created a huge library of samples using it. It's not the actual synth, at least not live. I'll have a rolling sampler recording when I'm using the synth and have so many uses. From weird shit to extremely similar drum hits with just enough variation I can use them to defeat the robotic nature of drum samples.

tbh the best of the year for me has been the new pigments drop cos you cant really beat it for 65 dollars. Great VA with some really good sample and wavetable stuff, I just wish the effects section was less clunky but tbh the whole all synth types in one thing is getting boring. Personally Ive been enjoying the weird experimentation baby audio has been doing with atoms and it kinda sent me down a physical modeling rabbit hole

In regards to affiliate links mentioned early in the vid, I just don’t see affiliate links as being that bad or as poor form. Of course there are some situations where links or certain links shouldn’t shared, but so long as the creator doesn’t cross the obvious lines I think they can be a great way for creators to grow their project/ channel. Regardless of links, content creators of the music production flavor are going to be suggesting certain products over others, & you can be sure that a portion of their viewers/ followers will buy whatever product before the video/ content is even over. For those type sales, I’d give a liberal guess that at least half of the relevant sales wouldn’t have happened w/out the creators kudos. Weaver I’d suspect there’s quite a many products you’ve suggested/ promoted with no kickback to ur wallet. This just an observation, but it seems the most successful channels maintain a gradual or modestly steady growth. Some of that can be done solely w/dialog. [ At a time when special-fx is becoming a bigger & bigger crutch, all dialog type content is actually my fav when executed well. ]. However, upgrading gear is going to inevitably take precedence over other things & sadly that requires those 🎶💲💸 Dolla-Dolla-Bills y’all 💸 💲 🎶 & affiliate links provide a convenient/ chill type passive income source to fund future expansion. Resisting use of these links just seems detrimental to ur channel Weaves-Aroni. Honestly, I’d buy something off an affiliate link of urs, if you had one, just to throw ya a little support. Or if I’ve already donated to someone thru Patreon, for example, then it’d give me another way support whatever content I’m consuming. Of course take all my little opinions with a grain of salt cuz I’m certainly no pro at this stuff & produce very little content of my. own, so I don’t consider my thoughts any better than anyone else’s & I also don’t consider them to be gospel. Hell most will see how long my post is & be onto next person’s post after barely a glance here lol. Ppl are so sensitive to a few little paragraphs as if they were full novels. When thinking to myself I just think in bundles of thoughts rather than just one at a time, so my posts reflect that.

Weaver you got to give him some credit though for releasing that video and admitting that they fucked up, and owning it and then making it one of the better rent to owns out there for real they stepped up and I think they knocked out of the park when it comes to a company getting called out cuz like they're all trying to make money at the end of the day they were just a little bit too forward thinking on that one. Someone who admits a mistake and recovers from it publicly is far better than someone who is making them privately and covering them up after that r2r shit who knows how many companies are doing that

He was much cooler a few years ago, one of my favorite music youtubers, really passionate and interesting stuff, but he’s been at it for over a decade, and it seems he’s kinda “done” with RU-vid, like moved on with his life, and he’s almost just using the platform he built over the years to occasionally promote his stuff. He is doing a somewhat interesting series on RU-vid right now with Rob Scallon, possibly a bit corny, I’m not super aware of it, but yeah.

Keep in mind, Andrew lives in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, where the cost of living in this county is completely INSANE, so the "grind hard" mentality that comes off in his videos is just commonplace across the entire city. Nobody lives in Toronto without the same money-making mindset that Andrew has. Let's also not forget that Andrew has a VERY successful professional career in music beyond just his RU-vid Channel, so he obviously knows his stuff.
