If anyone tells you that you can’t cosplay a character because of your race, body type, eye color, etc. DONT LISTEN! it’s so wrong and just unfair. Don’t let anything stop you from cosplaying who you want❤️

But if a white person wants to cosplay as a black character there is usually an uproar around it right? I have a friend who really wants to cosplay as a black character but repeatedly says he cant because people will become upset and he doesnt want to hurt any black folk by whitewashing a character.

I got so triggerd when it came to the contest and body types. You should never stop anybody or yourself if they have "the wrong" for the cosplay. Cosplay is for everyone. Regarding of race, body type or age. To me this should be comment sense. Sorry that I went on a rant there

About the comfort level point: Though your comfort level might help you chose a costume, if you really want to cosplay a character, you can always modify their costume to fit your comfort. If you can't or aren't comfortable wearing high heels bring a different pair of shoes, if you're afraid people will walk on the back of your dress or cape, sew it a little shorter so it doesn't drag on the ground, if you feel a costume is a little too revealing for you, you can modify it, etc. The practice run of a cosplay can really help you determine what you are comfortablewith and in , if you're going to be too cold or too warm for the convention and it'd recommend getting used wearing certain element of your costume for example a new pair of shoes or an eyepatch before the event. And of course, casual cosplays are valid and you don't have to cosplay to go at a convention. Also, yeah the similar body point is yikes.

I tend to dress more conservative (those ride high swimsuit/bikini costumes are galaxies out of my comfort zone) so my poison ivy cosplay is more covering with an added skirt so i don't want to hide behind everything. Like power to the people that can go around wearing very little for full authenticity but I just can't handle the inner turmoil of being seen by everyone.

Sometimes I like to 'get into character' - Like walking or generally trying to exude the presence of the character where possible (though this really doesn't last long because i can get really excited) Like if my character is a bubbly excitable person i'll kind of act up being that and if my character is a dark figure that skulks in the shadows I'll try to embody it. I'm not good at making cosplay and I don't want to buy everything as a ready made cosplay (making it is half the fun for me) so I keep an eye out in charity shops etc and centre the cosplay around a piece of clothing that I modify. This means my cosplay can take a while to form (I have a waistcoat that is screaming to become a doctor who cosplay but no matching pieces have surfaced to work with yet) They end up being a mix of clothes that I bought and modified and accessories that I crafted My frozen cosplay started off as a formal wear dress from a charity shop that I owned before the movie came out (had a whole 'I own that dress!' kind of moment while watching the film) altered and dip-bleached (rather poorly due to inexperience) and then covered in sequins. It's still one that I'm really proud of.

I hate to say it but there are some cosplay contests that will put how you look (as in your body type and how accurate you are with your cosplay). I went to a Supernatural Con and they didn't ask how you made the cosplay or anything, it was all based on fan response. So what happened was this girl who looked almost EXACTLY like Claire Novak (basically she looks like a girl with totally casual clothing) won while so many other people put so much more work and effort into their cosplay (low key myself included, I had to do SFX makeup to look like my head was cut off. Another person had NAILED the Dogeball Dean cosplay right down to the embroidered polo but she was of a POC so she was literally the only Dean who hardly got applause, meanwhile if someone else who was white wore that costume they totally would've potentially won). She won like $300 of merch... For looking like the actress....

It's really weird to me to see so many people saying they don't see anyone in character, except the occasional Deadpool. It's been a few years since I've been to a con, has the environment changed or something while I've been away? Because I've always seen people slipping in and out of character at conventions, especially with people cosplaying the same series and even more so if they came as a group. I don't see people in character the whole time, but it seemed pretty normal to work in mannerisms or speech patterns the character would have when it felt appropriate. It made it so much more fun. Honestly, that was the best part of cosplaying for me and how I met my friends. I'm finally getting to go to a convention again later this year, and I hope this is still happening, because I must admit, I'll be rather sad if it's not. I'm in this for the 'play' as much as the costume. Or am I just misinterpreting this, and people are talking about spending the whole con completely in character or something, because I would agree that no one does that, that'd be excessive.

As someone who has been to D23 (Disney convention every 2 years), you are not restricted to just Disney characters. it's uncommon but I have seen a few nondisney cosplays several times (one year it was all the Candyland characters). So no they won't turn you away if you're in a non-brand cosplay. Also, anyone can cosplay any character they want. so matter what your body type, age, race, anything. cosplay is about having fun. you don't need to look exactly like the character. I'm a plus-size cosplayer and if I kept all my cosplays to just plus-size characters I wouldn't have a whole lot of cosplays then (I've been cosplaying for 11 year)

gross article aside, I usually base my cosplays on my comfort level rather than who's specifically my favourite. I'll just cosplay them to show how much I like the franchise, rather than my favourite character. For example when I really starting getting into demon slayer I made a mental list of all the characters I'd be comfortable with, and it came down to Kanao, even though my favourite would be a totally different character.

To give my two cents into all this that doubles as advice for new cosplayers. From a moderately new cosplayer to the new blood. Dress up as whatever character you want. Race, gender and body type are irrelevant. What matters is you like the character, no matter how popular or obscure the character is. That's all that matters.

D23 does have some restrictions on costumes. Here's the first thing that popped up: "All event attendees-including adults-may attend the D23 Expo dressed as their favorite Disney, Marvel, and Star Wars Characters. Attendees in costume must adhere to the following guidelines: Costumes should be family friendly and may not be obstructive, offensive, or violent. Guests may wear masks."

So the real question is: could you be Shrek so long as it's family friendly? 👀

@@AnyaPanda Well since dreamworks and Disney are two separate companies. One of the employees who left started dreamworks and they've been rivals ever since, so my guess is no. Also I didn't expect a reply, holy gosh.

I mean having a test run is fair but not for acting. Instead checking for when all your pieces are together whether you still have proper movement as sometimes items might slip, you might trip over a skirt or long coat, your wig might get caught on a loose fastening you may need to sort out etc.

Interesting, I've never heard of conventions denying access if it's themed and you are not dressed in that correct theme. At least, I've never been part of events like that. I tend to wear something that fits in with the event so I have never tried. I have been to a Xena convention, though, and had someone dress up as Jack Sparrow. Definitely felt out of place.

Currently, in South Africa, costume hire shops do offer more specific cosplay costumes (like anime characters). Some of them will work with conventions like Comic Con Africa to do activations for the upcoming con or work with cosplayers to show off their costumes at conventions. The cosplay community is growing in SA and a lot of casual pop culture fans, who aren't cosplayers, will hire out more known characters from recent geek movies (is MCU) and wear them to conventions. There is a costume hire company that is currently offering discounts on their new anime costume stock to cosplayers in return for advertising their costumes on their social media.

The body type advice was weird. One of my best friends cosplays Junko Enoshima and she looks AMAZING, she's flat chested, but it makes zero difference. My daughter is 6 foot tall and looks epic as Kokichi Ouma. We have a friend who is way shorter than her and cosplays Shuichi, we've taken some awesome photos together. I certainly don't have Sakura'a muscles, and I'm WAY shorter than her. But I've never let that stop me from cosplaying her, coz I love her, and she's my favourite.

I was under the impression that it was common too. I've always done it. It's fun and has helped me make new friends in the past. Don't feel weird, I think it happens more than this video would lead you to believe. As long as you're not making the people around you uncomfortable, I think it's a great thing to do. It is costume 'play' after all.

I found the point about being aware of what sort of restrictions the event may have on what you can wear to be sort of an interesting point mainly in that I was expecting it to say something more along the lines of make sure to be aware of whether it is a family event or not because in that case the event may have a sort of minimum dress code so to speak. Most of the cons I have been to have been general anime and family friendly cons. However, I have been to Power Rangers centric con as well as a Dragon Ball centric con. The first time my husband went to the Power Rangers one he said he saw one person dressed as Naruto and another person dressed as a character from the Green Mile. The first year we went to the Dragon Ball centric con we saw someone cosplayed as Bugs Bunny and another as Erza from Fairy Tail. The second year we went to that same con I cosplayed as Kushina from Naruto on one of the days.

Hello Anya! I jst wanna say, I am from small country in Europe and we consider in our cosplay competition if you "fit" the character. It's not much points (it's like 5 out of 100), but in most of our competitions you get points for picking character that fits you, so to me this makes 100% sense if you wanna attend competition. However, we are not bodyshamers, and it's not ment for shaming someone for being plus size and picking really small girl, it's generally ment to put some extra points to someone who did their makeup so well that they match their character with the face or achieved similar silhouette (for example if character have big tiddies and you don't, if you considered putting some pads into your costume, you get some extra points).

No one has to limit themselves to cosplay just because of their body type, race, gender, etc!!! I the shortest girl in my friend group, (we all cosplay together) and the doesn't stop me from doing what I want! sure, it doesn't look canonical, but no one gives a flying fuck, you can't change anything you don't have control of **cough cough** my lack of growing **cough cough** It's silly to be judgemental just because someone's cosplaying a character that doesn't fit their natural body.

Not @ them talking about body types.... Do they think that white ppl won't win a cosplay contest bc the character is Asian? Or the fact that a Junko cosplayer might have more pigtails then two??? Or the fact that somebody is a bit thicker or more slim???

I wouldn’t say “most”. However, some do and if they find that find then that’s totally cool. The problem is that the article is making it seem like it’s a requirement and that everybody does it, which is incorrect.

Do some research before making a video and speaking min something as if you're an "expert". COSTUME SHOPS do in fact rent/sell costumes for that can be used for cosplay or parties or whatever the need for a costume may be. Don't I'll inform people that this isn't possible when, in fact, it is. Matter of fact, the first convention I attended was in a rented boba fett costume. It was expensive, but it was rented. Correct your video and please do some research before spouting information that isn't valid
