This is what I just pulled from the MLB rule book and it probably explains why ejections seem to happen so quickly: "No player, manager or coach shall be permitted to argue the exercise of the umpires’ discretion in resolving the play and any person so arguing shall be subject to ejection." Add to this that technically only managers are allowed to appeal calls and this video is the result.
@TheNascarfan999
@TheNascarfan999 4 года назад
The letter of the rule is that you are not allowed to argue an umpire's call of a ball vs a strike and doing so is worthy of an ejection. In reality, it happens all the time in various forms and is up to the umpire to decide when they've "had enough" of a player or coach arguing.
@Ledhead775
@Ledhead775 4 года назад
7:40 That's called a "check-swing". As long as you don't let the bat go past your hips on the swing, you can stop it and it won't count as a swing. Normally, the call goes to either the first or third base umpire because they have a better angle on it. This one was definitely a missed call though.

MLB umps are notoriously thin-skinned. I saw Ichiro Suzuki, one of the game's all-time greatest hitters, get ejected at the plate. The ump had called a strike and Ichiro used his bat to point to where the pitch had been out of the strike zone, never said a word. He got tossed anyway. I don't know how it works in UK or European sports, but American referees and umpires are used to profanity being directed at them. Swearing is not a valid reason to throw someone out of a game.
@brianeleighton
@brianeleighton 4 года назад
Using your bat to show the ump where YOU think the pitch was is guaranteed to get you tossed. That is not being "thin skinned"...Ichiro was 100% wrong there. In fact, umpires get questioned quite frequently about calls by both catchers and hitters. Watch or listen to Trevor Plouffe on a few episodes of Talking Baseball that he discusses this very topic. He has seen catchers have heated arguments with umpires for entire at bats and not get tossed. The difference? The catcher never turns to face the umpire, so the only people who know are the hitter, catcher and umpire. You show up an umpire in front of a MLB crowd, only an idiot would expect to not get tossed. Edit: Also, you can scream profanities all you want at an umpire...as long as it sticks to the call. If a person makes the profanity personal, then they get tossed. Players all the time will tell an umpire, "Oh come on, that call was horseshit" and be fine. If they were to say, "Oh come on, you have been horseshit all day" they will get tossed. It was kind of funny that you were saying how these umpires were thin skinned in these clips. By rule, if a player or manager argues balls and strikes they are subject to immediate ejection. Can you imagine how long games would go if players could argue balls and strikes? The fact that these guys were not tossed the second they opened their mouths shows the opposite...the umpires showed restraint. Fun fact: The umpire was right on the calls to Machado, Harper got a gift from the 3rd base umpire and should have already been struck out when he got the pitch he was bitching about and Verlander said "You have been screwing me all game". That tells me that he desperately wanted that borderline pitch to be called a strike, but the umpire has consistently been calling it a ball. That is not on the umpire, it is on Verlander for continuing to go there. The umpire has proven to him that he is not and will not call it a strike, don't whine about it, adjust Justin.

On baseball umpires are kinda held in similar regard to a judge in a courtroom so there is a level of respect that umpires expect, making an argument is not usually getting you booted but generally disrespectful behavior will

Unwritten rule of baseball is you don't argue balls and strikes with the umpire. You can argue about being called out, but not a strike or ball.

Baseball has unwritten rules. One understood rule is that you can say something negative to the umpire as long as you're not looking at him. If you stare right at him and yell at him, it's seen as disrespecting the official and he'll throw you out. That's why Verlander was like "I wasn't even looking at you".

"They take no shit, do they?" It's against the rules to argue balls/strikes. Little comments/disagreements usually get a pass, but if it goes too far, it results in ejection.

This is a big problem in baseball right now. The rules need to change so that umpires cant throw players out so easily. People pay to see the players, its a shame these stars are getting thrown out for being frustrated.

Players (and coaches) aren't permitted to argue if a pitch was a ball or a strike. The ump can eject them for doing so, probably because a game would take 4 days if every batter argued over the strike zone. Here's a good article that talks about the written and unwritten rules for arguing balls and strikes whether it's the batter, pitcher, or catcher who's doing the arguing. www.kansascity.com/sports/mlb/kansas-city-royals/article214693860.html

You don't "see" batters argue as much because if they are professional about it, they are subtle. If they don't like a call, you'll notice them sorta taking a bit longer getting reading in the box, staring at the ground....usually they are making a comment about a call(s). The Umpire will typically allow that to happen. Same goes for the catchers....not uncommon for a catcher to make comments as it's not as noticeable to everyone else. Pitchers (and catchers) for that matter also have little ways of making their feelings known but it's a bit more obvious. If a catcher sits there framing a pitch for way longer then normal it's because he's trying to imply "That was a strike and I want you to know that" pitchers will sorta stare at the ump after a call they disagree with.

You're allowed to show your discrepancies on most things with the umpires as long as you keep a level head, but arguing the balls and strikes is the one thing that you are absolutely not allowed to do.

If you do what Machado did, you'll get tossed for sure. He argued about more than one pitch, and after strike 3 he turned around and started jawing in the umpire's face. I think any umpire in MLB would have thrown him out for that. But it's what I've come to expect from Machado. He's a hothead. He's always getting into fights over nothing. He tried to start a fight with Josh Donaldson when he (Machado) fell on his ass after being tagged. Donaldson had done nothing wrong, but Machado looked like a fool so he had to take it out on someone. In another game, Machado threw his bat in the general direction of the pitcher because he thought the pitcher was throwing at him. There are ways you can complain to an umpire without getting in trouble for it. First, don't do it while looking at the ump. Second, you can complain about the call, but don't get personal. Third, you can do it for a little while, but not after you've gone back to the dugout. Fourth, you can't keep arguing after the umpire warns you to stop. I don't know what the deal was with Verlander's ejection. Based on what I saw, the umpire shouldn't have thrown him out. Maybe Verlander said something really personal that the umpire heard even though Verlander had his back turned at the time. Or maybe there was a history between Verlander and this particular umpire. But it did look like the ump overreacted. Umpires have little tolerance for arguments over balls and strikes. There are hundreds of pitches in a game, and if they let players argue about them, they'd hear nothing but complaints all day. It would slow down the game, and the whining would quickly become intolerable.

Players and coaches are cry babies. You can’t argue balls and strikes. Plain and simple. Otherwise you’re subject to ejection. In this situation Harper got a break from the 3rd base umpire so he should have been out anyways even if the pitch he got rung up didn’t get thrown. As an umpire myself I see no issues.
