Harden's handles are nice but his shot creation is more a result of his (controversial) footwork and excellent body control. I guess those are a part of handles as well, he's just a different kind of ballhandler who relies on strength a lot.

To answer your question, great defensive players have great lateral movements. They also have greater discipline that they don't bite easily. On top of that they all use their physical tools, which most players don't have, like long wingspan. They also have all these sort of tricks like for example, riding the hip of the offensive player, which they can do because of the first traits (great lateral movement). Although, it is a foul to hold the offensive player, they developed tricks to conceal to the referees these subtle touches on the offensive players.

How do you guard this? It depends on what else the player excels at. If he’s not a good shooter, give him a little space, don’t reach, and focus on the torso. They can fake you with the head, arms, legs, ball, but it’s extremely hard to fake with your torso. If he’s a shooter you play him a little closer, but the rest remains the same. It’s simple. Not easy, don’t get the two confused, but those few steps will help a lot. Also, play to their strong side. Force a righty to go left and vice versa. The keys are still don’t reach, and focus on the torso.

To me Jason Williams is number 1 by a long shot. He did things that you are fundamentally not supposed to do. He would dribble not low but clear up to his shoulders right in the defenders face. Always with his weak hand btw. And there's nothing the defender could do about it

There were some older players that really should be on this list. It should have included Isaiah Thomas (the 80s one, not the one in the league now, not related) and even go back to 1960s Celtics great PG Bob Cousy. He didn't do all the things these guys are doing today, but they all built on his foundation of brilliant handles.
