Hi Janne, as you know today's Turkish Republic was an empire. And there are still Turkish population living as minority around our neighbours. One of them is Bulgaria. During the time when Bulgaria under communist regime they tried to assimilate Turkish living in Bulgaria by chancing names or closing schools or sending them to concentration camps. This continued during 80's.After talks with Bulgarian goventment In 1989 Turkey opened the border and started to accept immigrants. As far as I know many forced to leave their homes and they arrived without nothing. When communist regime ended in Bulgaria everything went back to normal. Today some went back to their lands or homes and some still living here.

We, the Balkan peoples and Balkan Turks, went through very difficult times and it was not easy for us to migrate to Turkey. There are too many Turks in Bulgaria, they tried to assimilate for years, but they could not succeed, thousands of them fled to Turkey. I remember well that period, then President Turgut Özal brought Naim to Turkey and he spent a lot of effort.
In 1984 Bulgarian Communist government passed an executive order to assimilate its turkish minority of 2 and a half mln people by changing their muslim names with Christian Bulgarian ones. At the time Bulgaria was 9 million population out of which 2 and a half million were of Turkish ethnicity. Naim was one of them.
