I live in Utah and can safely say that this stuff is not happening in my area. Calling it Utah culture is a stretch, I think it’s more of a few affluent areas in Utah. No one I know drinks soda like that or gets Botox and laughing gas is more like Valium it calms you it doesn’t make you high. We’ve had girls get pregnant out of wedlock and they were completely accepted and loved. Makes me grateful to be where I am. I do agree that people in the LDS faith should not judge and should love and accept everyone, so maybe there is something to digest in the show, although I won’t be watching.

Yes, Church is for the sinners, but it's also NOT a place for publicity stunts. If she invited them as her friends that's one thing, and no one bats an eye when less active members come to blessings. And I don't know how much backlash they actually got for coming or if it was imagined or expected, but yeah, I would be irritated if women from a show that made LDS women look silly, paraded into a baby blessing just for the show.
@msorensen1581
@msorensen1581 8 дней назад
Exactly. A baby blessing is a sacred event, usually the first big spiritual event that happens to our precious children when we welcome them into this world. I wouldn’t want someone to possibly use it for anything related to a reality show. My faith and sacred family experiences are not for your entertainment. Now, if she wasn’t associated with this show, but still was preggo - and not even an active member, I’d invite. But because of the association with the show, I wouldn’t invite.

I hope you guys review it some more with more context! Would I call these moms members? Yes since they are baptized and know the culture within Utah. Would I call them actively trying to follow Christ's example? Not at all, since most of the played up actions are either for more Momtok clout or dramatizing their lives. I think they give an interesting perspective on the opposite spectrum of members compared to the other version Hulu/other streaming services show in like Under the Banner of Heaven/Keep Sweet (I also understand those both went into extremely sects not related to LDS faith) but it's definitely not an accurate representation of average members trying to be good examples. Single moms have challenges in life the church is better able to help them with. Yes, we know the law of chastity. we know they didn't keep it, but the welfare of the baby and mother take priority. Dating as a single mom is a different thing altogether. When I was single, I dated several single moms, and for me, it was the challenge that I felt I had to compete with an ex lover, and that made me nervous, others wouldn't care. The person that was un-invited to the baby blessing is an ex-Mormon and she pregamed (drank some alcohol) before the event. The drama was around the fact that she was UN-invited to the baby blessing. The people that did the un-inviting didn't seem to trust that Jessi would come to the baby blessing not drunk or tipsy. Jessi was also the only one in the group who had openly left the church (she had a bad experience with her first husband who was an active member. She cheated on her first husband, and in other podcasts say that she never felt fully accepted by her first husbands family because they were all active members and were super self righteous and judgmental).

But its not completely benign. That said, your impairment is not the same either. However, why is impairment even the thing we are judging? Heber J Grant was clear he did not want the recreational use of habit forming substances. He also clarified dose matters. Getting botox 3-4 times a year is not likely going to lead to dependence. The Word of Wisdom says many things. It states hot drinks aren't good for your belly....that has been revealed to be coffee. Coffee is addictive and hot coffee isn't good for your throat. It states that Alcohol is good for medical uses, (I think). I haven't got my scriptures open in front of me. It states that tobacco is good for horses....it cleans them out. Further down in the Word of Wisdom it states that all things should be used sparingly for our health...(I'm paraphrasing). So, should we drink a 6 pack of soda a day? Of course not. Do some people drink a 6 pack a day? Yep. People are people.
@712iamMe
@712iamMe 8 дней назад
It's not necessarily about being bad for you. Alcohol impairs your decision making function. I also heard an interesting argument about herd immunity. Not everyone who drinks will become addicted to alcohol, but in a place where nobody drinks you are protecting the more suseptible. Coffee contains caffeine in higher amounts than a regular soda. Caffeine can also be highly addictive and cause withdrawal symptoms the same as other drugs. It's also why we don't drink tea. Can people still get addicted to caffeine in soda? Yes. I know people who have to drink coke every day. The Word of Wisdom is a product of it's day, 200 years ago. It addressed very specific health issues at the time, so by definition, it doesn't talk every single bad thing we should avoid today that weren't issues back in the day. You're supposed to adhere to it's teachings, but also use sound judgement on other matters of health. To me, any substance that can cause an addiction has three ability to rob me of my agency. The whole point of this life is to learn how to properly use our agency, thus anything that prevents me from exercising that gift from God should be avoided.

A baby blessing can be done by someone other than the father as long as they worthily hold the priesthood and the parents want it that way. When my youngest daughter was to be blessed my parents traveled quite a way for it. Just before sacrament meeting it dawned on me that my father never got to bless any of his children (he joined the church years after we were all born). I last minute asked my father to do the blessing. He later told me he had been praying he would get to do that since he never got to bless his own, but didn't feel it was right to ask.
