I would side with no progression after death. Alma 34 is the first scripture that comes to mind. "After this day of life... then cometh the night of darkness wherein there can be no labor performed." On the subject of punishment there is another reason to punish: justice. God says that justice cannot be robbed and has laid out the terms by which justice can be appeased. I feel like it would defeat the purpose of life if we could do all the work after we die and achieve the ultimate prize regardless of how we lived. What is the point of earth life if we could eternally progress regardless?

Thank you so much for your story, your faith, your strength, and no matter how hard things got for you, you could not deny the witness of the Spirit. Your strength, your faith, and your connection with your Savior are a beautiful inspiration to all of us. You KNOW HE LIVES, AND COMMUNICATES WITH YOU!...and so do I. What a beautiful, and difficult story, but you are strong, and because of your correct decisions in the face of adversity you are a beacon in the darkness for many others with similar dificulties. God bless you!

How could you guys belligerently lie? You quote D&C 87 and conveniently leave half the verse out. Here’s the whole verse: 3 For behold, the Southern States shall be divided against the Northern States, and the Southern States will call on other nations, even the nation of Great Britain, as it is called, and they shall also call upon other nations, in order to defend themselves against other nations; and then war shall be poured out upon all nations. Yes, Joseph Smith “prophesied” there was going to be a civil war (which really wasn’t anything because most of the politicians at that time were predicting this anyway) but his greatest mistake was he added on to what everyone was saying at that time. He said Great Britain would join in and then world war would break out among all nations. Literally read your own scripture. God calls us to tests prophets. We need to be laboring in prayer for these guys. ✝️

All the study I’ve done, it wouldn’t make sense that there isn’t progression between kingdoms. The church hasn’t taken a stance on it for a reason, because if they out right said there was progression, then people wouldn’t care near as much about keeping the commandments now. Maybe I’m wrong, but if you really read into it, there are so many things that imply progression between kingdoms.

Great interview. Important to have “thick skin but soft heart”…loved that insight. I think it’s also important to be bold in defending the kingdom of God…from situation to situation our response may need to vary, depending on how the Spirit guides. Ultimate example is Jesus Christ. He was normally calm and kind in his responses. Yet sometimes issued strong rebukes, while other times said nothing at all, like to King Herrod, for example. As Latter-day Saints we both “fight and invite…” in this war of words. And always with love at the center of our motivation. Thank you for the great interview!

This is one of my all time favorite youtube interviews on any channel, let alone Saints Unscripted :) My wife and I have been fans of Jared's "Unshaken" Come Follow Me channel for 2 1/2 years now, having watched every episode beginning with the tail end of the D&C study year. He does an awesome job covering the scriptures and so studying the scripture with Jared's insights and inspirational comments has helped me to more fully understand and appreciate the messages and doctrine contained within our scriptures, so far. Thanks for having this nice interview with him and this is the kind of quality content that I most love about Saints Unscripted. In many ways Jared is my role model as far as my wanting to help others through their challenges in trying to maintain their faith in God and in the teachings of our faith in this era where there is such an information overload, with so many different voices telling us opposing views on just about any topic, religious or not. I don't have as near as thick of a skin as Jared but I'm working on that :) Having grown up as, and having spent much of my life as a sort of a perfectionist with an inferiority complex it is very challenging for me to develop a thick skin. I have however also done a fair amount of research as well as soul searching surrounding all of the truth claims of my religious faith, as well as in trying to develop a loving and trusting relationship with God in general and a more complete and logical knowledge of the reasons behind the need for a Savior and Redeemer, as well as a much closer relationship with the Savior. I will say that listening to Jared's podcast, along with my other efforts to stay on the covenant path and to read and contemplate uplifting and inspirational books (along with scripture) have helped me in this regard over the past couple of years. I'm fairly introverted, and always have been, so it's difficult for me to share insights of my own with others who might be going through a difficult time with their religious faith. But I'm hoping to contribute, maybe at the very least on a much smaller scale than Jared is doing, to help share the burden :) I've researched fairly deeply all of the critical arguments that I'm aware of currently, with plausible answers to them, coming out of all of this with a faith much stronger than before, and so I think at least that I'm in the 'atonement' stage rather than the 'creation' stage of my religious faith :) I am also a firm believer in science and reason as well as religion and so I feel that the answers to the questions that I've received may also appeal to the scientifically minded folks. One of the things I've appreciated a lot about Saints Unscripted is that they have a similar scientifically minded approach, especially in their 'faith and beliefs' segments which are now part of the KeystoneLDS channel with David Snell, going forward.

This statement seems to invalidate Gen Z/Millennials' experience. Of course we've "heard the music", we grew up going to church with our parents and being exposed to mainstream religion/spirituality our entire lives... and it hasn't been helpful or good for a lot of us. "Spiritual but not religious" means rejection of the dogmatic practices of organized religion while acknowledging and maybe celebrating the underlying spiritual values that permeate most, if not all, religions: empathy, community, mindfulness, humility, etc. Saying "have you really heard the music?" feels like he's dismissing our generation's ability to discern what is real, which is pretty unfair considering it's impossible to prove one way or another.

It’s the opposite of how you interpreted his statement. I’m not saying he’s right or wrong. But what he is saying is; for those of us who say “I’m spiritual, not religious” he’s asking is, when you went to church, did you only follow the steps? Did you eat the bread on fast Sunday, and instead of feeling the spiritual nourishment of the sacrament, you only appreciated that you got to have something in your belly, and a sip to quench your thirst. When sitting in a class, did you only blurt out the answers you were trained to repeat, (the dogma, as you put it) or where you finding deeper insights in listening to the experiences of others, and sharing with the class your experiences. When you participated in service projects, did you only do it because your leader got you up early on Saturday and drove you to the project, or did you see the single mothers eyes as you helped her get her, and her children’s things into a truck? Think James 1:27. He isn’t being dismissive. He’s asking a serious question, because when he talks to people their description of religion does not sound like James 1:27. I have both moved without the music, and learned to listen to it, I still fluctuate between the two myself, but I know that when I listen to the music, my religious experience IS spiritual.

Being Spiritual makes more sense it’s basically saying you believe there’s something out there but you don’t know what it is. Religious is more close minded and saying only gods out there or Vishnu, Buddha, allah, shiva, Etc. it seems very unrealistic to put all your eggs in 1 basket when there’s thousands of baskets. 🤔🤔 June 2024 for me marks the Anniversary of my ripping that band aid off of telling my spouse I just can't believe it anymore. That also includes telling my Bishop the same. I first started nuancing my beliefs over a decade ago. The willful decision to leave my activity in the Republican party, where I saw only a Cabal of Kingmen, to join the Libertarian Party dug at my soul as much then as my faith loss now. At that time I also embraced a more universalist idea of Omnism. It fit very well with the 13th & 11th Articles of Faith for me. Also Mark 9:38-42. I think religion is very much a sodapop taste test. We each have a unique set of taste buds. Pepsi is nasty-sweet, Coke is extra tart, and Dr. Pepper is just right. In 2016, aa a Libertarian candidate for Governor of Utah, I attended Pride on Saturday and went to the adult Session of my Stake Conference, wearing my rainbow tie. In that experience, with a member of the 70, in the discussion of missionary efforts, I said that it's not enough to invite people to places where we are comfortable. We have to be willing to meet them where they are comfortable. I got kind of beat on by some people in the campaign. The false dilemma of politics divergent from leadership being problematic. Yes I've found, as Richard Carrier wrote, reason to doubt. I've spent hundreds of hours in Biblical study. Isaiah 7 with Unshaken, Rabbi Tovia Singer, & Bart Erhman. And the odd Apologetics of the Stoddards for Polyandry... and this ridiculous Dogma space of Mary Virginity but a plural wife of God, and Pregnant by God (Brigham Young said it in the Journal of discourses before Ed Decker put it in The Gosmakers.) My belief & hope puts God aa a Cat lover in Schrodinger's box. I've rejected the double speaking, gaslighting, God approved before God opposed craziness. And to be blunt John Gee & Kerry Muhlstein owe the late Robert K Ritner, & Klaus Baer a formal apology. When I lie I correct my own mistakes. I'll apologize as publicly and openly as I have shared my lie, or what I believed to be true. One of the things I have loved about listening to Bart Erhman is that although he's in an Atheist space he still believes in the life of Jesus (Yeshua) and continues to seek what we he can original scroll source language. We live in a time where the defense of Christianity is often the least Christ-like thing being done. We're born into life as caterpillars where our crysillis is that faith crisis and a genuine understanding of hope, belief, faith, & knowledge comes as we gain strength in those butterfly wings. Some Butterflies are Mormons while others are Catholic, Methodist, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, Atheist... etc. I don't want to fight people. I think there must be some substantial maturation of belief that we have no more Judases- no more feeling so distraught and alone, and like some warped foolish idea like blood-atonement is a solution. Not for a loss of faith, for loving differently, or just having doubts. Consider just as much "The Chosen" and how it crushed Thomas to see Lazarus raised after his beloved was not... Buried my dad in the middle of June. The man who ordained me an Elder, and blessed me that I might rest until proper medical attention could be consulted. I stopped writhing from my appendicitis until the Doctor called, and then it was on again... was that, and blessings I have given mere Placebo effect? I'm no lazy learner. I reject the leadership ad hominem and garbage excuses or justification for me being less than because my faith is shot. I'm tired of the whimsical miracle and Schadenfreude that makes a "mysterious way" in the ever changing unchangeable deity. Hey every member a missionary l- but if you Apostates could just stifle yourself... but the new convert is an Apostate to their family they are advised to share the Gospel with...🙄🙄 let me know when the Church figures out how to be consistent and understand itself rightside out and inside out.

Still watching, but in case he doesn’t address it later. How does Dr. Halverson grapple with past LDS leader comments explaining that the LDS church worships a different God and a different Jesus than the eternal God and Jesus of the Bible, yet the Bible (at least KJV version) is part of the LDS canon? If the LDS god and LDS Jesus are fundamentally different than the gospel truth’s in the Bible, how can Mormonism be true? Specifically when God said there were no gods before Him or after Him. Or the language in John chapter 1, indicating Jesus was with God in the beginning, that all things were created through Him. Setting aside all the apologetics about horses, iron, ships, literacy, translations, plagiarism, etc, it seems the characteristics of God and Jesus are the key detractor for anyone investigating Mormonism.

I think the genesis of your comment is where the answer is found. We (Latter-Day-Saints) and other Christians believe in the same God; the God of Abraham, the God of Israel, and Jesus Christ. The differences are that the Creeds of Men dictated and enforced by torture and death the teaching of Trinity, whereas when you have the Book of Mormon like we do, it becomes clear that God is God, Christ his son, the son of man, is Christ, and the Holy Spirit who is spirit and can thus witness directly to our hearts, work together in one Godhead, under God who is God, united in purpose, aka "One in purpose", to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of Man (mankind). For someone reading my comment, see for yourself. Pray to God, ask if you should get a Book of Mormon, then read it, and Pray to God continuously if it is His word and work. You too will learn and know.

When we were spirit children of God in His presence Our Father taught us that it does not matter if you are born in the midevil times. It does not matter if you are born white or black, slave, or free, rich or poor, whether you hold the priesthood or not. As kong as you prove you can be trusted with an immortal body of fkesh and bones that has sexual organs you will have a Celestial body, as long as you accept the gospel in the spirit world, if you were not goven a chance in mortality. A Celestial body is an immortal body that has sexual organs, like Adam and Eve had in the garden. A Terrestrial or Telestial body is a body that has no sexual organs. Section 132 of the D&C says thise who are sealed in eternal marriage by God's priesthood will have Celestial bodies even if the commit all j8nds of sin, even if they are resurrected in the second resurrection, as long as they don't break the marriage vow or blasfeme the Holy Ghost. We can repent of almost all sins as a spirit, but we must have a mortal body to repent of all violations of the law of chastity. Christ made heaven and earth as a spirit. Jeremiah was ordained as a spirit. We can do almost all things as a spirit, but we must have a body to live the law of chastity. It is a fair law. Buddhist, Misslems, etc qualify for a Celestial body if they live the law of chastity as a mortal, and accept the gospel when they have an opportunity

I would go in the position of no progression in the kingdoms of Heaven. DC says there’s only “an increase” in the highest degree of the celestial kingdom. Jesus Christ is the source of our faith and this earth (and the spirit world) is the time for us get the chance the accept him as our savior. The spirit world is specifically for those who have not had the chance to choose the savior or not.

I think the cultures we live in delays human growth and development. The male and famale body is ready for all adult activities by 16-17 years old. Also brain development may not be maxed out in late teens, but the brain is still matured enough to give full adult decision making. Life experience is delayed in our cultures because we enable royal treatment of our adolescent youth so much they don't learn the necessities to sustain life without all the services built up from our predecessors. Self discipline is not learned as early as can be learned. Most humans can start developing self discipline and self sufficiency about 7 or 8 years of age. In the Old Testament Samuel heard God's voice at 10 years old. Our country culture and church culture needs to change by expecting more responsibilities for our youth so they have enough life experience by the time they are adults. We need young youthful adults more than we need tired old adults running things. Youthful adults procreate and have the energy to adapt to all the flack from dating and entrepreneurship. Adolescents can start learning about their new feelings and hormones through dates as it begins to happen roughly 12 and 13. What good is gaining knowledge without the right to experience the use of that knowledge?
