This isn't about Meltzer's credibility or taste. This is about people wanting their own opinions parroted back at them.

Yes, and that's why I think AEW is overrated. Right now and for the last half year or more since Punk's left, AEW is sounding just more and more like highschool run by prom king and queen AKA 16 year olds.

I think he underestimates WWE matches because he’s Mr. Work-Rate. It doesn’t matter if the match made any money, if the feud has any heat or if the fans in the building and online reacted in a positive way; if the match didn’t involve 10 false finishes, choreographed flips and didn’t last at least half an hour, the match is no good.

After watching the match that, supposedly, reset the scale, all I can say is you are on to something

@@CulEdz That's definitely part of it, but even that doesn't fully explain it. He's just straight prejudiced, or else trolling at a certain point too. WWE have some top tier work-rate guys. This year alone, we've had matches like Sami Zayn vs Chad Gable, Sami Zayn vs Gunther, Oba Femi Vs. Josh Briggs Vs. Dijak, Ilja Dragunov vs. Ricochet, AJ Styles vs. Cody Rhodes, Gunther vs. Sheamus, only one of which (Styles vs Rhodes) received 5 stars. These were all high work-rate matches. The issue is, he has some very strong biases, which he just refuses to acknowledge. These biases include both style -- which is totally fair, people are allowed to have preferences -- but also in terms of companies he likes, and dislikes, which is just straight prejudice. I don't have any issue at all with a person who knows what they like, and is unapologetic about that. I like WWE's style of, largely, family friendly entertainment focussed shows. I like that I've been watching them for the last few years with my daughter since she was about 11, something I certainly couldn't say about AEW's product. I like the focus on story, and that we can talk and speculate about slow burn storylines across multiple weeks and PPV cycles (rather than just marking out over individual angles). I don't hide my bias. But I also don't pretend that a match like Ospreay vs. Takeshita at revolution, or Danielson vs. Ospreay at Dynasty are somehow objectively worse because they appeared on a promotion I don't care for, or that Page vs. Strickland at Full Gear is a "bad" match because it's a style I don't like (and was too gross and bloody for me, personally, to enjoy). The issue is, he refuses to acknowledge that his star ratings are not his personal, subjective preferences, rather than some kind of objective standard, and is then inconsistent in his ratings across different promotions, even when other promotions (specifically WWE) put on the kind of matches he claims to like and raves about in other promotions.

@@lukehb I 100% agree with you. I find it pretentious that he feels that his star ratings are objective and not subjective. But he rates matches on what the wrestlers do in the ring and the difficulty it took to do the moves. Also we all know why he’s bias towards AEW - it’s the style he basically paraded for decades brought to life by a billionaire’s son.

This! At some point, he seems to have forgotten that there is a world of difference between an angle, and a story. Drew vs. Punk vs. Seth has been a long term story, told over months. There is nuance, and running themes, and callbacks, and layers. Punk spends months criticizing Drew for focussing on him instead of the title, and it cost him, but then the match comes, and he proves he's just as petty and lacks focus. Seth has been the foil to both of them, at various points, and is forced to play the mediator, the literal referee, in their grudge match. He's actually able to put his own hate for both of them aside, and calls it fair, yet neither man is able to see that. There is family, and long term history, and past grudges all woven into the fabric of the match. It's building blocks for a feud that can grow, and develop, and run for a long time yet. And all of that elevates things above the specific moves and in ring back and forth. And yet, he misses all of that, and focusses on the wrong thing. It's like trying to rate a specific chapter of a book without looking at it in the context of the other 40 chapters in the book, or 12 books in the series! Or like saying "Fly" is a boring, pointless, bottle episode of Breaking Bad, because you've chosen to review it as a stand-alone episode without acknowledging its place within the wider context of the show. Sure, there are better stand alone matches, from a purely technical perspective. But arguing that the kind of angle's (really just excuses for those dream matches) that AEW has used recently result in the same level of investment in the broad fanbase, as these kinds of long term stories is so short sighted, and failing to factor in the wider context in his ratings certainly seems to be the reason people don't take him seriously at all any more.

I actually do too. They needed to go hard, fight all over the arena. They didn't even wrestle for the most part. Just over-acted over a bracelet.

Yeah, and in his review, he acted like Bayley was supposed to get 100% what's going on in 2 seconds. Bayley's reaction made total sense to me. Someone comes at you with a briefcase, how do you know the stipulations right then and there? You're in a middle of a fight, FFS! All reactions are heat of the moment.

Hell, look at Iyo vs Utami, he gave it a 4.75, when practically everyone else was considering one of if not the best ever women's matches in pro wrestling history

Because women's matches are boring and nobody cares. Stop looking at the booty shorts for 5 seconds and you'll realize they suck

At this point not many people take Dave’s ratings serious. It’s just worth reporting his ratings to laugh at him.

Cagematch is not the general audience. It's a 500-1000 member community that leans very hardcore.

The Cagematch audience and Dave are pretty even for this years Summerslam.

@@parsath_2584 the only people who use cagematch are the same people that care about Meltzer’s opinion, so they line up most of the time.

That's actually a very recent thing for the wrestling to be more important than the entertainment, and I'd actually argue that point on just how many other places value wrestling over story. Historically even in the territories they used stories to sell the matches. In WCW, story over wrestling. Japan is really the only place where wrestling has always trumped story.

Its just his opinion but because Dave Meltzer has been so influential in wrestling news people examine his star ratings. Honestly to a fault. Its just some dudes opinion, people shouldnt care as much as they do about it.
