A lot of people talking about the ‘spirit’ of the game as a coping mechanism for a spectacular lack of game awareness by a batsman who made a village grade blooper. The irony being Bairstow, and just about every other keeper in cricket history, has attempted the exact same thing. Bairstow embarrassed himself and the English cricket team have followed suit with their whinging.
Absolutely I remember Dean Jones being caught on a no ball v West Indies and walking as he hadn't heard the call and was run out. There was no outrage from Australia and captain Alan Border even said it was part of the game.

Bairstow can't be much of a keeper for England if he doesn't have an attitude of always wanting and trying to get the batter out , a quality Carey has in abundance. What a silly boy to walk out of his crease , this is eliminated from from your game in U12 cricket, but he's doing it in Test Cricket. The Aussies have done their homework on this bloke I'd think.
funny thing is, bairstow actually tried to get a wicket in the same exact was as carey... he tried multiple times against multiple different batsmen this test. he's just that junk of a glovemen that he missed the stumps.
If Carey's throw missed the stumps and it went to the boundary, it would be overthrows. I can assure you that England would not be asking the umpires to remove the runs from their score.

I'm an outsider, but what great Test matches. An affirmation of Test match cricket. I lived in London one summer before I understood the game, though I watched it, and in Sydney for a year and a half, including during England's Ashes Tour. I loved the Barmy Army, but England got thrashed. Would have loved to watch these Tests in their entirety, not just on ball by ball texts or highlights. Cricket is a better game than baseball under rule changes and analytics IMO. It's become boring. Cricket's nuance and stamina are amazing to watch over the long five day arc. No endless substitutions, virtually everyone plays a complete game. I hope they don't ruin it. Well done both sides.
Why the need to even critique baseball. It is obvious you do not realise the impact of baseball skills and techniques into the game of cricket especially since the inception of the T20 game. Baseball techniques and science started with Australian Captain and Coach Simpson in the 1960's and the employment of a former MLB coach as the Australian National Baeball coach and then Cricket Australia fielding coach is the very edivence of this. That coach has since been employed by the IPL, the BCCI and then the ECB. If you go and witness any warmups priot to most international cricket gmes you will see this but there is no way you will see the opposite.
But the real question is; as a neutral and someone relatively new to the game, what do you make of the Bairstow run out? Its divided opinions throughout the world
@@flamingfrancis Yeah and thats about the only aspect that Baseball has imparted on cricket I reckon apart from slogging in T20. Mike Young did improve our fielding and throwing but you have to remember the Chappells in particular Ian played a lot of Baseball as did Alan Border. They are two very different sports, Packers breakaway from tradition with the WSC caused a lot more professionalism and improved fitness levels to creep in to the sport. Having a durry and can of beer after a game at that level became a frowned on thing in Australian teams in the late 80's and gradually spread to other countries.Its fully professional now, even in park cricket the best teams take it very seriously. One club I know has gone teatotal which sucks after a game when you want a beer.
@@Fro19 Out, every day of the week. As for sportsmanship I wonder would Stokes have claimed the Labauschagne wicket if Bairstow had hit the stumps instead of missing on day 3? And perhaps Carey on seeing Bairstow attempting that took the chance against him because he actually attempted that. A side I played aginst once run an extra run after I fielded a ball and instead of returning it to the keeper and end the play threw it back to the bowler who missed the catch and it went behind him. I couldn't believe they did that at the time but its in the rules.

But my experience is crammed into one Ashes Tour in Australia plus the World Cup they won in South Africa. And I paid for another in the West Indies, watching from the US. Nasser was the captain of the Ashes Tour, and I think he's a great commentor. But I also got to hear a lot of Richie Benard. That said, compared to a cricket fan in a cricketing nation, I'm an amateur. Especially since I don't keep up with it like I do the World Cup in soccer. I've only met one guy in the US that liked cricket. An Indian working at a store. I'm also an Australian fan, so I'm only relatively neutral. So, to your question. I was convinced by two things. I thought the keeper caught the ball and launched it at the stumps in one motion. Which is supposedly basic cricket AFAIK. Also the umpires and the commentators (English, too) thought it was the correct call. So the question for me is how can something within the laws of the game, be outside the spirit. So much of cricket seems about nuances, and often the players aren't sure what happened. I think it's hard to know if they even know what happened, when they are arguing a call. I was in Australia during the chucking controversy, when Muri was challenging Warne's record. That was a little over my head. Did he cheat? Got me, but AFAIK his records still stand. All that said, I do prefer games that have an ethos or spirit. So pre-technology I think it was a great ethos when batsmen walked. Not sure I ever saw it, though. I'm just not sure in professional sports that exists. You'd know better than I whether it ever existed in cricket at the professional level. My reading cast doubt that it did. Writers have even questioned W. E. Grace. I don't know if that's true or just revisionist history. Another example, goalies come off their line during penalty shootouts. Though FIFA tried to crackdown on it. I was a keeper. I think it's cheating. When I play games myself, I want to play with people who do abide by the spirit. Winning isn't that important to me. For example, in tennis I've always tried to call the lines accurately. If I'm not sure, I give my opponent the point. Sometimes, however, I will call my own shot out if the opponent calls it in, when I have a better view. And they've returned the favor. The only examples I can think of in professional sports or games occurred in golf and chess. In golf, IIRC Jack Nicklaus conceded a short putt because of the spirit of the game. Sounds odd, and I forget the exact circumstances, but I think it was a British golfer in the UK. In chess, lots of players don't start their opponent's clocks immediately when their opponents are late. In another chess example, I knew an old guy who lost a game in 10 moves. He was a fairly strong player, just old, a died not long after. He apologized to his opponent for not giving him an interesting game. He loved the game so much, it wasn't the loss, but the inability to provide a competitive experience for his opponent. Neither England nor Australia have to worry about that in these matches.
Aussies thoroughly deserves to win this match. they batted, bowled in tougher conditions and lost their most important bowler with more than 2 days remaining, England showed great fight too but better side won the match.
Spirit of cricket means losing gracefully. Australia were the better team. England bowlers largely absent in first innings alllowed Australia to create a lead too big to chase. England top order swinging wildly against short ball instead of getting themselves in. That’s the reason England lost. Well played Australian , let’s hope the third year is as entertaining!
England won the toss, had the better conditions to bowl and bat in, and they didn't have to contend with arguably the best spinner in the world on a day five wicket. and they STILL lost. let that sink in.
Well are you sure that was the only reason why they lost ..nothing to do with winning in the toss with the ball swinging the whole day and only taking 4 wickets .. or the dropped catches .. or bern 181 for one in the first innings with Australia down a bowler ..
As an Englishman, even I would question Stuart Broad spouting on to Carey regarding the ‘Spirit of Cricket’. I seem to recall Broad in the 2013 Ashes series at Trent Bridge, standing his ground after he had clearly played a thick edge for a catch - he even admitted it later. Broad never short of gamesmanship himself.
Lord's last summer's NZ tour of England....double standard and short memory of the England players, media and supporters. "De Grandhomme’s run-out sparked a startling collapse from the Black Caps in their second innings. Coming to the crease after the dismissal of century-maker Daryl Mitchell with the tourists 251-5, de Grandhomme was struck on the pad by a delivery from Stuart Broad which prompted a loud lbw appeal. Umpire Rod Tucker ruled the NZ batter not out but de Grandhomme had left his crease as he looked to see what the decision was, and Ollie Pope quickly grabbed the ball which had run towards the slips and threw down the wickets at the batter’s end. De Grandhomme was out of his ground, with confirmation from the TV umpire, meaning NZ had lost two wickets in as many balls." England went on to win the test. So, Mr Stokes..why didn't you rescind that appeal???
Eoin Morgan (as an Aussie) is always honest. He doesn't let his emotions or patriotism get in the way of his comments. Some Sky guys do and the media in the UK are monsters to the Australia team.

The fact that Macullum and Stokes have fronted the media knowing that England has done the same thing to batsman and not recalled them is the real kick to the ‘spirit of the game’.
I think Jonny Bairstow's dismissal was fair because Alex Carey did not really wait for Bairstow to leave the crease 5 seconds after the over was completed, he almost immediately after collecting threw the ball towards the stumps like many wicketkeepers naturally do and also Jonny had been taking a few steps after every ball in that over before his dismissal ball so it was Johnny's casual approach that should be questioned not Alex Carey or Australia's who did not really have a plan that they will get him out like this.
I couldn't agree with you more. I loved every bit of this match. Sadly, my country is ruining the sport by creating worldwide windows for IPL which frankly is their cash cow and not a fair Cricket Tournament.
Spirit of Cricket wasn't there when Pope ran out DeGrandhomme last year vs NZ and it was Broad who was the bowler and most vociferous with the appeal. And don't compare it with run out at non striker end ( I won't call it Mankad, it's insulting to a legend), that's a different case as batsman gains undue advantage breaking the fable 'spirit of cricket' in the first place.
Completely different scenarios... DeGrandhomme runs out his crease looking for a run and while watching to see if the umpire gives him out is slow to return. He was run out while trying to run. Bairstow was run out while walking to the middle to chat with stokes at the end of the over, when both umpires have also started walking.
A better example is Bairstow actually trying it himself during this test. It's in the spirit of the game when Bairstow tries and fails but outside the spirit of the game when it's tried against him and works. Hypocritical stand by Baz and his Bazboys

Literally didn't see one comment from anyone English saying what happened yesterday was in the rules. English fans said it was out, English press said it was out and so did former English players. Some people have short memories. Both Bairstow and McCullum have done exactly the same thing while Broad refused to walk in 2013 after being caught at first slip.
it's not about the throw - Carey is well entitled to do that - it's about Cummins and his opportunity afterwards to decide whether they want to take a wicket that way or not. look at the Dhoni / Bell scenario. in both cases the batsmen could have been more careful, no doubt, but in both cases the opposing captains also had the opportunity to make it right. Dhoni showed true leadership, Cummins showed a greedy win-at-all-costs mentality that has turned a lot of people against him.
One of the all time classic test matches for sure. I see this and then look at India and how we are selecting players based on IPL shenanigans and then we expect to win against players like Mitchell Starc who give up IPL to play for Australia in the test matches. This is the true form of Cricket and how every Test Match should be played like. With a vengeance and a friendly rivalry.
India still made it to final of both WTC, and we have won test series in Australia and drawn one in England too recently while no team has beat india in india from 2012. As for both the final, opposition team clearly had an advantage in playing in England and we had little to no time to adjust for one of tests. It also baffles me how every WTC final is scheduled in England, if they schedule a final in India or for that matter anywhere in subcontinent India will win all of them without a doubt. But if anyone thinks India hasn’t done well in test cricket recently they are kidding themselves.
Many players, not just Indians, can learn a lot from Mitchell Starc by taking time away from franchise cricket to get himself right for internationals, especially Tests.

That point shouldn’t be overlooked. Add to that winning the toss and having favourable bowling conditions not only on day 1 but also when the Aussies batted again. England had opportunities to take the initiative, particularly at 188-1 in their first innings. The narrow margin of both results highlights that Australia won key moments rather than dominating whole days of the match and England will look at those moments that they could have taken advantage of. I don’t expect the remaining tests to be any different other than very close which England could easily come out on the right side of in the remainder of the series.
Salty English should be more annoyed at Bairstow for pure amateur carelessness, just like Aussies were told to be annoyed at Starc touching the ground with the ball rather than the decision itself! It was very clever play by Carey, he was switched on and Bairstow was sleeping, simple as that!
That is only your perception, he has done well in a few notable innings in the past few years which is in memory but he has got sub par scores throughout his career too.
Stokes has been awesome in some key games but if you look at his average it's far below what he should have scored. That's because he's allowed his ego to dictate his actions over the years. Moments like those in this Test are perfect for him because his ego tells him he's the man to do the job and he nearly did it but usually the wickets are much less benign and placid and his 'see ball hit ball' tactics aren't appropriate. Just the same as Glenn Maxwell who has more talent than every Australian on the Test team but too big an ego for the game.
I dont think there's a crack in england's method, it's easy to scrutinise Bazball, when in fact there's just a vast gap in the quality in england's squad vs australia's. our bowlers dont seem dangerous, and 7/11 of our batsmen seem clueless, not Bazball's fault. Dont forget australia are number 1 side in the world too.

Here are some very simple questions. If you go through the batting averages of the Australian players you will soon realised that we have a better batting line-up over a longer period of time not a short period of time if you look at the bowling stats England bowlers but that's because of Anderson and Broad if I was picking a team I would pick Australia's team over England's team any day of the week and over 5 days they have been the better team 2 Test matches in a row simply because they have better players in their squad that simple you can analyse all the other stuff Australia has more talent England relies on standout individual performance is like Joe root and Ben Stokes but they don't play as a team Ben Duckett was very good as well but I feel Australia win 5 nil
My predictions, Cummins comes out at Headingley, ends up facing constant chin action and ends up with no teeth and a bad headache. Out for series, first innings all out for 44. England bowl 501/1dec. Get Australia in again, Carey too scared to come out, Australia bowled out for 41. 4th test, Australia withdraw due to being scared of angry Mancunians. 5th Test, Ollie Robinson turns into prime Mitchell Johnson and tumbles a twenty wicket innings to take England to a deserved Ashes triumph!

This has been a great series so far. For once, Australians are wining the close games. I can recall so many series where Australia play pretty well in England, but either lose or get a draw when we were very close to winning. As for the Bairstow dismissal, if it is against the spirit of the game, you still can’t carry on like a goose and incite the crowd into a frenzy of hate like Broad did. He went on and in for an hour or so. How does he not get on the umpires’ report for that? The message we are sending is that you can be as abusive as you like, as long as we approve of your sense of injustice. It’s just as well the incident with the members didn’t become more serious. Abusing opposition players when you don’t like an umpiring call, as well as spectators verbally abusing and manhandling players is definitely not in the spirit of the game. The latter followed on directly from Broad’s behaviour. He effectively legitimised crowd abuse. He didn’t intend for that outcome, but we should make sure players don’t inadvertently cause a riot. Batsmen can get fined for glaring at the umpire after being given out , and a fielder for swearing after dropping a catch. I think the umpires should send a clear message that Broad’s behaviour will not be tolerated.
Yes, Edgbaston in 2005, Cardiff in 2009 and Trent Bridge in 2013 spring to mind. Valid comments about Broad. He seems to play up to his pantomime villain persona. At 36, should really expect one of the senior pros in the team to set a better example instead of acting like a petulant child. His behaviour over the years has crossed a line with little or no consequence. You’re spot on about the members. There wasn’t much of a distance in the long room as the Aussies walked through and it only takes one unhinged individual. I hope the match referee at Leeds has the foresight to pull both captains aside before the match and remind both sets of players of their responsibilities when crossing the boundary edge.

If Carey was keeping near the stumps as he does with spinners, would Bairstow walk out of his crease so quickly? No I don't think he would have, if he did he would have been stumped.

Nothing wrong with stumping. Check this run out in 1974 when Tony Greig threw down Kalicharran's stumps at the strikers end with the stumps pulled by Knott at the striker's end. The point was the umpire had not called play so he gave Kalicharran out. A riot nearly ensued and in the interest of the series the laws were circumvented and Kalicharran batted next day. But, he was out.
Pathetic medium pace by England is the big difference. So called pace bowlers bowling at 76-81 mph is rubbish at test match level! Without weather costing Australia a test this has 5-0 written all over it!

Lords dropping ticket prices to 25 quid just gives the drunken yobbos an incentive to come in, drink more and hurl abuse at the Australian's. English culture has a drinking problem...
I've seen Bairstow chucking at the stumps several times as an Aussie batsman ventured early from his crease. It's just that he's a lousy throw, that no umpire needed to rule on it. Anyway. A fantastic series. Drama. Passion. Noise.... and those Members at the Lord's Long Room as the Aussie players ran the gauntlet. Englishmen striven to the unbridled passion of the moment. Girded in a fury of righteous patriotism.... English Gentlemen girded in a fury of patriotism! Think of it! Never seen the likes of it. Fantastic stuff. Should be more of it. :)
They need to cut back on or ban certain types of booze at the Cricket. An ashes test at lords is not a night at the darts where you go and get hammered, too many drunks allowed in and too many drunks still served booze when they shouldn't have been....
There would be something very wrong with the universe if bazball wins an important Test series like Ashes for England, against this professional Australian side.Just not selecting Foakes as keeper cost them the first Test.
Both former red & white ball skippers blatantly said they would have done the same, it’s within the rules. Unfortunately too many (at the game or as viewers/listeners) have taken the moral high seat and thrown the spirit of the game card which is absurd in the modern professional game, I’ve seen this action taken in first class and club cricket. No one’s sending a negative message to juniors, it’s the game it has rules - you don’t rescind a yellow or red card in football or rugby cause oh that might be unfair, rules are rules both teams abide - Starc was sloppy so was Bairstow, lessons learned move on.
First test it was Ben Stokes early declarations and second test, Bairstow's carelessness rather unprofessional cost England to hand 2-0. Regardless, cricket is a sport and such acts do happened inadvertently because we saw Stokes going full gun blazing and this guy almost took his team home. England were in a winning positions in both tests but Australia is more balanced side and they deserve to win.
As an australian [ am hoping i see anderson take over the mantle of one of the greatest bowlers to ever play and the majority of the australian players wont be back here There will always be ups and downs and no matter who you support the ASHES to me will always be the greatest matches of all and that is no disrepect to the rest of the teams
