The conductor is really important. Sound travels much slower than light, so if everyone tried to stay in time with eachother just by listening to the others playing, it's going to get out of sync due to how far apart they sit in an orchestra. The speed of light is so fast that you rely on the conductor to help keep time
@riverhurdle8216

But do they actually look at him? I mean it seems like they only look at the note all the time tbh.
@ymw1107
@ymw1107 Год назад
@@riverhurdle8216of course they do. He's there to keep the tempo, the orchestra member occasionally would look up to the conductor to make sure they are at the right tempo and are thus in sync with each other. I'm speaking as someone that used to play in an orchestra.

@@riverhurdle8216I spent my entire life 8 to 23 years old in musical ensembles including full orchestras. I’ve been part of several honor bands. Yes, a conductor is absolutely the most important person in the ensemble. But not necessarily in the performance. The conductor is the director for 99% of the situation. Unless you’re performing with the musical composer present as well. In the actual performance, I conductor/director hopes that he did a good enough job during rehearsal that he doesn’t feel needed during the performance. During one of my honor band rehearsals, in high school, my ensemble was struggling with confidence for a piece. We became too dependent on specific queues from the conductor. So he made us play a section of the piece that he knew we could play. And he stopped conducting halfway through. It was to show us that he was not needed. And that we should have more confidence in our playing. There will also be a million tiny queues / deaths stares from a conductor that the audience will never pick up. We may be playing off tempo/ out of tune/ disjointed and it may not be super obvious to a non-musically trained audience member. But it’ll be obvious as hell to a judge at a music festival. Those subtle queues may be happening all the time, but it’s up to the ensemble to pick them up.
@megane5370
@megane5370 Год назад
They look both at the conductor and their music sheet As someone from a musical background we look up for cues/entrances, dynamics and tempo. If one just led with what's written on the sheet, it would be a mess especially in a hall that echos so much Edit: we tend to look at the conductor for a split second to make sure we're doing everything correctly, if you look at some of the musicians, you can see when some stop looking at the music and look at the conductor
@spymadmax584
@spymadmax584 Год назад
8:13 - conductor is really important in an orchestra. With one hand, he'll signal the beat, and with the other hand pointing at the certain parts of the orchestra (vilonists,vocalists,or pianists)to start, to increase or decrease their loudness, and making eye contact with literally every person of the orchestra, all doing while reading the sheet and turning it. They're really important, and that's exactly why we often don't see younger conductors because it takes a lot of experience to control an entire crowd of musicians to sound similarly in a certain set intervals.

8:12 A really good orchestra could technically play without a conductor in theory, but a conductor does provide a lot of advantage. That's because when you're playing an instrument, it's harder to keep track of what the other instruments are doing. And in an really big hall, there could even be sound delay, so a conductor can help keep everyone in synch.
@justremathings

8:10 - Glasses are made of crystal, when you wet a finger and gently circle their ridge the friction makes the crystal vibrate and resonate at a frequency; filling the glass more will result in a higher tone, whilst leaving it empty will give you the glass' natural frequency. So if you can fill up the glass to all the specific frequencies of the musical standard - 12 tone equal temperament, you make a pretty nice sounding instrument - the glass harp P.S. The glass harmonica works the same way but instead of water the crystal bowls vary in size

Yes the conductor is pretty much the heart of the entire piece. While they don't look a lot during the performance, before it they are the actual person who literally puts everything you hear together like Lego blocks into something that resembles something. When you see a single musical instrument played by one person, the conductor has to understand every single sound coming from an individual sitting on the stage from pacing to the beat to the queue of who enters at what time during the theme, this all happened before the actual song is finished and performed.

If you want to understand the role of conductors, you can see Aliciaxlife's (has a classical background) reaction to the Genshin 2021 concert at 11:55 - 14:00 where she breaks down what the conductor is communicating at that moment. The conductor is the person keeping the entire orchestra together: signaling everyone's roles such as when to bring in which group, when to end their turn, keeping everyone on time, how they play a part, and also tuning their volume.

2:45 Yes, the keyboard instrument, that resembles a current piano, is called a harpsichord; it was popular during the baroque era. What creates the difference in sounds between a piano and a harpsichord is that for a piano, hammers hit the strings inside the piano, creating the sound, while in a harpsichord, the strings are plucked. This is why while the piano is labeled a percussion instrument, the harpsichord is a string instrument. (If I'm not wrong)

The "Sherlock Holmes Piano" is a Harpsichord, effectively a precursor to the modern piano. The main reason the piano replaced the harpsichord was the increased volume potential of the former, which is ironic because in musical terminology the word 'piano' literally means 'soft' (The first pianos were called 'pianoforte', literally 'softstrong')

These live performances are actually showcases where the composers go wild because the BGM has to be more restrained in-game. If you listen to their counterparts in game they don't have the same sweeping and grand movements, but are rather short and atmospheric after all the bgm of genshin changes as the time of day in the game also changes, so the tracks have to be a bit same-y and have to blend seamlessly into each other.

But there are many other songs so you don't hear just these two all the time. I have never heard of game music live concerts before but I did some searching and found out that first such concert in the world was all the way back in 1987 and first outside Japan was in 2003 in Germany. Music from Final Fantasy series appears to have played big part in history of game music concerts but I still think Genshin is respectable contender in the field.

I'm not sure why or how, but Hoyoverse (Mihoyo back then), decide to just throw all their budget in their soundtrack, is like Saint Seiya, were they hire an entire orchestra for it, with unique songs and incredible scores, even for the movies. Or were you brought up on the thought that games were meant to be just silly and beepy and senseless and couldn't have proper music in them or shouldn't be taken serious, like I almost was? :V Since my mother is always confused at some of the music I listen to in previous times, especially when I just say that they're from a video game. So as far as the music pieces are concerned, the first one is the "main theme" of the region. It's used as a sort of building block for the rest of the music and leitmotifs in Fontaine. The second piece is one of the battle themes in the region, which there are quite a few of them in Fontaine between the above ground and underwater combat areas. As always Hoyo has managed to absolutely crush it with the music, and we're only one patch into the new region.

I can absolutely relate to what you said at 4:40 about this game. It wasn't the same for me, but prior to becoming a Genshin player I didn't really pay attention to videogame music, I mean i felt it was a nice little thing added to games, but I never considered that to be on par with "actual" music, as music that's composed to be listened on its own. With genshin, this changed. Hoyo-mix is really on a whole other level. To me, when I realized how great it is (and started following react channels like yours), it was musically the same as when Goku was in that little rock struggling against Jiren's rain of attacks, and then he starts attacking, opens his eyes and throws a devastating blow at Jiren's stomach and then creates an entire galaxy of ki. That's the same change of perception towards videogame music. That's how great Yu-Peng Chen and the guys at Hoyo-mix are. Anyway, the glasses are made of crystal, and the amount of water in them and the way you caress them produces different notes. I'm more amazed at how they managed to mic those, tbh. Never seen the other one, but it's not that they exhausted the instruments, it's just that they choose the ones that most fit the region, like how they used the shakuhachi, shamisen and hand drums for Inazuma (japan) and how they're using those for Fontaine, the nation of water.

Genshin has one song that uses a typewriter as an instrument. It's in the symphony performance even. Not sure which song it was though.

oh yeah. the waterglass is called glass harp. The "Italian" instrument is an accordian. And the " Sherlock holmes" piano is actually called Hapsichord. The guitar looking one is a mandolin (not sure) and the glass instrument in the second piece is a glass harmonica

Strings in a concert piano are tightened to about 90 kg, on average. With 236 strings, the wooden structure needs to comfortably withstand over 21 metric tons of inward pressure. More than 12,000 parts made of various types of wood, metal, cloth, and plastic have to be made and assembled by hand. Professional pianos can cost $200,000.

A fun fact: Genshin's main composer for the first 4 regions (Yu Peng Chen) has resigned somewhere before Fontaine's release, and this region's music is entirely handled by Dimeng Yuan and his team. I was first doubting if the new composer can make music up to previous regions' standard, but I have to say I'm thoroughly pleased.

2:50 that's a harpsichord. It's a VERY old piano with fewer notes than a piano and a distinct sound. I believe it was used during the baroque period although I'm not 100% sure. Please do correct me if I'm wrong (and sorry for my bad English)

Most of the other comments have pretty much gotten the gist of it, but I'll put most of the answers to your questions here: The conductor is very important. Without the conductor, the whole symphony gets out of sync and starts to sound fuddled. The instruments: Wine glasses (you wet your hands and then trace the outer edge of the glasses), Glass Harmonica (similar concept, VERY fragile), the box with lots of buttons is an Accordian (a mainstay in Europe), that particularly shaped piano is what is known as a Grand Piano (you open the cover to help project the sound, close it for a more muffled performance), there is also Acoustic Guitar, I think I saw a Pipe Organ and a Piccolo in there, and probably a couple of others I didn't recognize. The first song is basically a collective of Fontaine's main themes you may hear in the city or in similar situations. The second song is one of the battle themes that may play while roaming and fighting in Fontaine. A lot of work gets put into performances like these, especially when they involve some of the more exotic instruments. It's hard to get all that sound to blend together, but when it does, it *always* creates a one-of-a-kind experience for the listeners. I hope this helps.

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love Genshin music! But what annoys me is that you (either from ignorance or biases) make it sound like most games don't make incredible music aside from Genshin. This hurts me specifically since I actually consider games to big one of the biggest things that pushes out incredible music. Tons of games make incredible, high quality music nowadays, not just Genshin.

Yes, the glasses are used for music. And you never watched the whole first concert, right? There is a typewriter being used for music. So, yeah, Genshin music makes you more knowledgable in that area as well. XD

Idk if it’s the same for an orchestra, but at least with chorus, I usually end up being sorta entranced by whatever I’m singing and space out while performing. Thus, our conductor is super helpful because when I look over at him it reminds me to stay focused and keeps me on the right track. We memorize different little movements he does as well at complicated parts so we can stay in sync. Idk.

Yeah, because of the livestream where they showed this off I learned that the glasses with water is actually called a Glass Harp when referring to it as an instrument! Also that side-ways pot making instrument :D you were asking about is apparently called a Glass Harmonica. It also uses water to produce sound so that's why they chose to include it in the music for Fontaine (the nation of hydro). Oh and HYV have announced a live concert tour. One of the locations is London, however I have no idea when tickets will start selling.

Hoyoverse is one of those game company that went all out with their ost. You'll not be disappointed by their music ever, hoyomix always deliver For Instruments, the glasses that filled with water use special glass so it won't easily crack. I forgot the name, probably glass harp. Same with the "vase sideways" it's called glass harmonica. The player of the instrument has to wet their hands periodically so it'll produce sound What music? First one is the main theme of Fontaine. You'll hear it a lot in the region while also hear ost with similar sound to it (leitmotif ayy). Second one is battle theme. Everytime you encounter an enemy, you'll hear that ost, but there's 3 different battle ost so you won't hear one battle ost constantly. Conductor is important, they're the timing for the whole orchestra. They're the one who keep everyone in check pretty much

Those glasses have to be made of crystal to make the right sound, I believe, and it looks like they have the Genshin 'hydro' elemental symbol on them, so they were probably made just for this.... So that's where the whales money goes (as if I'm not at least a beluga....)

what you are feelibng in quite genuin and normal. This piece of music especially the second piece was doing what it was supoosed to make you feel. It didn't want you to feel all upobeat and allk over the place. It was supposed to give you awe, tension due to some parts, and a sense of focus and movements. When i first listened to this i was feeling what you was feeling and when i watch this i still get that feeling. Im in aband so i have experiece with music and how music can cause you to feel different emotions and reaction. Ther condiuctor is one of the most important people in the entire orchestra. Hes there to mainly keep everyone in time but then he does all these facial reaction and different type of music he does these thins to cue certain parts of the orchestra where they have something important or loud in a certain pert. This just lets they know and toprepare for that part. Yes some bands dont need a conductor because they have learned how to keep time independalty and by listening to other people. They bands mostly priobabaly have a drum set or some type of percussion that will play parts in the song to kee them in time and to follow the beat with them, so they basically are the conductor of thjat band and they because important. Sorry i know some of you priabbyl know these things but im kinda high and typing this really calms my brain but for the people that don't know i hope i helped you better understand some these if you have the same reaction and feelings. Everyone have a very good night and have a very wonderful next day and that goes towards you G. O. T. I love watching your vieos and i have you have a very good next day!

You asked how the glass thing works, so heres a hopefully understandable explanation : Everything can swing in a way, like any body of glass can when you stimulate it to do so via a little touch or blowing through it. The motion of your hand or the air gets carried into the glass and the glass begins to vibrate with a set frequency, with it being most noticeable and loud when you stimulate it to its resonance frequency where it kinda can keep going on its own for a short time. When you put water into a glass it gets stimulated by the glass‘s vibration to vibrate too, but it vibrates less and since its in direct contact with the glass it dampens the vibration of the glass to a lower frequency, and the more water in the glass the bigger its effect. Now you only gotta figure out which water level corresponds in sound frequency to each note and need to be able to make the glass resonate and you’re done!

When you walk around the region day or night, the music changes, sometimes there is one theme in the city, and another in the countryside or in a building where you can go. The world bosses have music playing during the battle, just in the world, a battle theme is turned on in any battle.
