Hey everyone! Thanks for the support on the video so far 💜 Lots of comments about what I should be listening to, this is the casual reminder that RU-vid Members get to suggest the themes for each video!! (Casual money plug cause I got bills to pay) xo
The real reason people are suggesting is primarily because although I loved the video I myself was immensely confused when things like Greenpath played And- things like nightmare king wasn't played despite literally being the most popular hollow knight song People who really know hollow knight likely would feel robbed from seeing that the actual popular songs weren't included hence the high amount of recommendations
"I really hope any in-game sounds match with the music," she says, while listening to White Palace. The answer is yes, for literally everything except White Palace. I love this reaction so much!
It breaks my heart when folks put together a Hollow Knight OST reaction tracklist and leave out Greenpath or Soul Sanctum. You've done this poor woman a great disservice. 😢
That "Birthplace" track gets leitmotifed into the "Sealed Vessel" track, and it absolutely brings me to tears every time. Especially when you know the story about WHY it's there, and what's happening in the fight when it comes in.
In this game, Light is the enemy, and Darkness is the Hero. It's a wonderful spin on the ideas of light and dark, and I think it's shown perfectly in this OST.
Light is death in this Game but darkness isn't life, at least not traditionally. You are there and exist but there's nothing within you. No will, no dreams, no love, nothing. Just a void.
It's so cool, 'cause it's not just twisted, but also very complicated. Pale King wasn't really the bad guy and so the Radience. With the radience I think its? revenge went a little far, but it just wanted people to worship it as a higher being. Then there's the darkness, who's definitely not the good thing either.
@@freakda96Light and Darkness have drastically different orchestrators of its power. The intention of the orchestrator/s determines its morality. Despite the theme of the story, the grand powers displayed wether it be light or dark are dependent on the controllers whim. And well, regarding wether the children have no feelings or not is rooted in what we were told, and not what we feel or see. I think HK is more advanced then a story that has darkness as the hero. Its sooo much more complicated. Regardless, darkness vs light is done phenomenally here.
Is there gonna be a part 2? Cause trust me when I say, there's very good themes that were sadly missed here. Grimm's theme, nightmare King, pure vessel, any of the other boss themes. I do still hope at one point we can vote on which tracks are listened to, or at least suggest
@gabern07yt97 I don't think so, cause i feel like someone would have voted for.the Grimm things Which are the most popular hollow knight themes by a very long shot
First of all, this needs a part 2. Hornet, The sealed vessel and Nightmare kings are MUST! Second, Christopher Larkin is amazing! But so is Leina Raine who did Celeste OST. Check this one out too!
It's funny that you mention that there's no use of synths or anything modern. In fact, this entire OST was produced electronically. No actual instruments were used, just really good patches. I'm all for a part 2! You NEED to hear some of these boss themes. Also this is the first OST I listened to before actually having played the game.
That “choir” in the city of tears actually starts with one of the characters singing! She sings beautifully, you should react to her if you do part two
woah someone reacted to not just the boss themes, though i would love a full reaction video to like the 15 boss themes in the game lol, they’re all incredible
The white palace part cracks me up. The calming music accompanied by the video of the knight staring at moving buzzsaws. What thoughts are going through it's little mind?
Christopher Larkin is a musical genius I swear. And live instrument sounds fit hollow knight’s vibe so much better than synths and beep boops. It’s still midi, but the sounds used are all live instruments.
So thematically the game is centred around three musical themes. The first is the vessel theme, heard in the title theme "Hollow Knight" but also in "False Knight", "Broken Vessel", and "Sealed Vessel". It also pops in at various points in the area themes ("greenpath", "fungal wastes", and others) The birthplace music is basically a torture sequence using an incomplete statement of the vessel theme. The second important theme is that if the Pale King. It is the main nelody of "White Palace" heard in its simplest form in "The White Lady" but also appears modified as Hornet's theme (Hornet & Daughter if Hallownest) The final theme is the Dream theme which is heard in "Dream" and quite often in "Radiance". I suspect it also form the basis of "City of Tears" and "Soul Sanctum" At heart the story is a battle for supremacy between these three themes. At the very end of the track Sealed Vessel you will hear the post Radiance fight ending music which includes a statement of the vessel and king's themes celebrating their victory before finally the vessel theme is given a final resolution as the vessels are finally allowed to rest.
Larkin is a genius. While Hollow Knight is one of the greatest gaming experiences ever made, it is Larkin's brilliant score that brings the world to life.
Honestly, I loved your reactions. The stunned silence is entirely appropriate. And there is a lot more musical variety available in the Hollow Knight soundtrack. Primarily, you listened to the area themes, which are utterly fantastic, but tend to focus on the melancholy ambiance that permeates the whole game. The boss themes, however, tend to have a lot more variation. Christopher Larkin manages to demonstrate a ridiculous mastery of musical genres, including some you wouldn't think would belong together.
Ive loved this series so far, so many games have such good ost. To bring up my suggestion again, I still think that Miitopia would be right up your alley. It's bright and energetic, yet can have themes that make you say "this is from a mii game?!" It's great, I highly recommend it
This isn't the main version of City of Tears found in the game. The main version features prominent soprano vocals. This is a very nice version too. Might be a secondary version or a remake.
I'm surprised how few of the boss themes are here. Especially the lack of Nightmare King. As beautiful as the area themes are, it would have been great if you got to hear more variety in what the soundtrack has to offer.
Tbh i'm good with that, most people go for bosses themes but for me the core of the ost it's the background ambient themes, despite the boss themes being more popular
@@diegosotomiranda4107 Oh I absolutely agree that the area themes are some of the best, I was more talking about how the boss themes bring a little more variety.
Possibly hot take: Nightmare King isn’t as good as Grimm Troupe. Grimm Troupe has an amazing and unique sound, a cool progression, and an extremely memorable melody. Nightmare King is just loud music. Good, but nothing spectacular.
I agree with the general concensus of the comments: you owe it to yourself to do a part 2 focused on the many excellent boss themes the game is known for. A couple I'll mention that I haven't seen yet are Dung Defender and Sealed Vessel
The Birthplace song takes place during a dream sequence where you climb up the abyss the main character was born in. The song reaches new stages as you progressively climb out of that birthplace.
A lot of these pieces literally made us stay in awe and silence, and just try to listen to them carefully not wanting to miss a single note. I had to stop playing so many times, and just enjoy listening. Its madly good. PS: At least half of the amazing songs from the ost are missing here btw. Might need another video, this ost is simply too good. Its actually like you listened to only 1/3 of this insanely amazing ost ! Just do the whole thing, I assure you, you will get a hell lot of views. You'll love it as most of us did!
Hollow Knight is one of the few games that I consider a work of art. Everything in the game is so atmospheric, it just brings you into a world that's nothing short of haunting, sad, and beautiful.
Great video! In contrast to what some people are saying, I think you had a great mix of boss themes and ambient music - it gives you a good taste of everything the game can be!
This is definitely my favourite OST of all time. I loved the game, completely lost myself in it during the pandemic and listening to this always gets right into my heart with all it's melancholy
in the case of birthplace, it's basically a theme with a bunch of layer stacked on top of each other, and the further you go, the more layers join in. the video you watched played all the layers separately. for example, in the game, it starts with the choir, and then the violin joins in. but you heard them both separately. also, there's two different versions of the theme, and what you heard was like a compilation of each bit of both of them, separately instead of together. so, in the game it's much more gradual, it's not as cut-up in the game.
Oh you noticing how empty the song for Kingdom's Edge feels is so perfect because the entire area is characterized by all the various types of corpses that inhabit it
A reaction can be shown without words, just like you said. You’ve reacted amazingly and I would’ve sat there in complete silence and awe, had I been filming a reaction video LOL
Christopher Larkin is a musical GENIUS! And I highly recommend playing this game. With it's sequel, Silksong, around the corner, it's the perfect time to jump in and play it!
If this is the kind of OST you’re into, I suspect you’d enjoy many tracks from the OST of Nier: Automata. And don’t worry, shock and awe are completely normal reactions to music like this 🙃
I love how you're getting a good gist of the overall story of the game just from what the game tells you. In a lot of ways, the game gives you exactly the same amount of info on the story as the music does
Fantastic. This game is such a gem. The atmosphere is so serene and desolate (while somehow also being menacing and dangerous), and the music compliments the art style. It's really astonishing what Team Cherry accomplished with such a small team. I could gush more about it, but I do not want to spoil you if you ever choose to pick it up and play it yourself. It's absolutely worth it.
Hollow Knight is a game that really does a whole lot with the musical themes... The theme 'The Sealed Vessel' is one that honestly sticks with ya when you know where it plays and the phases contained therein!
The fact that you did a video on hollow knight without listening to sealed vessel is criminal. Easily the most amazing piece in the soundtrack and one that really helps set a picture for the whole game as well.
You gotta do another Hollow Knight video for boss themes. Hornet, Mantis Lords, Broken Vessel, Sealed Vessel, The Grimm Troupe, and Sisters of Battle are all so good
Please please PLEASE do a part two of this video! The entire soundtrack is absolutely incredible. Hornet is my favorite piece, amazing boss theme. The White Palace required me to turn down the game sound effects so there wasn't the constant buzzing of saws in my ears but that's the only area where the sound effects clash with the music. Considering you'll probably be in the White Palace a while, the tranquil music helps mitigate the frustration from the sudden difficulty spike. One of my favorite games ever, please consider giving it a chance
So many good themes couldnt capture them all! Also we didn't have a still loop for Nightmare King unfortunately which i felt would take away from the vid so changed the concept to more of a story from general exploration to the mood change of birthplace into Radiance :D
@@Cursed394 Nightmare King is so long anyway (5 minutes) so a loop is unnecessary imo But even if that weren’t the case, Grimm also exists Edit: Nightmare King actually does have a loop, it’s just built in to the main song
Oh yeah, I'm always down for more hollow knight! 😁 In this video you mosty reacted to area themes. They are all really good ofc but I would highly suggest listening to more combat music, especially containing the main hollow knight motif ( you should hear it to have a comparison ). This includes "broken vessel", "sealed vessel" ( the most important one ) and there's a hint of it in "false knight". There are also other bangers like "grimm", "hornet", "dung defender", "crystal peak", "nosk", "hive knight" and "soul sanctum" The story in this game is tragic, it's all about a fallen kingdom, where a sacrifice was made to fix everything but it eventually failed. As you said, the music is pretty melancholic and emotional. I don't want to tell you too much more because it's worth experiencing yourself 👍 The game is a metroidvania, meaning it has a big world to explore, that's full of intriguing characters, challangeing bossfights and beautiful areas. You obtain new abilities that allow you to reach other areas and help you in combat and you can find different items called charms that give you other benefits like healing faster and dealing more damage. Btw hollow knight is pretty hard so if you would ever want to start a playthrough you should be prepared lol The game is so beloved that the devs created several free dlcs ( which technically worked as updates ) and are soon to release a sequel called "hollow knight: silksong". You will be exploring a new world as an important character that first appeared in the original. We all are really excited for it :) Ps since you recently heard the undertale ost, you should also later see deltarune's music. It's a game made by the same person which takes place in a similiar universe but has a very different story, new characters and themes. The game is devided into chapters and currently only 2/7 are out but they are already incredible 😎
14:04 No, your character is completely mute. The sound design of White Palace is, however, marred by a certain quantity of circular saw. 18:48: "Was our little dude born alone?" Very much not, but also very yes.
You were born here, but you were not the first. You lived here, but it was not home. The ground is blanketed with the corpses of those who came before, their void-borne essences restless, without purpose, without peace, they suffer in silence, the price of a king who cared too much.
hollow knight's music is entirely STUNNING. fully recommend you listening to more boss battle themes and try to count how many of them are strings-only! there's actually a very fun link between the few that use it that can be used in theory crafting
I would also recommend to you the OST of both Ori games (Ori and the blind forrest & Ori and the will of the wisps). It is really emotional and beautifull and really underlines specific scenes perfectly :)
No cost too great. No mind to think. No will to break. No voice to cry suffering. Born of god and void. You shall seal the blinding light that plagues their dreams. You are the vessel. You are the hollow knight.
it's such a beautiful soundtrack, I really hope you do a part 2 since you didn't get to any of my three favorite tracks, sealed vessel, pale court, or nightmare king grimm
Whoever made this playlist for you chose to spare you from listening to some of the best that this game has to offer. Although you cannot go wrong with any track from this soundtrack, but you still have many of the best tracks to look forward to.
I suggest looking up the official soundtrack version of City of Tears to get the piano. It’s so beautiful. Heck there’s probably a number of the official soundtrack songs that are definitely worth a second video. Including Hornet and Sealed Vessel
It's worth noting that on the official soundtrack, all of these songs have proper endings, and any songs with variations are carefully woven together. Listening like this doesn't take away much, and having the little scenes of the game is nice, but you are technically missing something.
Queens Station is absolutely HAUNTING, a character in the game says that you can still hear the Stag bells chiming, faintly; and he’s RIGHT! They are literally baked into the soundtrack, the faint barely audible ring of bells, letting the ghosts know it’s time to move on.
I think the White Palace OST triggers when you take a certain path and it's like path to king's memories or secrets so I'm guessing the OST reflects his emotions or his glory idk. also for the boss battle and some of the OST, it triggers when you get to certain stage of boss fight and if you don't, it just repeats last OST part. white palace OST is also one of my favorite one because a lot of emotions are attached to it after finding out all the secrets and lore and mystery.
The birthplace was like, you born with you a thousands siblings but you are the only survivor. You came back you your birthplace, standing on the body of all your dead siblings and staring into the giant black egg that you born from
This is one of 3 games I've ever bought based solely on the soundtrack. Didn't know anything about the game other than the soundtrack was Amazing. Bastion and Crypt of the Necrodancer are the other two.
PLEASE do Terraria! It has such a fantastic OST, just some good ones I can think of at the top of my head: -Overworld -Underground -Crimson -Corruption -Hallow -Jungle -Sandstorm -Pretty much all the boss themes -Frost and Pumpkin moons -Solar Eclipse -Martian Madness I’m sure there’s a ton of games you want to listen to, but I promise you won’t regret Terraria!
You should listen to the official/original soundtrack. I think nothing beats it. Its really an experience like nothing else. Christopher Larkin made a truly remarkable masterpiece of a soundtrack. If I were to recommend any, my top 5 would probably be: Hornet Mantis Lords Sealed Vessel Radiance Reflection Edit: City of Tears, Enter Hallownest and Hollow Knight also.
It's always a pleasure to see people react to music, specially for OST 's that are music revolving around the narrative and theme of the game I would love to see your reaction to some of the Splatoon soundtrack, it's surprisingly varied and really interesting to listen how it changes between 1, 2 & 3, even the main themes such as Splatattack, Now or never, and of course, the heavenly melody, Calamari Inkantation
