The best part about modern hip hop is the diversity. There's more rap music coming out now than ever and more subgenres than ever before. People who hate on modern hip hop or modern music, in general, have probably only heard a few current artists if they didn't find anyone they liked.

I think it’s unfair to put someone like Eminem out of a top 10 list because of catalog and still put Biggie in a higher spot when he has such a small catalog comparably. Who knows what Biggie would have been putting out 10,15 or even 20 years after his death? I feel like all have to be judged on their best projects and compared that way.

I’m the biggest Kanye fan but I totally agree with the rapping take. When you listen to his verses on his first albums, the world play, the personality, the message, all of it is completely perfect. In his recent stuff sure thematically it’s interesting(in terms of the death of his mother, religion and such) but there’s nothing whatsoever that stands out about his bars! The production is wonderful as always but I feel like he’s losing his way a little bit which pains me because he’s one of the greatest artists of all time imo.
@CaelanDafydd
@CaelanDafydd 2 года назад
I think the biggest problem is his flow. He used to really find his groove on the beat, thinking of songs like Flashing Lights, Heard Em Say & Gorgeous where he sounds great regardless of the bars Compare that to his flow on Hurricane, Eazy, Violent Crimes where he comes off as really stale He's my favourite artist of all time, so I feel like you. At this point I'd rather see him curate, produce, sing and only spit bars rarely when he has something fire to say & is pumped up to do it

My thoughts on every take 1 - I judge artist through consistency, songs, albums, impact/influence, and skill. Eminem is inconsistent, has great songs, solid albums, massive impact, and a lot of skill so i might have him in top 10 but i can see why someone wont 2 - Kendrick is top 5 all time he's amazing in every category 3 - Kanye shows crazy good rapping at moments but it's not something he focuses on a lot of the time 4. Terrible take. People like this priase artist like Lou Reed/The Velvet Underground when they talk about overdosing on herion and prostitutes but god forbid a rapper talks about not being poor anymore. 5 - Half true. Music as a whole is very competitive and that's what makes it fun. 6 - I'm sure this person would love new gen rap if he actual found what he likes as there is so much different types of rap being made in the mainstream and underground. 7 - I hated Thug originally as well can't blame this guy his opinion would probably change after time

enjoyability, hits, and voice are what hurt him. 90% of k dots music is thought provoking and doesn’t have much bangers. with few exceptions from damn n gkmc and maybe 2 songs from tpab. it’s what makes him amazing but it’s also what makes him an acquired taste. if he had more hits like maad city, alright, humble, dna, king kunta, swimming pools, or xxx he would be an easier listen while still creating thought provoking music. he’s still top 10-11. he’ll def be top 5 when it’s all said and done.

In response to the point about Kanye’s singing at 5:04 I’d actually argue that Kanye’s singing being as off key and rough as it is makes it better. Songs like 24 and ghost town wouldn’t hit nearly as much if Kanye’s vocals were completely clean. Whenever he sings i feel like you can hear the soul and emotion in it.

I think hip hop has become the most versatile genre. You can have a raw lyricist built album or you can have a Tyler the creator type album where productions and sounds are a big factor in the music. I don’t see any other genre bending the rules to the extent that hip hop does.

I feel like Hip Hop is mainly rivaled by Folk in dynamic storytelling and overall songwriting ability. Both are not always based on technique of vocal range but mostly the emotional deliver and the way it sets a tone. When highlighted both can bring you somewhere. Hip Hop is a bit more layered with hidden complex themes that are more culturally enriched with insider terms. Folk however feels more closer to a novelist showcasing his sense of surrounding and building to an overall ending like a story whereas hip hop often feels like multiple stories in one song like a book of short stories. When done right both are amazing.

1: I would personally put Eminem in my top five favourites and best rappers of all time. That being said with his significant drop in quality recently and a whole host of less mainstream rappers who are equally good I could understand him not being in a top 10 list, at least if it’s not out of fanboying or hate for him. 2: Kendrick is the best modern rapper by far, I could see for why someone would put him in the top 5 and he’s definitely top 10 (15 if you’re being picky) but I wouldn’t agree with anything above number 4. I don’t have a particularly good reason though, just I feel that the top three are still above him for some reason, feel free to prove me wrong. 3: I don’t listen to any of Kanyes stuff, no real reason I’ve just never bothered so I can’t make a judgment. 4: 4ish years ago I kept hearing mumble rap or crap UK drill on BBC radio, and I thought that was the whole genre so I never listened to it but then I heard my dads Jurassic 5 album and was holy shit that’s great what genre is this, looked it up. Hip hop. Listened to all their songs decided I liked it. Eventually got into more and more stuff and here I am with a 53 hour hip hop playlist. So I can understand why this guy thinks that rap is shit, because he’s probably just heard the same shit I heard on the radio and none of the good stuff knowing it was hip hop. 5: I agree that people take it way to far in the competitive stuff ( that’s right I’m looking at you Eminem fanboys) but if it’s just oh I prefer x rapper for this reason and it’s just a friendly debate or a serious objective talk that can be really fun, and, like you say, almost like a sport. 6: I can heavily relate to the modern rap stuff, I’m very picky with new stuff, i litterally only listen to KL, J Cole, Lil Simz, Denzel curry and a small bit of lil Wayne from the new gen but LOADS of older stuff, it’s just a matter of preference. 7: Don’t listen to any of thugs stuff so I can’t comment.

Saying ‘Modern Rap’ and throwing it all in one big box is crazy to me. In the 90s rap music was fairly new and was strictly bars over beats and it took slow baby steps to even get to that point from where it began in the 70s, because it was brand new and the internet that we have today wasn’t a thing. Obviously when the internet did start coming into play hip-hop began to evolve at a much quicker rate. Hip-Hop evolves year after year. Sometimes it seems like all it takes is one big moment to shift the culture. It can all happen so fast now. It’s crazy to me when people say they only like rap music that came out of the 90s… 30 years later it’s become so big that there are sub genres within the hip-hop umbrella. At the end of the day you simply just need to know what you’re looking for because it’s all out there. It’s just on you to find it. For me I listen to the spitters. Tbh I think it’s as good as it’s ever been if not better in my personal opinion. I don’t fuck with the Carti’s, Uzi’s, Yachty, Trippie etc. but I think it’s super dope that all of that exists for the people who actually do love that. If you don’t like a certain type of hip-hop then that’s fine cause there are so many other sections of the genre that you can explore.

False (obviously) - Except the part about b*tches and h*es (and other lyrics with negative messages). 5. True - It should all be in good fun, not a personal attack on someone, which is too common. 6. True 7. True

brooklynbluenotes is absolutely right. I have never in my life seen a more ranking based genre. Everyone compares everyone, sales, lyrically and people that aint even trying to do the same. It can bring out the best in artists though, i think their is a good side to it too.

9:30 - in reference to your point about hip-hop not really having another genre that weighs as "competitive" or "analyzed," I would counter-argue (respectfully of course) that the mentality is also apparent in a lot of metal circles - debating topics like whether or not 60s and 70s hard rock count as metal, when Metallica fell off, the relevance of volume or output when it comes to live shows, and more, are all discussions you'll see repeated on a wide number of metal music forums.

Addressing the “hip hop fans are obsessed with tier lists” I think this is a stupid take, not because it’s extremely false but because it isn’t saying anything, like what are they even arguing? That music isn’t a competition, but that’s not necessarily what making tier lists is about, it’s more about providing your opinion and talking about what you like and asking the community to talk about what they like. Isn’t that how music conversation goes? People talking about their opinions on it? Idk it seems like a really stupid thing to say, like most fans from different genres like to hear what others think about music, it’s just conversation

I think many people who don‘t feel modern rap fits the standards of old hip hop, when you think of old hip hop you think of Tupac and Biggie and Jay Z. Now you may think of mainstream rappers or pop rap such as Lil Mosey or Lil Baby, etc. instead of thinking about Kendrick, Cole, JID, Denzel, Saba, etc. These takes are just not educated.

I like how they are genuine...it doesn't seem like they're being paid by labels to align with certain artists on albums...There are a lot of "review" channels that are backed to either detract from decent work or prop up mediocrity...so far....it doesn't seem like NFR is in that lane and I think that is a business model for long term success

In my opinion no one should be questioning modern rap. While storytelling isn’t as prevalent as it used to be, the rap game has only gotten more and more diverse and experimental, and nowadays I feel that in general rappers focus on every part of the song, as opposed to just honing In on lyricism

I think there are two ways to make a great track: be in innovative under the content pov, be innovative under the form pov. Usually we don't have just one of them, it's a sort of mix BUT in Young Thug case I can understand the lack of content in many cases but he's been such an innovation in the rap scenario that it's the form that has become the content itself. I dunno if I explicited my idea in the best way but I tried my best :)

Em's top 10 still. I would say after MMLP2 he was top 5, his catalog was just that good at that point and obviously his lyricism is unmatched. But because of his recent releases i'd say he's fallen to that bottom half of th top 10. But there's no way he's not top 10

How do you define lyricism. I've always felt Eminem was overrated because his subject matter is terrible most of the time and he has some of the corniest bars of all time. Hi Highs and low lows. Plus Lyrical miracle rhyming doesn't impress me. I prefer poetic thought out lyricism with literary devices used effectively

The issue with the statement 90’s rap is better” coming from people who didn’t grow up in the 90’s (and this is just my perspective) is that the comparison is unfair. Nowadays you are always exposed to the popular, mainstream shit like trap music which just may not resonate with you, whereas because you didn’t grow up in the 90’s you have the option to completely ignore the existence of bad rappers from that time that were popular (bird man, insane clown posse, vanilla ice to name a few) and only listen to all time classics and greats. There are plenty of artists nowadays and plenty of albums today that will one day be looked at the same way things like ready to die are looked at. But it’s far easier to listen to classics and say you like old school rap compared to todays “trash” when we have artists and albums this century that rival the quality of a lot of albums and artists that were about in the 90’s.
