I was recently reminded of a video I made in 2015 about how I made videos back then, and I thought it would really interesting to react to it and reanswer those questions because that was 8 YEARS AGO (how??) and things have changed! For instance: I’m in a studio now! I have a producer! I hate watching old videos of myself but I’m doing it for you 😂 If you’re watching this now, were you watching me back then? I find it funny that some things on youtube seemed simpler then (shorter videos, less editing) and other things seemed so artificial. Everyone wore so much makeup, the edits were kitschy. The videos feel simpler now I think

This isn't related too much to the video, but making the decision for us to see your "normal" face without make up is something that made me feel so much more comfortable not wearing make up myself on a day to day basis x

I think it's crazy that our natural faces are considered unprofessional or unkempt. I realized the more I wore makeup the more self conscious I became about my face especially if there was a spot or two. I like my face better without makeup and I hope women can eventually take their faces back.

I kinda had that fear since I was a girl and girls around me started wearing makeup. I was scared of using it too much and like my face more with than without. So I only had it on for like extra special occasions and at some point it didn't feel worth it cause my products would expire or go bad after like 3 uses, so I stopped completely. And now at 26 I cannot imagine a scenario where I would wear any makeup. And if someone had a problem with that, I'd challenge them

Totally agree. I'm glad more youtubers are starting to show their "bare" faces. As a woman who very rarely wears make up, it's only in the last year or so that I've realised that I'm not significantly less attractive than 90% of women, I just don't wear makeup.

It's so funny to hear how professional of a production company you've become! You're laughing at how quick you worked in 2015 but then it was just random people making some videos in their bedroom, like you did! I LOVE the decision to keep your 'normal' face in videos. It makes a difference so thank you! I wear very little makeup in my videos but it's still enough to get the 'you look sick/tired' comments if I don't wear any. It's not enough make-up to stop the 'you'd be pretty with makeup' comments though!! 😂😂

I love the point you made about makeup. I used to work in a corporate role and wore a full face every single day. When I saw myself without, I would have this instant 'ugh!' reaction. It's so easy to stop being familiar with what you really look like, especially with social media filters being so tempting to use. I now work in a fully remote role and stopped bothering, since no one was going to see me anyway. I still wear makeup on weekends and special occasions etc, but this has given me a much healthier relationship with my appearance.

I can’t believe videos used to be 3-5 mins long. My favourite length for videos now is about 30 minutes because I feel like you get so much more out of it. Definitely remember your videos from back in your warehouse days though.

5:47 This is EXACTLY how I used to think. After college I started wearing makeup a lot less often and for the last few years I’ve really felt like my bare face is my ‘proper’ face and my face with makeup is my altered face.

This felt very cute and nostalgic (I think it's the music, pretty sure I used it myself for a vid 😂) I love long form media but miss seeing short videos. Sometimes I love a 40 minute chatty vlog when I'm tidying or painting, but I struggle to find 8 minute videos to watch when I'm brushing my hair 🤷‍♀️ Also I love that you now film without make-up and that it's become much more normal these days. I never wear make-up and often feel inferior or unprofessional because a made-up face is the norm in this society. Thank you 🙏 Also your video production time has ramped up so much so it's nice that you can save time somewhere 😅

It's so wild how if a video was more than 5 minutes back then, people were like "wow this is so long" and now if it's less than 10 minutes people are like "why was this so short?" 😂

I remember the days when you lived I'm a warehouse, I can't believe it was that long ago! Also love your comments about make up, I have started doing the same for similar reasons and I wanted my students to see someone who didn't wear makeup everyday as I know they see a lot of makeup faces and filters online so wanted to show an example of a normal face 🙂

This is so interesting. Because no, I didn't watch you in 2015. But I started watching you in 2017 and I remember when you made the switch to get help and not just do everything on your own... so... even though I missed that charming, very young lady of the 2015 video, this made me realize I've actually been around for a while. I have been here for SO long. I can't even remember. You were probably one of the first RU-vidrs I regularly watched (along with Rosianna, Dodie, the Five Awesome Girls (and their respective individual channels), Tessa, John & Hank, Weezy Waiter, and Sanna. I feel like AGES have passed but it's been so fun to watch your channels grow and evolve over the years. Thanks for being more 'real' these days and focusing so much on the content rather than the aesthetic. It sounds like so much work! I do miss the old days of RU-vid but as you said, it's just another type of platform now that serves a different purpose.

I've been someone who could never be bothered with make up so just nice to see insights into why people do wear it and if they stopped, why they stopped.

I remember thinking RU-vid was so different and professional in 2015 cos everyone was using ring lights and filming in HD in front of curated backgrounds. How far it's come! I do miss a short video though, and Ive started watching vlogbrothers again which I think has really retained the early RU-vid vibes. All that said, I love what you do now, both the vlogs and the well produced mini documentary style content and everything in between ❤

And like so many others have said, I really appreciate that you're not wearing makeup these days! I have quite bad acne and eczema on my face that often looks even worse with makeup, but I struggle to ditch the concealer even when my skin is a bit clearer. Seeing you do so many cool professional things without makeup has been amazing, its really helped shift the baseline of what normal healthy skin looks like, bc on some level I really did think people without skin issues had completely smooth skin and no under eye circles at all despite any real life evidence to the contrary.

You could make a little experiment on how a video would turn out if you would "go back in time" and produce a video "under past conditions" as much as possible, so less time filming, edit yourself,... And maybe comment on how that effects your day to day life. Does it safe you time? Are you happy with the way you work currently or is there anything from the past that you maybe miss about your work?

It's so interesting you saying about normalising your natural face. I've been wearing full face makeup since I was 15 (which was late in my circles), and was dabbling in concealer and lipstick as young as 7. Im now 27 and honestly still find it hard to totally love my naked face. I think as I've gotten older I've cared slightly less about being bare-faced infront of some people (mostly because I don't always have the time and energy) but it's still something that plays on my mind. I have to make the decision not to care. The thing I most want to change is how I see myself without makeup though. I really, genuinely don't recognise my naked face as my face, and I want to change that.

I had surgery recently and then was at home recovering for 6 weeks and I feel like during that time I really normalised having my actual face for myself! It’s not a bad face! I still put on a little bit of make up when I go to work but I’m much happier going out and about with none on now. It’s a funny old thing!

I probably started watching you not long after that. I'd guess like 2016-ish. It's interesting how much younger you look in that video even though I didn't notice the changes in real time. You also kinda look like Emma Watson in that video, and your accent sounds a little different. I'm not good enough at British accents to really pinpoint what it is, but it does sound different to me. I like that RU-vid videos tend to be a bit longer these days, but there are still some old school RU-vidrs out there who consistently post short videos, like the Green brothers & Tom Scott (though his are a bit longer than vlogbrothers at least, and Hank & John *do* make longer content too).

Ah how times have changed on RU-vid! I remember watching a video of Hannah's with short hair above chin length yearssss ago, maybe before her channel changed to be about sex ed? I didn't watch again for years and stopped being as involved in RU-vid for a good while, but I think I rediscovered Hannah's videos again 5 years ago (has it been 5 years already?!?) when talking about her UC/stoma journey as someone who also has IBD (Crohn's, which I've had dx around 6 years ago now).

omg I think that was around the time I started watching, maybe??? Like I was certainly watching by then, bc watching the older footage wasn't as idk jarring? (what are english words idk them) Normally when youtubers go back to footage from before I started watching them it's super weird bc it's like I don't ~know that style and this was just "oh yeah she used to wear a lot more makeup" 😂
