One aspect of the is that the great composers were immersed in music from a very young age - so the fundamentals are as fluent for them as speaking is for most people. If on top of that early fluency in playing an instrument with ease is added exceptional intelligence and flexible intuitive talents - you have the potential for musical genius - but only the bare bones of potential as yet. It takes then a huge amount of luck - right teachers, freedom to develop etc. - for the truly exceptional one-in-a-million level musical talent to manifest.
You are a true classical music listener! (Lol). I feel like classical music has been overlooked as just being “relaxing” or “studying” music, there are plenty of music that objects to that. Not many people listen to classical or play it nowadays, and the people who do talk more than listening. Really like how you focus on listening and understanding the music rather than talking about how the music is, good for you!
One of my favorite piano recordings, and a popular one! Zimerman has such a polished touch even compared to other pianists that works so well for Chopin. every choice he makes just seems so tasteful for Chopin to me. I had the dvd with this pre RU-vid (it might have originally been released as a vhs because this was recorded in the 80s), and it’s a wonderful selection of pieces.
You have to listn to a piece 3,4, 6, 10 times before it becomes familiar and you start to understand it. I'm talking about complex works like symphonies, concertos, oratorios, masses, passions, sonatas, string quartets .... But Chopin is hard even when he is easy. You need precise control of every note, precise pedalling, a feeling for the slight hesitations and accelerations (rubato), to be able to play not just fast, but for the notes to be like little pearls. There are composers who are flashier, faster and more complex, but Chopin is plenty hard - and playing him with feeling and taste, not just technique, is something I think you have to be born with. I mean to perform; you can learn and appreciate even if all you can play is chopsticks.
I can't say I'm new to classical music (I finished music school back in 2017) but it was this performance that motivated me to start listening to classical music. And furthermore, I even continued playing the piano myself. Absolutely breathtaking performance, one of a kind. P.S. Also, wanna suggest another great recording by Zimerman, Brahms piano concerto no 2 in B flat major with Leonard Bernstein. Easy to find on youtube, it's very popular
Complicated at the beginning and endless in subsequent listens (with infinite versions by different pianists) throughout life, such are the charms of classical music

Good luck with the coda! I've been trying to perfect it for at least 2 years - and I'm afraid it's still hit-and-miss. I'm an amateur - I sometimes get the right relaxed wrists to use rebound from the keys for speed - sometimes I'm just forcing through it as best I can. If that's what's happening, I throw in more pedal and try for more "passion" since the technique is failing 😂
