The way these characters are portrayed in their own introduction videos is actually really smart. In each one, it makes that specific character look like an unstoppable badass compared to the rest. Making each one feel just as fun and badass as the others, without outshining eachother.
Of course, that's partly because it's always Red Team clowning on Blu Team. In the lore (as I understand it), the Red mercenaries are the "real" characters and are unique, while the Blu ones are just goons who happen to look and act the same depending on their jobs. I've never really done a deep dive on TF2 lore, so I don't know if that's 100% accurate, but that's what I have seen other people say.
@DiggerTheDwarf In most of the lore, the RED team are the main characters, but very rarely, someone from the BLU team _can_ be a prominent character as well. Specifically, the War Update (where the BLU Soldier is featured) and the MvM trailer (where both teams join up against the robots). But yeah, most often the BLU team are just jobbers; even in-game, they aren't even featured in the MvM mode despite appearing in the trailer. And the main TF2 comics completely remove them from existence, with their roles being taken over by the TFC mercs instead.
As a TF2 reaction video (and playing) addict, this was excellent. I love that you said the "That's blood" and "No they don't" lines before the Soldier and Medic did.
Fun Fact: the part in Demonan's trailer, he wasn't actually saying anything bad when he was censored, he just "accidentally" revealed where the Loch Ness monster actually lived, so it was censored by the Administrator
2:20 - Scout is officially from Boston (the U.S. one), though his accent comes from New York. Both cities have their own versions of the Ends. 16:45 - Yes he is, and you can use them as a weapon in the game. Congrats on reaching 200K.
What a treat! I’d love it if you explored more of the TF2 adjacent videos such as LazyPurple’s genius series “How It Feels” and the incredible Emesis Blue horror film. Cheers!
Might be better to lay off LazyPurple for now, since it's made mostly for active players. In other words, he won't get like 90% of the jokes and misunderstand how some of the classes and subclasses work. It's not a bad series but introductory stuff like more videos or weapon and subclass breakdowns might be better first.
Here are some fun facts about each of the characters. Medic-in the games lore,he is undoubtedly the most insane person in gaming Scout-he can’t read (shown in the comics) Demoman-demos real name is Tabish, and he is best friends with the enemy teams soldier Pyro-pyro wears the optical mask because it’s melted onto his face Heavy-heavy and medic are good pals because medic can turn him invincible Spy-he’s miss paulings husband and scouts dad Engineer-engineers real name is dell conagher Sniper-engineer custom made stilts for sniper, cuz he was to short to see over high ledges Soldier-he went on a one man militia after he was rejected by the army
It was explained why Soldier is the way he is in the comics. The water supply of the area was contanimated with lead during the Gravel Wars, so Mann. Co gave the mercs bottled water. Soldier just never drank the bottled water.
Scout's from Boston. The Soldier drank lead-poisoned water for several weeks without realizing and got brain rot. Pyro has weird goggles that make him see that. Demoman is Scottish with a cursed eye socket. Heavy is Russian and loves his guns, yes he has multiple, all with names too. The engineer has a family history of being crazy smart (kind of has a god complex too sometimes). Medic definitely has a god complex and stole a van to get the doves, the thing he put on Heavy's heart, if it were to have a name I'd say an Ubercharge adapter. Sniper is from Newzealand but was adopted as a baby in Australia, he throws the jars of piss in-game and it gives a crit bonus. Spy is French (and Scout's Dad), in-game he has a disguise kit but it's not as effective as you'd think, he can backstab melee for crits but melee is sometimes a bit messy. Yes Sandvich restores health, it's only available for Heavy but he can throw it for anyone to pick up, yes even enemies.
2:20 i mean that's just the boston accent isnt it! 8:00 a little bit said he paused here and missed the censored joke but oh well lol i always love watching people react to these videos for the first time. they're such incredible works of comedic writing and charming animation, especially given how old they are at this point
team fortress 1 is like tf2 but without all the humor and cartoony vibes and with worse graphics and the characters are more generic military men etc etc anyway the two biggest other cinematics would have to be "expiration date" and "end of the line". there are others like the "mann vs machine" ads but theyre are moreso just hyping up a gamemode (but theyre still neat to watch) and then uh, there's comics! yeah they have comics. you could read those if you like. i think they're pretty good. just know that they havent been updated since 2017 and left off on a cliffhanger
tf2 S tier game made by valve, same guys who are owned by steam and made other popular good games such as portal, half life, counter strike, dota and left 4 dead
The main reason why Spy, Medic, and Pyro seemed so much more fleshed out than the others is because they were the last ones made, so the animators were more experienced and more ambitious at that point. As for other official animations to react to, there's Mann Vs Machine and Jungle Inferno (trailers for major updates), and Expiration Date (the pilot for a cancelled TV show).
Yeah, it's always a shame when people reaction to the videos, and they aren't shown in order they were made it, making it seem very sloppy for some characters and 'special' for others. When the truth is that the animators were sloppy in the beginning with no experience, and just slowly gaining more experience over the years as they released them.
@ichangedmynamenow3478 Valve is incapable of getting things done on time and failed to finish the pilot before the deadline Adult Swim gave them, so the show was canceled. But Valve did eventually finish it and released it anyway.
Fun fact: They censored the Demoman in that scene because he revealed the location of the monsters in the Loch Ness lake Another fun fact: since the release of Meet the Medic, there is now a 1% chance that when a scout gets blown up, a dove will fly out
Also the fact that he says there's MORE monsters in loch ness than there are people like him implies there's more than one loch ness monster in the tf2niverse.
@@Nokielle I honestly wouldn't be surprised if some day they reveal that Loch Ness is basically like a Scottish -Atlantis- New Zealand, but with monsters instead.
There actually is a short film set in the TF2 universe called Expiration Date. It’s considerably a bit longer than the Meet the Team videos and is really entertaining. I suggest checking that out. Saddly there aren’t any more animations, though I do suggest playing the game yourself if you want more of these characters.
"they're all mad!" yeah, but the great thing is that _they're all insane in different ways,_ and _that's_ what makes this cast of characters so special
Language accents in all Mercs Scout - USA, Boston Soldier - USA Pyro - Unknown Demoman - Scottish Heavy - Russia Engineer - USA, Texas Medic - German Sniper - Australian(Was New Zealander if you read TF2 Comics) Spy - French Fun fact, Spy and Pyro are the same VA.
It is so weird not watching them out of release order. At least for Heavy, who has the shortest one as it is the first, has a big role in Medic's trailer, which is also appropriate because they are the classic duo. But it is nice to see someone's genuine laughter at first watching these.
You can blame the compilation video. Whoever put it together placed the clips out of order. And a lot of reactors react to the compilation video because it's easy. And it annoys me to no end.
they put it in order from scout to spy, when you choose your class at the beginning of a game, you can see it goes from, scout, soldier, pyro, demo man, heavy, engineer, medic, sniper, and spy
18:14 I love the detail of "scout" holding the knife so that when it closes on his hand, it's with the back of the blade, so it doesn't actually cut him.
Heavy: "I've yet to meet one that can outsmart bullet." Medic: **outsmarts bullet** Blue Spy: "He could be you, he could be me, he could even be-" Red Spy: "...Right behind you."
@@caramelcandys It's said that there were subtle hints that the Blu Spy knew Blu Scout was the Red Spy all along, and that Red Spy knew that Blu Spy knew that he was found out, and it just becomes this subtle Cat & Mouse game of Blu Spy pushing how far Red Spy will keep this charade up. Blu Spy was too confident in dealing the _coup de grace_ with that final line, as the Red Spy is surrounded by three Blus, but he underestimated Blu Soldier's idiocy/craziness.
One of the reasons people love these characters so much is because even though they’re all insane or at least just a bit of their rocker its presented differently among the cast making it very versatile
The 'meet the' videos are also great as they showcase the special things of a class very nicely too. Soldier rocket-jumps. Demo lays traps and demolishes Engineer stuff. Engineer does area denial. Even the fight between Spy and Sniper shows that the switchblade does almost no damage face-to-face but it's an instant kill from behind...
As someone who loves this game and fan films, you must watch emesis blue! It’s a fan film based on the concept of respawning in the game and how it affects the characters we play when it goes wrong. It reflects a lot of major films in their scenes and acts like a horror film with amazing execution. Keep up the great content:))
the demoman has some of the best voicelines in the game if you dominate an enemy player and they're playing as a pyro he says cool lines, one such line is "GO TO HELL! AND TELL THE DEVIL I'M COMING FOR HIM NEXT!" and its just that kind of funny chaos and fun you get in tf2 that makes it just still so genuinely fun
now that you are in for a wild ride, i suggest you check expiration date wich is a short film made by the studio, and then you have crazy ammount of awesome SFM animations made by the commu nity , i suggest : the winglet, kostamoinen (for shit and giggles) and many more, pleased to have you in our community ! much love
The characters and universe of Team Fortress 2 have pretty deep (and insane) lore Scout is from Boston (iirc) and the youngest of 8 brothers, so he learnt to run. And run fast. Soldier have IQ around 10, introduces himself as Jane Doe and was fighting in ww2. From 1945 to 1949. (Not en error on my part) and he thinks Sun Tzu is written as "Sun Zoo" Heavy is Russian. He have 2 (or 3?) degrees in Russian literature, have 3 sisters and learned English by himself (he is the third smartest person in the team actually. Im adding it because people think that he isn't very smart because of his size and the way he talks) Demoman is "the black Scottish Cyclops". He drinks so much, so his blood is pure alcohol. Also his eye socket is cursed so mercs fought posessed eye more than once when Medic tried to replace his eye. Engineer is Texan. His father was the greatest mind in the TF2 universe, but died due to the excess exposure to Aistralium (the unique metal in TF2 universe) over the years Pyro is a deranged individual. They are insane due to the prolonged exposure to asbestos of their suit. The team in Meet the Pyro was talking about their Pyro, not the enemy one btw. Medic is a German. The second smartest person in the team (after engi). Sees other mercs as test subjects but cares about them is nis own way. Surgically attached souls of the other 8 Mercs to his and sold 2 of them to the Devil to return to life and have the devil's pen. Sniper was raised in Australia. But he was born in New Zealand (that is now destroyed). His in-game model got a scar on the cheek after Meet the Spy was released. Spy is a French. Its hinted that he is Scout's father but it was never confirmed or denied. In Meet the Spy the red spy finishes the blu Spy's monologue (B)"it could be you! It could be me! He could even be..."(R)"right behind you!"
"only a 20 Minute video" doesn't take into account that there is a while rabbit hole of incredibly good team fortress 2 videos you'll probably watch after this. Like the Lazy purple videos or the Emesis Blue horror movie.
Fun stuff about them: Scout if I remember correctly is from Boston Soldier never was soldier. Got kicked out from everywhere Pyro is owner of the big tech company and he is a big inventor Demoman wasn't cursing. He was censored because of Loch-ness monsters Heavy has russian literature PhD Engineer from Texas Medic sold souls of his teammates to Satan Sniper from New Zealand which has grown up in Australia Spy is Scout's dad
I hate how this commonly-used version of the video has them out of order. It puts the videos in the order that the classes are listed in-game, when clearly they should be in the order they were released, since the last ones are significantly higher-production-value, so when you put them out of order you get Meet The Pyro right after Meet The Soldier, which is pretty jarringly discordant.
9:27 I actually renamed my minigun "Zhe Very Expensiff Weppon." description: "It cost Forr Handred Tawsand dollar to faer this weppon... for twelf seconds." 12:19 PROPS for picking up he has no gloves! only 2 people I've seen so far noticing that, out of the lot. you have to react to the winners of the Saxxy Awards... they were like the Oscars for TF2 animations, and the winners got a statue in game. killing players with it turned them into gold statues.
if you're really interested in the lore of Team Fortress 2 i'd recommend watching The Beard's Comic Dub of TF2's comics ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MGA9ebIDW_o.html
There's more shorts to watch with these characters called Expiration Date and Jungle Inferno! Then I'd recommend LazyPurple's "How it feels to play" series! It'll get you into the game in an instant!
Lore wise Pyro isn’t mentally ill he’s actually a pacifist who doesn’t know he’s in a warzone because the goggles in his mask make him see things as you saw in this… instead of brutal
Funny thing about the censored part in Meet The Demo. He’s not actually swearing, he saying stuff about the Loch Ness Monster that the government wants to keep confidential
The shorts in this compilation actually run in the same order that the characters are selectable in the game going from left to right. The actual order that the shorts came out in is not sequential to this meet the team video. The earlier shorts were much shorter and used more as promo materials after the game had been out for a couple of years or so. Heavy, Scout and Sniper were among the first to drop followed by the rest, though there was a substantial gap between the making of Meet the Spy and Meet the Medic. A several year gap in fact. When Meet the Medic was finally released it'd garnered a huge amount of hype, and came alongside a major update for the game which culminated in Valve transitioning the service into a free to play model. That being said, the game is just, well, free. No battle pass, no microtransactions just to get to play key features of the game, it's just free. There are some monetized things such as buying a premium account for a few bucks to be able to chat and trade items in game, but that is more to keep bot accounts at bay than trying to leech your wallet. We would have to wait another long stretch without any cinematics before finally getting the Pyro as the final team member to get a promo. There was a huge lead up event with mysterious items in game, a ticking clock, with a full on ARG and cryptic code spread over the TF2 website and on the mystery items in game that people hastily worked to crack only to reveal a very simple phrase "Pyro Update" and, sure enough, not long after people cracked the code, the pyro update went live, with tons of new items, rebalancing fixes, and, at long last, the meet the Pyro introduction trailer. The video damn near broke youtube with people flocking to watch it. There were... reasons, people NEEDED to see it for themselves. In that time Valve had also struck a deal with Cartoon Network and adult swim to produce a show for TF2 to air on the network's late night block. But production time caused valve to drop the project. That said, they would release the unaired pilot as its own short "Expiration Date" in tandem with the "Bread Update" We'd also get a series of comics online depicting the world TF2 takes place in and the mercenaries in more detail. Sadly, it remains incomplete to this day, having ended on a cliffhanger with no word on when it will finally be finished. And that has become the state of the game at large when it comes to valve's involvement. The company seems to have largely abandoned their longrunning game which set the gold standard for team based class shooters so many years ago. A skeleton crew of devs keeps the game going, but gone are the days of major updates and new features. Even so, there is a relentless, neigh unstopable group of dedicated hardcore fans who play it on the regular with no interest in abandoning their beloved game. It is just that good.
Meet the Sandvich: If you look around you may notice that the camera positioning in the refrigerator is the exact same point of view as the BLU Spy's severed head in the Medic's frig. The dialogue for this video was pretty much all *improve* with the voice actors; When in the recording studio, they had a general idea on how the video was going to go but Valve didn't have any actual script, so they improved while recording & that's what we're hearing. Meet The Medic: Having mentioned the severed head, The Meet The Medic video we've seen is the *second* concept that Valve used for making these videos. The first concept for the Medic was unfinished when they switched gears to produce the second video for us...The format being used for the first concept was still put together & made it to RU-vid at www-dot-youtube-dot-com/ watch?v=NIU1GCR1S_E named, appropriately enough, "Meet The Medic -- Outtake -- Kill Me." Beyond showing us some of the lore behind the Medic's Medigun, pharmaceuticals for healing the Team, & eventually the Ubercharge added to his Medigun, it also shows how the Spy's head ended up in his refrigerator.
Everyone's already mentioned the PRO stuff like Expiration Date, but there are a lot of fan shorts out there that are great fun despite being amateur works. Some of my favorites from the Old Days are Heavy is Spy, The Vicious Cycle of 2Fort, the My Little Pony version The Vicious Cycle of 2Fort, and the really high-quality Rise of the Epic Scout.
a few series I would say are important: "how it feels" by lazypurple "A Manns guide" by soundsmith; any tutorials or kill compilations by 'uncle dane' or 'solarlight'
this dude reacting to literally everything! i got a suggestion. FUNKYTOWN (CARTEL REMIX) you actually got a skinset for pyro that makes everything look like in the video
Fun Facts: Spy is Scout’s father (Yes, that does indeed mean that Spy pulled a “Your Mom” joke on his own kid, with photographic evidence) Engineer is the only one that can understand what Pyro says Sniper was born in New Zealand but was adopted and raised by his parents in Australia Soldier is incredibly stupid from drinking water with lead in it Demoman and Soldier are best friends If you blow up Scout there’s a chance Archimedes (Medic’s Dove) will pop out Scout can’t read Heavy has a bunch of different miniguns (and yes, they all have names) Heavy also has a Ph.D Heavy also has three younger sisters and he helps his mother, financially, since his father isn’t in the picture Sniper’s piss jars are actually called Jarate, and you can throw them at people in game Sniper’s Machete is called a Kukri
Would've been better, I think, if you'd watched them in order. (Don't know why the uploader stitched them up out of order.) The Pyro one hits better if you've seen all the other ones first. The mix between the dryer style of the early ones and the more cinematic style of the later ones would be less jarring. Etc.
