45:00 Some people do think Elizabeth loves Jack... I think it's more that she's enamored with him because he is everything she wants to be. From the very beginning, Elizabeth has craved adventure and has been obsessed with pirates - because she wants to be one. She wants freedom, wants to explore, and these are things a woman can't have, especially a noble one. Jack represents that life she wants - especially in the first movie before she sees more of his flaws.

Btw guys, the Caribbean Sea is actually notorious for having several reefs that sit not far below the water line and lots of small islets that can only be seen at low tide. It is actually easy to run up on one if you don't have good charts or a good lookout. During filming of the first movie, the crew was going to sail to a location at night to be ready for early filming. All the locals advised them not to do it; sailors native to the Caribbean rarely sail at night because you can't see the reefs and the little islands that are just below the water line, and unless your boat has a very shallow draft (meaning that when loaded with supplies and crew, it does not sit far below the waterline) you can end up in trouble. The crew assured everyone that with GPS, they would be fine. Sure enough, they hit a reef, punctured the boat, and started taking on water. Johnny had his yacht on location, so he sailed out to pick them up.

Fun Fact: Davy Jones and the Flying Dutchman are actually two completely unrelated legends of the sea. Davy Jones, as you yourself pointed out, is the mythical sea devil who collects the souls of those who die at sea and stores them in his Locker. The Flying Dutchman is a ghost ship that was cursed to sail the seas forever, never making port. However, in real nautical folklore Davy Jones is not the captain of the Flying Dutchman. The Captain of the Flying Dutchman, according to legend, is Hendrick Van Der Decken. Disney took some creative liberties and combined the two legends for the sake of the story.

I can't stress enough how much I adore the Liar's Dice scene - because from the moment they sit down, the winner has already been decided. There's a rule that's really important to understanding this scene: you can only challenge the previous bid on your own turn, meaning as well that you can only challenge the player directly before you in the turn order. By sitting where he did, Bill quite literally puts himself between Will and Jones. And Jones is genuinely shocked at the end - because he's only ever been hurt by love, he never even imagined that Bill would put his son before himself.

The back story between Jack and Beckett (sorry if I spelt it wrong) also is about the Black Pearl. It ended up being a deleted scene. If I remember correctly, the Black Pearl was once the Wicked Wench. Jack was involved with the East India Trading Co. and Jack was supposed to deliver people (possibly slave cargo) but Jack said people aren't cargo. So he burned the Wench to its now Black color and he and the ship sank. Jack then cut a deal with Jones to save him and the ship with the cost of the souls he was meant to deliver. Beckett also branded Jack as a pirate for failing him. Please correct me if I'm wrong. (Theres also a book series of Jack Sparrow as a kid)
@leakypeach6250
@leakypeach6250 Год назад
This is correct, but I also hesitate to consider this scene when summing up Jack's character. There's an argument to be made that Jack doing this contradicts his character arc; that being a journey from selfishness to selflessness. There's also an argument to be made that this selfless decision that results in his death and branding as a pirate leads him to becoming more selfish. However, what tips the scales for me is that the scene was ultimately cut for a reason. While most scenes are cut for time purposes, this scene was stated to be cut specifically because of how it would affect Jack's arc. Also, the scene you're talking about is from the third movie. Not this one.

@@leakypeach6250 I’m partial to the idea that Jack at one point was a decent man in his youth- but the tragedy of his ship burning and being branded a pirate all these years made him a functioning alcoholic, and made him selfish. I like it because that’s usually what happens to people, overtime they begin to be less good and more jaded if they continue to have bad things happen to them even when they try to do good. Feels realistic to me and is a reason he eventually has an arc, because he was, in his heart a good man

To answer why the specific amount of souls for Jack's is 100, it's because there's a deleted scene in the third film where we learned Jack was told to get a shipment of cargo (which ended up being 100 slaves) from one place to another and he refused. As punishment for his treachery, Jack and the ship he was on (which ended up being the Black Pearl) was destroyed and sunken into the seas. This is where Jack would meet Davy Jones and make the deal with him revealed in this film.

If you want you can go through all 5 or stop at 3. I personally like the three, the last 2 were kind of meh, you can tell Johnny was not really into it. Of course he was going through a very troubled time in his personal life. (She who must not be named). Knowing now what he was going through at the time from the trial, I'm a bit more sympathetic to watching it. And here's a little more pirate lore, so the reason why Beckett is after Jack is alot more personal, Beckett paid Jack to carry a cargo to West India trading company, only to find out it was slaves. And Jack freed them instead, telling Beckett "people aren't cargo mate." Beckett then branded him with P for pirate. Beckett then burned Jacks ship , turning it charcoal black, Jack then made the deal with Davy Jones to get his ship back from the depths of the ocean, Davy Jones gave him 13 years to be ship of the Captain of ship, obviously that deal is a bit skewed because the mutiny Barbosa did. They went to that swampy place with the witch, it's speculated those were the freed slaves.

So, that "Liar's dice" scene makes a lot less sense in the final cut that y'all saw. The reason being that the final cut only uses about half the scene. There's actually a whole explanation for the game along with a starting round against Davy Jones where Will bets 100 years of servitude against his father's freedom. In this game, he actually wins. Then, Will gets greedy and makes a play at the key. That's why his father intervenes and intentionally loses to save Will. Edit: there's actually a great RU-vid video out there that goes into detail about everything that was cut from that scene.
@MikeMozzaro
@MikeMozzaro Год назад
I'd actually much rather recommend Lord Ravenscrofts video breaking down the logic and emotions behind the scene we actually see. If anything: aside from the lack of a clear explanation of how the game actually functions: I think the scene as is is far more effective. (Even if it does have to cut Will's best line lol)

Guys, every one of the Pirates movies has an end credits scene. If you go back and watch the scene at the end of #1, you will see how Jack the Monkey survives. The one at the end of this film is not as important; Verbinski sort of threw it in so people would not hate him for for the jail dog's fate. The one at the end of #3 is MAJORLY important, though I'm afraid film #5 tossed the entire point of that scene out the window for the sake of their so-called "plot", but I won't rant about that now because it's a big spoiler. Honestly, after Pirates #3, you can stop. Pirates 4 was written to be a standalone film instead of connecting to the previous trilogy or setting up a new one, and even though it had the same writing team, the loss of Gore Verbinski shows. I like Rob Marshall, I really do, but I'm not sure he was the right choice for this movie. Additionally, leadership at Disney changed at this time, and that made things difficult for Johnny as he lot the *one* guy in the top brass who never had a problem with Johnny's portrayal of Jack in the original films (everyone else thought he was making Jack too "weird"). Coupled with what we now he was going through in his personal life, it's no wonder Johnny's performance in #5 did not have the same zest of life to it that the first films did. Idk...that's just a personal opinion, and I'll still watch your reactions to the others if you go all the way to the end; maybe you can give me a new perspective. And the effects in #5 particularly may be of interest to you. But for myself--and I know this seems ridiculous to say when we've been dealing with a crew of cursed skeletons and the boogeyman of the sea--but as the series went on, it seemed to get less and less "real" for me. Before, there was always a big element of reality in the story, with most people not believing in and even being shocked by the fantastical elements like the skeletal crew and Davy Jones. But in the 4th films we get zombies, voodoo, mermaids, the Fountain of Youth, shrunken ships, and a mystical sword that controls boat rigging -*-all in the same story-*- and they even take a legendary REAL pirate -- the only thing in the film with a foot in the real world -- into something out of a fantasy novel. It just...for me personally, it just never grabbed me.

Don't get me wrong, the CGI and visual effects are (surprisingly) fantastic, but can we talk about the special effects?! if it's a ship, it's either a full-size ship they built (though afaik for the most part they'd essentially just build the outside of a ship and there would be no mid or lower decks-- those would be separate sets) or a miniature. When the kraken's tentacles fall and crush the ship, what they did was fill steel pipes with concrete, paint them blue, lift them with cranes, and drop them. The blue was chromakeyed out and replaced with CGI tentacles, but the destruction was very real. In the third movie, there are a couple very clever composited shots. I highly recommend watching behind the scenes vids on all the practical effects and sets used in this series!

Just a reminder that Jacks Compass points to whatever the holder wants most in the world at the moment, this can both be anything or anyone (I’m a little unsure of how specific it works, like if it is once “hearts deepest wish/desire” or something like that but even if that’s the case the basic rules still apply. This is why it never points to north and it’s also why Mr Gibbs said to Will in the first movie “it’s true that the compass doesn’t point to north but we aren’t trying to find north”. So if the one holding it doesn’t know what he or she wants or they do know what they want but perhaps feel uncertainty over it (I don’t know how to explain it, Tia Dalmatia said it better) then it can’t pinpoint a heading. Sorry for grammar issues btw.

You should watch all five! I think they're all worth watching. Also, Elizabeth was never interested in Jack. Every time she seems, she is actually faking it to get something. In the first one, if I remember well the only time is on the beach when Jack is drinking rhum. Elizabeth is also holding a bottle but I'm not sure she actually drank any. When Jack tries to put his hand around her shoulder she says "I think I'm not drunk enough for that" but she says it in that fake tone that she also uses to pretend she's fainting, and when Jack keeps drinking she just looks at the bottle in disgust. Here, she pretends she wants to kiss him right after Norrington tells her that he might have sent Will to the Flying Dutchman, so she's probably trying to get information. It makes sense that it would be fake because not long before, when he says they could get married right away she has this disgusted look and says "no thank you" while leaving. Then at the end she only kisses him to distract him while she cuffs him. She likes him as a person/friend, which is why she says at the end "he was a good man", but she was never interested in him romantically. Also, technically, Jack would probably smell really bad and have foul breath. Cleanliness isn't his thing. Not very endearing when it's not through a screen.

The story of Jack and the black pearl is interesting. The movies do no more then hint at the back story, but here it is in brief. Becket was impressed by Jack's ability and gave him command of "the wicked wench" to sail for him. On one of his missions, Jack refused to tell Becket what he wanted to know so he punished him by forcing him to transport slaves. Jack freed to slaves and Becket, upon recapturing him, branded him with a "p" for pirate and burned the wicked wench, who Jack had become attached to. Jack escaped and swam to his ship trying to save it, but it was too late. Drowning, he summoned Davy Jones and made a deal to save his ship and let him captain her for 13 years, in exchange Jack would then serve 100 on the Dutchman. After the ship was brought back, he remained her "the black pearl" and they sailed for a little while together. Then, Jack arrives in Tortuga, recruited a crew and had Barbosa be his first mate. The purpose of their journey was to find the legendary treasure of Cortez. Barbosa convinced him that since everything was equal shares, that should include the location of the treasure and so Jack told him. That night Barbosa led a mutiny and marooned Jack on an island. The rest of the story is covered in the movies but there are far more tales of Jack sparrow from before he gets the pearl, after his mutiny, and after the movies
