... always took me a couple days to get back my landlegs - once I got stopped by Honolulu's finest walking TO the bar, and explained it to them, they were very suspicious of my story. Gave them the ship's name and everything. They eventually believed me.
Johnny Depp actually got all of those gestures and unsteady walking from Hunter S. Thompson. He lived with Hunter and studied him while preparing to play Hunter in the movie Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Bill Murray also played Hunter in Where the Buffalo Roam, and he commented that you can't play Hunter without a part of him staying with you forever. If you see any footage of Hunter, you'll see him doing all of those same mannerisms. Hunter S. Thompson was an amazing man, and he and Johnny Depp became very close after Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas until Hunter's death. Johnny even covered the cost of the very elaborate funeral that Hunter had always said he wanted... including being launched out of a giant cannon that Hunter designed when he was young.
I was fortunate enough to be one of Jack Sparrow's crew (the ones he picked up in Tortuga) in this movie and actually played a different role in the third movie, At World's End. You can even see me here and there during this reaction video. We filmed for a few months in Hollywood then went to the Caribbean for six weeks. When the movie premiered at the El Capitan Theater in Hollywood, it came as a total surprise to us to find they had included our names in the credits. (Extras - even featured extras - rarely get their names in the credits.) It was an absolute blast working on this movie and getting to know everyone on the crew. When I went back two and a half years later to do the third movie, almost all of them remembered me. Glad you enjoyed this movie, Dawn. As Johnny himself once said, "Isn't this the most fun you've ever had in your life?" It was!
@@artembentsionov That was one scene where they used Omid Djalili for both twins, but I was the visual reference they used for when they watched me fall. For the most part, I was the one writing in the book.
@@michaelkeenan3437 I did come home with a couple of belaying pins from the Black Pearl and three cannonballs. For the first movie, the Black Pearl was a massive set built on a barge so she was dismantled in the Caribbean once we were through with shooting. I pretty much pulled these things out of a dumpster. For the second and third movies, a full-sized ship was built. If I had had a choice as to what to take home, it would have been a pair of swords.
And it's a reference to ancient sea maps, where the farthest sections of the sea were marked with warnings to keep sailors away from supposedly dangerous areas.
The pirates find other ships because the prevailing wind is the same for everyone. The only difference is how effective you are in using that wind. Good sailors can catch less skilled sailors despite both being blown by the same wind.
I think that when she said it, she was thinking the "The Interceptor" was an Island or something. Like Tortuga. 2+2 man. 2+2. I could be wrong thou, but I doubt it.
18:57 You’re kind of right on this one - it’s not that Bootstrap wanted to stay immortal because it’s cool, it’s because he felt guilty about the mutiny and decided that he and all the others deserved to remain cursed
Elizabeth's father is played by Sir Jonathan Pryce. In _Game of Thrones_ he played the High Sparrow. Johnny Depp's inspiration for Jack Sparrow's vocal and movement style was Keith Richards. _Davy Jones Locker_ is an old term for dying in the deep sea. When a sailor is lost at sea or a ship sinks it is said they went down to Davy Jones Locker. For a nice fight with a giant squid you should watch the 1954 adaptation of Jules Verne's _20,000 Leagues Under the Sea._ There are some great pirate movies from the Golden Age. I recommend _Captain Blood_ (1935), _The Sea Hawk_ (1940), and _The Master of Ballantrae_ (1953) all starring Errol Flynn.
I have the feeling that you're younger than I am, because I remember Jonathan Pryce from his earlier movies, the first of which was Jumpin' Jack Flash, with Whoopi Goldberg.
@r7899 I think the first film I saw him in was Terry Gilliam's _Brazil_ (1985). Of course, he became a figure of some controversy with the Broadway transfer of _Miss Saigon_ (1991), in which he was cast as a Eurasian character. (In the original West End production the casting raised no eyebrows.) I mentioned _Game of Thrones_ because Dawn recalled him from that show.
@@passionsquietrage Nothing ironic about it. It wasn't even coincidental. The writers and producers cast Richards based on Depp's portrayal. The Wikipedia article on the series says Richards was supposed to be in the second film but the script didn't have room for his character, and also he was tied up in a Stones tour.
It's great because her guesses run like a broken clock. When she nails one, you wouldn't think she was so wrong on every other guess before that, lmao! I love it.
The term Davy Jones Locker is a reference to the bottom of Ocean. And the way they used to navigate the oceans was with sea/ocean charts and navigated by the stars with an instrument called a Sextant.
Hector Barbossa is one of the greatest gentleman villain, in movie history. You will miss him, for a while. About the best pirate movie. Did you ever hear about "Yellowbeard"? Well ... John Cleese, Eric Idle, Graham Chapman, Peter Boyle, Marty Feldman, Cheech and Chong and the unforgotten James Mason, know him. And his wife Madeline Kahn...
@@herbertkeithmiller The answer is in their episode "Hitting the High Seas" The Captain: And who are you to tell me about naval law? Harry Hooker: His name is Jones, sir. Davy Jones. The Captain: Davy Jones? As in Davy Jones' Locker? Micky: Yeah, right! It's his great-great-grandfather, and when he turns 25, he inherits the locker!
In the good old days, when an ocean voyage took months and months, a woman on a ship becomes VERY popular. This causes friction ( bad luck ) between the interested parties.
Jack's first scene is absolutely perfect, one of the best character introductions ever, you understand exactly what type of character he is. Also, you definitely need to watch the other two films, they're a perfect trilogy
I love when blondes are very blonde lol 😅...great reaction...my mum is Scotish too i can hear the accent lol...Davy Jones Locker is the bottom of the ocean when u die at sea.
"Davy Jones' Locker" is an archaic term used by sailors to refer to the deep ocean. Anything that's lost overboard is said to have gone to Davy Jones's Locker. It's nothing special to this movie or series.
The trick with the overturned boat with air to breath while underwater is the concept used for centuries to dive for pearls in deeper water as well as how sunken ship treasure was recovered before air pumps and scuba were invented. The common term was dive bell since in most cases it looked like a big bell.
But Luke Dawn said, the overturned boat trick would never work. The trick was tested on an episode of Mythbusters, and there were certain things that would not allow that to happen. One of them was simply trying tol hold the boat like that while being underwater. It would take too much strength.
@@ronfehr7899 not just that, though. Think about it: The boat floats when full of air with 2 guys in it when it's upright. So even when it's upside down, if it's full of air it will float with 2 guys in it. It's a question of buoyancy.
The timber in a wooden rowboat has enough buoyancy that it actually will not sink even if there is no air pocket. With an air pocket it requires a lot of weight (from stuff that would sink on its own like metal or rocks) to pull that underwater. Since humans are pretty much same density as water (you can control whether you sink or float just with how much air is in your lungs), humans can not hold a wooden rowboat underwater. Wood will eventually sink, but it takes time to wood become saturated with water. And if the air pocket in the boat is about the height of human head (about 30 cm / 1 foot) the amount of weight to pull the boat underwater would be over 300 kg (650 pounds) when using barbells, aka solid metal objects, even on a small boat. As it was stated in a previous post, Mythbusters did a segment on this. But hey, that's Hollywood for you. Reality should not get in the way of entertainment.
The upturned boat wouldn't work, there's no way you'd be able to hold onto it. It would want to rise to the surface and rip from your hands. Diffference with a diving bell? Those were heavy as shit
Dawn: “ How are you guys finding things? You don’t have trackers, how do you steer? You don’t have google maps?” How do you find things? I don’t get it. LOL! HAHAHA! Even a pirate ship had navigators on board & a sextant to navigate their way. That’s how they found their way. You are absolutely clueless & hilarious sometimes.🤣
I love that you mentioned the quality of the sound effects. Not many people notice or have the ear for those things, but it's one of my favorite aspects of movies. The sound design is these movies is world class.
Historically Davy Jones Locker is just a metaphor the final resting place for drowned sailors. As in the ship went down now the crew is in Davy Jones Locker. Yes it is in fact parts of Tortuga look exactly like the ride but my memory is from the 80's. No the compass does not point at the Black Pearl, not exactly. You will have to see more movies. Giant Squid? I think you mean 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Also a Disney movie and Ride. 😇
It's funny that you said "It's a small world" during your commentary. Because "Pirates of the Caribbean" is based off of the Disneyland ride of the same name, and Disneyland also has a ride called "It's A Small World". 😂
This film is full of great actors and great writing. The opposing comedic relief of the pair of Redcoats and the pair of pirates are hilarious. Geoffrey Rush (Barbossa) was possibly the best pirate ever. They're more like guidelines anyway!
Captain Barbossa knew how to find the other ship after they left the island that had the cursed treasure because he's a pirate. He has enough experience to know all he had to do was follow the direction of the wind. He also knows where Elizabeth lives, and figured that's where they were headed.
Okay I’ll explain the Black Pearl was Jacks ship. A mutiny happened and Barbosa took over the ship and crew and abandoned Jack on the island. The crew then went on to find the cursed treasure and they took it all. Wills farther Bootstrap Bill didn’t approve of Jacks abandonment and taking the treasure so to punish Barbosa and the crew he secretly gave a peace of the treasure to Will so Barbosa and crew would remain cursed. They didn’t realize until after killing Bootstrap that they needed his blood. When they found Elizabeth she lied about her name Barbosa thought they found one of Bootstraps bloodlines and they could lift the curse. At the end of the movie Will cut himself and dropped all the coins in the chest and his blood lifting the curse.
The boat trick under water actually does work. Would be very difficult to maintain it, but if it was equally weighted down, there would indeed be a pocket of air in it.
The trick walking under that overturned rowboat would've been having enough weight to remain on the bottom, and the strength to hold onto that much trapped air. Could've been possible with just about half the air they showed and extra weights. This generation largely has forgotten how to use physical maps and charts! Davy Jones' Locker is an ancient metaphor regarding the place where drowned and lost-at-sea souls end up.
Yeah it was slightly far-fetched because of the weight/strength... but what kid hasn't pushed a glass down in the sink and seen the trapped air and understood what they were going for?
❤ I spent the whole review shouting 'please stop guessing ' ! And yes, it does work. Air is trapped in the upturned boat which can be breathed for a while.
Theoretically, it could work. Air can be trapped that way. Divers have used it for a long time. But realistically, you'd have to carry the boat floating upside-down on the surface of the water. That much buoyant air would never succumb to being carried along the bottom of the water, unless you had a couple dozen cannonballs in your pockets, and the boat strapped under your armpits. Holding on with just your hands, walking nonchalantly along the sea floor with a boat full of air: a film-magic stretch of the truth. Breathable air in an upside down boat: yes. Specifically as illustrated in this film: not exactly. It's always more fun when you take something that's probable, and carry it to an improbable extreme: voila! Movie magic!
Hey Steff when she reacted to the hunt for red October, she called the caterpillar unit on the submarine a Catpuller.. I never laughed so hard in my life. It was great.
Well, in their case it was easy to find them. Elizabeth was from Port Royal, her dad was the governor of that island. They were leaving Isla de Muerta so it was safe to assume they were going back to PR. Its a straight line, if you know you are faster than them, you will eventually catch up. As for real navigation, they used dead reckoning whichis an estimation that comes from your known position and the speed you are going with you can estimate with good accuracy how far you are from your point of origin. They used a tool called a sextant that could measure the angle between the horizon and an astronomical object like the Sun ( daytime ) or Polaris ( night ). From that angle they were able to calculate their latitude. It could also be used to measure horizontal distances between celestial object in order to calculate longitude. It's pretty amazing how accurately they were able to determine their position.
Nice! Originally, Steven Spielberg was going to direct the film, but had to drop out to direct Minority Report and Catch Me If You Can, both released in 2002. Hugh Jackman, Harrison Ford, Jim Carrey, Michael Keaton, Christopher Walken, Robert DeNiro, Matthew McConaughey, Cary Elwes, Bill Murray, Steve Martin, and Robin Williams were considered for the role. Tobey Maguire, Jude Law, Ewan McGregor, Ben Peyton, Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, Tom Hiddelston, and Chris Masterson were considered for Will Turner. Jessica Alba, Amanda Bynes, and Jaimie Alexander were considered for Elizabeth Swann. Sylvester McCoy and Tom Wilkinson were considered for Governor Swann.
*39:00** women are bad luck on a ship, thats a real sailor rule. but you name your ships girls (generally)* frankly, girls are bad luck whrevr you find them. savvy? _JC
Now, Dawn, you need to see the rest of the series... 🙂 You will love them all, me thinks. If you enjoy Pirate films, check out "Yellowbeard". I know "Ice Pirates" wasn't great but it has pirates? 🙂
For my favorite pirate movie, I'll advise "Yellowbeard", a wild nautical comedy with most of the cast from Monty Python and a bunch from Young Frankenstein (plus, Cheech & Chong).
Old fashion sailor superstitions thought that women aboard a ship was bad luck. They believed the presence of a woman would anger the water gods, which might cause storms, violent waves & weather.
I thought it risked dividing loyalties. Y’know leading to conflict, fights, resentment, and insubordination as the men all attempted to seduce/impress her.
*14:50** youve never put your kids head in a bucket under water in the pool?* have you spun a washing basket wo the clothes falling out? thr are physics lessons all over the house. another one is curtains cant actually catch fire as long as all the windows are shut. _JC
The whole pirates trilogy of movies is really well made and great fun, you're gonna love them all! Another movie you might want to look into watching is "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World" with Russell Crowe and Paul Bettany. The sound effects and music (which you mentioned quite a bit for this movie) in that film are really fantastic!
Why is everyone's chestacles out? 😂 corsettes were the style back then... but you should look up how much effort they put in to making Keira Knightley looking like she actually had something for a corsette to push up lol!
The main reason you dont want to bring women on the ships is actually because the sailors will start fighting over them. This was explained away by saying its bad luck to have them on.
Davy Jones is derived from the term Davy Jones’ Locker, a metaphor for the bottom of the sea, the state of death among drowned sailors and shipwrecks. Davy Jones is like the devil for sailors. Barbossa can’t be brought back from his corpse being given a coin. Someone has to take the coin directly from the chest to be cursed themselves. He for sure died. Bootstrap wouldn’t be dead because he was also cursed. But once the curse is lifted, he’d probably be crushed by the water pressure, or drown
I've seen a few reactions to this, and I've never seen someone be so incorrect about the things that happened at the beginning of this movie... or so on the nose about what was happening at the end of the movie... to have accomplished both is truly impressive.
When you give 5o plot lines. Bound to get one right. Then say I TOLD YOU. With all the movies you watch. You would think you would read more in the movies you see.
@@passionsquietragethat isn't irony, they wanted Keith to play that role because Johnny Depp partly based Jack on him, so that would be completely expected
The upside down boat underwater at the bottom does work as long as it is heavy enough to counter the amount of air trapped inside to keep it from rising to the surface which is quite likely here. Parlay is used to pause/call a truce to discuss/negotiate an end of the conflict between the 2 (or more) sides of a conflict. It's not exclusively a pirate thing.
@@eikthesheik Maybe, but it wouldn't have to float if they walk on the bottom. Also, just heavy enough to sink is enough for that. if it floats, then they only have to keep it from tipping over & losing the trapped air, but they wouldn't be at the bottom to walk.
@@jimspetdragons3737 @eikthesheik you could add weight to the boat to balance the "lift" of the air to make it neutrally buoyant. Then the boat would neither rise nor sink. The problem is it would be so heavy that they wouldn't be able to get it up to speed moving forward in a reasonable amount of time.
You were asking about how pirates can tell where they are at sea without a GPS or digital map? Its actually a real world skill of navigating using stars. Sailors, and specifically ship captains, would often study the positions of the constellations and star positions and movement (from the world turning) to determine which direction they are heading and what landmasses would be near based upon maps, a tool called a sextant, and a standard compass. Its actually really fascinating learning about.
Pirates of the Caribbean movie series started with this movie and fans have since watched every sequel with the hope that the next movie would be at least half as good as this first movie. Unfortunately, none of the sequels have been able to do that. This first movie is still easily the best pirate movie ever made.
Another fun reaction. You are a joy to watch a movie with. When this came out it hit all of the right buttons. Every one likes a fun, romantic, action adventure, and one with a lighthearted spirit. Next, there had not been a well made big budget Pirate adventure in years. Now add young stars, an inventive Johnny Depp performance, and every Pirate movie theme for the parents and you have the makings of a blockbuster. But it was Johnny Depp and his quirky and funny portrayal of Captain Jack that captured the hearts and minds around the world. This performance made him an international celebrity and really typecast him to the public. He could no longer be an actor in character roles or small indie movies. He was Dor many years… Captain Jack Sparrow. He became rich, bloated, and a shell of who he once was. For him this became a blessing and a curse.
