I love this game because of one man... Roberto Baggio! I swear I was hating it, because my father loves football and I have issues with him... but then I saw Baggio when he was at his best and I couldn't NOT love the game anymore and NOT be a fan of Italy, if that makes sense. My heart beats Azzurri, and I love it even when they are down, and Baggio created that passion in me!
I did watch "this 90s football" , because Im old. I did Stop watching fotball after Baggio retired. Im pretty sure many people dosnt know , Baggio career almost finish before even started. Back in the day playnig for Vicenza ( at age 16) ,He did sign for Fiorentina. He has a MAJOR injury on his right knee. Fiorentina did waiting him 1 year before He can start play. RESULT.... He did play all his career with 220 stitches in his right knee. Basically all the goals in this clip was scored with 1 leg , He never was at his 100% sadly. ( He has a second huge injury also in his knee).
@1:35 it looks like he feints to pass out wide, the 3 players fall for it and then Baggio clips the ball into space for himself, essentially passing to himself. It's like he knew he had 3 defenders in front of him and was aware, or was gambling that there would be no-one behind him and to his left. To have the presence of mind, the incredible awareness, to see the picture like that and the technique to pull it off is God tier. Still it's not surprising. He produced so many masterpieces throughout his career.
The Serie A of the 80ies and 90ies was the league who came closest to being the NBA of football - and Baggio ruled supreme. He did what he did against the best defenders of all time, in a time that was adverse to his position, defensively oriented and after having had 8 near career-ending knee injuries. I'll take him in his prime over everybody - maybe except that one guy.
Well said. During his time at Fiorentina, apparently many pundits and journalists thought he was the best player in the league. For people to think that when the likes of Maradona, Matthaus, Gullit, Van Basten were at their very best tells us just how high a level Baggio was playing at. Not only did he come up against many of the greatest defenders of all time, he came up against some the best defences and most compact teams of all time, while he played for coaches who did their damnedest to shackle his talent and not let him express himself. It's scary to think what more he could have achieved without his busted knees or what he may have done in Spain had he gone there after leaving Juve.
Oh, yes. We are often known for our defenders and keepers, but we also have a rich tradition of fantasisti...Meazza, Mazzola, Boniperti, Sivori, Rivera, Antognoni, Baggio, Mancini, Zola, Del Piero, Totti...it's just in recent years we haven;'t produced as many talented players as we once had. Cassano had the talent to be at their level but squandered it, and Miccoli, Giovinco, and Insigne, Bernardeschi, and Berardi, although they were good, still weren't at their level in terms of talent or consistent enough either.
Fratelo mio. This is why Italia is one the most legendary teams and no doubt my top 3 favorite. I've never even heard of these players you listed. Thank you for that. Im going to search them all
Don't forget Di Natale! He wasn't necessarily a number 10 but he had fantastic technical quality and was a world class finisher. He's so underrated, and like Baggio, was criminally wasted by the National team. Both of them should have had over 100 caps. Miccoli was a fine talent. As for Giovinco, Insigne and Bernardeschi, they are several levels below the greats. All 3 are weak mentally, often cracking when it really counts and disappearing too much throughout the 90 minutes. I don't think I've ever seen a player miss as many chances as Insigne. Berardi is more grafter than a fantasy player. I do like him a lot, but do wish that he'd take the next step and join a big club. Chiesa is probably our most exciting, dynamic player right now - how we missed him and Spinazzola during the World Cup qualifiers!! My personal favourite is Verratti. He's so composed on the ball and is a truly great dribbler.
Excellent reaction video! Too many youtubers (in their reaction videos) look at their cameras while the video is still playing in the background and miss half of the great moments/fail to acknowledge them. Whereas with you, not only did you keep your focus, you also had a second or third take of the action and was fully aware of the great pieces of skill and how difficult they were to pull off.
Best free-kick ever? Baggio certainly deserves to be in the equation not only because of his success rate, but I would say mostly because of the incredible variety and angles of his shots. Juninho Pernambucano and Sinisa Mihajlovic were also absolute masters. It's difficult to pick the g.o.a.t. I would simply say just choose the player whose style you like the best.
@@losheva I agree with you, but we all have our personal preferences. It's like today, everybody goes on and on and on and on about Messi and CR7, but my favourite players over the past 15 years has been the likes of Pirlo, De Rossi, Iniesta, Xavi, Modric and Verratti... technical midfielders who boss the engine room and provide the base for the likes of Messi to shine. Baggio never had the supporting cast that Messi has had. If Baggio was lucky he'd have one creative genius supporting him (e.g. Pirlo at Brescia) whereas Messi has had two or three at a time. But yes, Baggio was a God whereas Totti, Del Piero, Mancini etc were Emperors, KIngs and Princes
