I don't understand how anime/tag games are getting brought in as examples of it being okay to skip neutral in the context of a discussion about grounded 1v1 fighters. Anime and tag games have always been way less neutral oriented. The speed is faster, there is air blocking, the tools characters have are crazier. That'd be like having a discussion about the speed of combat in a new Souls game and someone saying, "Action games have always been fast - take a look at Devil May Cry."

He resorts to pretending that blazblue and street fighter are the same thing because it provides him what little "evidence" he has and banks on the fact that A: most of his viewership knows nothing about these games or why its like comparing smash bros to tekken and B: most of them are so new their knowledge is basically whatever game they came in on and maybe the game proceeding it if we are lucky so just repeating "its always been like this" is effective.

I think this is one of those situations where Twitter is just not the place to be having the discussion. "Neutral skips" to the people on one side means "fast, advancing moves" but to the other side, it means "fast, advancing moves that give too much reward relative to the risk taken" and in addition to that, the issue is the objective increase in the number of them being put in character's kits. No one can have a nuanced discussion because no one can type more than a paragraph without paying money so it just devolves into disparaging comments and joke quote tweets.

Bro word count or not, nobody on twitter is looking for a discussion, they are looking for a ratio and trying to "dunk on someone" it has never been a productive place.

Once again Sonic you have articulated almost exactly how I feel about recent fighting games and what I've been telling people about them. I'm not a great player. I'm Plat 3 at the highest in SF6 and I think I stopped at Majin rank in DBFZ. I've been playing fighting games for years because there my second favorite genre behind RPGs. I feel very much that when I point out a lot of the points you did I'm immediately dismissed because of my low skill level and it doesn't matter what evidence or thought out criticism I bring to the table. Sajam sat there and said anyone can speak up and say whatever they want and to counter his statement; no one cares what you have to say no matter how true if you're not winning, period. So it's good that there are high level players also seeing this trend of Hyper aggression. I understand why companies are doing it but it feels bad man. Thank you for the content and know you are appreciated.

Neutral skips were the answer to the "legacy skill" problem that plagued developers whenever they wanted new blood. We are past the point of making combos and execution easier since that was never the problem for anyone who had even a passing interest to learn, which is why every new fighting game is trying to put training wheels on every aspect of fighting games. I ran into this playing UNI since it just dropped only to get blown up after getting used to the latest wave of fighting games. Neutral skipping is now the norm, and we know it's working because new blood is coming in....but at what cost, yeah, the skill floor is lower than it's ever been but the second you get even remotely high in skill and you aren't using "insert Neutral skip function" then you are cooked.

Kaz mightve been serious, or he mightve been joking. Either way, he is/was still one of the best FG players, any genre, in the world. His knowledge of neutral is second to non. Shown by him consistently beating the best of the best in GG, DBFZ, MvC etc etc. Basically, Sajams argument is: "Nothing in nature can be unnatural". Nothing in neutral can truly be "not-neutral". If your character has a neutral skip its part of your neutral. Now, wherever its broken or not is another discussion.

@@96bmb Kaz is definitively one of the best in the world and he deserves all the respect. The point of the joke was that back in the day was about one character in particular and that's okay beacause It fits his playstyle. This is a great and insightful video, Sonic. Discussions like these make me think (and worry) deeply about the future of fighting games in terms of the overall game design of a title. I get the feeling that most of these devs are copying the elements of successful, mechanically easier, fighting games without actually knowing what made said fighting games "successful". Which, in turn, creates this homogenized feeling (for myself, specifically) between recent releases in these past few years.

Yup you nailed it on the head but if you complain and notice the shift apparently your written off as a meme of someone who just thinks old games were better, well guess what they were. They were more crazy in some ways but also designed better overall with unique characters and interactions that werent so homogenized and system mechanic heavy. Now every just holds forward, doesnt block and mashes on fucking wake up.

IMO the neutral skips and braindead tools in fighting games are not the problem by itself, but the way they seem to be the main tools of a bunch of characters in modern fighting games or they are directly tight to system mechanics (for instance the full roster have access to it) so those options basically become the meta of the game at most levels of play, what do I care about footsies spacing game plan screen positioning or whatever, when I can skip neutral, and be plus or advantageous in any way on my opponents face and then forcing him to guess a 50/50 that can effortlessly take 30 - 50% of his heal... and then repeat... and repeat again... I know that if every character can do it, yeah... technically is "balance" and so, but that's no the point, the point is that it feels wrong and even looks like ass from a spectator perspective (like Kakeru eating 8 throws in a loop in a tournament) I don't want to see that shiet in a tournament, I want to see fucking Daigo parry, Jwong comeback, GO1 defense, those kinds of insane situations in tight tournaments, no a fucking gambling game every 3 seconds, if I wanted to see that I would being playing free gachas with big ass waifus, not fighting games (with big ass waifus too) but that's just my opinion

Playing Metera in a game where half the cast has a 2 button neutral skip feels miserable. You have to work hard as shit to stay safe and create the range to be able to zone, which is already hard when everyone can chase you around 66Ling over and over. Then you have to win a ton of interactions to get a life advantage. They press a button, hit you from across the screen into a 50-60% combo, and then all the work you've put in is gone. Lucilius low/high teleport is a war crime. You fail to check it and you're dead, and the longer the match goes the more often he can do it.

Playing against charas with all these neutral skips in gbvsr as a chara with absolutely none of these feels absolutely fked up. Altho neutral skips have been in games for forever, in gbvsr, it srsly does way too much damage and corner carry, and closer up its borderline unreactable closer up cos of the screen freeze. One of the worst parts is that, my character, as a setplay zoner, cannot and should not deal that kind of damage from range, but neither should they. They srsly need to tone down the corner carry and damage from all of these 50 meter neutral skips. I guess right or punish their mistake and do 1.8k. I guess wrong or make 1 mistake and i lose 50% and im in the corner. Risk reward is absolutely fked up in that game. And the issue is that most of the characters have it
@guiltyoregano7131
@guiltyoregano7131 5 месяцев назад
I think the biggest problem is risk reward. You get blown up from these natural skips or get good pressure from them. I dont think they would be bad as system mechanics if balanced properly. granblue has 66m, which is basically a more balanced 66l. You get punished if blocked, and if you hit it, you just get a knockdown. This full screen move with all reward and no downside is the problem.

I had a shocking realization a few days ago. With how absolutely bonkers BlazBlue can be, I think it's a better, more balanced game than Granblue Rising. BlazBlue has tons of nonsense to be sure, but not everyone had a free ride into your face in every matchup. Combos require knowledge about starters and counter hits for optimal performance. It is satisfying to play. This is coming from someone who thinks the series got much worse, mechanically speaking, after CSX. Granblue Rising feels homogenous and stifling. In my opinion DNF: Duel is one of the best games to come out in years. You can see how much the landscape of the FGC has changed based on how much venom it receives. It has no welfare mechanics. Everything is a major commitment. The neutral game is crazy. Jumping is all or nothing. Simply by listing these things, it's obvious why it's hated. I'm a crazy old man so I'll let myself out. There are clouds that need a good talkin-to. Great video. You'll be hated because you speak truth.

I think half of the reason Drive Rush is so oppressive in SF6 is because of the fact you start with full Drive meter every round. It just never ends. You start with full meter and you aren't building any when it's full, so you might as well try and Drive Rush in. If it hits, you still have enough meter to DR cancel and do good damage/corner carry/oki. In fact, you still have enough meter to threaten the DI now that your opponent is in the corner. It's just really good. A lot of neutral skips in the earlier games were at least locked behind meter that you had to build first. Now, shit's going crazy right from the start. Never thought this aspect would be an issue, I originally thought starting with meter is hype, but it is the reason behind why you can so often convert into big ridiculous damage.

The only two older Street FIghter games with skip neutral system mechanics are Alpha 2 CC and Alpha 3 V-ISM. And that's what those games ultimately devolved into at the highest level. CC lvl1 you lose half your life. Same with V-ISM combos. And in Alpha 3 you start with full bar.

@@VapidZero I've always thought that CCs were dumb and I don't like Alpha 3 because you start with a full bar and can unga from round 1 start. But before Alpha 2, 1 bar CC became the difinitive high level strategy. Alpha 2 was actually my favorite Street Fighter game. And I really enjoy CvS2 when not played at the highest level when it's only A and K groove and a handful of viable characters.

Honestly, I'm not really all that good at fighting games. I can't tell you what makes for good balance, good neutral, good neutral skips... I just don't know. What I do know is whether or not I'm having fun. When Zeta up backs into a safe on block divekick that does 50% of my HP, I'm not having fun. When Nier gets a 50% combo off a DP, I'm not having fun. I don't really care why those things exist, what they're counter balancing, etc... but I do know that I hate those things, and I'm going to stop playing if those things aren't addressed. I completely understand that not everything is solved. Maybe a top 1 character is actually like top 10, I don't know. Changing things keeps the game fresh and interesting, I don't really care if there's some secret tech that invalidates a character if it gets discovered 2 years from now. I'm not having fun now, and I'd like to start having fun now.

I think Wild Assault is a good example of a "neutral skip" mechanic It's resource intensive regardless, it's never unreactable and you can almost always check it with 2 frame throw on reaction, it changes wildly from character to characters, it works well as a tool for rush down/zoning/whiff punishing; and it scales combos so you're incentivise to use it out normals, but you can't combo from most slash/punches/kicks so you have to gattling into heavies or sweeps to naturally combo creating mind games as it rarely is a true string cause as you can check it with a grab on reaction The only issues with it for right now is the risc build and white wild assault, every thing else is fine about it. I really like it, my favorite charging attack mechanic in like any fighting game

I think they should balance 66L by reducing its range by shortening the dash distance to maybe around the range of djeeta fL or something, while keeping its plus frames and comboability. This way the move still has reason to be used, but now you have to be a lot closer to hit it. They could maybe increase the startup by a couple frames to make it high risk (short range and relatively slow) but high reward (adv on block, big conversion on hit)

I think if you want these videos to have more debate/argumentative power, you should do them a lot more organized and edited, preferably with a well thought out script about how you're going to respond, and so that you can articulate your points better. As it stands, the video feels a lot more like a rant, which also makes it longer than it needs to be. Glad RU-vid Recommended this to me and I agree with everything you said. People with Sajam's opinion automatically think we don't know that moves which skip neutral have existed forever. We know, we just don't like that its become a system staple/design philosophy for SO many FGs. Its homogenizing the genre and hurting one of the best aspects of it which is that very basic RPS graph that you put up. Neutral skips are fine when they are character specific tools which don't always lead to huge damage AND advantage situations for the one doing the Skip. They're boring and annoying when EVERYONE can do them due to system mechanics and only make matches and games feel somewhat samey in how they play out. DR, Corner Carry, Throw Loop/Pressure at the wall. Repeat. EVEN TEKKEN which arguably is the most neutral heavy FG, has characters with moves that can skip it. Dragunov with his running 2(plus on block, sidestep able, Big Combo on CH small or none on normal hit), Julia(Lashing Arrow, small combo on hit, -3 to Neutral on block), Kunimitsu(Set Dash 2 arguably the dumbest one, Advancing Safe Tracking Mid, CH combo starter). People are generally okay with these skips because not everyone has them(maybe save for Kuni's). But then T8 has Heat Activation. And I would say that Heat Burst is in a sense a Neutral Skip. Heat Burst on Activation is a power crush(armors through any attacks that aren't lows), lightly safe on block move with crazy stupid range and allows the activator to start more oppressive offense. Even T8 is doing this thing of homogenizing the neutral. The only thing which keeps it feeling less oppressive than 2D fighters is the 3rd Dimension.
@VapidZero
@VapidZero 5 месяцев назад
Theres a problem with some of this though, Drag WR2 is very step/walkable, lashing arrow is a high so its duckable and also very linear, and set is probably the biggest offender but shes a cynically designed late game DLC char that everyone more or less agrees are way over tuned so point taken on this char but at least its -9 so her turn is completely over. The only one out of these that is plus on block is drags, unless you land lashing arrow pretty much at tip range which is very very difficult on a resisting opponent, and it is also the worst one in the list. Now combine that with the fact that drag gets plus in your face, he has no demoman/hellsweep to threaten you with, he has to resort to the most basic mixup that all chars do with jab/mid/low poke, so being minus against him isn't as bad as it sounds especially compared to chars with legit scary mixup like a kazuya or something. I kinda already went over heat in another comment, which has been changed from CNT to CBT already, and the players themselves have had time with three different builds to feel it out. If you are using heat exclusively for a single time access to plus frames, I think it's a huge waste. If you do the most braindead thing which is just to pop it with heat burst you flat out lose 1/3rd the meter which is pretty dogshit considering you don't get that back unlike drive rush, once its gone, its gone until the next round, while the other guy possibly still has theirs and can use it to get back recoverable health which will make comebacks a little easier against you even if you were winning. I think you are going to be massively wasting heat in all reality doing that, and its not even that good for that purpose compared to drive in 6 that is very spammable and recovers unlike heat which you pop and lose. The range is very dependent on a char to char basis and I'm not seeing this whole "more oppressive" seeing as the only thing in heat is adding a bit of chip damage and possibly access to enhanced moves that eat up the bar even faster.
@ATC43
@ATC43 5 месяцев назад
@@VapidZero I actually totally agree with you concerning the specific characters I mentioned. Its why I listed them. Because even though they are "neutral skips" they each have clear counterplay. With heat, there is not real clear counterplay for the activation save for being far enough away, unlike those other moves which you can interact with in the moment. Again, not nearly as bad as 2d games since Tekken is 3d and spacing it much more possible, but the same design ethos exists in T8 as all these other FGs. With Heat I honestly did not notice that raw activation took a 3rd of the bar. I need to jump on the demo and check that out. In which case I am happy about that. My point is more that the move still forces a complete bypass of the neutral and most of what is happening in it and that every character can do it any point in a round. From what I've played of the Demo the move hits almost 1.5 characters away AND you can cancel the actual attack coming out, which makes it VERY difficult to impossible to whiff punish. And let's be real, added chip in a game like Tekken where one launch equals 60 percent of your life is more oppressive. I don't think being able to attack and get back health negates that fact. I do like that there is a clear disadvantage to using it raw and honestly the most recent gameplay showcase made me soften up a bit to its inclusion, but I still feel that it is a bit degenerative to the neutral. Just less so than I previously thought, and definitely compared to things like 66L and Drive Rush.
@VapidZero

No problem man I'm wasn't trying to be mean or anything just trying to add some clarity to some really complicated stuff for anyone who may not know tekken that well. Lots of people have been labbing the shit out of 8 because we were all worried about 8 from the initial talk of the system before any of the builds got released (and cracked lmao). But after playing it long enough heat honestly doesn't change the fact that you are still playing tekken for 80% of the game the way we've always played it, and when heat does come in, it honestly doesn't feel like something taking a shit on me. The optimistic attitude around 8 is real and not just because shiny new thing. But don't get it twisted, everyone is expecting the actual per-character balance to be fucked up initially cause it isn't getting the same arcade playtesting period that 7 got you know, and arcade T7 was a nightmare lmao. @@ATC43

My thoughts might not matter much since I am a modern player but these system mechanics take away so much depth and the ability to gauge someone's skill. I feel like making things more character specific drives the player to love the game because it has a unique element then when you blow up system mechanics the player is just doing the same thing. And if everyone does the same thing then why not pick the character that does it the best?

i didnt know what was bothering me in rise & SF6 still i watched this and i finally understand whats been bothering me . Recent games have been making so instead of Neutral skips just knocking them down or just closing the distance , Now they are combo starts or completely safe when hit. Granbule sadly has both , Sf6 has Drive rush and Strive has Red wild assault . I dont get why we shifted into this new meta of this , but eventually its gonna have negative effects on the market of fighting games going forward . And the community as well , so i hope that in time people realize this instead of being like this guy and saying its a part of neutral . Great video as usaully sol but man fighting games are just nutz now and its gonna be hard to recommend games like these to my friends

Drive rush is not ok bro. In soo many ways. I mean, there is the neutral skip and mental stack part, but there is also stuff like not having to worry too much about hit confirming. When i hit someone with Juri's crouching MK i'm allways at an advantage because if i hit the person i get a combo but If they block i get a mix up where i hit standing MP and now the opponent has to guess between throw, frame trap and shimmy. I understand people were happy about moving on from sf5 but bro sf6 is just a new sf5. Offensive play is too much rewarded and they even brought throw loops back. Also, the corner game is the worst in the entire SF series with things like drive impact and input issues.

I really enjoyed Sajams content when i first started watching him a while back. But for years now he has rubbed me the wrong way with how he speaks to his chat and how he responds to questions and other things. Never have I listened to someone that unintentionally gives off such a superiority complex constantly with every word they speak. He comes off like such an arrogant egotistical "know whats best / know it all" for any and all things. It makes him seem like such an asshole when in reality he really isn't. He really is knowledgeable and CAN create really great discussions. But the part that anyone can just feel after hearing him for a couple minutes is he is not trying to listen or hear your side, its like in his mind he KNOWS he is right and what he thinks is right and he projects it with how he speaks. This then makes him give off the high horse vibe with everything he says. It feels like its always 1 sided with him and it can never and will never be an actual or discussion or debate where he might change his mind because in his mind he already knows whats best etc. I just want to hear him genuinely have a thought or feeling of "ah okay i can see where you're coming from" without an arrogant tone to his voice. I don't think he means to sound this way, but man I just can't enjoy his content anymore. To each their own. Please no hate to him, I just wanted to express that "feeling" that I feel like most people who aren't already fans of his get right away when listening to him

I cannot say the same for 66L but a lot of the ultimate skills (not all but a lot) in gbvsr have some form of reliable counter, if i can beat it then idc if everyone has it, cus they'll have to think of another way to approach. Its like the big ass normals in dnf, they basically skip neutral for you but if you whiff it its GGs So im not so with you on that point You never mentioned wild assault in strive (so far from what I've watched but people keep mentioning it) Edit: finished the vid 👍 WA is not a good neutral skip except for white WA which can still be thrown on reaction but better said than done If The other WAs are done in neutral you get reward but if you get tagged during the WA startup you are going to die and lose half your burst for misusing it But 66L, drive rush are ridiculous The counter play is not consistent Also +6 on a gaurd cancel is a MADNESS you are correct on these ones. (Also what if the game slowed down instead of pausing when you drive rushed) The late throw tech in granblue is a 50/50 imo, its mad autopilot to just mash on throw, but the advantage is still on the attackers favour enough for me to be ok with it (lose health and minus on tech) Don't be afraid to share your opinions cus of Twitter its not s real place And Also DASHU ERU🗣️🔥🔥🔥

You pop heat at the start of the round, it runs out very quickly and even quicker if you use a move that consumes the bar, then its gone poof. Otherwise, you use a heat engager as a whiff punish which is something you would do anyways into some plus frames and using up the meter so you cant decide to hold onto it or not, or you use the heat smash in neutral and lose 1/3rd the bar immediately. The last option is If you can kill/you need the wall carry, you can spend the heat meter on a combo. Heat in tekken 8 and drive in SF6 are not even remotely the same thing. Considering you get your recoverable health back, you have a LOT of reasons to not just pop your heat mindlessly just to use it, and once its gone, its gone until the next round. T8 Heat is a little more complicated than T7 rage drive but at the end of the day, every round has little to do with heat honestly for most of the round, not much different than how drive operated in 7. Heat is a system added to the tekken engine, drive IS sf6 in every meaningful way, that is a gigantic difference. As 8 goes on everyone expects heat to be adjusted and tweeked and that won't be very hard as its just something ontop of the legacy engine, people are seriously unsure how to even address drive rush because its so integral to the game. You fix the input eating by getting rid of the freeze, but then it becomes unreactable, if you try to make it more expensive, most chars are going to have horrendous combos because just comboing NORMALLY uses drive. Tekken 8 combos are the same way they have ever been and people are already thinking that spending the heat meter for anything but a guaranteed kill or getting wall is actually a huge waste of it so heat is very tertiary to them.

Sajam: “...Offense needs to be stronger than Defense…” Hoo boy, here we go. This quote here is what really makes me confused tbh. I don’t know why he thinks this to be completely honest. He explains in his video that: if defense was too strong, people would be bored of trying to constantly attempt to get in on a character that has “Too Strong” of defense. On paper, I could understand why someone would think that. Happy Chaos was a character that not only could play aggressively and get mad reward from it, he could also pick you off in the long-range, essentially barring you from playing the game. But here’s the kicker. HC is in a game where, not only has the OG GGX formula been cast to the wayside, but has been replaced by systems that reward rash and ignorant decision making, which lead to characters like Sol, Ram, May etc. being able to play like monkeys, and never getting checked for doing so. On top of that, every returning character had their moves altered to have less options overall to deal with the bullshit that came their way. Yes, even their character specific defensive options. Baiken is a prime example of this. In XX and XRD, she was a Defensive Demon that rewarded players for smart parrying and a degree of situation awareness. In Strive, ARCSYS remade her to be the same, bland, boring, mid-range combo fiend that lacks personality. If she and the others had their options like they did in XRD, she and the others would have a much better time fighting HC. Sajam seemed to really drop the ball on this topic and it’s irritating to see him being such a smug bastard about it. Modern Fighters have toned down the defensive aspects in favor of Aggression because Tommy just wants to press buttons to get to Master Celestial Legend God Rank online, and for some reason, Boomer FG companies are catering to those players alone, when they should still stick with their dedicated player base. My bottomline is that: I’d rather have a game that is too defensive driven, and I had to deal with people turtling, than me having to deal with monkeys throwing their shit around because the poop is +4 on block and they're in my face for little to no resource cost. #MakeDefenseGreatAgain

You're massively over-thinking this. It's way simpler than you make it out to be. On a meta-level, if defense is stronger than offense the disadvantage is always on the attacker, which means high level play would have nobody attacking each other. The argument starts and stops there.

I appreciated the response to Sajam’s POV, I think it’s really useful to have an informed perspective of both sides of the argument. I’m pretty new to the competitive side of fighting games, especially 2D fighters, with SF6 being the first one I’ve really played and tuned into. Given that, there’s probably a lot of nuance, muscle memory, and gameplay feel that I’m just missing that make it a bit more difficult to me to understand the distinction you’re drawing between neutral skips tied to system mechanics and those that are character-specific. I can’t really speak on GBVSR because I haven’t played it that much (and from what I’ve seen, the criticism of dash lights seems to be pretty warranted). But for SF6, I do think that, given the combination of system mechanics and character toolkits in the game, there are a diversity of matchups and a decent level of risk to the system mechanic-level neutral skip options. Drive rushes are, for the most part, able to be checked. Other plus on block character-specific neutral skip specials, like heavy spinning knuckle or heavy dragon lash, have enough startup to make them possible (though difficult) to consistently check. And there are examples of patient and methodical play succeeding, with Snake Eyez’s qualification to Capcom Cup coming to mind as an example (especially with how he decided to block vs. parry the zoning tools JP has depending on the amount of damage they do to the drive gauge so that his parry couldn’t be baited out and punished). The Dee Jay example that you kept showing seems to be more of a criticism of Dee Jay’s drive rush in particular, not the system mechanic in general. I guess, the thing that confuses me most about your argument is that, especially in the context of SF6, your biggest problem with things like drive rush seem to be character-specific - why is that so different from the character-specific neutral skips of the past?
@Randy-zw7mk
@Randy-zw7mk 5 месяцев назад
Good stuff. I think these are all good criticisms and you make good points as far as him not addressing what people are upset about. I just don't get what's wrong with neutral skips being a part of the mechanics in and of itself. I agree that drive rush and 66L need tuning badly, but I think having strong mechanics create a better balance that's easier to maintain. It comes at the expense of some homogenization, but when done right it allows for more characters to be viable. For me, wish list that would fix 66L is making it dependent on spacing for frame advantage like 66H. Drive rush just needs to reign in the variability of distance characters can go (ie broken characters go less far, low tier go a little further) and be more expensive now that people know how good it is.

I honestly dont see the problem, i see it worst in the cases were only 1 or 2 characters can do it because turns the game imposible to play if you are against one of them, but in a game like GBFV is just another universal mechanic, so one more thing to be aware of and thats it, also less neutral is more fun, like Maximillian dood said one time when someone asked him if dnf duel had neutral, his answer was "no, the game is fun" and thats what this is about, the most fun games out there are completly broken at a neutral level, and ill have that any time instead of a slow one step back and one foward match when if you are against one of the characters that can skip neutral you are screwed, if everyone has the option, then is not unfair anymore

Sajam is right but I don't think he gave a fair representation to the other side of the argument. The main reason people hate Neutral skipping is when characters that don't deserve it are able to easily get into an offensive barrage without much risk at all Drive rush is a fun system mechanic but man does it favor some characters way way too much or it adds to an already great character (you could also mention the 66L here). This is an issue that will probably be patched though so on principle he is right

hmm if neutral skips such as DR are system mechanics then there is another neutral occuring one level above. i think its a good thing. not necessarily in all games but in sf6 at least they got it pretty right. there is still traditional neutral going on in fact, but thinks like DR puts you at risk in certain distances (character specific) but thats something that can either be challenged on reaction, preemptively checked by certain buttons, or just empty jumped in most cases. even simply blocked, because the block strings following are not that insane, usually there are gaps after the 2nd hit that you can retake action. well in the end i get it, you dont like SF6 because it changed something that you liked, and i feel terribly sorry for that, but i on the other hand really like it

Poison's flip kick: Minus on block. Only combos on counter hit. Dragon Lash Kick: Plus on block. Combos on anyone crouching or on counter hit. Yeah, you can perfect parry it, but that shit is annoying. It's hard to do unless you're looking for it specifically out of all the options he has to just delete any space between you. He has Drive Rush, Low Forward, Fireball, Jump etc. If you're hard focused on dealing with one, you have a harder time reacting to the others. I'd prefer no parry over moves covering huge distances and forcing me into a mixup situation because my defense wasn't active enough in that moment. Sorry, i was looking for 5 options, and blocking was an unsafe option. ADDENDUM: Personally, i just think game devs are super interested in making a game that's exciting to watch. I think they've forgotten about tuning the disadvantage state to account for the sheer number of "fuck your space" attacks or maneuvers in the game. Gbvs brave counter is just ludicrous and there is very little actual counter play, while sf6 is almost entirely worthless.

This all sounds like a skill issue

The argument of, “not everyone can do this…” is a terrible argument when it comes to competitive play. Yeah, no shit not everyone can. That’s why the ones who can will be winning tournaments and owning while others. Are struggling to get out of gold. Not everyone in Counterstrike can have 60% headshot rates or awp amazingly fast. Does Counterstrike nerf the ability to do so? No, that would be dumb af. Get better and you too can react to things.

You do not understand human reactions or frame data at all. If you can react to sub i18 moves, explain to me why 2D players did not make a dent in the T7 pro scene by literally rendering the fundamental mixup of low poke/safe mid/jab solved by their reactions, despite having two characters that were busted the entire lifespan of the game from arcade all the way to the final patch. Considering your only other comment is the brainless twitter-tier "skill issue" I don't expect a good answer.

This is a false equivalence. Getting headshots may be a skill but firing the weapon itself is not. If it was even remotely difficult to aim and shoot the gun at an opponent then people would call the game trash and not bother to develop the skill to do it properly. In fighting games it is inherently more difficult to fully control your character and have them do what you want then in an fps. And hilariously part of that is because the fps genre has continually made their controls easier and easier to understand and internalize. Yet when a fighting game spreads what would have been character exclusive power through system mechanics and simplifies inputs it’s the death of the genre. Pay no mind to the clear and apparent rise in popularity over the last 10 years.

At no point or time has anyone actually proven this wild claim that the FG doing better recently directly stems from lowering the skill floor or skill ceiling in certain games. If that was true, why was strive and granblue being outperformed by T7, a game that made very minimal concessions for ease of play. T7 is the highest selling tekken game of all time, complete with KBD and electrics, which are also still present in 8. It also implies that the only thing keeping a larger audience away from fighting games is mechanical skill when the reality is the main talking point is and always should have been most people's inability to play a competitive game for any extended period of time without getting pissed and quitting. Unlike the most popular multiplayer games which are all universally team based games, FG's are 1v1 with nothing but the option of personal accountability. Any MOBA, any shooter, any big multiplayer game contains the single thing that allows the mass public to continue playing, blame shifting. Every one of these games, go to browse the talk from people who play them, you won't go 5 minutes without "i cant carry this useless team", "team too heavy", "this guy ruined my game", ect. They have something to blame which preserves ego and allows them to play on with minimal impact on themselves. Btw, go on counter strike and just shoot an AK for the first time, I guarantee you, your control of the spread will be abysmal. Yet, people somehow don't demand that change and even call it just part of learning how to play the game and a fundamental aspect of developing skill in it. Make the game as easy as you want, you'll never solve the fact that the average person does not find 1v1 competition fun or something they want to do for an extended period of time.@@SH1NK1R01

@@VapidZero ah yes t7 the bastion of skill with no casualization what soever. Remind me. What's a rage art? Because i distinctly remember many veteran players malding out over the addition of the rage art and rage drive system. The addition of multiple new characters to the game with shorter move lists and easier combos. Did you not notice that basically every character that wasn't a returner had less total moves that were all much more straight forward? This following a tekken that was buried in the dirt and abandoned (tag 2) by the general audience due to having an overwhelming cast size and expecting you to learn 2 characters to play. as far as evidence.....you can like just look at the sales and general viewership/discussion. its blatantly obvious that modern fgs are more popular then they have been since the end of the arcade era. People say covid killed original GBVS but t7 had bad net play and didnt fall off during that time, dragon ball stayed strong for a while too. The reality is people simply werent as interested in how that game played and are more interested in how it plays now. sonic even said it himself that people hated how slow paced the last game was. sf5 was hated for this same exact reason, and only improved in the public eye once they changed this. and no it does not imply that its the only thing keeping people away. that's just something you believe because in your head its all absolutes. You aren't capable of acknowledging that its a clear factor unless it becomes the only factor for some reason. and again you make a false equivalence. People dont complain about it because they just go play a different fps. You think its some massive coincidence that valorant, cod, battlefield, and many other fps games constantly dwarf cs in sales despite its pedigree? The fps fanbase massively dwarfs most other genres. So looking at just cs in isolation can easily fool you in to thinking its alot of people. But the worst cod release still has more players each year. hell if you want to look at another genre look at BR games. the most popular till this day is the one marketed to children. And in mobas since you mentioned them. LOL still reigns as the most popular even though DOTA is clearly the more complicated and refined one. Your last point is also strange. did you think these changes to the games were meant to solve 1v1 frustration? Should the devs just do nothing? They dont need you to become a pro or grind the game for years and fall in love. They need you to buy a copy and have enough of a good time to want to buy the next one. Alot of people in the fgc specifically seem to be convinced that the highest level of play is of the highest importance. Its not. it cant be or the games become unprofitable. no one wants to compete in a dead game either. People would much rather compete in a game that has some bullshit but is popping off.
