It was Lucas's dialogue and direction that cemented Lloyd's midiclorically bad acting. Almost everyone sucked in the prequels except maybe MacGregor. This was on Lucas. The cast is solid with great performances before and since. I never blamed Lloyd. It sucks that he got so much shit.

“He’s such a good actor”. It breaks my heart to know that young Jake Loyd endured so much hate and vitriol after this movie, that he eventually gave up acting and doesn’t even like to talk about Star Wars anymore... Fandoms can be so destructive sometimes...
@Galiant2010

And it just goes to show how much people will just hate on whatever is new. I can't wait for another 20 years to go by and see more love for the sequels as the kids that grew up with those get a voice online. Just as people from my generation who grew up with the prequels being released have been able to spread more love for them despite the hate they got at release from the, at the time, older generations who only grew up with the OT.
@kyoai
@kyoai 2 года назад
@@Galiant2010 I disagree that people disliked this movie just because it was new. It is objectively worse than the original trilogy, with too much needless goofiness, an over-reliance on CGI and worse writing. That being said and I would not blame Jake Loyd one bit for that, as it is pretty much the fault of George Lucas and his team, and I still enjoy the movie for what it is, despite its big flaws.
@malyvo0
@malyvo0 2 года назад
@@Galiant2010 Problem is the sequels are not only bad storytelling wise, they are also made from an "entitled" position which makes them hard to remedy. There is a whole expanded universe of games and novels with amazing stories Disney simply discarded (they made an official statment about it!) and substituted it with incoherent SJW stuff and proclaimed that as canon instead. The golden rule of art is - if you can't maintain the quality of a piece, let alone improve it, don't mess with it. But Disney did. That's what I and many others hold against the sequels.

@Jeremy Brookes He was a twentysomething year old dancer when Lucas cast him... and it was essentially a voice over role for all practical purposes. I understand he performed on-set, but it wasn't like anybody knew what he looked like. He's likely made more money from his association with Star Wars than he would have otherwise. Does that excuse stupid people who lash out at actors for being in a crappy role / movie? Of course not... but I'm not going to play along with any goofball guilt trips. I proudly proclaim my overall disdain for Jar-Jar... while also proudly proclaiming that all the blame falls only at the feet of Lucas. Also, just glancing at his resume on IMDB, he still seems to get semi-regular non-Star Wars related work. He's probably more likely to get a gig than Hayden Christensen at this point.

fun fact about the genius of John Williams: The cheery music playing in the parade at the end of this movie is actually the theme of Emperor Palpatine, sped up and put into a major scale. Compare with the whole sequence between Luke, Vader and the Emperor in Episode VI, where you can hear the original, sinister piece. He faces insurmountable odds and even has this cult of magic users who at all times attempt to peek at his plans and want nothing more than to see him fail. Why? Because they see his religion and ideas as contrary to their own and therefore "dangerous". I loved the kids books about Obi-Wan being Qui-Gon's apprentice before episode 1. The Jedi Apprentice series. He was basically cast out of the Jedi Order because no one would take him as an apprentice. He was being sent away to an agricultural planet where he could use his Force powers to aid in the healthy growth of crops. But Qui-Gon was also on that ship on a mission and they ended up working together and that's when he finally took Obi-Wan on as an apprentice. And learning that Qui-Gon's first apprentice had turned to the dark side was so intriguing. Like, he had 2 apprentices in his lifetime, and almost a 3rd with Anakin, and the first and Anakin both fell to the dark side, and so did his master, Dooku. He was surrounded by people falling to the dark side. I'm not sure what it means, but it's still always stuck out to me.

Gotta love the clip of Qui-Gon, Darth Maul and Obi-Wan and the different ways their characters react to their brief separation from each other: Qui-Gon: Withdraws his lightsaber, kneels and begins to meditate Darth Maul: Keeps his eyes locked on Qui-Gon and begins pacing back and fourth impatiently like a tiger in a cage. Obi-Wan: Stands anxiously waiting to rush back into the fight, concerned for the safety of his master.

Obi-Wan Kenobi tbh that’s one of the many problems of this trilogy. You barely get to know the characters. In the original you know off the bat everyone’s name. Obi-Wans name gets mentioned in the beginning of this film but like you say everyone misses it. Qui-Gons name doesn’t get mentioned until they meet Shmi and so for the entire first half you just refer to him as Liam Neeson.

The Prequels have a lot of good ideas but are let down by bad direction and inconsistent writing (The Clone Wars TV series actually capitalises on a lot of that missed potential and created better stories and characters than the Prequel films). I always felt kinda sorry for Jar Jar, don’t get me wrong he’s VERY annoying (when you put all your comic relief into a single character then they have to actually be funny! Or else you’ve F’d up royal) but he became the poster boy of the prequels and the bad feelings for everything else that’s wrong with these movies latched onto him as well. yeah, literally. The movies never told us that, but according the books, the Jedi test children's blood for midichlorians and take them away from their parents when they are still babies. Jedi don't want their members to have any attachments to other people, because you know, feelings make you vulnerable and stuff. Yet they pair young kids in training with a Master who will become teacher, older sibling, and parent all in one, so they are GOING to form a bond/attachment with this older Jedi...typically in their adolescence, a time when they are most emotionally vulnerable. There are countless novels and comics based on the idea of an unstable Master screwing up their apprentice's thinking or Jedi who go off the deep end when their Master is killed.

The thing that always bugged me is that Qui-Gon explains it later pretty clearly but all the prequel haters still said that it "demystified" the force or reduced it to bacteria when in reality he explains that they're more like a radio antenna that connects you to the Force. Like, here's the exact quote from the movie: "Life forms living together for mutual advantage. Without the midi-chlorians, life could not exist, and we would have no knowledge of the Force. They continually speak to you, *telling you the will of the Force*. When you learn to quiet your mind, you will hear them speaking to you." That's it and nothing more is ever said about them in any of the movies. Yet the haters made a huge deal out of it and now because of them everyone thinks The Force = midichlorians.

@henryofskalitz5212
@henryofskalitz5212 4 года назад
@@JingIeFett The force does = midichlorians and I'm not a prequel hater. I love the prequels, still think midichloricans were a moronic idea, which they were. So glad Disney has decided to retcon them. It is literally a measurement that shows your potential force power, it also indicated an actual, measurable substance within the body that you can sample, which completely destroyed the entire point of the force users being a religion. This means that there is no ambiguity of anything, it is just you have midichloricans you are at least somewhat in tune with the force, or you have no midichlorians and you don't. It basically turns the entire Jedi-Sith thing into a game of top trumps. Whoever has the higher midichlorian count inherently has an advantage and has little to do with control or training.
@JingIeFett
@JingIeFett 4 года назад
@@henryofskalitz5212 Completely wrong. *"Life forms living together for mutual advantage. Without the midichlorians, life could not exist, and we would have no knowledge of the Force. They continually speak to you, telling you the will of the Force. When you learn to quiet your mind, you will hear them speaking to you."* Where does it say in that quote that The Force = midichlorians? Yeah, exactly. And, Disney didn't retcon midichlorians, at least not that I'm aware of. Quite the contrary and Baby Yoda is the proof. I'll come back to that. If you think it has little to do with training, then you completely missed the point of the whole prequel trilogy. Anakin had the highest midichlorian count of all time, higher than even Yoda. So if midichlorian count was all that mattered, why did Obi-Wan beat him? Simple really. Obi-Wan had more experience, training, and discipline. It's not just about raw midichlorian count, if it was then Obi-Want would have gotten wrecked. That's what Anakin thought and it was his downfall. You can have all the midichlorians in the universe. But if you don't know how to quiet your mind and listen to them, it's meaningless. On the other hand, you could have a single midichlorian in your entire body, but if you're able to listen to it with complete clarity, you'd be just as powerful. Midichlorians tell you the will of the Force, they are not the Force itself. That's why it's practically a religion and why there's such an emphasis on meditation and training and discipline. Why is Baby Yoda able to do what he does despite little or no training? Why is he more naturally in tune with The Force? Midichlorians are the explanation for the genetic component. It's why Leia was force sensitive even in the OT, despite no training. It's why Luke can say "The Force is strong in my family"--that can only be true if there's a genetic component, even if he didn't know it. That doesn't stop Luke/Anakin from being the chosen one from the prophecy, it doesn't invalidate the semi-religious aspect. See, if anyone could just become a jedi equally easily and genetics played no part whatsoever, then there'd be nothing stopping Obi-Wan from grabbing any random orphan off the street of Tatooine and training an army of jedi, instead of focusing on just Luke. Or Palpatine from training every stormtrooper to have force abilities to improve their aim or to interrogate people. It's why if Luke and Han Solo were both to train to become jedi at the same time, Luke would probably pick it up much faster while Han would likely struggle more and take longer to reach the same level. Midichlorians are simply the reason why some people are more naturally gifted in the force than others. It doesn't mean other people can't also become jedi, just that they might struggle more or have to train harder. It's similar to how some people are naturally good at sports or naturally good at playing the piano and pick it up quickly. They still need to train, and someone with less raw talent but more training can still do better. Like Obi-Wan vs Anakin at Mustafar.

Love your genuine reactions. Really enjoying this series. It's sad Jake Lloyd was bullied mercilessly growing up after filming this. He's battling some serious mental health demons in real life now. Hopefully he see's this video and learns people do appreciate what he contributed to Star Wars. Keep up the great content! Subscribed.

Your reactions are so fun! Seeing people react with positivity to the prequels makes me happy. Many Star Wars fans have an almost obsessive hate for the prequels and/or sequels that makes it very hard to be a new SW fan (at least for me). I can't wait for your reaction to the rest of the SW films!

"Midichlorians? Are they referring to mitochondria?" It is indeed exactly a play on that. The whole notion of "midichlorians" living in symbiosis with all other life forms is directly taken from one of the real-world biological theories about the origins of mitochondria. Lots of fans took that piece of lore completely the wrong way as if it would "make the Force something biological" ... whereas it doesn't do that. The "midichlorians" are not "The Force" but they are the force-sensitive building blocks of all life. This biological "fact" in the Star Wars universe is what makes all life-forms potentially force-sensitive ... it is not about inherited ability but about training to listen to "hear the midichlorians speak". Lucas introduced midichlorians to symbolize the deep and fundamental connection between "The Force" and "Life".

actually george has implied that his idea was partially that the Midicholrians are the force itself. he has talked about how mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell. and in canon lore it states that some theorize that the midcholorians are literally the force itself
@vetarlittorf1807
@vetarlittorf1807 4 года назад
@@houseofaction No. He has never implied that. That's just what the fans misinterpreted. The midi-chlorians were always just the gateway between life and the Force, explaining why not just anyone can communicate with the Force. The Force itself, however, was always an omnipresent energy field that connects all there is.
@ShawnPJohnson
@ShawnPJohnson 4 года назад
I have always thought of midiclorians as independant single-celled organisms (like mitochondria) that are sustained by the force and thus those with a stronger connection to the force have more midiclorians because they present a more ideal environment for the midiclorians to survive and flourish in

I'm also really glad that you praised Jake Lloyd. He really did do a great job. What was rough, though, was that fans had their own ideas of what Anakin should be like and what the movie should be and do and when it didn't go the way they wanted to they took it out on the characters/actors. Specifically, Jae Jar and Jake Lloyd. Both of those men have had to struggle with depression and such because of the personal attacks they received because people took it too seriously, too personally, and didn't allow the story tellers to tell their story. So, again, thank you for liking Jake Lloyd and enjoying the story that was told. Your lack of preconceived ideas and "fan buildup" has allowed you to just enjoy what's there.

A good description. I was 16 when it came out and still rather new to the fandom so I was basically the perfect age and I still love the prequels. Interesting to see your take on 'balance'. And yes, midichlorians are based on mitochondria. I used to study microbiology and mitochondria originated in our early ancestors as symbiotic bacteria. Some people don't like the concept of midichlorians but I always thought it was pretty neat. Unfortunately there was so much backlash against Jake Lloyd he stopped acting and went through a really rough time...I'm sure he'd be happy to know there are still people who enjoy this movie!

Qui-Gon was the father that Anakin never had growing up, who valued him when others didn't. Qui-Gon truly believed in serving life, which serves the Force. Obi-Wan, a rule-follower, obliged to be Anakin's teacher and eventually would become friend and brother; but Anakin really desires a father figure.

@@frenchynoob he's a smart guy. But even so, there's something different about love from a father than a mother. Psychologically, a mothers love is a general guarantee, like a safety net. But a fathers love is in another realm than the nurturing. It's the force a boy needs to know he's a man, one to challenge him and see that the boy can achieve. Obi-Wan always kept Anakin to the rules of the Order and constrained him (though rightly so in the name of patience and humility), yet Obi-Wan never lavished his love on him like Qui-Gon did. Anakin was all too eager to accept Palpatine as father, because Palpatine delighted in Anakin. Obi-Wan was stuck with him out of duty to Qui-Gon, but wasn't the kind of Jedi Anakin wanted. When boys don't have a father, they can never become men. They remain boys with a great wound that can't be healed without a father's love.
