Reacting to 'THE HILLS' | S3E1 | Whitney Port 

Spencer was aggressively trying to ruin LC’s reputation at this point because he wanted Heidi to be the new main character, not Lauren.

When we find out Spencer did in fact spread that rumor and then lied, doubled down on the fact that he didn’t say it proves Lauren was always right to hate him and not support her relationship with him. She had her moments, but she was not wrong about him. I stand on that.

Perez Hilton has said that the one thing he regrets posting back in the day was the rumor about Lauren and also confirmed it was spencer who came to him about it which is why he believed him with no actual tape

Everyone is talking about the tape but the real winner here is the “you know what you did” scene. Changed television forever and Lauren became iconic after this scene.

There was an article on The Washington Post where they said how upset and disappointed Lauren was with the producers because they manipulated the fight scene. They didn’t care at all how hurt she was about the rumors and that she couldn’t be in the same room with Spencer and Heidi and they made them show up at the club anyways. Lauren said in an audio footage to a producer : “MTV should care what Spencer did to me. It's not okay that they let him up here” while she was crying. This whole thing is really sad and it makes you understand why LC did not wanted to be part of this and struggles so much when she remembers her reality TV past. And BTW: a rumor of a sex tape it’s a HUGE deal and can ruin someone’s life.

Others have typed it. below, I'm sure but Perez has confirmed the fact that Spencer told him the sex tape rumor--as well as the disgusting comments about her body. I'm pretty sure Spencer also admitted to it, huge part of why I will never be on "Team Speidi." So gross.

Brody confirms it later on and will eventually take Lauren's side and end his friendship with Spencer.. such s turning point in the series.

If I remember correctly LC was mortified by the sex tape allegations. It was a time when people like Paris Hilton had a sex tape out and it became a dark mark on her reputation for a while. LC was probably worried about what it meant for her job and her show if people believed the rumour.

Lauren got to have the last laugh in the end with her empire. Unlike heidi and spencer who needed a hills reboot (which no-one watches)to make money.

It was confirmed. And they were super proud of it. That scene where they seem unaware is completely put on...it’s acting. And bad acting at that.

Heidi had such dead eyes when she was talking to Jenn.. That’s also when she started completely transforming her body/face. She looks so different from last week’s (last season’s) finale 😳

Idk why they’re always hating or criticizing Lauren during the rerun commentary. They have never have anything nice to say about her.

I was in my early 30s when the Hills was on & I remember feeling so sad for Lauren. Now at 45 yrs old & rewatching this episode I feel just as bad if not worse for Lauren. It is a pretty BIG deal. Seems like Whitney would understand Lauren’s feelings more since she was witnessing what the rumor was doing to her. They were friends at this time & it’s weird that Whitney doesn’t seem to remember how devastated Lauren was.

Definitely agree with the crew who are pointing out that Spencer (and yes, it was confirmed that it was him who started it all) put this rumor out there to try and ruin Lauren's squeaky clean reputation/cause drama for the show. So, from her perspective -- again, someone who is like 21/22 years old here and is known to have a clean image and a fun hit MTV show, this would have been a huge deal. Also, I have to note, watching this again, Lauren just seems so much lighter this season (aside from the big blowout with Heidi in da club). She seems happier, more fun and more herself. So, I do think having Heidi out of her life and having that confirmation that she did not have Lauren's best interest at heart, did her good in the end.

Really happy to see people defending Lauren and the sex tape incident here. I definitely don't think she's always 100% perfect, but she seems to be held to a much higher standard that Spencer and Heidi in some of the videos. By all means comment if there is something off that Lauren does but Spencer and Heidi seem to get a free pass a lot of the time, when based on some of the malicious stuff Spencer does is pretty off..

Lauren had every right to be that upset, it wasn’t just someone saying “there’s one out there”. It was the disrespectful things said about her body and them not admitting to it and playing innocent. They even went on the Tyra show and spoke about it.

I remember the sex tape rumour it went along with the rumour of Lauren's private parts it was absolutely vile. Heidi and Spencer (Speidi) went on gossip and radio shows, gossip blogs etc at that time they were prime source for entertainment news. The rumour blew up so much and Speidi knew wherever Lauren went and whatever press she did she would be asked about it. They knew it would overshadow her endeavours and so they kept stretching it. So while some may not think it isn't a big deal it is when you're someone like Lauren- practically small town girl making a way for herself in the fashion industry. Imagine those rumours getting back to people and yes, Kim Kardashian's tape was already out there and the connotations sex tapes have for females can be damaging. Remember who Brody's father is so the rumour was not far fetched to many who were fans of Speidi and hated Lauren. It's easy to look back all those years and think meh, it's not a big deal but that is because Lauren continued to live her truth, she worked hard, and fought through all the nasty things people put out there about her. Many people on the show were looking for a come up, I am so proud Lauren stayed true to herself because any young woman trying to build a brand and having rumours like that out there would be devastating. I actually think with Lauren taking ownership of her life and making those who tried to damage small she came out looking better. I don't know how she did it.

I think Heidi and Lauren’s relationship was literally like sisters. Heidi is in part of Laguna Beach too, she spent a lot of time with Lauren’s family. I can totally understand Lauren saying it feels like a friend has died. At this point she is single, not a mum - friends are one of the most important things in your life when you’re early 20’s! And I truly think she loved Heidi (the pre spencer Heidi)

Spencer confirmed that he started the rumour in the wedding special episode. It was when he was talking about why he invited perez hilton.

Just a quick note... Rumours of a sex tape are not bad BUT the fact that we know that it was done SO MALICIOUSLY to really hurt someone and their reputation, kind of changes it. Edit: actually - even just rumours of a sex tape is bad. So invasive. Ew.

I find it really odd you would say a sex tape rumour is not a big deal? Having a sex tape is fine if YOU CHOOSE to do it and you choose for it to be public knowledge. I am starting to notice a pattern of questioning everything about lauren while giving spencer or heidi a pass on shitty behaviour.

By starting that rumour..Read through their book btw they did it... they knew lauren would always be know as that girl. She would have to talk about it in press and on every interview. Its to tarnish her reputation which she planned to build her career on. If my friend started that rumour about me I wouldn't have them in my life. Imagine being that vindictive you make things up about your friend.

I can appreciate you guy's difference of opinion, but COME ON, imagine someone creating a rumor about that on your child or loved one. As a young woman i was disgusted by Heidi and Spencer's antics. Anywayyyy LC came out on top with a brilliant biz and brand and beautiful family. Good for her.

let's please address that the actual rumor wasn't just the sex tape, it was the beef curtains. The beef curtains was what really upset Lauren.

I remember seeing an interview of when Lauren was on Laguna Beach and her letting her parents know beforehand if they were about to watch anything slightly inappropriate. So yeah her getting a phone call from her mom about what she was hearing would’ve been devastating for her as well as her family.

Spencer is also a common denominator in Laurens problem with friends. First Heidi then Jen Bunney

The fight actually happened before she read the letter in the bathroom. Lauren's hair was still up when they were arguing, but it had fallen when she came out of the bathroom!

Lauren was one of It girls at the time, I can’t get over her looks (even though they’re clearly outdated at this point) I love her so much 🤩

Perez Hilton has admit that Spencer came to him specifically with the rumor and that led to Perez’s messy toxic ass to always refer to Lauren as “Meat Curtains” on his website. And remember, during that period- Perez’s site was YUGE. (Can you imagine a website like that being popular today? At least one that was so blatantly horrible to people?)

*So I deep dived on this episode & apparently Lauren had no idea Hiedi was coming to the club until she showed up SO IT WASNT PLANNED HOWEVER the producers wrote a script of how they wanted the scene to go & Lauren found it years later & was CREEPED OUT by it!* 😂😂😂 *They also had a deleted scene after Heidi & Lauren yell at a each other where it got so HEATED they had to pull Lauren aside & unreleased audio of her screaming at MTV was leaked where she was cursing tf out of producers for letting Hiedi & Spencer on the show. She was screaming & crying & actually left the club. So that scene where she comes back into the club was filmed earlier when Spencer & Hiedi first arrived* 😂😂😂😂

The more insecure Heidi gets, the more she pets the Barbie mane. It gets worse and worse the more she changes her appearance too. I understood Lauren being very upset about that rumor. Whether there's a tape or not when you work hard to have a good reputation and your sucky ex-friend starts a nasty rumor like that it hurts on many different levels. Heidi doesn't contact Lauren once after she moves, yet she plays the victim that she won't come to her lame party? This new opening always killed me because we never actually got to see that footage of Lauren busting a move at the club! I always loved Whitney, but her honesty about that guy solidified her for me lol Brody 100% confirms they did it btw, he throws them right under the karma bus lol

I mean, these rumours could mean nothing to some and A LOT to others. It could do so much damage, not just reputation wise but also mentally, especially considering the kind of family Lauren came from and the fact that she was quite aware of her own brand, even by then. So no, I don't think it's something to take very lightly, also considering Spencer was obviously out to get her and did it in such a malicious way, dragging Heidi down with him. Like Lauren said, Heidi had a choice there and she very well knew what Spencer was doing. Speaking of, they did admit to it.

Some other people have mentioned why the sex tape rumor is a big deal and I agree. I also think we should factor in that Lauren was trying to become a designer. I think when you're are building a brand your image matters and a sex tape didn't fit hers. All you have to do is imply that a girl is a "slut" and it can ruin her reputation.I feel like Heidi isn't innocent in any of this. She has made countless remarks about Lauren and also about the sex tape. I feel like if Heidi cared about Lauren at all she would never bring up the sex tape. Heidi still talks bad about Lauren till this day. I think Heidi plays the victim a lot and cant be trusted.

And the fact that on Kristen Cavallari’s show had to mention LAUREN when Heidi & Audrina appear just show that Lauren is what gave them the ratings. I cannot believe even Kristen had to accept that on her show bc she has work for her name too & doesn’t need Lauren’s shadow. But Heidi & Audrina actually they do yes hahaha

It still is a big deal because all of your FAMILY and friends are coming to you wondering about that. It is embarassing and a very disrespectful thing to do as a supposed "best friend"

Love that you guys review The Hills. I’m a little disappointed at your reactions of this episode. This was the most iconic episode of the whole series. I realize you have friendships to maintain in the current day but if you’re reviewing The Hills and this episode in particular, give it the justice it deserves. What Spencer and Heidi did to Lauren was dirty. Maybe because it didn’t happen to you, you don’t feel as strongly but I remember feeling so bad for Lauren. That rumor was so low.

The scene with Lauren and Audrina reading the letter was actually filmed after their fight at a different location. Lauren was so mas after the fight that you can see her shaking lol

I am LOVING this series BUT honest feedback - I think sometimes whitney you come across a bit harsh to Lauren. She was 20 years old and to have rumours like that going GLOBAL when you are JUST getting used to this sort of attention would have caused a TON of anxiety and likely PTSD. I really don't like how you tried to downplay that.

love you both, but i feel like sometimes the way you talk about lauren and her situations on the show doesn't sit right. i don't think you really get to invalidate or downplay her reaction to the tape rumour. it's about her body and her private life and i think the way she decides to react is one hundred percent up to her and one hundred percent valid. edit: im a 23 year old girl myself. if someone did this to be i would be heartbroken, especially someone i knew personally. she's still learning so much about herself at this age

About the rumor of the tapes, it was taboo back then but also you have to understand how young Lauren was. This would be a big deal for a young woman to deal with especially involving her hometown. I’d be mortified and would never speak to the person who spread those rumors whether or not it’s true or not.

The last fight that Lauren had with Heidi she did said how can Spencer hate her so much and made her wish she would die by spreading those rumor. Lauren was so hurt by this and that’s why she said to Heidi she want to forgive her and she wanted to forget her.

Lauren's voice was always so raspy back then! If you listen to her in interviews now, her voice is completely different.

I believe the reason why the sex tape rumor was a big deal was because Lauren was working toward a career in fashion. As we see now in this social media era that companies will drop you following allegations against your personal character whether proven or not. Lauren mentions that they were trying to ruin her life. This could have had a very different turn in her opportunities. Fortunately, it did not affect her that way but a person’s character makes allegations easier to believe. I think for me personally, it’s easier to believe that Spencer and Heidi started the rumor than it was for Lauren and Jason to have created a sex tape.

You’re missing the key point which is that The sex tape rumors weren’t even the real problem. It was the comments Spencer made publicly on his blog about Lauren’s body parts. That was so low and not okay. I would honestly never talk to someone again either if their husband said those things about me. Lauren did not want that comment mentioned on the show so they are deflecting with the sex tape rumors

If my random friend told people I had a sex tape that would suck and I wouldn't be their friend, but I'd laugh at the ridiculousness. If the entire world thought I'd made a sex tape and it was talked about in the news and people accosted my family about it and someone wrote a scummy article on their scummy site and it was all I was ever asked about...that is an even worse thing to do to a person. You're basically blowing up their life.

I really don’t think it’s fair to down play the rumour of a sex tape no matter what the context is or whether it was out there or not.. she was a young woman in her early 20’s not to mention she was in the public eye at the time. You guys seems to down play Spencer and heidis actions and are quite hard on Lauren. It’s a bit of a shame as I really enjoy these videos but it’s hard to ignore that part of it.

Anyone else notice the shot of Heidi and Spencer driving in the car ride home is from season 2? Heidi hair is styled differently (not blown out) and is shorter plus also a darker shade and her eyebrows are darker too. Not to mention we see that jacket in season 2 a lot more!

Fun fact: Kim Kardashian was cut in a scene from Spencer and Heidi’s housewarming party. She was Brody’s step sister at the time 😝

I am really shocked by how hard Timmy and Whitney always seem on Lauren. I agree that Lauren comes across really cold and hard on Heidi often times but her behaviour is very understandable at the age she was at. They pushed back on all the Spencer haters saying they'd be 'objective' yet when this sex tape rumour came out, they brushed it off as a minor incident, based on their current day knowledge that LC now has super successful businesses and family life. She didn't know at that time that she would be OK. I find it ironic that in a New Beginning reaction episode, Whitney was very butt hurt that Spencer had tweeted something negative about her. Timmy reminded her that he was creating drama to drum up publicity for New Beginnings but she still kept bringing it up the whole episode. Is it not understandable how upset LC was considering the rumours came out a week before filming this episode? I am concerned that Timmy & Whitney are prioritising their fear of getting backlash from Spencer over flagging the clear signs of abuse that Spencer is exhibiting. Spencer's actions to a former close friend of Heidi's is very emotionally manipulative and for all the young viewers of this channel should not be downplayed. I do feel disappointed and worried that they're going to keep brushing all problematic behaviour under the carpet. Toxic relationships is a huge issue for a lot of young women and especially in this #MeToo movement is something that individuals with a platform should shed light on. Come on guys, get inspired by the likes of FKA Twigs and Rose McGowan!!!! PS I do love you guys and this show and always look forward to watching. I think you really just need to look at what happened to Paris Hilton when her tape came out, it was such a different time and even though there was no tape I’m sure people would of been calling her a slut etc. and at the time Lauren was releasing her own clothing line and to have something tarnish your reputation could be a risk to your business since you are the face of it and people buy your products because it’s you behind it. I feel like that would of played into why she felt so betrayed

The scene where Lauren reads Heidi's letter is a totally different scene from the club. If you look closely, Lauren is wearing two different dresses. Compare when she comes out of the bathroom from when she sees Heidi afterward. My guess is that she read the letter at a different party on a different night.

The footage of Heidi and Spencer driving in the car after the club is so clearly old footage- Heidi hasn't had any of the facial work done, her eyebrows aren't bleached yet, and that black and white coat is super old.

Heidi & Spencer eventually cop to starting the rumor. If I remember correctly tho Spencer was speaking graphically and meanly about Lauren’s lady bits. It was all over Perez Hilton and REALLY rude.

If Spencer did go behind Heidi's back & spread the rumours, I find It strange that Heidi would stay with Spencer. Which makes me think they both had something to do with the rumours...

It feels like you guys really don’t like Lauren and it shows. Which is fine, she’s not perfect, but it’s uncomfortable to see how often you discredit her and her feelings every episode. But maybe you’re just closer to Heidi, and I guess that makes sense, but in this instance Lauren has every right to be upset and Heidi is totally in the wrong.
