70s music was so great because the artists had REAL talent!! No autotune, no building music around an image! 100% talent. If you couldn't sing, you didn't become an artist!!

When all but 1 song is recognisable and you were born at the end of the decade… just shows how amazing and enduring the music was.

Before you say the Beatles are overrated try stuff like Helter Skelter, A Day In the Life, and Tomorrow never Knows. The Beatles were the creators of many of the modern day genres. In fact, listen to the whole of the white album and see just how many genres they perform with total ease and then tell me they are overrated.

Oh wow what a great trip down memory lane. I was actually alive in the 70s so remember most of these from the first time around. Queen and Abba were so awesome.

The Wings videos play, “looks like McCartney 🤔” - yes sir!

Ah, Boney M. A music group casted by the German Grank Farian who also sung the male voice himself. This band only 'sung' full playback, similar as Millie Vanillie, another popular 'full playback' band by Frank Farian. Frank Farian actually died a few days ago. His first studio was near the place I work at.

I'd LOVE to see reactions to the 60'ies, 80'ies and 90'ies as well.

Pretty great line-up, you can see Abba and Bee Gees really picking up steam. I don't think Rolling Stones are better than The Beatles, The Beatles wrote the Stones first hit. They were friends, the closest thing to a rivalry was probably The Stones being originally billed as the 'bad boy' alternative to them. All 4 Beatles had solo hits, where you saw their individual strengths and weaknesses, but they were greater together. The best way to understand their greatness is probably listening to the musical progression of their albums, particularly from 1965-69, from Rubber Soul to Abbey Road they were unstoppable.

Kate Bush was waaaaay ahead of her time.

Beatles overestimated! Every record they made there was something that had never been done before. They broke the mould for ever. You grew up in a musical world in which their influence is inescapable.

Did you know Killing me Softly is about Don Mclean, Lori Lieberman saw him in concert and was so moved by the song he sang she wrote about it and got some composers to put it to music.

My era, Great songs. Cher was singing in the 60s, Sonny & Cher. The Hollies- One of my favourite groups. Annies song is one of the best.

Melanie (featured in this list with her hit "brand new key" and who got known after she performed at woodstock at 22 yo, has passed away a few days ago on the 23th at age 76 In 2022 she came to the netherlands to perform live. She was still performing at age 76 what a legend. R.I.P Melanie

Most of the songs on here are so iconic. Sadly, there are only a few songs today I’d be able to remember as everyone sounds the same.

I feel so lucky to have been a teenager during the 1970's. We had such fun at the local discos. I still have lots of those songs on vinyl singles. Good choice Connor. Loved watching you react to these songs.

There are a few artists missed here eg The Eagles, T Rex, Boz Scaggs, Mud, Joe Jackson, Steely Dan, Squeeze, Pink Floyd, The Who. It was funny seeing Rupert Holmes looking like an accountant doing Karaoke at the firm’s annual Christmas Party though.

I was born in 1948….so the music of the 60s, 70s and some of the 80s stuff was exceptional! Then my musical taste broadened out to include more musical genres. Including classical. One of my current favourites is your own Home Free! Saw them in Birmingham,U.K. in September…superb!

some brief facts for you: The BeeGees were brothers. Andy Gibb was not part of the group but was the youngest of the brothers; Roberta Flack's hit KILLING ME SOFTLY was revived by Lauren Hill and the Fuggees; The British group THE BROTHERHOOD OF MAN & ABBA & BOCCARA & CLIFF RICHARD all were in Eurovision. both BTM and ABBA won with their songs presented here. This was my era. i had a blast enjoying it with you.

Good reaction. The '70s was a very varied decade. You should also do the '60s and '80s compilations of these at least (I know you seemed a bit negative about the '80s, but give it a try - you might be pleasantly surprised at how many iconic songs there are and how good they still sound today). You're right about how fascinating it is to see transitions too - not just of hairstyles, but of fashions and general trends in musical presentation, dancing, etc.

*70s and 80s were definitely not carefree times* Vietnam War, Watergate, Three Mile Island Accident, Tenerife Airport Disaster, US Embassy in Iran taken hostage, Falklands War, Chernobyl Disaster to name just a handful... As a young teen in the 1980s, I wondered why we never heard much from Donna Summer. She had a few hits that were all top notch. Only a few years ago I found out she made a lot more music but it's just that most of the lyrics were 'very adult.'

I would put the Beatles just ahead of the Stones because of the sheer volume of great songs & the way the Beatles experimented & changed music forever. With the help of the Great Sir George Martin (whose background was in classical music). But I absolutely love the Stones. But John Lennon was so talented. A true great. I personally don't have a favourite band. Far too many fantastic bands. It all depends on what mood you're in, while listening to music.

Brits laughing at Cliff Richard turning up at the end. A controversial figure in some respects, he's had No.1 singles here in every decade from the 1950s to the 2000's. I'm not sure if that indicates success or a cult....

As far as I'm aware, only two Beatles scored successfully as solo artists. Also, one got shot in the US so we don't know how HIS life might have turned out. I think this also impacted on how they viewed continuation as a group in later years.

"Waterloo" is what put ABBA on the map in 1974. They were Sweden's entry in that year's Eurovision song contest, which they ended up winning.

I started out thinking this was in America, and then it got weird with songs that weren't hits there... reading the blurb under the original video, it seems it's an attempt to do an international list using chart placings from lots of different countries. Kinda props to them for giving it a go, I guess.

George Harrison was the first Beatle to have a No.1 single in the UK after their split. Not that he saw much from it, as he was taken to court for plagiarism ('My Sweet Lord' was ruled essentially the same melody as 'He's so fine' by 1960s girl group The Chiffons).

The problem with not knowing the artists behind the music is of course that it makes it more difficult to find more music of a similar kind that you like. Otherwise, I agree with most people here, the seventies (and sixties) were about musicians and music, not about image, production, technical aids and marketing. Most of the artists on this list wrote their own music and were talented (or great) instrumentalists and singers. Today, chart music is mostly about big labels with massive marketing resources and streamlined factory-produced muzak where a lack of talent is easily hidden behind technical aids such as auto-tune etc.

This was the best of the '70s .. the way Barbie was the best action movie.

Correct - the 70's was the disco era. Great to see you boogie along! And yes, that was Paul McCartney on a couple of clips. He had a successful run with his band 'Wings' after the Beatles' split. I agree that the 70's & 80's felt more care free - but perhaps it was because I was younger then.

I was 11 when Grease came out and new every with of the songs word for word.

The 1970s was an amazing decade to live through, Connor. Though just a small child at the start, and a decidedly troubled school-leaver at the end, who never had the confidence to be part of the in-crowd at school and therefore enjoy all the big hits at the time; I certainly remember and feel that I know all of these songs - and many more that never made it to the number one spot! I well remember Eve Graham and the New Seekers, teaching the world to sing and then telling us that Coke was the real thing, Roy Wood wishing it could be Christmas everyday; the newly-appointed Queen Sonja of Sweden hiotting the headlines as the real Dancing Queen, at her wedding ball; and the compromise that allowed girls to wear dark trousers instead of skirts at school, providing they wore their school ties (all of which followed-on from Bay City Roller-mania, that made tartan fashionable again); and doing the3 Slosh at the school disco!! It was a decade of industrial unrest, power cuts, poverty, strikes, shortages, and massive unemployment - and yet, the very best music emerges in those times and it is memorable in ways that no other compares with. It was when this racist and sexist nation began looking at itself differently - though that would be a much longer process that anyone imagined, and if you look at those musicians now, you'll see the beginnings of today's gender politics emerging for the first time too. It should have been the springboard to modern Britain and would have been - had it not been for what followed. But that's another decade, and another story!

I was impressed (as a stereotypical Eurovision fan) by how many songs on the list were from Eurovision contestants: ABBA of course, but also Brotherhood of Man, Olivia Newton John, and Cliff Richard. Also, more British acts than I expected on a global list (Beatles, Rolling Stones, Bee Gees, Elton John, Brotherhood of Man, Bay City Rollers, Kate Bush, Cliff Richard, Olivia Newton John, Eric Clapton, Rod Stewart, Andy Gibb, possibly others I missed)

Cher has had #1 songs in the past 7 decades. You are only hearing small clips of these songs so have to hear them in full Andy Gibb was the youngest brother of the guys in the Bee Gees, he unfortunately died of a drug overdose. David Soul was an actor who was most famous from thr show Starsky&Hutch.

another note, the channel that produced this video pulled a variety, not necessarily top, songs. Bony M & Bocarra were on the charts most likely in Europe, but weren't here. The rest of the songs are within the right timeline but there were other top hits ignored for Bony M, Bocarra, Wings (the odd ballady song with him on the guitar in a farm scene that isn't on any chart i could find for this year). Another side note, David Soul (DON'T GIVE UP ON US BABY) just passed. he was part of the tv show Starsky & Hutch, nothing to do with that travesty of a movie that was made!
