Takoko is Yoruba and loosely translates to anything that is not smooth / difficult to handle/detangle , in the context of natural hair. A lot of hairstylists tend to say that when they find your hairstyle difficult to work with, hard to comb through, knotty and yes it is often said insultingly or with lots of shade because they expect everyone to hate kinks and embrace a relaxer or any straighter option your hair can be manipulated to.

@@nicoleryan6630ittle to no manipulation will grow your hair. I had cornrows in my hair for like 2 years, washed twice a month and wore wigs. When I finally took my hair down and straighten it, people couldn’t believe it was my natural hair because it was down to the middle of my back. Had people’s hands all up in my hair trying to see if I had tracks. And my hair texture is 4c, the hardest texture to retain length. 🤣😂

Personally, my hair has been growing so fast since my big chop and the biggest change to my routine has been washing my hair weekly (even when it's in PROTECTIVE STYLES). It has completely changed my hair! My detangling is a breeze, my scalp no longer itches and flakes. My hair is just overall softer and easier to manage than when I was going 3+ weeks without washing it. I work out more because I'm not afraid of sweating, not to mention, I don't have to load it up with products to hide the smell of a dirty, oily scalp.

@KelcyPassportbyDesign
@KelcyPassportbyDesign Год назад
I think it's genetics and not manipulating the hair. Towards the end of her life, my grandmother kept her hair in braids (extension-free). It was easier to manage. Her hair grew to her waist. I've been doing braid-outs where my hair stays mostly in braids and my hair has grown significantly. And I've stopped using heat. Once or twice a year only.
@Gladiator_in_a_Suit
@Gladiator_in_a_Suit Год назад
Genetics don’t determine how long the hair grows only the texture and curl pattern.
@KelcyPassportbyDesign
@KelcyPassportbyDesign Год назад
@@Gladiator_in_a_Suit I believe genetics do play a part because looser hair textures appear to grow faster due to the ease it takes for the strands to pass through the scalp. So if the texture is passed down, it makes sense for the growth to be passed down too.
@Anne_one
@Anne_one Год назад
No. The biggest factor is length retention. The average person can grow hair from anywhere from 1-3 feet long. The reason many black women don’t reach their full terminal length is due to poor hair care practices that do not help with length retention. Low manipulation styles is a method to retain length.
@KelcyPassportbyDesign
@KelcyPassportbyDesign Год назад
@@Anne_one I do agree that length retention is a major reason. However, I still believe some people's hair grows faster than others, even if they're doing all the right things. In part due to their genetics.
@noistune5707
@noistune5707 Год назад
@@KelcyPassportbyDesign ease it takes to pass thru the scalp makes no sense. Looser hair grows faster bcz it gets tangled less. Which is why low manipulation grows blk hair and staright hair retains length the most.

No, ma'am. They are using the right hashtag. Because they know that a lot of us with real type 4 hair truly desire type 3 or straight hair altogether. A lot of type 4 women will watch their biracial "hair crush" before watching women who look like them. Honestly, it's sad that we fall for such disingenuous marketing tactics. Love this video! Coming from a hairstylist who has a lot of experience with natural hair… it’s not that your hair is dirty, but that it’s low maintenance. You’re totally right on how different methods work for different peoples hair type/texture. I recently just lost 1/3 of my hair due to heat damage my past stylist used to apply on my hair every two weeks, but I stopped going to her and found a really sweet older woman to start doing my hair, and I learned lots of things and methods about my hair. One major thing is that my hair type (4c) is more on the easier side to slick back and have more of a cloud like texture. So I learned that the products(blue magic grease)I’ve used since childhood have clogged my pores throughout the years and produced walls of build up onto my scalp because it’s to heavy for my softer hair type. I was in complete shock when I learned these things because lots of black people have grew up on grease so learning that I couldn’t use it on my hair anymore was just mind blowing.

I have trouble with my hair period. I have psoriasis so it's just always complicated with my scalp issues plus the dry scalp. I wanna go for long period of time without washing my hair so I can do other styles, but I have to wash it 1-2 times a week just to keep the flakes and dry scalp at bay. I've even tested it and if I go to long or if certain products hit my scalp, I gotta wash or I'll start scratching away. More oils makes it worse because it's over production, but I can not go without putting anything on my hair after the 3rd day since I do have type 4a/b hair. Sometimes I don't put anything on it just to let it breathe from all the product use to I do use gels and leaves in all the time. I just wanna be able to rock sew ins again without it snowing. Scalp exfoliants are hit or miss since sometimes they just dry me out even more. I haven't found a product I love enough to continue for years like most people do. I have no holy grails. I basically just try to keep the flare ups at bay.

Hey girl I have seborrheic dermatitis so I feel you, I would say the first step is get prescription shampoo from the dermatologists (you may already be doing that and just didn't say it here). Second I would ask them if putting oils on your scalp or product, in general, is a good idea. I only put oils and products on my ends or the middle of my hair but NEVER the scalp unless it is prescription. That way your hair can be moisturized and not irritate your scalp. Then finally you can ask the dermatologist for a leave-in product (they gave me one) to put on your scalp while your hair is braided under a wig then maybe you could start wearing them, I just don't know about sew-in because you can't reach your scalp as well. Hope this helps!

I have this exact problem. I don't get braids or silk presses anymore because it'll only last a week or two. I can't go that long without washing my hair or else it'll itch like crazy

I’ve used exfoliater on my hair and have 4a/b hair, it definitely helps shed away the dead hair and makes my scalp feel fresh (has peppermint). I like using it because I leave my hair untouched in braids for 5 weeks max, I work out and sweat, and only wash my hair 1x a month(I don’t wear my natural hair), so I use it to really cleanse and follow up with a regular shampoo. I like it.

Takoko means in knots. If they say your hair is takoko, it means your hair is in knots.

"Ta koko" is a Yoruba word from the Yoruba tribe in Nigeria that literally means "very tangled" or "knotted". Yes, it can sometimes be used with a negative connotation, but the word itself just means very tangled.
