You are a little intimidating! I sort of think of you as a Tyra Banks type character in an imaginary game of America's Next Top Writer I play in my head. I mutter to myself as I work on my WIP thinking, please, Alexa, please don't shave my head.
I never considered you intimidating... but then again since I have gotten older it takes a lot to intimidate me anymore. I'd be fine walking up and saying hi. :)
I don't really get some of the assumptions. I know some were joking but drinking the tears of enemies? It's a joke, but the idea that honesty shows that you're mean spirited doesn't make sense to me. There's no way to sugarcoat the truths of writing and publishing, and if anything, you're guiding us more than most people out there ever would. Even though we're strangers to you, and you actually don't owe us anything. Your transparency is such a strength on this channel and although i guess the assumption jokes are in good spirit, please know that we do appreciate you, Alexa.
I don’t think you come off as intimidating. I like you and your channel because your “strictness and bluntness” translate to honesty. You can trust someone with those traits to tell you the truth about their experience, and to be clear and not mince words. Then you said you were an infj and it all made sense (some of my favorite people irl are infjs:)
I'm also surprised over how many writers say they are INFJ -- as an INTJ myself, I kind of feel left out (especially since women with my personality type is supposedly 0.8%) 😂
I had some assumptions but you know, there are a lot of people I follow who, while we're polar opposites they have some amazing writing advice. But surprisingly Alexa and I have a LOT of similarities when it comes to the things we like about writing, fan fictions and other story stuff. Also good on you being PC, Apple products are garbage. My ex was an Apple fan, it was so weird using a Mac.
I just want to say that I'm envious that you went to a cheese town for a writing retreat. I love love cheese so darn much and would really love to go to a cheese town 🙂
I took the personality test years ago and was an INFJ. It seemed like the coolest type, so I've never re-tested because I don't want to discover I'm actually something else.
This was such an interesting video! I love your educational videos, but I have started to wonder about you as a person. I was surprised that you consider yourself an introvert, I would totally think you're an extrovert!
What many don't think about is that introverts/extraverts are defined by where they get their energy - introverts gets energy from being alone while talking/hanging out with others is an energy suck, while extraverts are the opposite. Funny thing is, there are extraverted introverts (like hanging out with people even though it drains energy) but also people who are in the middle area of the scale - I believe those are called androverts :) it's possible she's more towards the middle, or since she isn't directly spending time with people, the camera isn't taxing for her. But considering her job and such, I would believe it's more of an androvert persona (androverts don't have their own letter in the Mejer-Briggs test, where they measure percentage of introversy and extraversy -- my score was about 95% introvert, while a person with 51% would still show as an introvert even though their experiences and drain differs😊) Wow, this turned into a rant! Sorry, this subject interests me a lot 😂
Hello Alexa. When you finish a chapter or manuscript or edit do you say to yourself "Alexa, done!" and hi5 yourself or someone else? I really wanted to ask you this for a long time and I apologize if it is a rude question, it was not my intention to be rude.
Hi Alexa! Huge fan! Your videos have really helped me become confident as a writer. I hope one day youll read my novel :) Thanks for all the awesome advice!
YES YOURE A VICTIM OF THE COMBO-GIFT THING TOO! It's the worst part about having a birthday in December. Everyone is usually so busy with Christmas/New Years you can't even really have a birthday because everyone is so busy. I've gotten the combo-gift treatment for most of my life, thank god i'm not the only one lol
It's not really related to this, but even now that I'm pretty good in understanding english speakers, almost everytime one of your video starts my brain assumes that you say "hello everyone, I'm so done here" , and I'm like "oh no why", and immediately after "OH GOD AGAIN".
"I like open source" does not equal "I like PC" WHAT. Go ubuntu gal! But yes, I have a PC for gaming and a Mac for writing because I needed a lightweight laptop that was performant - and that I could code on. And trust me, as a programmer everything is just so much easier when you have a shell terminal right there, which you do on mac or linux.
Super fun getting to know about you more outside of your writing! Honestly, your writing advice was the first pull to your channel, but I stay because you seem to be such a lovely person. Keep doing what you’re doing, Alexa!
Alexa Donne, you're the online writing advisor today's up-and-coming authors need, I thank you and I wish you a lot of good luck. One suggestion is reminding your fans that they can narrate in the first-person singular point-of-view without actually being in their short stories, novellas, or novels. Best example of this: in Edgar A. Poe's _Tell Tale Heart,_ he, being the main character of the story, killed an old man because of the man's raven eye; however, Edgar A. Poe never actually killed anyone in his life.
I hated math too. You're lucky you never went through the "new math" era. You remind me of a friend: she was Bohemian beauty who left me for a younger man. That said, I really like and appreciate your videos. I've learned a lot about writing. Thanks. BTW, don't worry about being intimidating. We unpublished ones would rather get the badass routine from you than from an editor--or worse, an editor's assistant.
I wasn't sure where to post this, but I had a request for a Vlog topic! You mentioned before that hiring a professional editor isn't necessary before querying. And even though we as authors should do our do diligence, we will ultimately not have a perfect manuscript before submitting. What are agents looking for ina manuscript they're reviewing? What are acceptable and unforgivable mistakes?
I’m wondering how tall you are because I assumed you are a fellow short girl, but I’m thinking back to one of your vlogs and I think maybe you’re pretty tall?
Alexa, I am an academic in Cyber security and sci fi writer, published already one academic book, my question for you: once we have a book written as a first draft where do you think we can find beta readers to get some feedback on our writing without loosing our rights and protecting our intellectual property?
I have a three cat limit. Have four cats. Cat four is the family cat I took home sixteen years ago that my mum would not let me take when I moved out nine years ago. My mum has since passed away and dad is getting remarried and we decided it was better for the 16 year old cat to come to my place with the three cats she already knows and more familiar scents then to my dad's fiancé's two cats that she doesn't know and unfamiliar smells. It was fun listening to everys assumptions about you.
Haha I didn't have an account at this point but I remember watching it last Yr and I had the assumption that you are obsessed with board games and you are a lesbian... because you seem like a really strong gal - tough on the outside but kind on the inside 🙃🙃
I grew up with apple because we were poor... hear me out! My dad worked for an IT company that provided him with apple products. When they got really old he'd pass them down to us. I have literally never owned any tech that was not at least a year or two past it's prime😂
We must live close, because I’m super close to universal as well. It’s so convenient especially because we’re close to the red line, which makes it so easy to get around. Go team Los Angeles! It is such a fun place to live. ❤️❤️
I hope this doesn't come across as weird, but may I ask where you usually shop? I noticed you wear a lot of shirts and blouses with flower prints (like the one in this video) and I think I need this in my life, too! They are all so pretty and suit you very well!
team pc yesss and omg the math thing. despite being in my highest math class in highschool and later completing engineering maths I still got condescended to by my male maths teachers...
I've been a subscriber from day one and this made me love you even more!!! I'm also a Christmas baby (10 days before) and often got the "combo gift special" too. I'm also a PC girl and an INFJ... I didn't know you used to live in the UK, that'd make an interesting story time video. Assumptions video part 2 pls...
I'm a David Bowie girl, myself, more early 70's Ziggy Stardust stuff but let's face it any Bowie Song is a GOOD Bowie Song I think especially any song in the Labyrinth I was NOT raised on David Bowie Songs so I can not say I've been a fan all my life; but David Bowie is my Jam
I’d like your opinion, I’m going on a camping retreat with my kids, there in bed asleep. Do I reread A) farewell to arms B) The Dead James Joyce C) the elements of style Question? A men can grant you a wish or make you happy ? Why?
I spent a couple months in the UK and really enjoyed the tea. Now, back home, I get Tetley tea at the local grocery store and drink that instead of coffee. I pretty much only drink coffee when out and about or when writing in my local coffee shop.
I love Royksopp as well! This made me so happy to hear that you also enjoy their music. Most people have never heard of them! My favorite song is "What else is there?" featuring Karin Dreiger. Since you enjoy Rokysopp , are you also a fan of The Knife or Karin's solo project Fever Ray?
About the glass half full or half empty saying - I had always thought it had more to do with where you grew up - that it was tied to region more than personality. Just a different perspective!
I had amazing English teachers ninth and tenth grade, eleventh grade dude was okay, senior year I'm not sure the teacher really cared about her subject, just the job. But Ms. Penland, tenth grade...all my classmates would always go to her for her advice, she was stellar.
