I 100% agree with you regarding the Special Editions, like I understand that people like special editions but it feels like EVERY SINGLE BOOK is becoming a special edition. OR, every book is coming out already with sprayed edges and hard cover (red tower books for instance).

i personally think colleen hoover isn't a good author in terms of writing and what she's said to have done. but my main problem was how back in 2021/2022, people would be threatened for even giving her books 3 stars (i was a victim) and that could play into the strong disliking. i do agree some people are hating on them because they think it's cool...if you like her books, okay. and if you don't that's good😅

i have people who love coho around me and admittedly i did used to like her books when she was releasing them. but over the years after hearing how she responded to someone about her son SA-ing them, the odd coloring book about it ends with us, and the like, i haven’t been able to pick up any of her books again. with sjm i also loved acotar-preordered acowar even-but then i found out how she used one of the victims during BLM to insensitively advertise for her books and the urge to read the tog series also fled me.
I 100% agree on the term “overrated”. Oftentimes it’s used as a way of saying you don’t like the book, but it kind of comes across as just because you don’t like it means that others shouldn’t either or that they’re wrong for liking it. There are popular books I didn’t vibe with, but I wouldn’t say they were overrated or that those that do enjoy that book are wrong.
I agree that audio is a valid way to read. I love audio books. They’re fun. I also agree not everything I read in a book is something I want to do. Sometimes I do but sometimes not. Like I do dom/sub stuff so those books appeal to me. But like you said I also read books about murderers and I’m not out here murdering. Some people are so righteous and judgey. Geeezzz

YOUR OPINION ON DARK ROMANCE IS SO RIGHT👏👏. I am getting so TIRED of seeing people shame others for liking it and think that it automatically means they support it in real life. If that were the case, then those who are hating also have to hate the vampire diaries (the main characters have killed innocent people), and there are so so many more examples. Just because you like something fictional does not mean that you support it in real life and you also have no idea why people are reading these books. We should be putting more focus on people who are actually causing harm to others, rather than people who aren’t hurting anyone by reading a book in the comfort of their own home🤍

I'm dyslexic so audible is awesome for me because it makes it easier to hear the book than to read it sometimes. There is nothing wrong with hearing audio books.

the folks who say that audiobooks do not count as reading seem to forget that blind and vision impaired people exist, and that not all of them know how to read braille. and I'm not an expert but I'd be willing to bet that a lot of books out there that aren't translated ? transcribed ? into braille.
as someone who adores the found family trope, thrillers and sports romance..I might not be a full on dark romance reader but I do love me some drama...I'm all about dark themes being explored in a book(if done right) cannot stand bully romance and sa being overlooked in particular though...and you're so right- just because one likes dark romance doesn't mean they'll support it in real life..one of my friend's favorite trope is dark romance.. but she knows that whatever she consumes from a book/social media is very different from reality and shouldn't be supported irl..however I have seen some girlies on tiktok..hate on others who find dark romance books disturbing..they would glorify the most atrocious things and wish it happened to them(and they were genuine about it.. that's the scary part)...some people are crazy on tiktok I swear..
I think hating on colleen isn't a trend, its the way she sometimes writes problamatic stuff that people doesn't acknowledges, the abuse in november 9, miles being toxic asf and then romanticizing it (how is saying another woman's name w you is okay???) in ugly love, talking about legit "big balls" of their new born son in ugly love, making a sequel to it ends with us when the story wasn't about romance but domestic abuse and lily. Tiktok especially influences young readers and a lot of ya audience to romanticize that shit into real life too. I know that they called you to look at their movie or wtv but its still sad that you think its a trend
As someone who has never read any of her books, from what I personally read observed it definitely feels like a trend to hate her… even prior to the controversy with her son. The simple fact that many women enjoyed her books and made it popular seemed to be the main reason why people were hating so hard. Every other reason came after the hate train had already started. So while some people may have valid reasons to dislike her now many started to dislike her before to "go against the grain".

2:16 Regarding the Special Editions: I completely agree with you Larissa omg! At this point, I wish authors would consider just having an official cover of their series, and if they have new designs to showcase, just make dust jackets or mini posters the same size of the books. As much as I love the look of special editions, it's come to a point where a lot of my favs are coming out with new ones like every year, and they can be so expensive. It's not like I can just drop $50 on a whole new set whenever it's announced. Then there's also the fact that they are limited too. I know it's a business, but it low-key plays at those of us with OCD and anxiety, where we feel like we HAVE to get these beautiful special editions, and we only have xyz amount of time to get them. Not to mention, they are the same exact book(s) as the originals, but with a different cover or a few added pages at the end with a Q&A, etc. Edit: I have only bought the originals for whatever series I want to read, I didn't buy any special editions. I know people like to say "oh no one's forcing you to buy them", but I'm just making the same point Larissa is making^. It's about the principle tbh, making different official pretty covers (some with sprayed edges) of the same series and books over and over each year. The new covers themselves are usually enticing, and make some of us feel like "we have to have it", even if some of us don't actually buy them. Obviously this practice works since it's become pretty popular to do this. (Not to mention physical/online stores using words like "LIMITED EDITION" and "Available for xyz time ONLY", "Get them now while supplies last" as their selling tactics.)

i don't really like when people say listening to audio books doesn't count as reading because it just comes off as pretentious and "oh that's not REAL reading" instead of just letting people enjoy something. I agree with what you said about of course the act of listening and reading is objectively different and that you are still consuming the media, and can formulate ideas together despite listening or reading since you have taken in the knowledge and qualities of the book because you engaged with it, the only difference is someone listened and someone read. Not everyone can read in the traditional way, like of course there are people who physically cannot, like being blind, but also what about people that find difficulty in consentrating, some people are better at audtitorary consumption than visual. what about if you're busy; i know when i'm driving to work i like to listen to the audio because i mean... you know... i can't really have my nose in a book while driving now can i lmao. i also have a friend who has a baby and she listens to the book while she takes care of them, and she can hold them and also listen to a book. i just don't understand some people who have a stick up their arse with audio books like let people enjoy it.... im sorry for this long yap i just needed to type it out haha.

I love a good age gap if it is done well. I think it is the same as the step sibling trope or any forbidden trope. If it is done well it is so good. The off balance series is one of my favourite age gap romances and I know a lot of people would see that as gross and yet I cannot help to love it.
