On the primer issue, I have a question: What are some primers you guys think actually deserve their fame/ actually work? On the other side, are there some primers you guys think are overrated? I love the primed peach primer, by benefit, but absolutely hate make up forever's primers. 🤮.

Honestly I like the e.l.f. color correcting primer. The one I use is green and I have super red skin. While it doesnt drastically correct i mix like 2:1 where one is foundation. I end up using less product, it goes on nicer, and it doesnt settle into my dry ass skin texture.

I’ve pinned this because I would love to see what people say! I personally have been using Milk hydro grip recently and I really like it because it actually helps with my skin texture, I’m oily but dehydrated and the hydro grip doesn’t over hydrate but it also smooths out my dehydrated areas! 🖤 I also think POREfessional is overrated 😑

I have combination skin ( oily t-zone) and for me so far the best was Innisfree No sebum Blur primer. Its not overpriced ( on yesstyle anyways) and it works very good. But i don't use primer everyday. When i just want to cover up some redness or my enormous dark circles 🤣 i just use my face cream as a primer.

Controversial opinion: Everyone screams diversity until it includes unconventionally attractive people, then no one cares. I remember seeing this ad a while ago and one of the models made me think of someone from a renaissance painting, she wasn’t technically attractive by our current standards, but still absolutely stunning. So many people were calling her ugly in various ways, tearing her appearance down just to boost up the other models, and it was sad to see, especially considering it wasn’t the first time I’d seen something like that.

At fifty, it's inevitable and I don't care because I can do great makeup looks even on my mummified skin.😄 But I have noticed that some products just don't work on textured skin. Those felt tip liners like the KVD tattoo liner are horrible to use on textured skin. You need to have the eyelids of a toddler to get those to perform well without some serious hard work. 😖
@janeeyre1990

From a disability pride perspective, there's nothing wrong with facial differences (or facial "disfigurement"). Beauty standards usually reflect societal biases about what type of human is best. Society values abled people over disabled people or those with chronic health conditions. So beauty is used to hide any sign of illness, and when some people don't wear makeup they're constantly asked, "Are you sick?" Mustn't look sick, must look %100 abled and healthy at all times. Getting people to accept the "imperfections" in their skin must be part of a larger effort to get the majority to accept people who are not and will never be healthy.
@ayydubs987
@ayydubs987 3 года назад
social media has really warped our understanding of what skin actually looks like, & it's sad. people are terrified of fine lines, wrinkles, blemishes, pores, etc. etc. etc. people were obviously insecure about these things before, but with all the filters & editing & photoshop that goes on now, it's all been made worse

I remember when Fenty first showed their foundation range, people were so thankful for that inclusivity. Some of my friends who have darker skin tones couldn't find foundation in their shade from Fenty because they'd sold out instead of it not being available at all. That meant so much to them and a new standard had been set. Plus, isn't it a better business practice to have a variety for a larger group of people to buy your product? Anyways, I really enjoyed this video and I love how restful (but honest) you are about your opinions.

I get your standpoint on the one hand, with us extremely pale people not having shades and that not even being slightly as bad as nearly an entire race being left out. Yet I think that it's shit that extremely fair people are being left out of so many brands. More and more deep tones are being added to the shade ranges which is absolutely amazing, yet I think that they should expand their pale shades more.
@adik333
@adik333 4 года назад
@@Christina-lv4mu But I guess it also has to do with the culture of self-tanning? Idk about you but I've noticed that A LOT of extremely fair people end up self-tanning. In fact, they are ashamed of their extremely fair skin tones and feel more confident with a tan on. Perhaps that's why brands don't feel as extreme of need to include extremely fair shades? I hope you can educate me on this if you have a different opinion.

Limited Edition is mostly a business gimmick. They know that if they put the title “limited edition” on something, it makes customers think that if they don’t jump at the chance to buy it right away on full product will disappear and you’ll lose out on the opportunity to get the product again. The same thing happened with me with the brand Too Faced. Sephora and Ulta Beauty sells Too Faced products, especially limited edition, so once the limited edition period was over, those products would disappear out of those stores. It was not too recent when I went on the Too Faced to browse their inventory, only to find that their “limited edition” products are “not so limited.”

As someone who is middle-aged, it's definitely frustrating to not see women and men in my age group represented, especially in skincare. Don't use a 20 year old model to sell anti-aging products and maybe have a variety of older people in a makeup campaign. When older folks are included, the look is almost always the same neutral no makeup sort of look. As Gen-Xers age, we are the generation giving the middle finger to arbitrary rules about how we are supposed to look. I loathe the term, "age appropriate."

Antoinette Gingras Hi, Try a Smokey eye in a brown or purple. It’s really pretty on older eyes with the lighter colours, I find black aging. Also I’m 54 and find Natasha Denona eyeshadow colours and shimmers perfect for older eyes, they look beautiful on. Much better than Viseart, Pat McGrath, ABH (although ABH Glam palette is stunning on), MELT, or Charlotte Tilbury. Natasha has a lot of older clients and she designs her formulas (especially the older palettes such as the green/brown 28-pan but also the newer mini glam, gold or nude palettes) for mature eyes. Also I love coloured eyeliners. Marc Jacobs eyeliners have always been my favourites but Fenty have just brought out some colourful eyeliners that are even more waterproof than MJ! I put the eyeliner on and then use a Zoeva 226 Smudger Brush to smudge/move the eyeliner to where I want it. Always looks good!! Sorry for rambling, I just love talking about and experimenting with makeup.

As a 50-year-old makeup enthusiast - I completely agree regarding brands needing to be inclusive. Makeup is not for specific races, genders or ages. It's a way for all of us to express ourselves. If a brand only wants to cater to 20-year-old caucasian girls, they are not tuned in enough to get my dollars.
@SpaceDementia_

I work at a drugstore and while tidying makeup I noticed a black model in one of the pictures (it was one of the main brands, might have been L'Oréal). It surprised me that I'd noticed so I looked around and realised EVERY single other model on these drugstore brands' promos were white. And clearly the only reason they'd chosen a black model for that product was because it was bright coloured eyeliner, so it stands out more on darker skin, whereas their other products presumably stand out more on lighter skin. These brands don't care about equality or inclusion, they literally only care about sales.

The person who says that not all brands need to cater to all skin tones, is obviously lucky enough to be in the middle range with a commonly provided for skin tone. They make me wish that a brand brought out the BEST ever formula, a complete game changer in the world of foundation. And only make it in super pale and super deep dark tones..... and feel what it's like to not be catered for, and have to miss out on the amazingness because "brands don't have to cater for all skin tones"

You could argue that an African brand sold in Africa, does in fact not need to cater to all skin tones. I think there's a difference with IF the brand caters and if stores in a particular location stocks all the shades. I can't see why a shop would have to stock shades that don't sell in that region.

It's really tough because I can't highlight my undereyes. I can only kinda match my skin tone and that only from one not even affordable enough for me brand. When I contour I always looks like I've got mud in my face. I know that it's extremely rare to find people with my skin tone or lighter but it feels shitty not being able to go to a drugstore and get makeup that has to do with my skin. It makes me feel way too pale. You're right about Scott Barnes makeup style, Rob. Beside his thick makeup, he's great in balancing colors and product placement. For example in Tati's first tutorial with him, she had multiple contouring+highlighting+bronzing products but Scott kept the brows, eyeshadows, and lips simple. I saw multiple looks from Jennifer, it's still balanced even though you will see and feel the heavy texture of her skin. Meanwhile, some people I found in IG/YT do all this stuffs, mixing all bold colors without color theory consideration and for me it looks....overwhelmed, too much. Also this is another reason why editorial makeup looks by some talented artists on magazine done perfectly, because they know how to balance and they have color theory game. Thanks for the video. I'd love to see your makeup videos with models ❤️

I’ve seen Scott Barnes do an everyday makeup look and it’s spectacular. The makeup he did on Tati for her channel and what he does on his RU-vid channel (and on Jennifer of course) is “editorial” makeup or stage makeup. He amps it up for the cameras. I saw him do a subtle smokey eye look on an older actress and she looked gorgeous. He is versatile. He just doesn’t emphasize it in the media because he doesn’t need to. Scott and Kevyn Aucoin (RIP) both made their names in how contour the face. His jawline colors and maybe heavy handed product works for his clients. His makeup palettes are divine, btw and, they work on every skin tone. **I am a big Scott fan, knew him a long time ago but I have no association to him.

On the other side, most brands miss like half the spectrum of darker tones that makes up a huge percent of the population! They don't leave them out because not a lot of people need them (like in my case). They leave out those tones on purpose because they're maybe racist or at least uninformed? It wasn't until the past 5-7 years that brands started getting "closer" to my true shade. Growing up, I always ended up too pink or too orange - even at say the MAC counter. The artists would always try to "make it work" and end up mixing several shades, which my teenage/early twenties self couldn't afford to buy. I'm happy to see brands stretching their range, but there's still a long way to go.

Man I feel this hard. I'm Korean/Black and I gave up on makeup for the longest time because 1. American makeup instantly broke out my sensitive skin back in the day like I put it on and instant bumps and 2. I'm in that same Medium-light category most of the time but hard to match since 2 seconds in the sun darkens me up so I had my pale neutral ass chest, dark golden yellow neck and my face shade changed constantly depending on how much of a hermit I could be. And ironically nothing was warm enough for me. Anytime someone tried to color match me since I knew zero about make up and still beginner now, it was too dark and/or too neutral. I was always in between shades and everything looked wrong. I just wanted to be like my friends or family who could pick out their shade but here I was having to guess at mixing stuff up to make it work for right color and work with my extremely picky, sensitive, oily oily skin. So its nice that I finally have stuff that I can actually wear after.... 9 years.

I can't get money for that all the time however, so the one I was using before was depending on coverage I want. Lighter days I use the Missha M perfect BB cream in 27, I have to use lightly colored powders on top sometimes with it and different ones depending on my skin shade at the time tho like Besame in medium and/or mixed with the warm tan or the Maybelline Fit me loose powders in I think medium. Medium coverage its the Colourpop stick foundation in 110w mixed with the A'pieu Madecassoside stick foundation. Sometimes I can get concealer that is much like the yellow I need but too dark and mix it with my just a tad lighter foundations to work. ^ ^;; Still have to mix but I can't wait to try out the Uoma one in summer for me. I think this is a bit of an American/European centric opinion. I do think there are places on Earth where a makeup company that only sells in say, one or two countries, would genuinely lose money if they made foundation colours for every skin tone. Whether that money loss is worth making 0.01 of consumers feel included is a calculation I think every business is going to have the same conclusion on.

Jörunn von Westernhagen Robert Welsh it could be a breif, affordable, class too with a test at the end. Like what we take in my state to get a food handlers card from the health department for food safety, but maybe a tad longer. It's one day, only a few hours long, and must be retaken every few years. I think its unfortunate that the US doesn't do that sort of thing for makeup application because beauty/cosmetology schools only cover sanitation as it relates to hair only. There are only a few makeup schools in the entire US so most makeup artists don't have the opportunity to attend one.

See for hairstylists, in Ontario, you need you be licensed to work in a salon and you need your card with you at all times cause if they catch you they’ll fine you and the salon that let you do that. It used to be if at least one person had to be licensed but you either have to be licensed or an apprentice you can’t just cut hair anymore not even in your own business/home. Which tbh makes sense. I think makeup artists need something similar to that cause all I know is you don’t need any certification or regulation to work in a salon as an mua

@469ka37

His point still stands whether it's a big brand, or a small one exclusive to that country. Not having shades to cater to other skin tones sends the clear message that that brand is not thinking of people like you. Also mentioning K and J beauty brands isn't the best example considering the rampant colorism in both of those countries. I guarantee you the limited shades they have are leaving out a huge chunk of the population that run darker and end up being targeted for skin bleaching products.

I once worked at a cosmetic counter that mostly attracted women with mature skin. My absolute favorite thing that I got to do was to teach customers that there is always a way. I have hooded eyes and very sensitive & dry skin, myself. And at one time, that made me feel a little alienated from the current makeup space. But you have actually been a part of inspiring me to start my own RU-vid channel. It hasn’t launched yet! But I’m so in love and inspired again. Everyone should know there is room enough for us all. About your last comment I had this happen to me in a store roughly 15 years ago. I went to buy some foundation for my very dark brown skin. I had problems finding it in drug stores so I went to this store because it was a makeup store. I walk right up to the clerk and I see the panicking her eyes. She walks me over to a counter and paints on the darkest color they have which was a dark peach. She looked like she wanted to cry I smiled and told her it was ok and I am not upset. I then went to Rotterdam and this man at the MAC counter who looked like you but with long hair hooked me up! I was a loyal customer to MAC and V&D till they closed. Now the first store I tried changed and does carry foundation in almost all shades but I always remember what happened years ago.
