Opeth is the best. The vocals alone sets them apart. Musically way ahead of the curve. The leader Michael is brilliant he also writes the drum parts and the drummer Martin Lopez is my favorite.
I absolutely love Opeth, incredible musicians, amazing songwriting. React to literally any other song, they won't disappoint. Amd definitely don't ignore their recent albums, they're fantastic 👏
Always blows my mind when someone’s able to go from Fry. Vocals to clean vocals. Musically pretty cool. Definitely hear some Steven Wilson influence in this song.
🔥🔥❤Opeth❤🔥🔥 Definitely a rabbit whole to go down! They're from Sweden, one of a kind (in my opinion )band and masters of transitions, melodies, exceptional musicianship & more. The 'current band' members - Mikael Åkerfeldt/vocals (clean and growling), lyricist, 2nd lead guitar & acoustic, composer and overall master of everything he does. Fredrik Åkesson also lead guitar Martin Mendez - bass Drums - Was Martin Axenrot until recently, but he left. New drummer - Opeth announced last week (approx. Sept 7th)the new drummer to replace Martin Axenrot is Waltteri Väyrynen who left Paradise Lost to join Opeth. Joakim Svalberg- keyboards/mellotron
Actually Opeth are big fans of Rush. Their early albums are progressive death metal but later they started to incorporate clean vocals and now their recent albums are mostly clean vocals.
Mikael actually explains all of that very well in a video made for Nuclear Blast Records: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Oj5IrsHzeno.html "I've moved on, so should you."
Opeth are fantastic, started as a death metal band Upto their current stuff which sounds like 70,s prog, mikeal akerfeldt the singer no longer uses growls on their recordings, but live you get a good mix of old & new, definitely a band you should check out more.
There is no other band like Opeth. That's really all I know to say, other than that they're one of the best ever. The death metal aspects faded away over the years and now they're still heavy, but in a different way. They're more of a prog rock band but the music remains ridiculously good. Hope you dive down that rabbit hole, man. Given this reaction, you'll never leave it.
I’ve been a huge Rush fan for years, also PT. Do yourself a favour and dive down the Opeth rabbit hole. They have such depth to their music and have all the best guitar riffs.
So many things to say. First is I have always loved his guitar tone. Always has a great sound on his leads and solos. Steven Wilson has worked with opeth a lot and has actually performed on some tracks both vocally and on keys. He also did album with the lead singer under the name Storm Corrosion. I despise it. Others love it. Not many are in the middle. It’s very experimental. As far as Opeth, they are perfect definition of prog. They have always been all over the place with some of the heaviest rifts and vocals to beautiful guitars and clean vocals. They did a double album release where one was a standard opeth album and one was all acoustic/clean vocals. There is a making of damnation and deliverance albums that has Steven Wilson in it. In fact, the touring keyboard player you saw in this video is there because of SW influence on opeth. While all their early albums have fry vocals, starting with Heritage, they dropped the fry and went mostly clean. And Pale Communion really took them to their current sound which is best described as 70’s psychedelic/prog rock. I LOVE that album. This is another rabbit hole as you stated. I’d probably do Steven Wilson stuff first as I think it’s more in your wheelhouse.
Never heard them before. Great musicianship. Didn’t realize they prog, always thought they were just death metal. Don’t really like the fry vocals but it wasn’t too much.
They’re pretty much the kings of super progressive death metal, they moved into more straight up prog metal and now even more just straight up prog rock without any harsh vocals, up through their album watershed they still did progressive death metal stuff but since very on they’ve always mixed clean vocals and softer stuff into their music so it wasn’t just 100% death metal the whole time. Their ability to go from real heavy death metal stuff to really soft beautiful sounding stuff with cleans is one of many things that makes them special. If you haven’t checked out more of their stuff since your comment I highly recommend you do, they’ve got an all time great discog with a ton of variety in it. If you like the more clean vocal stuff highly recommend their album damnation and then any of their last 4 albums heritage/pale communion/sorceress/ in cauda venenum, there are no harsh vocals on those 5 albums
Opeth up to and including Watershed is fantastic. After that, I just can't dig it. Check out The Funeral Portrait on the album Blackwater Park. It's Mozart-esque. Incredible.
Really great selection. Opeth are legends, giants in their chosen genre. Classic Swedish metal madness. So much going on here in terms of interesting riffs, strange accents, and grand orchestration. Don't know if you've ever checked out any of Death's work. The Human album is a monumental recording featuring one of metal drumming's biggest innovators, Sean Reinert. His work on that album is stunning. It's like Vinnie Colaiuta said, "Screw jazz, fusion, and session work, I wanna play death metal!"
Have tried to get into these guys due to the SW connection, but... nope. Cookie Monster vocals have no place in my collection. But the video of Mikael and SW doing a prog quiz in a pub is comedy gold. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-h2InJpqo_bw.html
I can understand not liking growls, but to say mikael is not a good singer... That's blasphemy.. My best tip for you is to treat growls as you treat distorted guitars..
Gaahhhh. Cookie Monster !!!! Naw. There is enough horror in the world with glorifying this garbage. Hard NO. Grown men pretending to be monsters. Like Kiss without the make up but with some serious musical skills. Excellent musicianship! Vocal styles?? Save for the clean stuff😂😂😂😂😂
@@JustinPanariello I could tell you like it, I meant to respond to the original comment. I have an irresistible urge to jump in when I see someone belittle harsh vocals. You don't have to like it, but don't put it down. I think, done right, it's pretty fucking cool that humans can sound like monsters.
