Def look up the story behind the album! The concept of the album ties it all together in a cohesive narrative. And some fun trivia: The guitar solo in Dead was inspired by the Woody Woodpecker laugh The beginning of Mama was partially done by Ray as a dare that he couldn’t write a polka The intro to sleep is Gerard describing the night terrors he experienced when staying at the Paramour Mansion where they did album pre production Mikey pushed for Disenchanted to be on the album bc it was his favorite, he’d randomly whisper the name of the song to the others Teenagers was inspired by Gerard being genuinely freaked out by teenagers on the subway when he was commuting

There's actually a lot of little things that are incredible about this album. To start, they lived in the Paramount Mansion during the recording of this album, which is said to be deeply haunted. During that time, they went to a dark place and it seemed to have the biggest impact on Gerard (Vocals) - he suffered from sleep terrors, during which he felt being suffocated, he saw people close to him dying and a plethora of other things, which inspired the song Sleep and the recording of him describing his nightmares was sampled in. Originally, they didn't feel like Teenagers should be on the album, but a school shooting occured and made them feel like it had to be on the record. In Mama, the woman's voice is actually Liza Minnelli. Famous Last Words was a sort of letter from Gerard to Mikey, as Mikey's addiction and mental state caused him to want to quit the band after being done with TBP, and Famous Last Words has these themes of going forward, moving on, continuing even through pain. And as a cherry on top, other bandmates didn't feel like Disenchanted should be on the album, but it was Mikey's (bassist's) favorite, so he often woke them up at night whispering about the song and in the end they put it, and it's one of my favorites so I guess I have Mikey to thank for that, lol. Oh! And Blood was originally only played after like 15 minutes of silence, so when it came out most didn't hear it unless they let the CD run after Famous Last Words ends.

Great video. Your breakdown and comments on all tbe tracks were excellent to hear. One of the more popular theories on the album is that the songs are split between the young cancer patient and the spirit who is supposed to guide him to the afterlife, but tries to get him to stick around. The spirits songs are Dead!, House of Wolves, How I Disappear, Mama, and Famous Last Words.
@lusciousluie
@lusciousluie Год назад
thank you for that! I have a much greater love and appreciation for the band now. I really like that theory a lot. there's a lot of duality between life and death here. I like the thought that these songs are from both points of view.

Nice work. I also discovered their music recently, and got to see them live in October. Holy crap, what an incredible live show! Do I need to ask you to do Danger Days next?

Wow. I enjoy listening to Dead, and playing in in hacked GH2 is always fun, but this is the first time I have heard the song described as "bright".

You 1000% need to look into the album's concept, there's a lot of theories if you want to delve deeper but when you connect the overall theme to the songs it's insane

love seeing you do this album. it’s been a favorite of mine since it came out, and it pretty much transcends musical genre tastes. everyone i know, no matter what they’re into, loves this album. hell, even gary holt from exodus and slayer called it “a masterpiece” so i refuse to hear any slander from anyone about it 💜

I feel like the "intro" transition to "the end" is a nice little thing you missed by stopping and starting.

This is only my opinion... But I think you may have missed the point of the hidden track "Blood". It took me a while to catch on. If you take the entire album into consideration... It's about a patient dying of cancer. "Blood' is basically him talking about his struggles in the hospital...They are constantly taking blood samples... He compares the staff to vampires... "Give them all that they can drink and it will never be enough". He feels as though they enjoy Torturing him..."A celebrated man among the gurneys."... "I'm the kind of human wreckage that you love" But in the end it will all be for nothing.. he is dying and he knows it.

I had a pair of strokes early 2005, mid 2006. Famous Last Words saved me when I was starting to give up. Am doing fine now. PS: If you listen to Jellyfish "Spilt Milk" [1993 post-psychedelic power/melodic pop, but just sooo many flavors] followed by TBP, it will be a fantastic experience. Though in SM, the lead character has already died and joined a parade (seriously). I am not afraid to keep on living!

Absolutely love watching these, you've picked some great albums. Although not super popular and you're likely gonna choose things that will help with bulk views and growing the channel, I'd love to see you react to Knife Man by AJJ/Andrew Jackson Jihad - just a great folk punk album with heaps of incredible lyrics.

I appreciate the feedback! so these albums are actually chosen based on what I consider to be essential for the genre that they explore. For instance, I hear a lot of my friends talk about Odd Future, Frank Ocean, Kendrick, Mac, etc. And others such as Radiohead, Arctic Monkeys, Gorillaz, and MCR are ones I've wanted to explore for many years. Long story short, I'm mainly choosing these albums for me and whatever the algorithm decides to do with them is what it is. I have no issues exploring smaller bands and artists, but the format may be different as they aren't in my immediate plans. I'm thinking about eventually doing a stream format to listen and talk about these suggestions live.

@@lusciousluie I really appreciate such a detailed and honest response! That's all great to hear and I'm glad you don't take bias towards small bands. In terms of recent modern Folk Punk stuff, I'd say anything by AJJ or The Mountain Goats as essential listening. Knife Man by AJJ and The Sunset Tree by The Mountain Goats, especially. Given how much I can tell you like interesting textures w/ blends of acoustic and electric instruments + deep introspective or storytelling lyrics, I think you'd really enjoy those albums so I'd love to see it eventually. I'm a songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and Producer here in Australia, so sometimes it's easy to burn out on music when you're doing it all the time - so these reactions/reviews genuinely give me joy by re-experiencing albums for the first time, so thanks heaps for all that you do! :) PS - since you seem to dig the emotive punk side of things, check out my band Talk Heavy, I write/produce/engineer/mix all our stuff and I think it'd be right up your alley :)

You should react to American Idiot by Green Day if you've not heard it before. It is a sort of rock opera like this with a sort of pop-punk/emo sound but it is a bit different from this album too

so, what is the album actually about? hell if i know, i aint that smart, but you know who is that smart, Sir Wendigoon the 1st, and according to him theres two stories being told, the one bout the patient and the one about the parader, wich acts as a sort of ferryman of the underworld
