MCR has been called "Queen Day", ie a mix of Queen and Green Day, which is not a terrible shorthand for their sound in parts of their career. I know they're very open about their admiration for and inspiration taken from Queen, and got to play with Brian May at one point. May, in particular, compared Gerard Way to Freddy Mercury, which had to be a hell of a thing for Way to hear; imagine one of your heroes telling you you're a lot like another of your heroes that the first hero knew very intimately. Hard to top that, I would think.

As someone who also plays guitar and has learned quite a lot of MCR songs, one of the things that I really really appreciate about their stuff is that it's so varied. Like even the simplest-seeming riffs have something extra in there. Or the repeating patterns change ever so slightly. It really keeps you on your toes when you're playing. Also it's super fun! Both to play and to listen to.

Early Sunsets is musically one of their best. Absolutely beautiful, especially Frank's part, it is the chord strumming in the background. Ray gets a lot of the kudos for the guitars in MCR, and for good reason. He's fantastic, he's the lead. Ray is one of the best today but Frank is no pushover himself. His ear for melody is far better than Ray. Even Ray himself said that Frank's ear can hear things his can't.

Your comment about The Sharpest Lives and the dichotomy between its sad lyrics and the upbeat pace made me realise something, and I'll put it here cos not a lot of people think about it. There's a concept in psychology called Mania. If something or someone is manic, they basically have feelings x2. Everything they feel is fast, in overdrive, pounding in their head and explosive in their actions, it usually comes with impulsive behaviours. The Sharpest Lives deals with this; "If it looks like I'm laughing, I'm really just asking to leave" isn't just a potential suicide allegory, it's how people might lowkey react to anxiety; present normally but inside they desperately need to get out of there. That or it's someone suffering from mania, they're laughing cos their brain can't process everything at once, neurons firing willy nilly and they're ending up laughing when they're actually scared and sad. In the media, you tend to see these people as simply "The giggly crazies," sitting in a corner and laughing. Another thing about mania, it can result in impulsivity and an excess of contradictory emotions, that's why there's the pun about "Why don't you blow me... a kiss" and then the moaning in the song; frequently some of the impulses that manic sufferers feel is flitting between depression, extreme happiness, sexual feelings and lethargy all in the space of like... minutes. It doesn't make sense that someone who's sad also wants to fuck all the time, but that's how Bipolar Disorder, Borderline Personality Disorder, Manic Depression and other conditions with manic symptoms frequently present. Most people are pretty functional, especially with therapy and meds, but when their feelings get the better of them and they are pushed off the deep end, they become self destructive, dangerous to themselves and potentially others (drop the dagger and laugh at the blood on your hands, Romeo) and it's a very stigmatised and not-talked-about condition that is really sad and difficult to deal with. The media portrays them as giggling murderers, detached from reality and that's so off base. That hammering sound at the beginning and end is how someone like this experiences all their powerful emotions at once, pounding inside their head, no matter if it's sadness or inactivity, everything is NOW everything is FAST everything is HERE everything is AAAAH and they can't process it without acting strange. The emotions are painful and their reactions are potentially harmful; they lead Sharp Lives and it's deadly to them if untreated. That's the best way I can describe it to someone who may have never seen manic symptoms, and it's obviously VERY simplified, and may present differently for different people. I may be wrong though, it's mostly my interpretation. Feel free to demolish me.

Loved this!! Gave me a completely new perspective to the song.. as someone who was once diagnosed with bipolar disorder and took meds for it (even if it turned out to not be bipolar 😅, i still researched a lot about it) , you are like totally right in how mania affects a person, and the song really does reflect that. I used to think the lyrics were all over the place and didn't make sense, but after this comment, I can 100% see it, and this new pov really made me like the song a lot more, so thanks!!!

One thing to note on this album for your next listen is that not all songs are from the view of the patient. The second character is a spirit of death whose job is to lead the patient to the afterlife, but also tries to convince the patient not to go and stay as a spirit. The songs Mama, This Is How I Disappear, House of Wolves, and Famous Last Words are from the spirits point of view imo.

Apple Music labels this as Alternative but most of it really isn't. Sure, one can say that anything with Punk influence technically falls under that umbrella, but the whole point of Alternative music is being music founded in certain genres but having distinct identities that don't follow the genres' typical traits. This album in particular, however, is very much inspired by traditional Hard Rock and Glam Rock with elements of Punk, Emo, and Metal thrown in, but it still feels very true to the classic Rock sound.

You almost have the story down. In this album it follows a patient who has 2 weeks to live (as dead points out). He actually dies in the song welcome to the black parade. Before he dies he's thinking back on life, and after death going through the afterlife and judgment, when finally in famous last words passes on.
@MattheBrawler
@MattheBrawler 13 дней назад
A theory I personally subscribe to, originally proposed by Windegoon, is that the story is told mostly out of order from two perspectives. The Patient and a spirit, we'll call him The Parader, watching it and both mocking the patient and reflecting. Hense The End and Dead are the Patient and the Parader both responding to the news of his diagnosis. A song that starts on harder more metal inspired chords and instruments are from The Parader's perspective and the more simple, often acoustic openings are The Patient's perspective. The exceptions are Teenagers and Mama, being the reverse, since they explain The Patient and Parader's origins respectively. The reversal on the songs that explain their back stories serves to highlight the similarities between both, young men who lost their lives unceremoniously and pointlessly from things out of their control.

He refers to the story being a "theory", making it sound much less confirmed than it actually is. Every MCR album has an underlying story that unravels throughout it, in Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge, for example, the story is about the Demolition Lovers, from their previous album, being separated in death and the male lover making a deal with the devil to try to reunite with her in heaven. (sorry for spoiling the experience)

fun fact most of the album was written when the band was staying at a haunted paramour mansion and they literally went crazy in there, gerard and mikey (the singer and their brother, the bassist) had a lot of mental and substance abuse problems already and that was the straw that broke the camel’s back i suppose. and other guys (ray and frank - guitar, and bob - drums) mentioned seeing ghosts in there and all that shit, apparently one of them was a lady in white, talk about torturing yourself for the sake of your art huh i think you should react to all of their albums (there’s four main plus a compilation of singles called conventional weapons that basically counts as the fifth, plus a live album and also they released a new song last year and truly it made my year it’s so good) but especially bullets, their first one, cause it’s so different to the black parade, more raw and punk

when i was 15 my 13yo sister got this album when it came out and mcr was just known as "emo shit" so i never listened to it at the time. the surprise i had like ten years later when i heard Mama and was like "WHAT is this", this album fucking bangs lol

ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mSTkywmK1Sc.html this moment, this right here captures what MCR feels like for me. It encapsulates all the voices in our minds and in our lives crying out all at once for so many things in this horrible, beautiful way. Their ability to give a coherent (mostly) voice to that feeling is probably the most powerful thing about them. Absolutely love this reaction

awesome video! i think it’d be a good idea to have the lyrics of each song pulled up in a separate tab to read when you can’t hear exactly what they’re saying, just so you can get the full experience :) definitely check out mcr more!

Yes, looking for part 2, but you are missing a lot when you pause to guess at meanings mid-sentence of the lyric. (Can't wait till you see an MCR video and discovery the number of guitars.) 😉 Btw, not every song is 'the patient story'. For example, I DON'T LOVE YOU is about the music industry. Enjoy!
