I’m pretty proud of this one! Making this video made me appreciate this song so much more than before. I have to mention, I didn’t find out until a couple of days ago when the creation was well underway, that someone has recently released a compilation of this. I normally try not to post songs that people have done recently but as you guys know from my poll on the community page, I’ve been planning this one for almost 2 months. I started working on it casually in April of this year. So I mean no disrespect to anyone by going ahead and releasing this one now. Big thanks, as always, to you guys… the viewers. You guys are fantastic! 💜 A few new things I heard that I never noticed before: 1. Bells or steel drums during the reggae sections 2. Ting ting ting of the triangle throughout (also the bell of a cymbal at parts) 3. Slight whispering behind a couple lines of the chorus I HIGHLY RECOMMEND: ONUKA (Ukrainian artist who I recently discovered and she is AMAZING!) “Time”: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_4Cswp7smQ0.html “ZENIT”: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-27J4HUj6Ko0.html
Excellent job on this - can you imagine how difficult it would have been for Rush to get air play in the 1980s especially with a song that lightly criticizes radio. Their success, as they have often mentioned, is due to their very loyal fans.
Just for context, I grew up a few blocks away from Geddy Lee back in the day. This song was a direct reference to a local independent radio station that broadcast from Brampton Ontario in the '70's. CFNY 102.1 their slogan was "CFNY - The Spirit of Radio" they had no playlists. They played obscure underground music of all types. No corporate rock. The different music breaks were referencing this, as they had a Reggie DJ as well who had his own segment. Rush loved them. Peace.
They were still doing interesting things in the late 80’s early 90’s, playing rock bands that were under the radar from the UK and North America, embraced the club scene and underground rave scene in Toronto at the time. Deadly Hedley was a great DJ at the time and if he liked a song he’d give it another spin and say “ So Nice We Have to Hear it Twice” with a slight Jamaican accent and it was always a big tune if not at the time than a month later. Good times.
We had two independent radio stations where I live back in the day and they were both college radio. Two really different formats. One had regular dj’s playing a more freeform format and the other station were college students filling in for an hour or two sometimes three. We had a black and white uhf television station that played music videos at least two years before anybody ever heard of mtv. All these independent stations really broadened my sense of music appreciation and awareness. I’m really lucky to grow up back then
@yyz4761 was that Muchmusic? Or a forerunner....I could DX sometimes, clock in MuchMusic videos from CANADA all the way out in Cleveland. In the US, we had community or listener supported radio as well as college stations. The community radio were run by a board of volunteer governors, and they usually had large libraries of real vinyl, especially reggae, but also classical, to punk to old blues, and barbershop quartet. I dont know how many are still in operation now. These would be dream places to sample from like they do in today's dance music, but that technology didn't really exist back then. Commercial radio probably doesn't have vinyl libraries at all nowadays. WMMS Cleveland broke RUSH in the states after they played "Working Man" which became a gianormous hit locally.
To Andy and Alex I was 18 when this song came out. I'm 61 now and it still blows my mind it has staying g power that will never end. It does my heart good to see people finally get it about rush. There musicianship is unmatched.
I was thirteen at the time. FM radio was simply magic back then. This was the first song that I ever heard from Rush and I’ve been a fan ever since. Imagine hearing The Spirit Of Radio on the radio for the first time
Momma. This was a masterpiece! I'm in my late 40s and seeing the joy of these younger people experiencing Rush just made ME start crying. It's like the joy of it over powered me. Simply amazing. You deserve all the subs and likes in the world. Thank you. Highlight of my day.
I have literally been rocking out to Rush since my mom went to see them in 1990 when she was 7 months pregnant with me. I love watching people experience Rush for the first time. I was lucky enough to see them twice before they retired.
Just done the exact same thing so I obviously feel the same way!!!!! Being a drummer and growing up listening to Rush, then watching these kids getting excited over the same song/band 40 years on…. WOW!!! What a great video…. Love it x
RUSH is THE PERFECT EXAMPLE of the fluidity of MASTERING TIME SIGNATURES! I play drums and there are a few things that you need to know about Neil Peart’s ( pronounced PEER-T) character: First he writes the lyrics so he knows in advance what TYPE of song it’s meant to be ie ballad, driver, etc. Second he COMPOSES on the drums… like a carpenter who looks at a set of blueprints before building the object. Neil lays out a SKETCH in his mind of the VOICES of the drumset and builds the song from there. He is also a great LISTENER knowing when NOT to step over Geddy’s singing or Alex’s solos! Finally, he had perfect timing and fluidity of time changes. He said himself that it’s not about COUNTING the time signatures as much as fluid motion to change the tempo without counting: in other words it should FLOW! He hates repeating the same drum patterns in the same song meaning if he plays a fill one way the first time around he will play it differently the second time around. IE. Rolls down the toms the first time around and triplets or quads (all four limbs) the second time around. In short there will NEVER be another like him on planet earth 🌍 🌏 🌎! REST IN PEACE PROFESSOR! With heart felt admiration and sincerity! Gary
Thank you for that informative description of Neil's style. I'm not sure if you've seen it yet but I did do a compilation for his Frankfurt solo... as a drummer you might enjoy that video as well. Apologies if you've already seen it! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_phjcbdWqKE.html Thanks again
Alex Lifeson, one of the best gutarists ever, Getty Lee one of, if not the best bass player ever, and Neil Piert, the greatest drummer ever. Together the most under rated band ever. Thank you Canada for these guys
We lost Neil Peart on January 7th 2020 to brain cancer! Geddy Lee called him: THE PROFESSOR because he had a verbal and musical vocabulary that I would put against anyone including Beethoven and Albert Einstein all this from a guy who didn’t graduate high school! Not only was he the drummer-percussionist of RUSH but he also wrote the Lyrics! RIP PROFESSOR
The one thing they all have in common is the smiles on their faces as they listen to this great track, their look of joy as the listen to a truly great band😊

Alex Lifeson: RUSH guitarist and Guru Extraordinaire! The HEART ❤️ AND SOUL OF RUSH! THE FUNNIEST MAN ON THE PLANET AND GREATEST SPEECH GIVER OF ALL TIME!!! ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME: BLAH…BLAH…BLAH! HATS 🎩 OFF TO ALEX LIFESON 😎😎😎👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🎸🎸🎸
Spirit of the Radio is one of my top 5 songs of all time and I revisit my obsession with it every few years. I've been amazed at how many reaction videos have been made for this song over the last year or two, when the song is over 40 years old. You put together a spectacular collection of reactions. A song that effortlessly makes me smile is (finally?) getting the recognition it deserves. Thank you for this.
Pretty simple : you get in your car in the morning and turn on the radio, looking for your jam, you turn the different channels searching for a song to make you happy.
I grew up in Toronto, in the 80's and you have no idea how much it warms my heart to see so many people enjoying "MY" band..!!! Yes, that's right, I've claimed RUSH as my own!! They are mine!! Haha!! Thank you from the Subdivisions Of Toronto
One of the best video compilations EVER! I've loved that song since it came out 43 years ago. To see so may different people loving it for the first time made my heart full. RUSH can bring the world together! Well done, WonderMommaOG!!! We are all human. World peace through RUSH!
I love how Ged's signal to the audience to clap is, well, how it is, ha...especially the way everyone is perplexed by it. Thanks for the hard work and featuring Rush! Pro quality vid!
From a Gary to Geddy your one of the most talented musician of all time! No one touches your talent on bass, keyboards, and singing! You are the definition of Unique and RUSH is not RUSH without your playing and vocals! To quote the movie: I LOVE YOU MAN! Alex and Neil as well!!
I was lucky enough to see Rush open their tour supporting the Permanent Waves album featuring Spirit of the Radio in January of 1980. I can still remember looking at the immense drum kit lit up in the dim arena just before the band opened with 2112.🤯
The final cut came out great! All that work paid off! I like the analyses you chose to include after completion of song, especially the appreciation of the band. 😊
Three dudes. I recall Rush on the old Rockline radio show in the mid-90s. After being congratulated by fans on their new album (Counterparts, maybe?), Geddy Lee said, "Thank you very much. Now we need to learn how to play it live."
All of you gave an amazing and funny reactions. It gives me pleasure to see you guys love the music I grew up with. I saw Rush live at Madison Square Garden back in 82/83 and they are just as amazing live. I am 61 now and I share this music now with my grandkids and I will ask you all to do me the same favor. Keep this great music alive I am counting on you to carry the torch😎✌🏻
NEIL PEART’S NARRATION ON EXIT STAGE LEFT DVD: There’s a tremendous ambiance about a concert hall…to even before a band starts playing…from the time the doors open..this place feels electric you know! That’s one of the things I like most about the road that feeling of standing in the hall when the doors open feel the excitement bursting into the hall. I must admit I feel very comfortable playing live a lot! A very modern urban setting for that Tom Sawyer mentality and a very carefree stride and a very self-possessed kind of air. Xanadu: The question we tend to ask the most often is WHAT IF? I think of you had to simplify a motivation or simplify a moving force in our music that would probably…suffice! Red Barchetta: Well it seems to me a car is one of those handy metaphors and volumes have been written about the sociological and cultural impact of the car and what it represents but it also has a very fundamental sensual feel and it’s a metaphor for sexuality and freedom. We’ve certainly tried to guide everything by the principles that were interested in and the freedom of choice and the material we’ve been playing and expression of music that we found to be exciting would excite other people as well. If the songwriting is important and playing really well on stage is important it’s gonna make the difference between feeling good or not feeling good when I walk off stage feeling that I played as well as I can or as close to well as I can then I feel very satisfied and good for what you have done. YYZED: I think there is a very strong relation maybe not generally recognized between drums and between words as the rhythmic structure and phrasing and the rhythm of verse especially is very strongly rooted in the same syncopation as drums the same patterns of thinking overall work for me with words as much as they do with drum beats.
I've often wondered what it is that makes reaction videos so entertaining. To answer, at least for myself, it is twofold: (a) first, it is about watching people experience the joy I had when I first discovered Rush and their greatness; and (b) second, it is about sharing what I've since learned since and helping them along in their future discoveries. What a tremendous tribute to the most beloved and, at once, underrated, band in history and one of their many great compositions! Thank you for this masterwork - about a masterwork!
Absolute Fire Ms. Wonder! Another masterpiece! It’s crazy to think that during the mid 80’s I actually got a little tired of listening to Rush, they were everywhere, selling out stadiums for decades, however, seeing all these reactors react to songs for the first time makes me love all these songs even more than I did before! I know it’s a lot of work to put these together, but I (we) are grateful, and I (we) hope you never stop! Thank you Ms. Wonder!
Geddy Lee - Bass guitars, Oberheim polyphonic; OB-X; Mini-Moog; and Taurus pedal Synthesizers, vocals Alex Lifeson - Six and twelve string electric and acoustic guitars, Taurus Pedals Neil Peart - Drums kit, timbales, gong bass drums, orchestra bells, glockenspiel, wind chimes, bell tree, tubular bells, crotales, cowbells, plywood, wood blocks, triangles, tympani, and Gong!
Your videos are flawless. Other compilations don't even come close. The time and effort you put into these is obvious. I loved "The making of" section.
One of my favorites from RUSH. it's great to see such a diversity of people rockin out to this song. It goes to show the power of music . Great job on the video by the. OOOORIGHT ✌☮ 👍👍
This was the opening song for their shows for years. They just dove right in baby. God those shows were astonishing. You left physically spent every single time. They ring every ounce of energy out of you.
Simply Incredible Mash Up..What’s intrigued me about reaction videos. Is to realize they’ve never heard these songs before. And thanks to you, I’ve gotten turned on to so many other reactors channels. So your not only blowing me away. But opening new doors for me to discover so many younger people getting turned on. To the music of my Life. Thank You So Much, I Appreciate you and all your hard work. ❤️🙏💜
This is my essay to people who may not know RUSH or who Neil was professionally and his contributions to the art of drumming and lyrical writing! Enjoy! I adore when ppl hear my favorite band & of course the GREATEST band of all time RUSH. I flipped over the Holy Trinity of rock from day one in June of 74 at 14 years old & playing Bass three years at the time. I'm 62 going on 63 & I've never put it down. To this day I'm still rocking out on stage in local bands & I must admit, Rush was the ONLY BAND EVERY ALBUM made me run home when I got they're new album at the time & grab my bass & want to learn not only every song they recorded but learn theroy time signitures rudements, the whole bass & music shabangabang. The greatest music teachers I ever had & they never knew what they did to that 14 year old kid back then ha ha.
Another win, Momma! Back to back, Spirit of Radio is my all time Rush favorite song! Thanks for bring us awesome reactions and keep up your good work! Greetings from Brazil 🇧🇷
This song about the beauty of radio back in the days before the internet made every song available at any time has absolutely destroyed me with nostalgia. Plus it is just a fantastic song. Such a great video. I watched it twice.
One of my all time favorites. Nothing is better than watching it blow someone's mind for the first time. Watching it blow 20 people's minds for the first time? Chef's kiss. You got me subbed for life. I especially like how you show at the end now how you put these together. Mad skill picking those timestamps and lining it all up. Highest respect!
We did not dissect the music. We just heard it and loved it. Our radio stations would play this and Earth Wind And Fire and we never ever distinguished. We just loved listening to music.
Love this! As a Rush fan who jumped on when moving pictures was new.... you nailed it and had some of my fav reactors. I also appreciate the sound quality and the fact that you didn't interrupt the master shot. Love also how you took the animation suggestion. Great work
Your editing skills are chef’s kiss🤌🏽 I feel the feelings the people are feeling while watching. It’s special. Thank you for your hard work and gift. ❤
I have been listening to Rush since 1980. This is a n amazing song. But then aren't they all RUSH are the greatest band in the world. So amazing to see people react to the band I grew up with. So happy . Rest in peace Mr Neil Peart. You will always be in my heart. PS.Alx Lifeson is the greatest guitarest in the world.😎😎😎😎
I watched this twice yesterday and I can’t get over how brilliant your editing skills are. Thank you for doing these. I know they’re time consuming and your finished products are always appreciated. I look forward to your next project.
This came out near the end of 5th grade. I was going through puberty and it was harsh year on me because I was the 1st boy in my grade to deal with it... at least I think I was. Also pretty sure that this song saved me. I recall distinctly playing it in my head in one of the classrooms near the end of the year and just feeling an unmistakable and remarkable feeling of uphoria and calmness... maybe because the lyrics talked of the struggle and the joy of something so wonderful as radio - and I loved the radio so much - and I understood that something so great is sometimes not easy to deal with... and so is life... so everytime I hear this song I get the same feeling of uphoria... 😄and then just a little bit of melancholy..🥺 So effing good. To this very day.

The Aladdin reference is absolutely perfect.RIP Neil the professor. The goat.My friend.Ill mention the carpet ride in my daily prayers to Neil.He always travelled on his Motorcycle between gigs.Much to the distress of all the crew.He told me once .Riding his bike rather then the tour bus was like a magic carpet ride.
This video is just absolutely amazing. I have been a huge rush fan for many years. Thank you for all your work on this content!!! Love watching people discover and react to Rush for the first time. Keep it up!
Still hard to believe, after all these years- that three talented musicians could make such an enormous and wonderful impact so large. This is the first track I remember hearing from Rush in the US as a kid. All time favorite band.
Wow hats off to ya! That was a wild ride! It makes me emotional seeing how Rush still brings joy into people's lives! They are a gift and so is montage! Respect to ya WonderMommaOG! Beautifully done
I was blessed to get to see Rush three times in my life. That's three evenings I would not trade for ANYTHING. They are the epitome of greatness in every way.
lol Yes, this one took a little bit... I wanted to take my time with it but had some roadblocks along the way including parts of the multiple section edits disappearing and having to redo them. Thank you!
