With his writing Moffat isn't judging Clara. Some other characters may be, but all because Moffat wrote those lines doesn't make them his views. Its the same with writers writing racists aren't necessarily racist themselves.

Actually, I think Moffat was calling out the fandom in that scene. I remember that when the announcement of Capaldi was made, some on the internet voiced their disappointment that they went from Dreamy young Matt Smith to the Older Capaldi. This was Moffat basically calling out those fans by reminding them that the Doctor is not their fantasy boyfriend or whatever. And to some extent, Clara's response in that scene was intended to be the Voice of TRUE fans of the show who are NOT swayed by a pretty face and are in it for the substance. Similarly, the closing scene when Matt Smith says that the Man she is with is more scared than anyone, he was actually talking about Capaldi who was Taking on such an Enormous role and terrified that he would not live up to its legacy.
@Xanderj89
@Xanderj89 9 месяцев назад
I mean, you'll often find racists using racist characters just so they can have them say racist shit and then go "no, I'm not racist, it's the *character* saying it!" The only time that's not the case really is when they're using it to target the racist as the butt of the joke or to exaggerate it specifically to call out the racism, in a specifically anti-racist intention, but when they're just writing racists it's like, they're still choosing to publicly say racist shit to their audience when they didn't have to so it's always sus at best like when shows will put in rape scenes and then go "no you see, it's period accurate!" and it's like no the point is that you decided to put it in at all

The weird will-they-won't-they of Clara and Eleven was frankly a very nothing, kinda rote relationship. But Clara and TWELVE? Them realizing that yes, they had a physical attraction to each other, but that such a thing just now isn't possible, and was perhaps a mistake, allowed them to appreciate and love each other on SUCH a deeper level. And I LOVE that aspect of them moving forward. Because those two ABSOLUTELY love each other, and it IS still a bit physical, but so much more deeper than that, and they both know it, but can't speak it. It's SO MUCH RICHER a relationship than what they had before. Capaldi is my favorite Doctor, even though a lot of his stories aren't my favorite. And Paula better not watch those "Next Times On" cause they get HUGELY spoilery during these years.

I loved 11/Clara because they were light and sparkly and joyous. I loved 12/Clara because they were messy and complicated and beautiful. I saw them as a cross between 4/Sarah Jane (platonic soulmates) and 9/Rose (connection is romantic but he feels like it shouldn't be). And I think someone else came up with his theory, but when 9 changed to 10 it was like he was trying to change to a form Rose would really like, and when 11 changed to 12 he was trying to change in a way Clara *wouldn't* like.

Though Clara is well aware of regenerations, this is the first she's experienced in person. Also, in a way, watching a regeneration is akin to watching a friend recovering from brain damage. Their behaviour changes in many ways, and so there's an element of trying to relearn who they are all over again. This is why I'm not as bothered by Clara's initial reaction to the change.

I never thought Clara was saying she wasn't in love with the Doctor. I always took it more that she didn't love him BECAUSE he was a handsome man. She was saying that she was more interested in the intelligence and stuff rather than just being a shallow girl who's mad because he's no longer the handsome young man. I'll have to listen to it again, but I'm pretty sure throughout that speech she never really says she wasn't in love with him. Not that I'm complaining, I always prefer it when the companion isn't in love with the Doctor. Donna just being a mate, Amy in later seasons just being like a family member.

I've always viewed Moffat as using Clara's character as those audience members who were really put off at first by Capaldi's casting as the Doctor. The Madame Vastra/Clara scene and Eleven's phone call were, for me, Moffat talking to that part of the Doctor Who audience, kind of calling them out with the first scene, and extending an olive branch, and asking to give Twelve a chance with the Eleven phone call. All that said, while Eleven is my favorite, Twelve is phenomenal. Capaldi is an old school Doctor and such a tour de force.

Capaldi is my favourite Doctor, his character arc is so wonderful, and befitting an actor of his calibre. He's a tough watch at times, both compelling and yet somehow able to convey the more "alien" aspects of the Doctors character more than any incarnation we have seen thus far. He is not a human and as much as we would love to anthropomorphise him, he is capable of acting in ways that are alien to us. He has just spent 2000 years on Trensalore, he has had to deal with his own mortality, he has regenerated past his allotted number of regenerations, he is breaking new ground and this has sent him on a soul searching mission. However, with support and guidance from his friends and the occasional arguments where he is called out and has to learn that his actions have real consequences, his journey of self discovery is a wonder to behold. Capaldi did an outstanding job with this character and quite rightly earned the love and respect from a majority of Doctor Who fans. My Doctor, and it's going to be a whopper! x

Also, Clara with 12 is 100% my favourite duo. I know the Clara haters are going to arrive in force, but she is the perfect foil for Capaldi's interpretation. She's clever, so clever, she's quick to act and always steers him right with unswerving loyalty and belief in his abilities! Yes, she makes a bad decision or two, when her mind is preoccupied, but who hasn't? She grows as a person, as does the Doctor, they learn from each other and their story is one of love, loyalty and absolute trust in one another, even if that belief is unwise or maybe dangerous! I was irritated by Clara's reactions too when I first watched these (I was irritated by Rose's reaction to 10 as well, but as she was only 19 and had no idea what regeneration even WAS, she got some slack from me...) Clara, having run through the Doctor's entire timeline, had no excuse for being freaked out by it as far as I was concerned. On further reflection I started thinking perhaps Clara thought that each new regeneration would be younger (looking) than the last, which, with a few exceptions, was the general trend. Or maybe she assumed that each Doctor would start young looking and age until the next regeneration. Suddenly she is confronted with a Doctor who looks twice as old as the one she first met, and as old as or older than any of the Doctors she has seen (except the War Doctor) and she is thrown for a loop by it. I still think her reaction is a little much for someone who has known of every regeneration the Doctor has had, though I do chalk it up more to the writing.

Twelve is, by far, my favorite of the five "Modern" Doctors we've met so far, to the point that I've cosplayed him at NYCC. He has an actual ARC over his incarnation (much like Ten, though Ten's arc is to mainly get more-and-more hurt over time until he's broken). And Capaldi might be the best pure actor to ever play the Doctor. His chemistry with Jenna Coleman is absolutely ridiculous, and I will refrain from saying what I very much want to say about the differences between the relationships between Eleven and Clara and Twelve and Clara once you guys are further along. I have many, many thoughts, and it drives me up a wall the way certain assumptions are made by viewers because of the shift from Eleven to Twelve.... Brief point.... The Doctor is not "over 2,000 years old." He's something like 5,000+ years old, possibly far older. He forgets. There's an assumption among deep fandom that he reset his age with the Time War, since he appears to have fought the Time War for centuries as the War Doctor (and avoided it for centuries as Eight), and kept changing his age with earlier incarnations. We really don't know, but he's definitely a LOT older than 2,000.

Not to mention episode 1 of series 6, doctor is like 2100, then hes 1800.. so he's been going on 300 year long adventures on his own between visits with companions. And when they revisit lake Silence he's once again 2100.. So every time he drops someone off and comes back, that could be any number of years.. Like you said with the time war, those years count even if the doctor ignores everything about the War Doctor aside from the war itself and the moment. Trenzalore was also a few centuries long. My non-spoilery question would be... during that one Capaldi episode.. do all those years count?

Yeah, I always laughed when the new series Doctors would say they were 900ish years old. Especially as he was 953 as the Seventh Doctor back in 'Time of the Rani'. I used to always joke it was somewhat of a vanity thing, like humans saying they're just 30 or 40 when they're older than that.

I don’t know about anyone else but Clara was my favorite companion from the moment I saw her. I loved her so much and ngl it hurt a little when she was getting shit on in the episode but I also saw the moment as a little necessary. For Vastra, she cares about the doctor and has always been one of his most faithful allies, so to see Clara, someone who hasn’t known him as long, treating him that way and being as flustered and confused as she was, saw fit to test her resolve because she knows how important it is for the doctor’s companions to have his back no matter what. She didn’t want this new doctor who was clearly dazed and confused from regenerating to have a companion who would abandon him so easily. So like I said it hurt a little cause I love her so much but I think it definitely needed to happen

The regeneration into Capaldi is a very special one. Capaldi has always been a fan of the show, at 14yrs old, he wrote a letter to the BBC detailing why he should be the president of the Dr. Who fan club. He got into acting because he wanted to be the Doctor one day. Unlike everyone else for who, playing the Doctor was the role of a lifetime, for Capaldi, it was the role he spent his entire life preparing for. What you're seeing isn't just a new Doctor, it's a man achieving a life-long dream.

I feel like, in this episode, Clara was written to be the audience. Around the time of Peter's casting, there were (especially new Who only fans) who were not receptive to the casting as well as the usual "I miss the last doctor" mentality we all get. Even the name of the episode ties in I think. Take a deep breath, look at him, he is the doctor, the same one you have known. Yay im glad paula already likes my doctor. So here's a little bit of my reason for calling him my doctor. So tennant and smith played the doctor as putting up a facade. Tennant played the doctor as desperately needing to be right because he needed to convince himself that his decision to nuke gallifrey was the right one so his facade is the man who is always right and thats where the arrogance comes from. Smith played the doctor as desperately wanting to look like a good man. Hes faking it until he makes it and the only person he has calling him on his coldness is rory. With capaldi you can already see in this episode that theres no facades. He isnt hiding himself anymore. He is frank and honest that he doesnt know who he is anymore and thats why i love him so much.

Hello Katrina & Paula a great greeting from my country El Salvador. I just comment on the following, very possibly this has already been heard by Katrina, there is a theory about the doctor's regeneration process. In this theory it is mentioned that regeneration can be controlled by the conscious and subconscious. The first example could be between the 9th and the 10th doctor (the 9th as you know he spent a good time without human company with a severe case of ptsd because of the time war) at the end of the series when he realized that he was in love with Rose his subconscious regenerates him at 10th, young, attractive, and looking similar to Rose's age. The same would apply after the specials of the 4th series. At the end this was his last regeneration and he will died for real . His subconscious was afraid of dead so he change into a younger doctor, and so on until he reached Capaldi. just before making the change, the 12th doctor saw Amy, she is Scottish therefore it may be that the new accent is a reflection of Amy Pond. well this is more or less the explanation of the theory that I have seen about the regeneration process. Finally girls I love to see your videos I do not miss them every week.

Clara was never meant to be perfect good ole companion. Her characteristics push her to the higher limits that basically destroyed other companions (look at Donna, who almost died by becoming the Doctor). She starts as mystery gimmick, to then turn into quirky love interest, to co-protagonist, to the borderline antagonist. She is too perfect for her own good, which pushes her often to the toxic Mary Sue territory. This is what Doctor does to people - he twists them and pushes them to do stuff they wouldn't normally do, just his presence changes who they are. Which will be perfectly reflected in one of speeches made next season. And that's why it is ok for Moffat to write her that way and then later bash for those characteristics. RTD did that with Martha and her crush, Rose and her teenage nativity. Also I did like how Clara did stand against Vastra - normal people wouldnt tell the truth, they would deny their embarrassing feelings. No one likes being told that they are wrong.
@MarieAnne.
@MarieAnne. 3 года назад
Yeah, not only is she told she is wrong, but that she is a bad person for feeling the way she does. People are bad because of their actions, not their feelings, so I think it was quite appropriate for Clara to react the way she did. Yes, Vastra may have understood Clara's feelings, but Clara wasn't so much denying her feelings as she was denying that she's a bad person because of them. And she did show that she could rise above those feelings, and in the end, we can change our feelings by changing our actions. (If we did it the other way, waiting for our feelings to change, we might never change our actions).

Peter Fernando doesn't get the appreciation he deserves for playing the half-face man in this - he manages to play a character that is both facially static and robotic, AND give him moments of pathos and sympathy. The moment when he says "we will reach the promised land" - his face shows no emotion and yet somehow the stillness conveys sadness and weariness...

I agree. Loads of actors seriously kill it playing 'monster of the week' in episodes like this but often get overlooked since they aren't the star of the thing. @@karlmortoniv2951 Yes, Harry Lloyd is one of the really great one-off villains in the modern show's history, entirely terrific throughout (all that plus I've a feeling he's deliberately channeling Malcolm McDowell because of 'If' and so on - that lop-sided smile is pure Clockwork Orange).

@@petersvillage7447 I wonder how that part was written in the script? I’m not trying to take credit from anyone, I’m honestly curious whether it said that Baines would be precisely that kind of peculiar after he got taken over to give more of a personality to the otherwise unseen Family? Did Harry shoot the moon in his audition and unleash his inner weirdness and got the gig that way? I keep meaning to go back and reread the original book and see how/if it’s treated in that. It’s been decades, but I remember the original story (which was about a different Doctor and companion) being a more straight faced affair in which something like Harry Lloyd’s performance would be out of place. They did an amazing job adapting it to the new show. 😊
@petersvillage7447
@petersvillage7447 3 года назад
@@karlmortoniv2951 I don't know the answer, but I suspect that what Harry Lloyd brings to his character would actually be difficult to properly convey in writing, so my feeling is that springs largely from the actor's interpretation. Mind you, I would be amazed if Cornell hadn't baked the influence of Lindsay Anderson's 'If' in there from the beginning - that film is rather savage about boarding schools and frankly, machine gun training in a boarding school is something I'd only ever seen depicted in 'If' before Human Nature - it's an image you pretty much couldn't use without bringing 'If' too mind. Once you get to 'If' you've got to Malcolm McDowell - and while Baines isn't particularly like McDowell's character in If, a door has been opened to allude to the taint and malevolence that McDowell came to represent in his career. While McDowell's performance in Clockwork Orange is often sullen and vile, he cultivates a humourless, one-sided smile that is quite menacing. Mr Lloyd seems to have taken that and dialled it to eleven...
