Yeah Francesca Michelin was selected because the Festival of Sanremo is not a competition about selection for Eurovision, it is a very completely different story. Sanremo festival was created before Eurovision and actually Eurovision was created from its model. It is asked to the winner of Sanremo if they want to rapresent Italy to Eurovision, that's why Francesca Michelin was selected after the winners of that year refused. Many years ago there were a different selection for the rapresentative that's why other singers were selected as you remembered 👍

I would be very surprised if Diodato isn't in the top 5 with the juries. Maybe not so high in the televote, but a top 5 overall would not shock me at all.

I agree Diodato's song was much better than Gabbani's but he got the most votes from the public while Diodato was only third by a wide margin. I thank the press jury for picking the right song. The Pinguini would for sure have been a great choice for Eurovision, maybe even better than Diodato, but I'm glad he won as he had for me the strongest song. Sanremo is a very long standing competition that pre dates Eurovision and so people vote for the best Italian song not which song has the most potential to win the Eurovision.

Thanks a lot for your reaction. I personally can't make any kind of prediction about it 'cause the variables involved are so numerous, and I prefer to wait and just see what happens, enjoying the greatest European music in the meanwhile. Diodato's entry is seen not to fit the Eurovision's criteria by many, and they're probably right in a way, for hard that it be to say how inflexible these criteria really are. Nonetheless, I wouldn't have seen either Pinguini or Elodie (the other two most appreciated and suggested entries from 2020 Sanremo) as having that many chances. I feel like there have alredy been a lot of songs like Pinguini's "Ringo Starr" on the ESC stage and there's going to be one or two this year, too, for sure. And though I don't dislike Elodie's "Andromeda" as itself, I've been perceiving it just as Mahmood coming back in female disguise (the song having been produced by himself with Dardust)... and I'm not sure it would've had a good effect on a European context still thrilled by last year's hype. Coming up with a ballad is risky, I think everything's possible. But as someone already said, Italy doesn't choose the Sanremo winner depending on their chances at ESC, so... it'll be okay in either case.
