Let's face it these two guys would love the concept. The real TR and Winston would have fallen down laughing throughout the raps and joyfully applauded each other's best shots and burns.

Anytime you ask yourself, "did this line mean this, or that?" there's every chance they meant both. Double meaning lines are big in battle raps, and these guys are incredibly on top of their research and their rhymes.

“A bullet can’t stop the bull moose!” There is actually a crazy story for that line. Now President Roosevelt’s nickname was the bull moose and before he gave a big speech he was actually shot in the chest. And do you know what he did? He went to the podium, told the people “I’ve been shot so I will try and keep this brief.” (Paraphrasing) He then gave a speech that was somewhere between 84 minutes before he allowed himself to get treated. And he didn’t die from that! Hell there is a saying about it, “The Reaper took Roosevelt in his sleep, because if he was awake there would have been a fight.” Roosevelt may not have done as much or as famous as some of the other presidents but you can not deny he was the definition of manly.

You should totally do more ERBs since they're surprisingly historically accurate, especially the later ones

Actually TR was in Louisiana hunting when he came across the black bear cub. He refused to shoot it. He then found out that the Louisiana Black Bear was dying out and so created the Endangered Species Act which the Louisiana Black Bear became the first species protected. After that the species was nicknamed the Teddy Bear. The toy actually started off as a souvenir sold to tourists to represent the Black Bear.

a few things: Roosevelt is a role that Epic Lloyd has been waiting to play for YEARS! Teddy was regularly used for update videos, and Lloyd voiced him for all those videos...that's what the line of "you look like a mix of Epic Lloyd, and a Pringle's packet" is referring too. Dan Bull is a British RU-vidr and rapper, and whenever Dan and Lloyd are against each other in battle, the battle is pretty epic.. Dan Bull is the guy who plays Winston Churchill. They used the State of Alabama for the representation, because the actual square footage of Mainland Great Britain is closest to the square footage of the state of Alabama. The "I might be battling you even though I'm toasted, but tomorrow I'll be sober, and you'll still be roasted" line comes from a quote of what Churchill once said to a female journalist who was, apparently, giving him a hard time. His line was, "Betty, while I may be drunk, you are certainly ugly. And while tomorrow I'll be sober, you will still be ugly." I think that's all the points to make....this is one of their best videos, IMO.

The part where TR freezes and his mouth moves ("What's up, bitches?") is a bit of an inside joke/throw back to when the channel was in its first seasons: the boys would give updates using TR like a puppet, exactly like that. It was fun to see if you've watched their earlier videos.

One line I just caught this time was "TR will give WC the full deuce"... Because a toilet is also called a water closet (WC) in England.

As an American, there's much to admire in Teddy Roosevelt - breaking up the monopolies, being the first President to establish a National Park in Yellowstone, etc. - but the man never met a war he didn't like, sadly (like leading his own 'Rough Riders' in Cuba). As for Churchill, yes - he was responsible for the travesty that was Gallipoli Campaign, and owed much to FDR during WWII with the Lend-Lease program and wasn't exactly 'devastated' by the attack on Pearl Harbor, as it got the US into the war - but he was also a great voice for keeping Britain together during its darkest days. So, they were both great, but also flawed men.

There's a reference to a famous line (supposedly) by Churchill in "I might be battling you even though I'm toasted, but tomorrow I'll be sober and you'll still be roasted". There's a story that he was at a party one time and a woman confronted him for being drunk, and he answered back "Madam, I may be drunk, but tomorrow I shall be sober; however, you will still be ugly."

Teddy is a big boy president but when compared to George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, & Abraham Lincoln he's a bit less impressive in people's eyes. So the insult of bass players being the smallest part of the band.

Something that ERB didn't mention in their video: There's a river in Brazil named after Theodore Roosevelt. In 1913-14, Roosevelt co-led a scientific expedition in the Amazon to find the source of the river and it was later named after him.

Teddy was Assistant Secretary of the Navy. He quit ofter the beginning of the war to form his own unit, the Rough Riders, that fought in Cuba. The most famous engagement he took part in was the Battle of San Juan Hill. He also tried to fight in WWI, but the president at the time bared him from serving.

So i dont know if anyone said this already but just in case. The line "walk softly over here and give my big stick a suckle" refers to Rosevelts "big stick diplomacy" baced off his quote "speak softly and carry a big stick". It a bit more important in American history but less so for the rest of the world. Ps just found your channle and i look forward to looking at history through a new lens.

14:18 "Hiding in your tube" propably refers to the brits taking shelter in subway tunnels during air raids.

The thing is with the bass in a band, you don't notice it when it's there. But if you take it out the song doesn't even sound the same.

Let’s be honest. Roosevelt won it though... Also, when he said “give my big stick a suckles”, there’s a cartoon detailing him carrying a big stick and pulling ships like it was a wagon. So when he says, “give my big stick a suckles”, it has more that one meaning.

The teddy bear story actually went TR went hunting with friends to hunt bears, but he kept missing his shots, so his friends injured a bear so TR could get his "prize", but TR saw the bear and said no and let the bear go free

I don't know this has been mentioned, Roosevelt resigned as the assistant Secretary of the Navy to form the Rough Riders to fight in Cuba

I believe the "best go hide in your tube" line is talking about how the British hid in the London Metro or "The Tube" during the bombings.

Two things, one, Theodore Roosevelt used the word bully to mean great, and two, he refused to shoot a tied up bear, so someone made stuffed bears and called them teddy bears.

The line about "growing a spruce mustache to cover part of it up" is a reference to a line about covering his own ugly mug with his giant mustache.

I wish they would have mentioned the fact that Winston's mom was an American. His dad had a title and she came from money.

The teddy bear came about in the U.S. when park officials tied up a bear when Theodore Roosevelt was on a hunt to make sure that he would be able to shoot one and that's why Teddy is famous for saying that it was not sporting to shoot it and let it go instead. I believe that there are pictures of it that were in the newspapers of the time.

This is probably one of my favorite ERBs. It's nearly impossible to pick a winner. Anyone who claims a "blow out" by either side here isn't being honest. Lol. But yeah, do more ERBs. They have quite a few good ones (Ivan the Terrible v Alexander the Great, Shaka v Julius, Fawkes v Che) and their recent Oppenheimer/Thanos matchup is really good, too.

What I appreciate even more about this battle is the fact that they cast an actual Brit for Churchill and not someone faking an accent. ERB has always had this great dedication to portraying their characters perfectly and I love that.

Teddy Roosevelt wasn't the navy secretary -- that was Churchill; he was naval minister during WW1. During the Spanish-American War, Roosevelt raised a volunteer cavalry regiment called the Rough Riders and their most famous action was the assault on San Juan Hill in Cuba. That's the meaning behind that line. When you're talking about a US president who wanted to intervene while the rest of the country wanted to remain neutral, that was Franklin D. Roosevelt, not Theodore. The line "kiss my cousin's ass" is a reference to Franklin, US president for most of WW2.

A small detail many would miss: After Roosevelt gets shot there are lightnings and you see a man riding a horse when Roosevelt speaks and paratroopers when Churchill speaks.

Teddy was specifically a "Rough Rider", America's last horse back unit, during the Spanish War in Cuba and personally charged hills with his unit.

It took me a long time of mentioning it to then on every video before they picked it. I kept giving them ideas and reasons for it. I’m glad when they finally did it.

The "tomorrow I'll be sober, but you'll still be roasted" is a brilliant callback to a true story about Churchill: He didn't have much love for female MP and when one of them (in fact the first one) called him "disgustingly drunk" at a social gathering, he responded with: "My dear, you disgustingly ugly. But tomorrow I'll be sober and you will still be disgustingly ugly." And there are so many more clever lines in these ERB, I still find new references when I watch them over and over again. Took me at least three times to get the "rough riding" reference. (It's the nickname his unit from the spanish-american war got.)

Edmund Morris wrote a trilogy of books on Roosevelt that are really, really good. Highly recommend them if you haven't read them.

Please don't stop doing these! 2) Please keep in mind that I am American born, my family has been since prior to the American Revolution (think about the original Dutch settlers of North America back in 1624!), so I may be just a *tad* biased 😳 A) I personally believe TR won this. But I may be a little biased... B) Passionate game hunter for trophies. That is one thing I honestly don't like about him. I believe hunting should be kept as originally intended- to put food on the table. No matter what animal it is, if it can be edible after cooking, it should be reserved for necessity only. C) Churchill.... I still cannot believe how much alcohol he could take without being totally flagged, or how he could even manage being upright when he was flagged! My boyfriend's father is Brit born and from him I've never, ever heard of Brits being able to tolerate alcohol as well as that man could. D) "Walk softly over here and give my big stick a suckles!" Reference to the now time honored phrase coined by him; 'Speak softly and carry a big stick'. My personal interpretation is that you should keep quiet, watch others actions and only take action when needed, being strong and swift about it. E) The national Parks dig is a bit inaccurate... many of the National Parks named after TR were opened AFTER his end of presidential term or his death. F) Also with the FDR and WW2; it can be double pun, with America always being referred to as the UK's younger cousin, so "Kiss my cousin's ass" could refer to FDR himself, being TR's cousin, OR the reference to America as a country being England's cousin. G) COMPLETELY UNRELATED TO THE BATTLE; the artist for Mt. Rushmore, Gutzon Borglum, wanted all of the presidents that are there to be carved to their upper chests like Washinton has, but he unfortunately was not able to for the inability to get enough funding to finish it. H) Dont know if you know it but the WAY TR showed his hand to Churchill, with two fingers and the back of the hand facing outward ("Give you the full deuce!"), is a physical sign of insult to Brits.

U didn’t explain the “Give my big stick a suckles” line. Some people might not get that reference to the carry a big stick thing. Same with a few other lines.

I would have thought the “thank God for pearl harbor” would be your most noted burn in the rap battle

Roosevelt was Assistant Secretary to the Navy, but the rough ridin' down to Cuba part was a reference the the Rough Riders, the 1st United States Volunteer Calvary of which Roosevelt commanded as a Colonel. He actually saw combat action in Cuba.

TR - resigned as SECNAV to serve in the Army to fight in the Spanish American War (the Rough Riders) and was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for that action to be the only POTUS to be a Medal Of Honor recipient. Churchill admitted that if the US would not enter the war Great Britain would have suffered a tremendous loss in World War II. Frankly, Churchill did thank his luck stars that Japan attacked the US. That committed the United States to fight. If it was for the US and the British fighting as a joint force World War II would have possibly ended differently or been prolonged. The Bull Moose Party still exists and still promotes TR's beliefs and agenda today.

when it said "keep calm and kiss my cousin's ass", did 'my cousin' refer to Teddy's cousin FDR (who was the president during WW2), or did it refer to the United States, which could have been seen as Britain's cousin?

I love the history lesson, 'teach. I love history.

They met just once at a dinner party hosted by TR at the New York Governor's Mansion in December 1900 shortly before he relocated to Washington DC to take up the Vice Presidency. There's no record of what happened at the dinner but WC continued to admire TR. TR, however, for years after would go out of his way to disparage WC especially after reading what he thought was WC's self-serving biography of his father Lord Randolph whom TR seemed to dislike as well. In 1911, TR wrote in a letter “I dislike Winston Churchill and would not meet him” at Edward VII's funeral and in 1914 he begrudgingly wrote to a British political friend “I have never liked Winston Churchill, but in view of what you tell me as to his admirable conduct and nerve in mobilizing the fleet, I do wish that if it comes in your way you would extend to him my congratulations on his action. It must be strictly confidential, of course."

This is just a guess, but the "Bully!" at the beginning of the rap was a reference to Churchhill's alcoholism. IIRC bully was a term used by sailors or drunkards when they got smashed drinking and can't get home safely. This info is mostly from the old shanty Bully in the Alley, where the lyrics were about sailors getting so drunk they just lied in the alleys until they were sober.

That one line is based of a Churchill quote. 'My dear you are ugly, but tomorrow I shall be sober and you will still be ugly'.

Teddy Roosevelt in my opinion is easily the textbook definition of what a American president should be Strong as hell, charismatic, a good leader, and doesn't give a fuck. He got shot and right after gave a over hour long speech because he knew as president he needed to speak with his people. He may not have done anything insane or incredible as a president but a lot of his time in office helped out the common working man and helped future presidents. He disassembled the Monopoly allowing small business to stand a chance and made standard regulations to make safer, he also took a bit of power from the senate and the congressman to give the president a more forward role rather than just a representative. They still did the same job it's just now the president had a direct say in law making.

The whole gallipoli campaign failure was due to government constantly cutting the forces Churchill had access to and he even warned government the consequences but they didn't listen and was forced to do the best with what he had, this is shown even better in the film Churchill that's why he feared D-day so badly and actually prayed it wouldn't happen because he didn't want a repeat of gallipoli, kind of wish more people knew the whole gallipoli situation better, always puts Churchill in a bad light when it was people above him that caused the failure.

One time in high school my world history teacher was talking about Mustafa Kemal and asked "what was his nickname?" Nobody answered, so he told us his nickname was Ataturk. A little while later (possibly on the same day) talking about Mussolini, the teacher asked "what was his nickname?" and I piped up "Ata-Italian." One of the biggest laughs I ever got.

I'm glad you mentioned the British empire. This one line about the size of Great Britain is supposed to be a pretty big zinger and many people do seem to think it is, but it's more of a misfire since it seems to forget about the empire. The fact that Churchil did not contest that in the video is a big missed opportunity.

Teddy is my favorite POTUS. Other presidents retire to go on speaking tours after they're president. Teddy went on safaris in Africa & South America.
