A lot of people (or so-called "Metallica fans") shit on this album being their "commercial turn over". Well, there are great songs on this album ! The Unforgiven is such a gem, no brainer here. Wherever I May Roam, The God That Failed, My Friend Of Misery, Of Wolf And Man are my other favorites from this album. Only seen 3 other Metallica reaction from you, and none have been " too hard" for you yet. I can't see which one. Ah well ! Good interpretation of the lyrics Sarah. I think it's about someone that from a young age he was controlled and even as an adult he tries to fit in, but never having his own autonomy and ends up being jaded and bitter due to life's circumstances. As a long term listener of Metallica, the Metallica songs that are more tame and also knowing you liked this song, other Metallica songs I know you'll like are: Welcome Home(Sanitarium), Orion(a great instrumental), Nothing Else Matters, Until it Sleeps, Hero of the Day, The Unforgiven 2. Hi Sarah. I knew this would be a perfect fit for you as it has enough melody to lighten the heavy but so much lyrical depth. A masterpiece, pure and simple. I love it. As for what it means ... in general you have the themes spot on and like all the best lyrics they have many interpretations. That said for James Hetfield he has revealed over the years that the Unforgiven is rooted very specifically in his childhood. James was raised by Christian Scientist parents. His Mother basically terrorised her son with religion (Enter Sandman's 'beasts under your bed' were incentive for fervent prayer or else the Sandman would come) and James' father was a violent and domineering pressence who frequently beat his son (The Day that never comes is a song that covers this - the protagonist surviving the childhood beatings dreaming of the day he is big enough to turn the tables and 'splatter colour on this grey'. Of course as with all child abusers, his father stopped beating him just as James started to look like he would win the fight.) In The Unforgiven James is literally dubbing his parents as The Unforgiven for the damage they did to him, damage he carried most of his adult life. The Unforgiven 2 similarly finds James older and through the protagonist relating how his trust issues and the bitterness inside leads him to dub everyone apart from him as Unforgiven. By the time The Unforgiven 3 comes round a much older James had famously had therapy and come to realise that in life we are all Unforgiven and it is only in recognising this and accepting this that we can find peace. Nobody's perfect and holding grudges is self defeating etc. Many of my personal favourite Metallica songs are from this very personal source. I find James' lyrics at their best with real emotion behind them - for example as a 21 year old James might have claimed Fade To Black was about his guitar getting stolen but anyone who has been to the dark place described in the lyrics knows that it is way too real to have so glib an inspiration. My theory, though unconfirmed, is that it is about his depression and trauma after his Mother died needlessly of Cancer. As I said before she was a Christian Scientist and when diagnosed chose to pray the stage 1 cancer away. It didn't work, obviously and after months of despair and horror it became stage 4 cancer and she died, leaving James not only devastated but seriously f**ked up. The song The God that Failed is a lyrical masterpiece absolutely ripping his mother and her faith to shreds as "the healing hand" was "held back by the deepened nail" and she chose to " follow the God that failed." James also brilliantly tackles his Mommy issues on the country tinged acoustic track 'Mama Said'. A song I also think you will love as a Taylor Swift fan. Musically The Unforgiven is wonderful. James' vocals have constantly improved over the years and he can really sing now. The arrangement, the solo - everything is perfect here and I am so happy that you loved this song Sarah! I am even more pleased that you rock out to Sad but True now too. We'll turn you into a Metal head yet! As for great songs - Metallica have plenty of them left to challenge your favourite placing umpteen times yet!! You basically can't go wrong. Unless you try to listen to Lulu.
